This first in a new series is written very well and has some interesting characters. I liked Thea but I loved her cat sidhe Hero. They both are snarky, but Hero wins every time.
The world is unusual, but there was not much explanation of it in this book. Thea finds there are still dragons in her town, while history taught her they were extinct after a war. It is not a spoiler, as the title already gave this away. Overall the story felt a bit like a mystery, with Thea popping out and about questioning and looking for answers, but in a urban fantasy way. There is a (maybe) love interest, but that seems far off and to be honest, I felt no spark between Thea and Marcus and was not really impressed by him.
Overall a very nice read.
When Thea a bounty Hunter for the supernatural takes an assignment to go after a killer werewolf she finds she’s bitten off more then she can chew.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley. The opinions expressed in this review are completely my own
I really wanted to enjoy this book and the new series. Whilst I did like the new world of mythical / fantasy creatures there was a lack of world development and character depth. Not truly knowing what Thea, our main character, was and is capable of felt like there were some assumptions, instead of feeling like you may find out later in the book or series.
I could understand the secret of one dragon, maybe a few but it seemed as though there were a great many and yet Thea couldn't understand how just one had remained under the radar!! The plot seemed to be a little disjointed. I want to like this more than it deserves probably and would give the second in the series a chance just to see if there is any development .... in characters, the world and even the writing
The book started off great. I couldn't wait to understand more of the world that was being described. Unfortunately, I really could not stand the main character. For me, everytime she opened her mouth, I rolled my eyes. Maybe if I could have pushed through, the author would have explained why she was this way. I just couldn't make it that far.
While the story starts somewhat slowly it quickly gathers momentum, and some characters who are engaging. My favourite character was Hero (Herodotus) the main character Thea’s familiar; Hero appears as she pleases with both snark and sage advice.
The world building is good, although some aspects needed to be better explained earlier in the story; the unresolved tensions between Thea and her family included.
Overall, a good first novel in a new series which has two authors, a strong 3.5 stars.
With thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for my ARC.
It was the title that initially caught my attention. Dragon Heir (Thea Grove Vampire Hunter #1). Not only was it the word dragon that hooked me in but also that this was the first book in the series. I keep getting lured in by other books series only to find I’m not starting with book #1. Argh! This time I’m catching something from the beginning. And also…DRAGONS!
Survey says: I thoroughly enjoyed it! Tough, strong, I really liked Thea. She comes from a powerful family, but she’s left them behind to make her own world as a monster hunter. She takes on a case to hunt a rogue werewolf, but things are what they seem to be. AHA! I love a good twist. On that note, enter Marcus the alleged rogue wolf. Or is he? Hmmm.
This is a great beginning to a new series. I really enjoyed the world-building. The story was fast-paced, fun, and exciting. Which, when you combined that and a mystery to solve, made it for me very hard to put the book down. I enjoyed the connection between Thea and Marcus and discovering his secrets. Thea has her own secrets and there is quite a build-up as to why she has left her family dynasty behind. As much as I enjoyed the two of them, the real show stealer here was Hero! Hope to see more of him in future books. Can’t want for the next book!
Stars: 4
I received this book from Netgalley. I was not compensated for the book other than the entertainment it provided. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
After reading the synopsis of this book I was really excited to get started. Thea has separated from her family and is now working freelance for the police department. I don't fully understand the world but it is an Urban Fantasy and there are many different types of creatures - Thea being one of them. While I am always intrigued by unique species, I never fully grasped what they all are in this book (except vampires). Thea has wings and magic and her friend is a witch. There are so many species I cant keep up. I also understand that world building can take time instead of explaining the throughout the whole beginning but I don't know that I ever fully grasped the world or the Charter Council that governs.
Marcus and Thea were enjoyable to read about but I need more than a snarky MC to stay hooked. I just feel like these characters have been done before. However, the side characters were great! Hero, her sidekick, stole the show!
Overall, I'm sorry to say I didn't get too into this story. Love the idea and I feel like with better clarity for the readers the story is original has potential!
Thank you to NetGalley and Relay Publishing for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a solid paranormal fantasy, with just a touch of romance. Thea is a bounty hunter, with an interesting backstory. She comes from a powerful, if bloodthirsty family in the city of Hollowmore, where supernaturals rule the roost, and humans try to maintain some semblance of power. She turned her back on her heritage and instead helps out the human police when they have a problem, like vampires, that require a special touch. She gets hired to take out a rogue werewolf by seemingly innocuous human, and everything starts to go haywire from there. I easily read this one in a night, because I wanted to see how it all turned out. The characters captured my interest and I wanted to dig into this city of Hollowmore and how the various supernaturals co-exist (or fail to) and it successfully left me wanting more.
Thea is an interesting character, she is trying to survive on her own without her family. Currently she is a bounty hunter who does work for private sector and the police. You really don't know much about her background and get bits and pieces of it throughout the story but never the full picture. Marcus who your not sure if he is bad or good until over half way through the story has an interesting back story and you learn more about him than Thea.
Not my favorite science fiction story but I would read another one with Thea in it just to see how it developed and if it improved.
Original story with a lot of action that I wanted to love but couldn't. It was a fun read but I think I had more expectations of this book. In the synopsis they let it sounds like it's a very big secret Marcus holds and I thought I would be surprised but I wasn't.
You also don't get much of a character development, okay in the beginning they don't trust each other and at the end they do but that's all.
Okay then there is this person who they meet, who claims she is in debt by Thea. Euh can someone please help me!? Because I think I have never met her in the book, so why is she in debt?
I also got a feeling like I missed a whole book. I the synopsis the say she went freelance because she discovered that her father wasn't the man she thought he was, but it never really got explained.
Sometimes I was a little bit lost, there were a lot of new terms. Like what exactly is Thea? Also there wasn't much of world building, and I missed that especially in this new world. I would also have appreciated a little bit more background about all the clans or some more information. Now it was just a name and that was all. Like the kind Harlan is, who are they exactly? I don't know it never get explained.
I thought it would be a quick read, but this book read so slowly that I sometimes had to put it aside even if the tension was just building up.
I thought this book would have more tension, there were a lot of action scenes but it didn't get me seated on the edge of the chair😅 although it was a fun read.
This was a fun urban fantasy read! I really enjoyed the sass and banter, and the premise was really engaging. My only complaint was the world building was a bit lacking, there were things that were brought up that weren't thoroughly explained and left me with questions that went unanswered. Marcus was a bit unbelievable as a character, but maybe I've just been reading too many dark fantasy books. Either way, fun read for fans of urban fantasy/bounty hunter reads!
Dragon Heir, by co-authors Molly Webb & Ava Richardson, is the first installment in the Thea Grove Vampire Hunter series. Thea Grove is a monster hunter who is also a consultant for the Hollowmore Police Department. She's a PI who works under the handle Ash for Cash. She lives among Arcanskin, Demonskin, Clawskin, Mareskin, and vampires. She has access to magic when the sun is out, which allows her to use her wings. She has her trusty sidekick Herodotus aka Hero, who is a cat sidhe. Her best friend is a tech witch named Anika Singh who also helps make Thea's weapons.
Not too long ago, Thea decided to turn her back on her family when she learned they were deep into bad business, and not use the Grove name since doing so would put a target on her back. The only good Grove is her stepbrother who seems to have been brainwashed by the family and their trainers. When Thea takes a job finding a rogue werewolf named Marcus. Thea finds the guy, but also discovers that everything her client told her was a lie. He's not a werewolf, nor is he rogue. Now that Thea has found him, he’s in danger, so Thea feels obligated to keep him safe. What's worse is that Marcus seems to be a target from someone named the Arbiter.
The Arbiter, who remains a mystery, seems to be pulling the strings causing vampires to be more aggressive and attack in packs which they never do. What he wants with Marcus, and in return with Thea, isn't fully explained since most of the leads end up turning up empty. Thea also spends time working with the Hollowmore PD following the clues left by a gruesome assassin who is letting a track of mutilated victims. The question becomes whether or not the cases are connected or not.
I think one of the failures of this book is the lack of worldbuilding. Readers are told of a so called Charter Council which is starving the human infrastructure which leads to Thea picking up the slack where the local PD can't. Readers never meet those in charge. We are also told that several hundred years ago, there was a coup against the Dragon's families which ended up with the dragons being driven into the darkness. When Thea hitches up with Marcus, she learns things that will make her even more angrier at her family, and the woman who trained her.
Although I have some negatives, I will be willing to read the sequel even if it's just to find out who the Arbiter is. Thank to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me a copy of this e-Galley. The review is based on my thoughts, and notes. I was not offered money for my review.
I struggled to really get into reading and enjoying this book. While the writing and premise were good, the long sentences and paragraphs made it a very slow read. I often found myself having to re-read sections.
I felt like the reader was constantly out of the loop. With every new element introduced, I was supposed to already know about it or have some understanding of it. Was this truely the first book in the series? Are we missing some back information from a prequel? What kind of "monster" is Thea? Besides the name, her wings, and that she glows from the daylight - I really didn't understand what she was. Why did she really leave her family? What world does this take place in? Also, there are a lot of names thrown at the reader: character names, town/area names, classifications of creatures, etc. It was hard to keep track of everything and focus on the story.
I didn't connect with Marcus all that well. He just automatically trusts Thea with a life altering secret. This didn't make sense to me. While I did like the synopsis of the book and the banter between Thea and Hero made me laugh out loud, I couldn't finish this book. I may try to give it another go and see how it ends. But I most likely will not continue the series.
I received an eARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
This book had me hooked from beginning to end! The pacing was quick, which I loved. I enjoyed the magical world of shifters and the tension between the different shifter clans. I wish there was a glossary of all the shifter clans though - it would have helped me keep them straight and understand exactly which type of creatures they were. I was definitely engrossed in the story of the main character and really loved her being a strong, independent female who left her own clan to do things her own way when she didn't agree with how violent they were. I loved the connections between the main characters, but wish there was more romance. I can tell that the next books in the series will probably lead to that though. Overall, great world building with magical shifter abilities and good character growth! I will definitely continue this series to see what happens next!
This novel was an enjoyable read for the start of a new series. Thea, the main character, comes from a powerful family, but has left that life after discovering a side of the family she did not know about. She discovers more about those in her former life that she did not know about through the course of the novel. Thea hunts "monsters", like a bounty hunter, and works with the human police. A new assignment from an unusual client makes Thea meet Marcus, her target and supposed werewolf. But Marcus, a pub owner, is no ordinary werewolf and Thea uses her skills to discover the truth about who put a hit out on him. But this leads to more questions than answers, and involving those Thea cares about. Thea will have to work together with Marcus to solve this case, before dangerous secrets emerge.
I received this novel from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is the first book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed it enough that I checked to see if she had any other novels. I'm not sure that I will read any of them, for the most part they seem young adultish (a genre that truly irritates me), but I definitely looked her up.
The book started a little slowly, but once it picked up speed, it barreled along nicely, dragging me with it. I wouldn't say that it was riveting, as I didn't feel the need to stay up late to finish it, but it was definitely a very entertaining read that kept me engaged throughout.
The plot, while not exactly original, was fresh enough that I didn't feel like I had already read it a dozen times before. While it was obvious that this is the first book in a series with an overarching mystery that will need to be addressed eventually, the puzzle that drove the plot of this particular chapter was solved and the story tied up neatly by the end with no annoying cliffhangers.
The book itself was well written, and in the world inundated with self published kindle unlimited books that have seemingly never seen an editor, a well written, well edited book is something of a rarity.
So why only 4 stars? Two reasons:
1. Marcus. The guy was kind of vanilla. a beta to Thea's alpha. I get the feeling he's being set up as a future love interest for Thea but I just don't see it. There was no spark, no chemistry, no real tension between the two as far as I could tell. Given that the guy is over 100 years old and considered a leader of sorts amongst his people, I would expect to see more alpha traits and less naivete.
2. This simply was not a 5 star book to me. It is not a story that will stick with me and resurface from time to time as I try to figure out what comes next. I'm not waiting anxiously for the next chapter in Thea and Marcus' story. If I come across the next book in the series I will probably read it, but it will not be added to my "must read" list. This book was for me a fun way to pass a few hours with no real angst and no deep thinking.
Through NetGalley, I received a free copy of DRAGON HEIR (Book 1 of the Thea Grove Vampire Hunter urban fantasy series), by Molly Webb, in exchange for an honest review. Thea Grove is a shifter, which means she can change shapes. She does this by sprouting wings when needed. Thea Grove is also the rebellious scion of THOSE GROVES. When Thea found out her family was more mobster than high society, she left, moved to the poor side of town, and opened a detective/monster slayer agency. Thea can be found finding missing people and fulfilling slay certificates for law enforcement. When Thea takes a job finding a rogue werewolf, she also refuses to take the accompanying job of killing the man; she’s no assassin. Thea finds the guy, but also discovers that everything her client told her was a lie. Now that Thea has found him, he’s in danger, so Thea feels obligated to keep him safe. Thea’s quest to find out why the man is in danger will uncover secrets Thea may not be ready to know. Meanwhile, paranormal politics seem about to implode.

A new beginning with lots of promise. Characters are fun and snarky at times. Story has lots of mystery with is action packed. I would love to see more of this one. Thanks #netgalley and #RelayPublishing for the eARC in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
A good beginning to a new urban fantasy series. Thea is our protagonist and she's a member of a high class winged species that decimated the Dragon population. The Thea we meet though is estranged from her family from choice and working as a bounty hunter hunting Vampires and whatever else causes chaos. Strange things are happening with gross atrocities and murders . A new client fearing for his life asks Thea to kill the man who is terrorising him but when she tracks him down things are clearly not what she expected !
Ok Thea isn't a murderer but she is someone with very deadly skills. I liked her in spite of the fact that the necessary information about why she avoids her family wasn't really apparent until the end and by then it felt anticlimactic. She's afraid to make friends and yet is close to a Witch and seems to have a familiar who manages to steal every scene that they appear in ! I think sadly that the title gives quite a lot away which is a shame to my mind. Yet this story was interesting and certainly leaves openings for more in this series and I look forward very much to finding out where these characters go next.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
The cover of this book gives to understand that this is a collaboration between a more experienced author and a newcomer. The result is more of a debut novel with none of the experience showing. The writing is good, but the long paragraphs make it slow to read. The formatting of the NetGalley copy with its paragraph blocks didn’t help, as I found my mind wandering at every gap between the paragraphs.
The book is built the wrong way up. The author has probably learned that info-dumps are bad, but there was nothing to guide the reader. When the world is as unique and complicated as it is here, it meant the reader was constantly lost, wondering if they’re reading a second or third book in the series. What sort of creature was Thea? Why were there all these ‘skins’ in the first place? Is this town unique or is the whole world the same? Every character was brought in like the reader should be familiar with them already, adding to the annoyance.
The character motivations were incomprehensible and revealed too late. Why has Thea left her family? For most part, I thought it was because she didn’t like and respect their line of work, though that was purely conjecture until about the third way through the book. It wasn’t until the very end that the true reason was revealed, completely out of the blue. It failed to make an impact there. By then I’d formed my opinion of her, and it wasn’t entirely favourable. And Marcus was all too trusting for someone with a huge secret to keep, not just for him but for his people. I didn’t click with him as a romantic hero.
Because the world and the motivations didn’t make sense, the plot failed to make an impact. It had a lot of action and fight scenes, and the good guys won in the end. This was probably an opening of a series, but I don’t think I’ll be reading more.
