I want to thank the author for this book. I’m a dedicated fan of Supernatural and I appreciate the labor of love demonstrated here. This is not the usual fan book in which we discuss various behind the scenes facts and actor bios (nothing wrong with that) but this is a refreshing look at the effects of the show as it relates to TV, streaming and the like.
Supernatural is very dear to those of us who call us members of the Supernatural family. We’ve been to the conventions. We’ve heard the stories. We know our boys! The reason for that is a lot of people who have taken on a similar labor of love, in addition to the approachability of the cast and crew of the show.
Eric Kripke is the creator of this show as well as several other things that are very popular. It was fun hearing about the many ways that his projects have been connected. Plenty of Supernatural easter eggs in The Boys!! This show was inspired by Buffy??? Really? I didn’t even like Buffy. Who knew?
This book explores how Supernatural came to be and its far reaching influence on genre shows and I loved hearing about it.
Three stars.
Supernatural is one of my all time favorite series, and I was really looking forward to this book. The author is clearly also a fan, and it's clear that this book was meant as a labor of love for the series and her fellow fans. It’s a deep dive into the minutiae of the series - the differences in seasons featuring various writing teams and/or showrunners, the inspirations and folklore behind the series, and all the details fans obsess over.
Unfortunately, while it was clearly well-researched and well-written, the end result was not nearly as much fun as the series it honors. It felt rather dry and clinical, more like a term paper on Supernatural than the "captivating exploration" promised in the blurb. I enjoyed it, but I just wanted more from it.
I’m grateful to Rowman & Littlefield Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review Supernatural: A History of Television's Unearthly Road Trip.
I wouldn't say I read this so much as I flipped through it - but it was a nice trip down memory lane. Good for fans of the series.
Supernatural sure was a phenomenon of its time. Reading this was something of a time capsule and It's an in depth look at something that has never really been done before.
I have been a fan of the show from the very beginning and I actually got a few friends and family members hooked onto the show.
Now this book is ok. I mean it was interesting but it wasn't as good as I was anticipating it to be.
Are you a fan of the TV Show, Supernatural, then you should definitely be buying this book! Full of fun and interesting facts and pictures, I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of this book! If you or someone you know is a fan of the show, then you should own this book!
Thank you Netgalley and Rowman & Littlefield for the chance to read Supernatural by Erin Giannini.. While this was an interesting read of one of my favorite shows, it is definitely meant for serious fans. It's an in-depth look at the show: the background of the episodes, the various plots through all 15 seasons and why the show changed from the original premise, to the various season-arcs throughout the show's history. While I found it interesting, it was not what I anticipated.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
An interesting and thorough look at a tv sensation.
4 Stars
This was a fun history of the show I loved so much for so many years. It was a little escape to reminance. I loved Sam and Dean and especially the earlier seasons where there was a new case each episode. Just a great time.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A captivating exploration of the television phenomenon that is Supernatural, with insights into characters, plots, and the show’s impact on pop culture.
When Supernatural first aired on the CW in 2005, it was dismissed by many for being “pretty guys fighting demons.” Yet Supernatural persisted for 15 seasons to become the anchor of the network’s line-up and the longest running genre series in US television history. In Supernatural: A History of Television's Unearthly Road Trip, Erin Giannini delves into the phenomenon of this cult series and its devoted fan base. Covering all 15 seasons, including the series finale that aired in 2020, this book examines the show’s predecessors, characters, major storylines, and fan activism. It also revisits creator Eric Kripke’s road to creating the series, draws surprising and revealing connections between the show and other series, and discusses the ways Supernatural responded to social and industry changes throughout its long run. Supernatural was the little show that could for 15 years, persisting beyond its original network’s lifespan and surviving the departure of its creator and showrunner, in no small part due to its loyal fans. Inspired by shows such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and going on to influence many shows that followed, Supernatural offers insight into how a series can adapt and grow to become a mainstay of primetime television.
