New York City reporter Kaylie Karlyle has lost her job and is not sure what to do next. She is offered a freelance job writing about a family's Christmas traditions, but doesn't know who they are or where she is going. She gets on a private plane and is whisked off to the small country of Tolvania. There she meets Queen Isabella, her son Prince Alexander and granddaughter Princess Anna. Her arrival is a bit bumpy with the prince wanting her gone as soon as she arrives. It also turns out that this is not a news assignment, but a request to write a Christmas Fairytale for Anna, a gift from her grandmother. Kaylie wants to get back on the plane, but with a snowstorm raging, she is stuck. Queen Isabella convinces her to give it a try and Princess Anna and her dog Blixen quickly entrance Kaylie.
I really enjoyed this story. It is full of Christmas festivities and traditions from food to decorating to events and music. I loved the discussion about the making of snowglobes and why they are such an important part of the holidays. As Christmas magic unfurls, Kaylie is wrapped up in feelings and memories that begin to bury her "Bah Humbug" nature. Prince Alex begins to thaw where Kaylie is concerned, but they are both afraid to let their feelings show. This is such a wonderful Christmas story with family, festivities, romance and second chances. I love how Kaylie's family was also brought into this story and allowed us to see why Kaylie seems to be anti-Christmas. Queen Isabella is a wonderful character. She is formidable, loving, caring, and a wonderful mother/grandmother/monarch. She planned everything out and let it happen, only interfering when necessary. Anna and Blixen were wonderful. So much fun and troublesome as well. Alex is stoic and thinks he needs to be the gatekeeper for his family, but is not living. I was rooting for Kaylie to have a happily ever after and was not disappointed. A wonderful Christmas romance. There are a few recipes at the end and I definitely want to try making gingerbread pancakes for the family on Christmas morning.
I did NOT like this book. All the constant misunderstandings and arguments between the prince and Kaylie (who I disliked) got very old VERY fast. I was not a fan of their relationship and supposed "falling in love" - it seemed to happen very fast and seemed very shallow.
I also grew tired of all the "traditions." We do this because it's tradition! We do this too because it's tradition! We do this as well because guess what it's tradition!
To me the title is a bit misleading. I would have thought that the "fairytale" aspect would occur a lot more. Instead, we barely see Kaylie doing any actual work and just hanging out with the prince and the princess mooching off of them and getting a free holiday vacation (when she wasn't jumping to conclusions and/or biting the prince's head off).
My favorite characters were the dog and the queen (who I pictured in my mind as Julie Andrews as Clarisse Rinaldi, because of course).
I'm generally not a fan of Hallmark holiday movies, and maybe that's why I didn't like this book. If you DO like Hallmark Christmas films, then you'll probably like this story a lot more than I did.
Thanks to Netgalley for my e-arc... all opinions are my own.
This was a stunning Christmas Royal Romance, with a lovely set of characters and a heart-swooning romance. I couldn't have loved this fairy-tale more.
The true meaning of christmas, family.
A feel good, slow burn, family orientated Christmas fairytale.
If this book doesn't get you into the christmas spirit nothing will.
I loved the different traditions, the upside down christmas tree and the christmas crown were my favourites oh also the pancakes!
I enjoyed the story though it felt predictable.
Special thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for a free, electronic ARC of this novel received in exchange for an honest review
A Christmas fairytale from beginning to end!
This was a typical Karen Schaler book and did not disappoint. You could picture it all, just as though you were watching a Christmas film.
Kaylie swaps New York for the island of Tolvania, as she intends to work over Christmas. She does not realise though that she has been assigned to write a fairytale for the young Princess and will be staying in the Royal castle. The worst thing about it is that she isn’t a person for Christmas, but she is required to experience the Royal Christmas traditions.
As she takes part in each tradition a spell is cast, and Kaylie remembers Christmases past. As the spirit takes hold, so a romance begins to blossom.
Can there be a happily ever after for Kaylie?
A much needed Christmas read which definitely needs to be made into a film.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale, by Karen Schaler, is the story or Kaylie Karlyle’s December adventure in fictional Tolvania. When investigative reporter Kaylie Karlyle loses her job rather than the big promotion she expected, she is desperate for work. Her former boss, Bob, contacts her about a special holiday feature in Europe with few details. Kaylie agrees and boards the plane out of NYC with little information, including destination and assignment details.
When she lands in the small principality of Tolvania, Kaylie gets off on the wrong foot with Prince Alexander but immediately clicks with Queen Isabella and Princess Anna. Now in the middle of a storybook winter wonderland, Kaylie is determined to do her best for the Queen and the folks of Tolvania, not to mention the little motherless princess.
This is a lovely holiday story about a young writer commissioned to create a fairy tale using local traditions who actually discovers her own happily ever after. I very much enjoyed this beautifully written story! With well drawn characters, a picture perfect setting, and myriad Christmas traditions, this novel is sure to please those seeking a new genre in holiday stories. This book is so well done and I do recommend it!
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this book. I love any type of Christmas movie but this one especially. I mean who doesn't love a hallmark Christmas movie! This doesn't disappoint. Kaylie is hired to write a book for a Queen's granddaughter so she can know the family traditions. Kaylie had no idea what the job was and wasn't happy about it. Of course there is a curmudgeon prince who doesn't want to be involved! Much enjoyed!
When Kaylie accepts a job that involves writing a fairy tale for a child, she never imagined ending up in a castle at Christmas! While her usual jobs involve investigative reporting, Kaylie takes on an unusual writing assignment when her regular job ends unexpectedly. What started out as a feature about Christmas traditions turns into a real-life fairy tale, as the Royal Family of a small European country sweeps her into their lives. Will her Christmas wishes come true, or will Kaylie end up on a return flight to New York, weeping and heartbroken? Read this lovely Christmas Fairy Tale to find out!
I loved Kaylie's somewhat bumbling character, as well as the descriptions of the beautiful Christmas displays, traditions, and attire. If you are a Scrooge or Grinch, this story could just be the ticket to softening your heart and leading you to new Christmas traditions of your own. Who could resist a story that involves a delightful dog and a precocious child who happens to be a gifted artist, and by the way, a real princess?
Readers who enjoy a sweet story that is all about Christmas, family, and love will enjoy this novel by a renowned writer of Christmas fiction and films.
I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
If you like Hallmark Christmas movies, then this is a book you need to read. A journalist meets a real life prince who has sworn off journalists. Of course, sparks fly and they have a whirlwind romance that actually involves castles and a kind of fairy tale romance that is NEXT LEVEL. Add in Christmas and this is a heartwarming tale that would be great to read by the fire while you sip a warm drink. I really enjoyed it!
A lovely fairy tale romance, as good as a Hallmark movie. A feel-good romance that gives all the awesome feelings of love and Christmas time. This is my first read from this author and I look forward to reading more!
This book was a great holiday read. It was a fairy tale like book which was written about a reporter hired to write a fairy tale. The love story in this book is enchanting and the character of the Queen is probably my favourite character in the book as she is smart, strong and a little bit conniving. If you are looking for a Hallmark type holiday read then this is the book for you!!!
I love the Christmas Prince and was so excited to read this book. It did not disappoint at all, I hope this one also becomes a movie! I need more cozy fun holiday romances in my life. If you love the Netflix and Hallmark romance movies this book will hit the mark for you!
I absolutely loved this book! Slow burn romance but wasn't centered around the romance that was building. This book definitely dives into the true meaning of Christmas. Family, friends, forgiveness, love all of it. The princess was adorable right along with the dog Blixsen. The Prince and Kaylies banter was perfect and seeing all the different Christmas traditions was so much fun. Definitely recommend picking this book up!
I was able to read "A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale" by Karen Schaler on NetGalley. I loved this book! It was everything I wanted and needed for an easy Christmas time read. The holidays are so hectic, but while reading this I felt calm and I could imagine seeing all the wonderful sights and traditions in this book.
You can absolutely tell this was written by someone who writes Christmas movies. The plot was straight off the screen and even moments that happened you can tell were written for easy translation. It could have done with more editing as there were so many paragraphs that repeated the same thing 3 different ways.
Super predictable. Didn't keep my attention.
A Royal Christmas Fairy Tale by Karen Schaler is such a delightful read! The plot centers on Christmas traditions in families and countries, illustrating how one’s practiced traditions becomes a significant part of his memories. These memories help the characters appreciate the meaning of Christmas. The descriptions of the snowy countryside makes the reader feel he is there in Trovania. The reader has a pleasant surprise at the novel’s end, finding added material containing recipes and activities that are a part of the storyline.
I recommend this light-hearted story to help the reader remember his own Christmas traditions. Everyone will enjoy it tremendously!
Kaylie doesn't do Christmas, she is all about her career as an investigative reporter. However, when she loses her job and the only freelance work available is writing about Christmas, she takes the job. Totally surprised when she ends up in a fairytale castle discovering she needs to write a fairytale for a princess, with a royal family that will not allow any foreign reporters in the country.. So the family and Christmas work their magic on her, she works her charm on them and it is all happy ever after. Except when she accidentally breaks all the rules and seems to have destroyed evrrything....
Predictable story, however, I really wish Tolvania was real so I could go there for Christmas!
Karen Schaler is known for writing some pretty amazing Christmas books and this one hit the mark!
Small European country, snowy landscape, beautiful castle, a royal family, an adorable dog, Christmas traditions galore and a little bit of holiday romance...this story had it all! I'm a sucker for all things Christmas and with all of these details, I knew I needed to read it. I could easily see it turned into a movie for the Hallmark channel. Was it a little predictable? Sure. But yet it was a joy to read!
It followed a reporter who was suddenly out of job. Then she was offered a gig to get on a plane, go stay with a royal family and turn their many Christmas traditions into a fairy tale story for the young princess. The setting was very descriptive and made me want to take a holiday there! The writing flowed nicely and it was a great holiday read!
I was given this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this sweet Christmas story. This is the perfect book to get you in the mood for the holiday season. The characters are great! If you are looking to relax and melt into a winter wonderland, this is the book for you.
I loved this book! It is the perfect cheesy Christmas romance. I love that it has magic and love all wrapped together. Such a fun Christmas read
