As usual in my reviews I will not rehash the plot...

Having read two other books by Josie Silver, I was really looking forward to this one. To my dismay, I did not enjoy it as much as previous titles - largely I think because I didn't like either of the main characters...

I found Cleo extremely annoying - the whole premise of her reasons for going to the island made me feel that I am either from another planet or too old to appreciate how young women of today think when approaching the tender age of 30! Mack was also somewhat annoying, but in a different way. Taken together they were a whole new level of irritating!

That said, I persevered with the novel, and found some sections to enjoy - the fellowship of the islanders and their various backstories were interesting, and the final section of the book redeemed things.

Maybe I was just in a bad mood whilst reading this, as everyone else seems to have loved this book?

Anyway, I would happily read more novels by this author, and categorise this as a 3-star read for me.

I do love a Josie Silver book. and I read this in just a couple of sittings.

Cleo is a journalist and a budding author. Her column on an online woman's magazine is all about modern dating. With Cleo''s 30th birthday looming and still single, her editor comes up with the idea of sending Cleo off to a remote island off the coast of Ireland to marry herself in a symbolic ceremony.
With no choice, Cleo arrives on a sparsely inhabited island to find that Otter Lodge, her home for the next few weeks has actually been double booked.

Not only that but the other resident of the lodge is Mack. A grumpy American who has come to the island to learn more of where his Grandmother came from.

A storm is on the horizon and the boat which ferries people and supplies to and from the mainland only comes once a week. There is only one bed in the lodge, nowhere else to go on the island and both Cleo and Mack are stubbornly demanding that theiyare the rightful resident of Otter Lodge.

There is a fantastic cast of supporting characters who are the few other islanders who welcome Cleo and Mack into their lives and their hearts.

The story is told from the perspectives of both Cleo and Mack and is fairly fast moving.
A truly lovely story that is as much about coming to love ourselves as well as looking to find "The One"

This book is going to be HUGE.

I love a love story and Josie Silver is just one of the best authors of them!! Her characters are full and rich with complications that are both real and relatable. I would recommend this book to anyone :)

What a great set up to a romantic and uplifting story with some sizzling sex!
You know exactly what to expect from a couple on a remote island trying to share the same cabin after a double booking. Initially annoyed that the other has ruined their solitude, the angst begins to thaw and something develops between them.
I really enjoyed this romantic story and think the author tackled a well trodden path and expanded it in a convincing way. I loved the three things they told each other every night that continued throughout the book. The idea that Cleo was their to discover herself was far more satisfying than having the American save her.
I loved both Cleo and Mack as characters and their extended families and lives bought a well rounded picture.
My only reservation would be that I found the book a little long in the second part. There is, however, a perfect ending and I was left feeling uplifted!

This is the story of Cleo, a journalist who writes a dating column for a magazine. Her editor talked her into staying at a remote island, the idea being that after a few months living on her own she would then marry herself. Cleo, although not 100% sure this is a good idea, packs her bags and heads off to Otter Lodge, which unbeknown to her has been double booked!

I found Cleo utterly charming. Her beauty and kindness shone through the pages. Josie Silver’s narrative of how our heroine starts to believe in herself is very thought provoking. The villagers themselves lend a lot to this story and I wanted to join in with the knitting circle.

This is a love story with a difference and all the more enjoyable because of that.

Oh my gosh. I adore this author and she's done it again. Such fantastic books that get hold of me and I can't put down.

What can I say about this book?! I have read One Day in December and loved it so I had high expectations of this book but it surpassed them. This book is about Cleo, a women’s magazine dating columnist about to turn 30 and feeling a little lost with life. She is given an assignment to go to a remote Irish Ireland for her 30th birthday and commence in a ‘self-coupling’ ritual, to essentially marry herself. She goes to find herself and finds this and so much more, including a new family and a micro love affair. I loved the characters, and I wanted them to have a fairy-tale happy ending, but that’s not necessarily life! Would highly recommend.

I have not read any books by this author before but I now look forward to read more of her books. The hauntingly beautiful descriptions of well named Salvation Island will stay with me for some time. The coming together of two people at a crossroads in their lives is handled with great insight and leads to a sensitive conclusion. The supplementary characters are well drawn and interesting and could be the reason to make further visits to the island. Overall, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book.

A second novel is a tricky one to release, especially when the first is a phenomenon. One Day in December was a brilliant story and one that has stayed with me over time. It’s a book I’ve recommended to countless people. A book to follow this was always going to be tricky…but Josie Silver has done it.

The cover of One Night on the Island is similar to One Day in December, so jumped out and grabbed my attention.

The story focuses on two characters, Cleo and Mack. Both find themselves accidentally sharing a lodge on a small island in Ireland. It’s an enemies to lovers story, which pulls at your heartstrings and leaves you desperate for the two to make it.

Each character has their own backstory, but I felt Mack’s was the stronger, more pulling story. Supporting characters were brilliant, each unique enough to have their own personality traits, but not too strong to detract from the main characters.

The story was well paced and flowed incredibly well. Descriptions were perfect and left me feeling like I was there on Salvation Island with them.

The author has produced another stunning novel. I’m gutted I’ve finished it!

Sadly, due to other things in my life, it took me over a fortnight to complete this book which meant that I didn't get fully absorbed in it. However, towards the end I completed it without a break and thoroughly enjoyed it. The tale of two people, both at a crossroads in their life who are thrown together on a femote Irish island. Gradually they come to support amd help each other to get their lives back on traxk. It is a lovely book and some day soon I will read it again with no interruptions.

This book was just brilliant! Josies books are all amazing. This book was pure escapism! Who wouldn’t want to go and stay in a cabin on their own for a while? The characters were well written and I could just imagine the setting. A fabulous love story about relationships and finding yourself

This is the third Josie Silver book I have read and her writing just draws you in making it difficult to put the book down. I loved the characters, Mack and Cleo with all their idiosyncrasies. We really get to know Cleo as she is looking for a different type of life away from London. She settles into her new life on Salvation Island with ease and she loves the community feel of the island. Mack, from Boston, is also on the island escaping briefly from his marriage which is falling apart. Because of a mix up they end up sharing the same cottage begrudgingly but pretty soon find themselves falling for each other. We get to know many of the characters on the island who welcome these two without reservation and the island feels like life would have been fifty years ago. Overall, I love Josie Silver’s writing and this would have been 5 stars but for the wedding scene where Cleo marries herself which I just thought was a bit silly. Other than that, it was a cracking read and thoroughly recommended. Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me an arc of this excellent book.

I am a romantic at heart and I knew from the synopsis alone that One Night of the Island was a book I would love and I was not disappointed.

Within just a few sittings I devoured One Night on the Island; as I was completely hooked.

I really identified with Cleo – she is an online journalist about to hit the big 30 and feels such a weight on her shoulders about doing something really significant to mark this birthday.

I’m a former journalist (now working in PR and communications) and I felt really similar about turning 30 although I did not do anything as outlandish as Cleo does!

Cleo’s editor has a bright idea to send her to a remote island, to marry herself, in a symbolic ceremony, as she turns 30 – still single.


Not 100% convinced she makes her maiden voyage to Salvation Island and after a rather bumpy passage she arrives, literally in the middle of nowhere, to find her cosy cottage double-booked.

And to her absolute horror the disgruntled, sticking his oar in American, Mack is her new roommate.

Photographer Mack has travelled from America to Salvation Island to find out more about his heritage, document the stories his grandmother told him and get some much-needed space and time to think – or so he thought!

What follows is a laugh out loud funny, but wholly poignant tale of how they end up forced to live with each other in Otter Lodge, and the quirky routines that they develop, including the three things they share with one another, the rules displayed in the kitchen and the infamous chalk line.

A colourful cast of characters support Cleo and Mack, as they navigate life in this unknown place which soon becomes incredibly meaningful to them both.

Salvation Island has a really close-knit community who embrace Cleo and Mack with open arms and add even more charm to the story.

I really felt like I was there with them both, clambering over “the mountain” to get some phone signal, joining in with the knitting, enjoying a pint of Guinness at the pub and taking in the incredible views the island has to offer; thanks to Silver’s brilliant writing.

The heartbreak that Cleo feels really hit me and the turmoil that Mack goes through just really pulls on your heartstrings. 

Salvation Island really does become Cleo's salvation. 

I’m a big fan of films like The Holiday and books by Nicholas Sparks and if you are too, then One Night on the Island is a must-read.

This was the first book I have read by author Josie Silver but I doubt it will be my last, I really love her writing style and have heard such positive things about One Night in December.

Oh my heart! I absolutely LOVED this story.

Having previously demolished Josie's other books I was so looking forward to this one and boy, it did not disappoint!

There was a fantastic cast of characters, vividly brought to life by wonderful descriptions and I could easily picture them all in my mind's eye. The setting itself, a remote island off the coast of Ireland was beautifully depicted and although quite a bleak location, the warmth and welcome extended by the residents made it feel like a wonderful place to be.

I could really feel the bleakness and desolation of Salvation Island, the warmth and hospitality of the locals and the magnetic attraction between Mack and Cleo.

This book actually made me cry in a couple of places and I was on tenterhooks toward the end, desperate to know what was going to happen.

Just a tiny criticism ... the title is rather misleading ... it is so much more than "one night" on the island. An odd choice??

Lots of different topics were covered within the pages of this novel ... loss of a parent at a young age, family dynamics, strong independent women, as well as the overwhelming feeling of being completely blindsided by the all-consuming, unexpected love for another human being.

I will be recommending this book to everyone I know and can't wait for Josie's next book!

First of all I’m so grateful to have had the chance to read this book. I love rom/coms and this was the perfect example. It did take me a little while to get into the book and to connect with the characters, Cleo and Mack, as they aren’t perfect, but then no one is!

Overall I liked this book and felt as though I was transported to the island each time I opened the book- the writing style is beautiful.

I was sad when the book ended and can’t wait to read more of Jodie Silver’s work.

Pure perfection! I was transported to the island and I loved every second reading this book.

This is a story of changes, of self discovery and leaving behind the old life and bravely stepping into a new, uncertain future. Cleo and Mack both have their own baggage (no spoiler alert) but its how they adjust to the future and discover more and more about each other.

Alongside this growing relationship are the residents of the island and I felt as if I had been made an temporary member of the group of islanders, so beautifully written were the descriptions of every aspect of island life.

Great story, great characters and I was sad it had ended. That’s my definition of a book to be recommended!

I adore Josie Silver stories and was very pleased to receive this advanced copy. It did take me a while to get into the story about Cleo & Mack. However was into their story eventually, a sweet ending and for me the characters I wanted to know more about was the islanders main stays, Raff & the lovey women from the knitting group.

I loved this book! The lead characters aren't perfect but you feel them trying to be the best person they can be and you like knowing them for it. It's about them learning to find themselves and not just being who they think they need to be and falling in love with themselves as well as each other. A lesson that many of us could learn from.

The community on the Island feels so special you wish you could find your own Salvation and never leave. Every character on the Island and their interactions with Cleo especially the ladies offering their own brand of friendship show what really matters.

My only 2 negatives about this book are: the Title - I don't understand the 'One Night' reference, and the other being that it had to come to an end! I wanted more!
