This series is a favorite of mine and I couldn't wait to read the third installment. I was looking forward to seeing more Bastien and Celine and when I started reading I was slightly disappointed that the focus seemed to be on Pippa and Arjun. However, the further into the story I got, the more I fell in love with these two and their stories. I loved that the reader was transported into another world outside of New Orleans and we got to discover so much background on Arjun. I also adored Pippa's quest to find Celine. That is a true friendship!
I did not even know that I needed more Pippa and Arjun and found myself loving them together and watching their tangled mess weave into a beautiful story. Pippa annoyed me somewhat in the previous books, but I found her more endearing and understandable in The Righteous. Arjun was always a favorite of mine, but I felt like we never really got to know him until this book. I'm happy to see secondary characters share the spotlight and I can't wait to see what unfolds in the next book!
I've loved this series from the beginning, and this was such a great addition to the already amazing story being woven.
I loved reading this book! It had such a great balance of romance, and suspense. I'm a huge fan of Renee Ahdieh's book and I dore the way she writes. It's very melodic! Highly recommend
Renee Ahdieh Fans rejoice! The third installment in The Beautiful Series is out today (12/7) and it’s everything we’ve been waiting for! While we embark on a new adventure with some of the minor characters from this series, the hype is definitely warranted for The Righteous.
I loved this book and really enjoyed diving back into this fabulous world of characters! I’ll admit that I was a little hesitant about this book shifting the focus to Pippa and Arjun instead of staying on Celine and Bastien, but Ahdieh did a wonderful job of using these characters to enhance the original storyline instead of just making this third book a filler book to hold over readers until the final book. I honestly think I may have liked this book better than The Damned (aka Book 2 in the series) just because of the pacing and the way that the story shifted. I enjoyed the plot and adored the romantic aspects between Pippa and Arjun.
If you haven’t read this series then WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!? This YA series is amazing and I cannot wait for the final book to come out!
*I received an ARC from Penguin Teen in exchange for my honest opinion.
I very much loved this book. It closed up almost all loose ends from the rest of the series, in a satisfying way whilst still bringing new action and excitement to the book.
I was expecting a story about Celine and Bastien, but finding out this story was more about Pippa and Arjun didn't disappoint me at all. I actually think I preferred their story. Arjun, the half-fae, took a trip to the Sylvan Vale to find a Healer to help Odette. Pippa snuck through after him and ended up getting caught by the fae. In order to save her, Arjun had to promise to marry her. They make quite the pair! I really enjoyed their story. But that end.... oh my gosh!
My issue with this book is much the same as with book one. I do not understand our protagonist. I do not understand why she has little to no character development or why she complains about other people doing certain things but does them herself
Ultimately I find this series to be a grand disappointment and most of my issues with it come back to simply the main character being unbearable
WOW... RTC. I finally had the time to re-read the entire series and finished this one. Just... yeah. Read this series. If you loved the first books in this series, you'll definitely love this one.
I really wanted to like this series and I just couldn’t. It was really slow and just did not engage me at all. I switched between physical and audio and neither really worked.
Thank you PRH Audio for the immersive complimentary audiobook!
THIS!!!!! I did not realize this was going to be Pippa and Arjun’s story and I loved this story even more for it. Pippa is the type of feminine lead that I adore in my fantasy novels. And Arjun was the icing on top of the fey land cake. These two had excellent chemistry and pretty decent banter for a young adult novel. As some of you may recall, I really struggled with book one. Then I took a chance on book two and it rekindled my appreciation. This one though has completely taken my reader heart by storm, and I regret nothing. It could almost be its own book. Not fully though.
The action and the atmosphere are well penned in The Righteous and keeps the reader on their toes. The world building is more intricate as the fey court and world surrounding this forbidden area is delicately crafted with eerie undertones and unwelcoming inhabitants. I even appreciated the addition of parts surrounding Celine and Bastien. Celine was not a favorite character, but she has grown through the delivery and crafting of Ahdieh. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate that as a reader. Though Pippa officially takes lead right now.
And that ending!! Yup. I will be waiting ever so patiently (well as patient as a book lover can be) for the next installment. I need to know more about Odette! I hope this continues on the path it has taken and the characters, world and battles continue to evolve as they have. If you were hesitant about this series or had a rough start like I did, I highly recommend taking the leap. Especially if you’re an audiobook lover! The narration is done by Lauren Ezzo. She effortlessly captures the emotion, plight and chaos that exudes from the plot. I absolutely adore the lightly accented tone and while some areas may be slightly high pitched, she still made Pippa everything I wanted her to be.
All of the thanks to PRH Audio and Penguin Teen for the opportunity to listen to and read this highly anticipated release for an honest and unbiased review. All thoughts are my own. True rating 4.5/5.
Arjun looked down at Pippa. Pippa looked up at Arjun. And it was enough.”
These two cuties really STOLE my heart. I have not swooned so much in such a long time, Arjun is such a romantic and their chemistry was off the charts!
Pippa won me over with her quiet courage and tenacious spirit. This duo is definitely one of my favorites
In this third installment of The Beautiful series, we follow Arjun and Pippa into the dangerous and mysterious world of the fae as we uncover secrets that could change everything! This book was thrilling, there was funny banter, there were the sweetest and most tender romantic moments, and there was of course action! I really enjoyed meeting and seeing all these new creatures- especially the little wisp cuties!
I will say some of the POVs were a little abrupt which made me confused at times but overall this was so enjoyable and Ahdieh is a MASTER at writing romances. I am in love!
Oh. My. God. WHERE IS BOOK FOUR??????
This return to my favorite band of New Orleans misfits was nothing short of incredible. From the opening of the world as we ventured into the Otherworld, to the new romance that is one to rival Celine and Bastien, I am absolutely obsessed and literally had to put it down when I read that last line and stare into space for like five minutes to process.
Arjun and Pippa’s chemistry was so fun to watch unfold as a marriage of inconvenience became one of love and respect. Seeing a new side of Bastien and Celine was both amazing and infuriating and I am so curious to see where their storyline goes next.
also. THAT CLIFFHANGER??????? Renée explain yourself please.
The Righteous was one of my most anticipated releases of 2021 after the cliffhanger from The Damned.
I was nervous to learn that The Righteous would be more so in the POV of Arjun and Pippa.
After finishing, I can say Arjun and Pippa are 2 cinnamon rolls I just wanna snuggle up with and read about forever.
Their back story, their chemistry, the friendship to lovers... I was all for it.
So what did I struggle with??
This book felt like it shouldn't belong in the series. A spin off? Sure.
The fae and creatures introduces just felt like a total 180 from the New Orleans dark creatures we fell in love with.
And Michael?
I think I skimmed 75% of everything he said and could still know exactly what was going on. He was an extreme disconnect for me.
And Bastien and Celine?
What. HAPPENED?!?!
The went from this dark, charming and mysterious couple to a girl who threw out all her feelings and common sense for a sketchy mom, an Bastien is just miserable in the fae world.
Overall thanks to the story line created for The Righteous and the adorable characters, I ended up really enjoying it still. But now the problem is I dont even want to go back to the OG couple
GIMME AAAALLLL THE PIPPA AND ARJUN.
Read if you love:
-the one bed trope
-fake engagement
-fae, goblins, vampires, witches, werewolves... you name it we got it here
-YA romance that is appropriate for all
-sweet lead characters
-the black cauldron ( I said what I said)
-a little "battle of the Montagues and the Capulets"
I have to admit that I'm so lost on this series nowadays. I LOVED The Beautiful and was dying (pun intended) for the vampire romance that we started with. Now, with all these other magical creatures and POV-switches, I wish Renee had just capped the first duology and started a companion one rather than a quartet. And how exactly does this book and TW&TD connect?! I might not find out.
So this book did not go how I inagined it would nonetheless it is a very great read and I’m in love with this series .I loved the world of Feyband their conflicts and really did enjoy Pippa and Arjun.
The Righteous being the third installment in The Beautiful series meant I was not really prepared for it to completely blow me away the way it did!
This has definitely become my favorite in the series and I cannot wait for the fourth and final book! Especially because the ending of this one left me SCREAMING. The author always outdoes herself with each book she writes but this one really hit me different in all the best ways. The writing was utterly beautiful and I never wanted it to end, it grabbed me right away and kept me turning each page very late into the night.
An instant five star read for me!
Actual rating: 3.5/5
The Righteous by Renée Ahdieh picks up a few days after the evens of The Damned. Celine and Bastien have fled to the Sylvan Vale while Odette lies in an endless slumber. When Arjun leaves to find Odette a healer, Pippa follows him into the Vale in a desperate bid to find Celine. That’s when things take a turn for the worse as she’s mocked and toyed with by the fae gentry, leaving Arjun to save her in the wildest way possible: by getting engaged.
While the previous two books offered occasional insight into Pippa and Arjun, The Righteous fully focuses on their characters. Pippa, who came off as kind and loving if a little subdued becomes an imposing character in her own right. Her arc throughout the book is remarkable as she learns to be more confident in herself and reach for the unexpected. Ahdieh makes this plainly obvious both through Pippa’s internal monologue, as well as how Arjun perceives her.
On the opposite end, Arjun spends the book learning to be vulnerable. Having grown up in the Sylvan Vale, he used nonchalance and boredom to protect himself from the fae but his rash decision to get engaged to Pippa means he has to open up to her. Their relationship cements itself quickly over the first half, allowing them to face the events of the second half as a pair.
While I liked reading about this, I did think it came out of nowhere. There isn’t much indication in the previous books of an attraction between these two and it was all too fast. As much as I enjoyed the whirlwind romance between Celine and Bastien, there could have been space for Arjun and Pippa to have more interactions alongside them. I’d even go as far to say as the whole thing was a little insta-lovey once the two were thrust together.
As far as the plot is concerned, it was disjointed. The series itself has a greater plot that involves the Horned Throne and it becomes central to The Righteous, but only in the second half of the novel. Given how The Damned ended, I thought it would take a more central role earlier on, instead there was a sudden change where we went from concentrating on Arjun and Pippa to the larger geopolitics of the fae. I won’t deny those geopolitics were very interesting. From the Wyld’s crumbling court to the Vale’s grander ambitions for the realm, to a surprise alliance, it almost overshadowed Arjun and Pippa’s shenaningans. I look forward to seeing how Ahdieh plans to resolve all the threads she’s left hanging, because it certainly looks like an epic battle is on the way.
Like previous books, The Righteous jumps POVs. Mostly focusing on Pippa and Arjun, we do get to see other beloved and not-so-beloved characters. Emilie remains in the shadows in this one, Michael takes on a more direct role as he’s determined to, also, find Celine, while Bastien and Celine are exploring the Vale with Lady Silla who is less than thrilled by Bastien’s presence. I liked having the fuller picture, though I have to admit Michael’s chapters did bore me at times as he doesn’t bring much to the story at the moment.
The best part of the book remains Adhieh’s writing. Its lyrical quality brings the world to life once again, with the Vale taking center stage through Pippa’s inexperienced eyes. Despite how description-heavy the book is, it didn’t take away from the plot. Rather it gave Ahdieh’s story a fairy-tale feel.
I’ll admit I didn’t enjoy The Righteous by Renée Ahdieh as much as the previous two books. I missed Celine and Bastien, and Ahdieh could have done more to ease readers into this new focus. She makes her plot intriguing enough that I will be finishing the series though, and I’m very curious to see who the next book will focus on given the growing cast of POVs.
Well this took a turn. I was enjoying the story of Celine and Bastian, but this book was focused on a completely different couple - Pippa and Arjun. It was a cute love story and all, just wasn't sure how it adds to the other storyline. I'm sure it will be revealed in due time.
I liked how this was also more focused on the Fey world, their troubles and in the end hints of what's to come and reasons for all the lies, etc. An unexpected twist in the end, though completely within the lines of the characters.
I think I'm done with the series. I went into this book thinking that this series was a trilogy and that we'd get a fantastic conclusion after the cliffhanger from the previous book. Alas, that is not the case.
While I did enjoy parts of Pippa and Arjun's story, I found myself losing interest in the story as I finished this book. Pippa's and Arjun's POVs were by far the better sections of this book. Nothing new is really learned from Bastian's and Celine's POVs.
4.5/5
Another amazing sequel to the Beautiful quartet. I will admit this book was nothing like the others in a lot of ways and yet it fit perfectly. This focuses more on Pippa and Arjun and holy cow was I there for that! i did miss having Celine and Bastien however and it didn't always feel natural when we did get their chapters because of the change in focus so that's the reason I've been nit-picky and given it 4.5 (rounded up to 5). But I also found The Beautiful and The Damned to both be five star reads so having this be the 'weakest' at 4.5, ain't too shabby.
I loved the development of Pippa and Arjun together though I wish it had been drawn out more. Because time runs different in certain parts...which I won't say where, what is really only one day for 60-65% of the book for Arjun and Pippa is more like a week or so back in New Orleans.
I think that it would have benefited to have more of Celine and Bastien to tie them in more but I also feel like I could read a whole spinoff series about Pippa and Arjun.
I WILL SAY THAT ENDING THOUGH, AHHHHH
I'm not sure I'm going to be able to handle the final book tbh.
Thank you so much to the Publisher and NetGalley for an eARC of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
