A wonderful story of grit, determination and overcoming adversity, this book highlights the first woman to compete directly against men in an equine Olympic event. Thank you to Capstone publishing for an advanced electronic copy of this fantastic book! I read it on NetGalley and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Excellent! I've loved the trend of bio picture books lately but sometimes trends can lead to some real duds. Jubilee is one of the greats - both the horse and this book! Loved learning about this story and the illustrations were lovely.
What a really nice story, this is a great book. It's nice to see more stories about people persevering despite injuries.
Very cute book! Great read for kids with disabilities and or kids that love horse or real just anybody very entertaining book!!!!
This is a very sweet and motivating book, ideal for young people and for grandparents like me. This is the true story of a young woman who has polio and has to relearn to ride horses. Through support and inner stamina, she and Jubilee learn to work together and to enter the Olympics. Of course, the story has a happy ending. It is good to learn a bit of history that reinforces both the human and the equestrian spirit and the amazing ability to communicate between woman and horse. The illustrations are great. This is just one wonderful, feel good book and I am glad I had the chance to review it through NetGalley. Thanks.
A touching story of triumph against adversity and the healing power of animals, this picture book tells the story of Lis Hartel, the first woman to compete against men at the Olympics. After becoming paralyzed from polio, Lis is told she'll never ride a horse again. However, she's so determined to do it, she winds up competing in dressage at the Olympics and winning a silver medal. Horse-loving kids will especially love this true story and discussion questions in the back matter invite them to go deeper into the book.

I had not heard of Lis and Jubilee's story before reading this book, but I used to volunteer with a therapeutic riding organization, so I was very interested in reading it. It is truly an inspiring story and this book was wonderful. This would be a great addition to any classroom. I love that it included discussion questions at the end of the story.
A bit wordier than the average kids book, but this would absolutely do well with history kids and horse girls alike, paired with a little disabled athlete success and this is a good one to keep back of mind
I absolutely loved Jubilee: The First Therapy Horse and an Olympic Dream by KT Johnson. Jubilee tells the story of Jubilee the Horse and her rider Lis from Denmark. Lis rode competitively in dressage until she contracted Polio and was not able to walk. Lis worked hard to recover from Polio and had to learn how to crawl and stand all over again. When Lis learned the basics all over again, she decided to ride horses all over again. Lis was given the option of riding Jubilee. Jubilee and Lis then began to compete and win dressage competitions. Lis and Jubilee became one of the first woman to compete in dressage in the Olympics.. Jubilee: The First Therapy Horse and an Olympic Dream tells of Jubilee and Lis’ Olympic triumph. I really enjoyed learning about this part of Olympic and Disability History and I highly recommend this book! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book! (This review is also on Goodreads.)
This is a super cute picture book with a great message for younger children. I would definitely recommend this for kids who may have disabilities or struggle with realizing that they may be able to achieve their dreams. This story is about a therapy horse (like a therapy dog, but a horse instead), and how that horse helps its rider/handler to achieve their dream of going to the olympics. It is a really great message over all for young kiddos and I can see how this would be really inspiring for them!
Jubilee is a lovely children's book telling the story of Lis Hartel, a Danish dressage rider who won two Olympic silver medals in 1952 and 1956 despite contracting polio at the age of 23 and being paralysed below the knees.
Everyone loves an underdog story and this is perfect. Not only did was Hartel successfully competing against non-disabled riders, her horse Jubilee was not originally purchased as a dressage mount, AND she was competing in the first Olympics in which dressage was open to women. I loved the moment when the gold medallist had to lift her from her horse and help her to the podium, and only then did the spectators realised she was partially paralysed. My only complaint is that I wanted more information, but that's because I'm an adult - I think the level of detail is appropriate for the target age.
There’s plenty of information about Lis Hartel, yet her story went unnoticed until the author happened upon it. The book is for all the kids and adults who love horses.
It is more than just about a very special horse Jubilee, it’s about persistence and endurance. It’s about the relationship between horse and rider.
Loved the questions at the end. Really gets you thinking. Great touch to a heartfelt story.
I really enjoyed watching equestrian events during the 2020 Summer Olympics, and was fascinated to read an advance copy of this nonfiction picture book about a woman who continued horseback riding after polio partly paralyzed her, bonded with a horse that could adapt to her unique needs, and went on to win an Olympic medal. This is a very inspiring story, and the writing and illustrations are both great. I really enjoyed this.
This is an excellent book for children and adults who are interested in horses, stories of disabled people persevering through obstacles, and stories about groundbreaking women in sports. I have never read anything like this, and found the unique story absolutely fascinating. This wonderful book is very educational, has an inspiring emotional arc, and includes additional information and discussion questions at the end to support classroom use. I would highly recommend this to libraries, schools, and families.
This is a sweet book with a wonderful message about perseverance and learning to trust yourself. I was on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next with this dynamic duo. It was great to learn more about this moment in history and the lasting impact they had on the world, especially for other people who are disabled.
A story about will and determination despite a fate we cannot change.
What we can change is what we decide to do about it.
This short storybook gave me hope and so much enthusiasm.
Love the illustrations and the concept.
Definitely a must read.
Thank you author and the publisher for the advance reading copy.
I read Jubilee with my 5 and 9 year old daughters and we all enjoyed the book. We all learned about dressage and a lady who successfully won 2 silver Olympic medals after polio paralyzed her. The story and illustrations were beautiful and age appropriate. We highly recommend.
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book for my honest opinion.

What a great story about determination , hard work, and overcoming the odds.
Lis Hartel loved riding horses, but when she is paralyzed by polio, from the waist down, she thinks she can never ride a horse again, but is bound and determined to.
This is the story of a woman who not only went back to riding horses, but was able to compete against men in the olympics in the 1950s, and won a medal. She was the first woman to do so, as well. And since she couldn't use her legs to let her horses know how to move, she had to use her hands, and be very subtle about it as ell.
Good introduction to a Olympian that I have never heard of, and expect that others feel that way as well.
I love these biographies of little know people, and how this story brings their life to view.

Jubilee is a wonderful story of perseverance and overcoming obstacles to reach your goals. Lis rides horses and dreams of competing in dressage. However, when she is ravaged by polio she thinks those days are long gone. She is told she will never ride again, but Lis knows that can’t be true. After hard work and training, Lis is able to heal enough to get back on a horse! Lis grows with her horse Jubilee, a horse who was never meant to take the stage, and together they overcome obstacles and even make it to the Olympics!
This is a very inspiring book that would be a great read for all young girls, whether they are interested in dressage or not. The illustrations are pretty and there is enough text on the pages to keep readers interested without being overwhelmed.
Thank you to NetGalley for the eARC.
A really lovely book with a really lovely story. I like there more stories are emerging that involve people with persistence to continue after an injury.
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC!
