I had a strange experience reading Knights Chosen. For the entire book, I was seeing the potential, starting to get to know the characters and just about piecing it together. Then I reached the end and realised I never entirely figured it out.
I didn’t get to grips with the world it was set in: what was so special about the ‘Verities’; why the Knights were important/the extent of their abilities; even the world building itself. There was nothing bad or wrong about the writing, I just couldn’t full immerse myself in it.
There were a few moments that may be due to reading an ARC copy: one chapter suddenly referred to characters by their given name when it had been surnames up until then, so I had no idea who was who. Possibly rectified by the final version, but it certainly didn’t assist with making things clearer.
Yet I never wanted to put it down. There potential was there; I wanted to know how this was going to end and each chapter felt like it might be the one to pull things together. It’s a decent length book and I preferred it when it stayed with one character longer as I started to connect better, but the shifting narration stopped me taking that to its full potential.
I’m glad I read it. I can see the imagination and craft that has gone into building this unique world. The characters had depth to them. I just wish I’d connected more.
The book is an amazing mix of fantasy and sci-fi. There are not enough books daring to mix these two genres, simply because sci-fi is hard and it requires knowledge and research, while fantasy relies entirely on your imagination. I really like how they mix together in this book without compromising one another. The two just go as the two sides of the same coming and are woven into the plot really really well. I like the variety of characters - each one with a different personality and motive to do what they're doing. The world-building goes equally with the character development. It's an intriguing start, so I'll definitely check out the rest of the series, because the adventures of the Knights Corporealis have just begun!
