I love this artistic renditions of the classics that Marjolein Bastin creates, they're absolutely beautiful and each has their own color scheme I wouldn't recommend them first a first or casual read of these books are they are quite pricey, but they are beautiful editions to buy of your favorite classics as a collectible. I own a couple of these and they are lovely. Well put together with floral illustrations in the margins and with insert additions of things like artistically rendered family trees, invitations, and letters.
These editions are available as ebooks as well, but I recommend a physical copy to appreciate all the details and the loose page additions that are included throughout the book.
The tradition of illustrating Austen is not new, and while this is a fresh take on that tradition, I found this to be more a coffee table edition than one to add to discourse of Austen herself.
An equally beautifully made edition fitting for the story.
This range of editions is just stunning to read and perfect for any fan of the classics who are looking for some stunning and well made up editions, especially for many re-reads to come!
What a lovely thing Marjolein Bastin has done with Andrews McMeel Publishing in creating the
Marjolein Bastin Classics Series of illustrated classic novels. I love her artwork, so when I had the opportunity to review an ARC of her illustrated Sense and Sensibility, I couldn't very well resist. The story, of course is familiar, and it's a classic for a reason. But this print version - oh my! Bastin's sweet drawings of flowers, birds, butterflies, etc are just lovely in the margins of the pages, along with the full page artwork in places. My only regret is that the digital ARC doesn't include the ephemera that the print version has - maps, letters, family trees, sheet music, etc. I might have to treat myself to the hardcover version. I'd highly recommend for anyone who wants a keepsake version of Sense and Sensibility.
Many thanks to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for providing a digital copy for an unbiased review.
If you love to have beautiful editions of your classic favorites, then this Marjolein Bastin illustrated edition will be a perfect addition to your shelves. Add it to your holiday wishlist!
The beautiful artwork for Jane Austen's classic novel, Sense and Sensibility, drew me in. Marjolein Bastin's illustrations brighten up a rather boring book. I look forward to viewing more of Bastin's art.
Does it get any better than classic literature? I seem to have doubts about the approachability of classics, until I read them and become enthralled.
If Jane Austen isn’t on your radar, she should be. With timeless themes, memorable characters, and riveting prose, Sense and Sensibility is another example of good storytelling.
The stunning illustrations in this edition of Sense and Sensibility elevate this classic to a true bookshelf staple. The copy reminds me of my mother's collection of illuminated proverbs. I will likely be purchasing a copy of this for her for the holidays!
I'm a lover of Jane Austen and love reading her books time and again. And I have read this one in the past but I must say I really enjoyed the beautiful cover and the illustrations within the book are what really captured my attention this time round.
The story is timeless and one I will read and recommend time and again. I don't think I need to say much about the story/book as it has been around for a very long time but I must say that when books like this get republished with such wonderful, beautiful design and illustration it brings a new life to a wonderful story from the past.
This novel still fights it out with Pride & Prejudice as my favorite Austen, and after a decade (and many rereads), I still can't be forced to pick one.
Sense & Sensibility brings heaps of Austen's signature humor, satire and pure comedy. I feel like people often get caught in the romance aspect, but to me the genius of a JA will always lie in the observation of the human condition, the perfect snapshot of society at that time, from the point of view of young women.
This edition boasted of beautiful illustrations, every page turned a surprise of a pressed flower, leaf or branch, and made this old favorite feel new and yet undiscovered.
This book, of course, is a classic. The cover itself is beautiful and I would definitely pick this up in a shop based on the cover alone.
The illustrations within the book are just as beautiful, and I feel they really fit the tone of this well-loved novel. I especially enjoyed the designs for the first letter of each chapter, with their watercolour feel.
I am, however, giving this 4 stars because I was a little disappointed to not see any full sized illustrations of the plot. Although according to Goodreads, I think some illustrations are actually missing from the copy being circulated via NetGalley.
I'm a big Jane Austen fan and her works are just amazing. I love her writing and the way she tells her stories.
I started reading this one here, but since I got my physical copy I'll be reading it from my own copy. It's gonna take me some time, but I'm still enjoying it.
Confession Time
This is the first time I have ever read this classic.
I have to say I did not realise that Jane Austin set the bar for all romances that followed, especially with this, her debut novel.
This has everything, death, greed, scandal, love, heartbreak, dysfunctional families and we have a the original age gap relationship.
The illustrations of Marjorie Bastin in this edition are mostly botanicals and some animals and are charming, enhancing the pages of the book.
The illustrations were exquisite and delicate - I felt as if I was reading this book, sitting by one of those fabulous Regency gardens. The font calligraphy used for the print version looks real nice, and for a moment I felt as transported to the Regency era of carriages and entertaining visits at the piano forte. But even so, human relationships have changed a lot and not at all. We humans, though our codes of conducts might change, the way we control our feelings or let them control us has remained quite constant.
Bastin made a great job with her illustration through the pages, including different garden flowers blossoming as we turn each page, with also little birds and butterflies as guests. Such a subtle and soft way to frame each of the volumes and chapters which are part of this masterpiece. It matches her vision of loving the familiar and ordinary, finding the beauty in the world that lies before us every day, and with an increased awareness of the richness that nature possesses.
I truly recommend reading this book because of the author and the story - if you haven't read it - and if you have, the illustrations included in this edition create such a beautiful book, to be part of a collection of classic literature.

Crisp, elegant typography and beautiful, vivid illustrations of flowers, birds and butterflies grace the pages of this edition of Sense & Sensibility. It will delight the eye of Jane Austen fans and would make an appealing addition to any library!
A typical Jane Austen romance with a splash of feminism, Sense and Sensibility is for readers who enjoy the rest of Austen's books and are looking for a classic literature version of their historical romance reads. I spent an entire summer in high school reading all of Austen's books after becoming obsessed with Pride and Prejudice, and it has been nice to revisit them as an adult. These themes of Sense and Sensibility withstand the test of time. The main character, Marianne Dashwood, bucks tradition at every chance she gets and defies the social norms of her time.
Sense and Sensibility was always the third for me out of the Top 3 Austen books. But this edition might have just changed that. In the last few years many editions of Austen's books have been published, with a variety of covers, introductions, back chapters etc. This edition from Andrews McMeel Publishing cuts all that crap and adds these gorgeous, luscious botanical illustrations from Marjolein Bastin. The font is beautiful too. I am definitely going to get a copy of this for my bookshelf and ditch my older (and horribly typeset) copy.
Sense and Sensibility, first published in 1811, typically does not get the love that it deserves compared to more well-known Emma or Pride and Prejudice, but it is an excellent novel about love and family. The main story focuses on two sisters, 19-years-old Elinor Dashwood and 17-years-old Marianne Dashwood. Since this is my millionth re-read of the story, it was nice to know what to expect and I could focus on the illustrations that have been added.
The edition that I read for this review is the new illustrated classics edition from the Marjolein Bastin Classics Series. This version of the novel is perfect for any Jane Austen fan. The illustrations are gorgeous with a mix of woodland creatures and nature, feathers, flowers, and other botanicals in lovely watercolor. I believe the actual hardcover edition will also include maps, family trees, letters, and sheet music, which will be lovely to see as I did not see them in my e-version of the novel. Even if you are not a fan of this particular novel, it is perfect for a collection based on the illustrations and cover alone. With multiple other editions available, this one is a nice displayable version to give book lovers something a little different.
For the story, it was great to re-visit these characters and the vast amount of secrets that they keep. Edward, Lucy, Willoughby, and Colonel Brandon, just to name a few, all have their secrets that eventually get revealed over the course of the story. The standout of this story is the Dashwoods and the three sisters, Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret, where they are loyal and supportive no matter their circumstances. Since my main focus on this reading was to re-read a classic and view the lovely illustrations, I will not focus too much on the main story. The one thing that I will mention is that Elinor remains my favorite within the novel, but Edward still is only okay as her romantic match. Marianne was a nice balance to Elinor’s character and the rest of the characters were all enjoyable. Overall, this version of the novel is perfect for those who love Jane Austen and those that are reading it for the first time!
**I give a special thank you to Netgalley and the publisher, Andrew McMeel Publishing, for the opportunity to read this enjoyable novel. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.**
