What a beautiful love story this was, and not just romantic love, but also a tale of friendship and found family.
I adored Cleo and Macks relationship from the moment they met, and oh it was heartbreaking at times! This book forced real tears from my eyeballs in one particular part. Gorgeously written and so emotional.
Maybe slightly longer than it needed to be, but overall a lovely story I will be recommending
I absolutely loved this book. I can't wait til it comes out in paper back. It is definitely one for my shelf. Josie silver is a great writer and keeps you captivated right til the end. The characters are so normal and every day people which makes it all seem so believable and relatable. I fell in love with the island. I want to go there. I hope everyone gets to enjoy this as much as I did
One Night on the lsland by Josie Silver
I give this book 4 stars
One cottage. Two strangers.
Cleo writes about love stories every day. She just isn't living one of her own.
But what if one night on the island is just the beginning?
A heartwarming journey of self discovery and maybe a touch of romance along the way.Beautifully crafted by the author, this charming story really comes alive. We’re swept away to the remote Salvation Island (l wanted to go there) and introduced to Cleo and Mack along with a few other special characters that for me helped make the story what it was. Thoroughly enjoyable,l was left feeling warm and totally satisfied inside!
With thanks to Netgalley,Josie Silver and Penguin General UK for my chance to read and review this book
I just love it. It is perfection to me.
It make me cry and laugh. So full of life. I found my book of the year. How could it be better!?!
I breath with the main characters. They were so special, not ideal but almost. They took her chances and made the best they could. An enemy to lover story, couse they find themselves on an island in the same house together and both wants the other to leave. But obviously life is complicated and they are there together where they both need to be alone. The way all come apart and together again is wonderful.
Their support, devotion, atraction was so tender an chilled up in the right way. There were so many details that made me fall in love with this book but I try to give my three reasons. Beside I love Flamingos.
My three things:
1.Beeing by the sea is special
2.Found something and somebody you like is extraordinary
3.Never regret neither 1. or 2.
Thank you Netgalley and Penguin publishers for this book. It was a dream come true to me.
Lively, enjoyable romance with some nice twists set on an island. What’s not to like? Wasn’t as taken with it as with One day in December but an enjoyable read nonetheless.
another great escapism from Josie Silver. I was super excited to have the opportunity to read this ahead of the publication - thanks Netgalley and the editor!
I have been looking for one of those heart-warming, page-turning love stories that was not too predictable and I have to say this one did not disappoint. It lost one star just in comparison with One Day in December, whose story is slightly more compelling, but overall I do recommend this book
One Night on the Island by Josie Silver. Another NetGalley book. Cleo is turning thirty which is making her look at her life, what’s she’s achieved and what she hasn’t. Through her work she gets the opportunity to stay on a small island but she under estimates the power of this island in very respect. Mack is at a completely different stage in his life to Cleo, having separated from his wife, who he is still very much in love with. The stories split between Cleo and Mack and how they find the new them, a journey for both of them of self discovery. Another new author for me. I actually ended up really liking this book, it’s a grower and you’ve got to keep with it until the end but it’s really good. It really hard to put a finger on what made this book turn around for me, I think in many ways it’s remarkably relatable, I reached those ages such as 30 and 40 and it’s made me look back on what’s gone on in the past and for me in many respects my life changed when I hit 30. Every character is loveable and likeable, including Mack and Cleo, not on does this little island community grow on Cleo and Mack but it grew on me as a reader. Kind of reminding me of our trips on holiday to Cornwall before the magic of the place took over and we moved here. Don’t get me wrong it’s predictable however at the same time it keeps you guessing and even though you know what the ending will be, it still has that little twist. I loved Cleo’s character she’s stubborn, independent, yet is vulnerable and at times lonely, she’s brave and wears her emotions on her sleeve and she’s a bit of a dreamer but stubborn enough to make those dreams come true. Cleo is loyal, honest and loves with all her being and she’s not scared to take a risk. Mack is just a big apart of this story however I felt like I kind of knew Cleo. Mack is equally as stubborn, set in his ways. Again he is loyal, he’s a great father and when he makes a promise, he makes it for life or finds it hard to break and in many respects Mack is old fashioned and has old fashioned values which make home endearing and loveable. One of the main characters is the Island itself, Salvation Island, an island that feels like it has a beating heart, just as much an essential part of the story as the characters. As a reader you feel all these things for the characters and the island because of the authors great ability/talent at telling a story. Will definitely being reading more in the future by this author. Will also definitely be recommending to family and friends 🎄
The story seemed all too predictable but was nevertheless and entertaining read. There were sufficient twists to hold the attention and the conclusion was surprisingly satisfying.
A funny and emotional book loved it.
Cleo and Mac have overbooked a small one bedroom cottage on a small island off Ireland.
Cleo is from London working as a dating columnist and about to turn 30 and wants a change in life.
Mac is from Boston separated from his wife and two sons for the past year and wanted to return to his roots and photograph everything.
Cleo and Mac don`t hit it off and lay ground rules for living together until the boat returns and hopefully one of them decides to leave the cottage.
A great easy read very emotional, just loved the atmosphere of the island so colourful and all the people who lived there and took Cleo and Mac into their hearts.
Well worth a read.
Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review
Thank you @NetGalley and @PenguinUKBooks @VikingBooksUK for a digital reviewer copy of this much anticipated latest offering by Josie Silver in exchange for an honest review. I fell in love with One Day in December by the same author and could not contain my excitement when I received my copy of this novel; unfortunately it wasn’t my cup of tea.
Publication Date: 15/2/2022
Rating: 3/5
Genre: Contemporary Romance, Women’s Fiction
Tropes: Slow Burn, Forced Proximity, Sad Romance, Holiday Romance
Cleo travels to a remote location in Ireland on the brink of her 30th birthday on a journey of self-discovery/self-marriage/self-coupling, as part of her job as a columnist for a digital magazine. On her arrival, she locks horns immediately with an American visitor, Mack, who claims to be staying in the one room bedroom cabin that she has pre-paid and booked. Mack has his own reasons for travelling to the island, troubles in his married life but also to find out more about his heritage after all the wonderful stories his grandmother has told him during his childhood. With intentions that are resolute and with it being an isolated island with access only by a weekly ferry boat, neither Cleo nor Mack wants to give up on their stay and end up forced to share the space together.
What I enjoyed most is the female friendships and sense of tight-nit community that Silver presented with enthusiasm. Silver’s prose is always incredible, here it convinced me to keep reading this book. The supporting characters were my favourites and added the wit and humour to the story. I found myself chuckling away at their interactions with the central characters. With the beautiful description of the locales and coast, a small town romance, this book also takes credit for escapism and you really lose yourself within the pages.
Without trying to give away spoilers, I struggled with the moral and ethical themes in the book. They are nowhere near perfect but where Cleo’s reasons for travelling were to rediscover herself, there was a definite emphasis on Mack’s presence and her focus on him from the start which was disappointing. Where he wasn’t around is where Cleo’s focus shifted back to herself which felt imposed and hypocritical. I was not taken by the idea of this romance, it felt rushed and the development could have been better; more moments and meaningful conversation could have helped. Mack’s relationship both as a husband and father felt conflicted and complicated and although I applaud Silver’s effort to raise this theme, I could not relate to the character’s emotions, still being married/in love with his wife but quickly involving himself with another woman? Cleo may have encouraged and pursued first but again as consenting adults, Mack definitely exercised a choice and given the daily angst and dilemmas he felt he was going through, I don’t agree that he made the right one. As a dating blogger, Cleo should have seen the red flags of getting involved with a married man with children. Of course, everyone has the choice to move on but I don’t think Cleo or Mack were ever honest about what they were getting themselves into.
As this is my second book of Silver’s, I do enjoy her writing and I was still invested enough to make it to the end. It does have potential and for a bit of romance and an escape, I hope you enjoy the read!
I have read and enjoyed One Day in December and The Two Lives of Lydia Bird so had high expectations for this book. I didn’t enjoy this as much as I was expecting too but it was easy to read and pleasant. I liked the setting of salvation island.
This is probably a book for 30 somethings due to a few of ideas in it. Having said that I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Really liked both of the main characters Mack & Cleo. The island natives were also very well drawn.
I read and previously enjoyed One Day in December by Josie Silver. I also have The Two Lives of Lydia Bird sitting on my shelf to read so when I saw this on NetGalley I couldn’t resist requesting. I’d like to thank NetGalley and Penguin UK for approving me for an ARC of this book.
I honestly don’t know where to being with this one. I absolutely loved everything about this story. From the moment Cleo and Mack met we all knew where it was heading but the journey there was an epic micro love affair!
The setting of Salvation Island was stunning so much so that I think lodges on a remote island are my ideal holiday destination. Aside from the beautiful scenery you also had the welcoming and friendly island community. The knitting group were a special collection of women and their gift to Cleo melted my heart!
As for Cleo and Mack, they were a match made in heaven. I loved the bickering and the stroppiness from both of them. It only added to the sexual tension that was resonating on the pages. I liked the routine they found themselves in and how they shared things about their life and achievements. Whilst Mack was an absolute hunk the stand out character for me was Cleo.
Cleo was on a journey of self discovery and what a fantastic journey she had. I could completely understand the ceremony she went through and her reasons behind it. I loved her ability to call Mack out and not be afraid to say what she wanted. She was headstrong and determined to succeed but also allowed herself to be vulnerable, which isn’t easy.
To take a leaf from the book I just have three things left to say(if you’ve read the book then you’ll understand the significance)…
1.This book made me laugh out loud on several occasions. I’m still laughing about the different animals Cleo thought of for her column title.
2.I also found myself chocked up on more than one occasion so you need the tissues ready.
3.Josie Silver I do not regret finding and reading this book at all. Can not wait for the next one!
I picked this one up as part of @netgalleynovember when @booksandbeautifulthings18 suggested a #buddyread
I requested this one after reading and enjoying one day in December last year. I loved the setting of Salvation island it sounded like the place for a real reset from life. I liked Cleo and Mack and loved how their relationship unfolded. It had the perfect mix of humour and emotion for me. I think it was lovely how it didn’t just focus on falling in love but it was a real journey of self discovery. The only reason I didn’t give this book 5 stars was because the whole idea of marrying yourself just didn’t work for me. Although I do understand what the book was trying to do. I really do recommend picking this one up as soon as it’s released in February. Thank you @netgalley and @penguinukbooks for the advanced copy.
This is a love story where you find yourself falling in love...with the characters. One island, one cottage, two strangers! This story will test your emotions, but it's definitely worth reading.
I loved this book, it was a perfect escape from real life for me.
Cleo and Mack are our ideal main characters and I challenge anyone not to want to visit Salvation, it sounded like a dream of an island.
A perfectly written novel with romantic, heartfelt moments all through it - I would highly recommend it.
This is the first book of Josie Silvers that I have read and it was very enjoyable.
I loved the setting of Salvation Island and the sound of the cabin. Even with a chalk line down the middle of it! The meeting of Cleo and Mack (big Mack!) certainly set us up for an entertaining read. I loved how they reacted to each other and how their relationship developed. No spoilers a great bit of romantic escapism.
Cleo, who writes a dating advice column, is sent to a small island of the coast of Ireland to write an article on "marrying herself". She is meant to stay by herself in a small lodge, however due to a mixup she ends up sharing with Mack, an American photographer who in turn is escaping from a failing marriage.
I found a lot of similarities between myself and the main characters. For Cleo, I like solitude, but need company at times, with Mack I went through a marriage breakup and all that entails. The island of Solitude sounds an amazing place, with an amazing community, but it does tend to rain a bit but I could certainly spend some time there but would take a warm waterproof coat. I found it difficult to rate this book, it is a slow burner and I found myself dipping in and out of it, but to sum it up I ended up finishing it at 4:30 in the morning.
I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley, however this did not influence my review of the book.
This novel is set in a very small island called 'Salvation' set just off the coast of Ireland.
Cleo on the verge of becoming 30, and is a dating columnist from London and is sent on a self- coupling sabbatical by her 'Women Today' editor on the honeymoon package.
But really her dream job is to become a novelists, she says this is 'so clichè'.
However as soon as she arrives at her cabin trouble begins, as it appears to have been doubled booked somehow.
We meet Mack who's cousins holiday let it is and the land lady let it out to Cleo. They instantly clash and have to draw a line in the sand quite literally to live side by side in this one bedroom cabin.
Mack 35, is a photographer who has two boys under 10 and he's not sure where his life is heading so he come to his cousin's holiday let to give him some space and tranquility to think, similar to what Cleo needs.
I love how is cheaper shows a diferant POV it moves the story a long at a nice speed.
I liked this novel a lot from the big two characters to their families and especially the very small community of the island! There is so much room for a second novel!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for giving me a digital copy of this book in exchange for a honest review.
Wow this was emotional- it was funny, it was joyous and it was heartbreaking yet heartwarming!
I loved our main characters and their setting and really enjoyed the friendships formed on the island and all the characters. I’m not sure I can find fault with this book… maybe the way it ends but I also don’t think it could end any other way, I just want to see everything tied up in a happily ever after bow! This book wouldn’t be as good as it is if that had happened though!
I’m glad the character mostly was falling in love with herself and being true to who she was whilst finding someone to love and not giving herself or her dreams up in pursuit of that. This isn’t just a love story it’s a self love story
