** Thank you to Penguins Teen for the advanced copy, for my honest review**
What I love is that we pick up right where The Damned left off, with Celine and Sebastian in the other world and Pippa on the hunt to find them. The Court of Lions is left in shambles with Sebastian not there and Odette in like a coma state. Arjun is a sighted to look after the family, so he decides to go to the Vale, otherworld, to find the answers. While Pippa is supposed to be set to marry her betrothed, she fears for Celine’s safety and takes it upon herself to find what really happened to her.
Again set in a world full of magic, mystery, and intrigue, I was honestly in love with story. Pippa is hilarious and Arjun is a grump like always. Little does he know that Pippa doesn’t want to marry her betrothed but rather is in love with Arjun, so it makes for comical altercations. I love that these well written side characters I love that these side characters were brought to life and get their own story in a sense. The scenery and imagery is so well developed and lyrical in a sense, that I feel like I stepped into the pages of the book. You have these two contrasting Ying/Yang worlds, New Orleans and the Vale, that makes me want to go there and step into a fountain and be transported. All the creatures are much more developed and even scary some. You also find this story within a story, sort of like The Damed, that make you sit there and want more.
Who doesn’t want to read about found family’s and trying to protect those that mean the most to you, and this book delivers that and much more. Out of all the books so far, this one is hands down the best… and now I can’t wait for book 4!!!
THE RIGHTEOUS was such a strong installation in this incredibly immersive, beautiful series. Renée Ahdieh is a master of the historical fantasy genre and this book is no exception. After THE DAMNED, I wasn't sure what to expect from this one, and when I heard that we'd be following Pippa I was very curious as to how this would go down, but oh my goodness, it was incredible! I loved getting to know Pippa and Arjun more, both separately and as people thrust together in a dire situation and having to rely on each other. We really delve into their histories and motivations and they are so well-developed; in addition, their dynamic together was so much fun to follow, especially because they don't know much about each other and have to build a friendship and learn to trust one another, and oh my gosh I just had a blast following them! We do get perspectives from those we know and love from the past books, though Pippa and Arjun are the main POVs. I also really enjoyed the time we spent in the realm of the Fey; in the previous book I wasn't expecting it and I didn't love that element, but it really grew on me in this book! Most of the book does take place in the Fey world and we travel to new places and meet new people, which I really liked. This one set up nicely for the conclusion and left me with many questions, which is all to say I have no idea how this is going to wrap up but I can't wait to see!
oh my god the way i dramatically gasped and had to close the book for a solid minute to process THE LAST LINE. fans of renee's other books; you guys are in for a treat.
i loved this book. i loved the characters. the characters, especially pippa and arjun, really just made this book for me. as soon as i found out this book was going to follow pippa and arjun, i just knew i was going to love it. and i did.
those two- please i would literally die for both of them. i adore pippa: her quiet courage, her random facts, her unexpected humor, and hows she's just such a genuinely good, sweet person. arjun, my love. literal love of my life right here. his wit, his protectiveness, his sarcasm, his loyalty, how he makes parathas for pippa (!!) and emphasizes how colonialism does not suddenly make him an englishman. such important conversations, and thank god they did not shy away.
THE ROMANCE BETWEEN THEM OH MY GODDD i was grinning and screaming and swooning and giggling like an idiot with their every interaction. some of the scenes they had together.... literally kill me, they were too good. the banter and angst and all the feels- it is worth it i promise. its everything i could have hoped for and more for the relationship.
ONE BED TROPE !!! FAKE MARRIAGE TROPE !!! (NOT TOXIC) JEALOUSY TROPE ?!?
the few complaints i have are somewhat minor but they bugged me more and more as the book went on, thus the 4 stars instead of 5. up until around 50%, it was a definite 5 stars for me. everything was going perfectly. but then new plot points and new characters and then old, forgotten plot points and old, forgotten characters just kept getting brought up and it was getting more and more confusing. i found myself skimming so many of the chapters because they just seemed to be relaying the same, boring information or they had too much new information that i just couldn't keep up with. the pacing was just so off; the last couple of pages were a complete rollercoaster of too many things happening at once, while for the entire second half of the book, it felt like not much important happened. im not really sure how to say it, but this book just felt incomplete. its almost like nothing really happened in terms of plot, and im not sure how i feel.
the second very minor complaint might just be a personal preference, but the slight instalove... it was a little sudden, don't you think? ok to be fair, as much as i love the author, she does have a tendency to just have a very fast-paced, sudden relationship almost pop out of nowhere- basically instalove is in every one of her books. as i said before, i obviously still completely adore pippa and arjun, but i wish they had a little more time to just get to know each other instead of literally two days before they got all mushy and in love.
i read this book incredibly fast and i did overall really enjoy the righteous, and i CANNOT WAIT for the next one!
I typically go in blind to all books. However, this one I wish I had read about it before hand. I was not prepared to have this book about Pippa and Arjun. With that said I loved it. The two of them are so opposite yet you want to see them together. I loved the fey worlds and even the conflicts between them. I am not so sure I can wait till next year to see how this all pans out??? Can I have a sneak peek now?
If you have not read any of these books you need to! What's not to love? Vampires, Fey, Werewolves, New Orleans and a mystical world?? Yes Please!
I'll be completely upfront and say that I was so excited by this cover and the quick skim of the description--and a new book by Renee Ahdieh, whose other work I've absolutely loved!--to realize that this was a follow-up book in a series that I haven't read. It's now on my (much too long) list of books to read so that I can appreciate this stunning book fully. That's my bad!
I have been waiting for this book since forever and a day, and I can't believe I've already finished it. I don't know what you're doing if you haven't read this amazing trilogy, but if you needed more hot vampires in your life after binging TVD for the eightieth time, try this series.
"It’s a tragedy to fall in love, is it not?" Arjun snorted. "One of epic proportions. As if your heart is dancing along a cliff with a smile on its face, ignoring all your warning."
I was crossing my fingers so hard for Arjun & Pippa and Renee Ahdieh certainly delivered in The Righteous! Did I tear up a few times? ABSOLUTELY. Arjun Desai is charming and readers will by captivated by his warmth and compassion. Arjun = meri pyaari. He can be my knight on a white horse any day!
I really enjoyed Pippa's growth and character development. She is smart, witty, kind and loyal. Girlfriend is brave now! Renee’s characters have touched my soul in a way I could have never imagine. They have wormed their way into my heart! The rich world building and the swoony romance…I. AM. HERE. FOR. IT! Grabby hands for the conclusion to The Beautiful series! Book FOUR! I need The Court of the Lions back together! YA fantasy readers get in on this series! You wont regret it!
Me...running to preorder The Righteous.

🎶Song: Damned to Love You by Miserable 🎶
There's a type of elegance that comes along with reading The Beautiful series. The Righteous is the third installment in this magnificent fantasy, In tune with our obsession with vampires. Author Renée Ahdieh brings a fresh take on these truly compelling beings we can’t seem to get enough of, with her beautiful writing, captivating world setting, character development, and all the surprises along the way. I was so pleased to find out, The Righteous is written through Pippa and Arjun’s point of view, in third person writing. An opportunity to dive deeper into their characters (Arjun most importantly, I’m obsessed) and cause that hyperventilating feeling of ANGST that only the best of novels bring out in us.
I loved, loved this book. Definitely my favorite out of the three so far, and I can only imagine what the next book will be like. It will absolutely, undoubtedly destroy me.
The Righteous had me captivated right away from the beginning to the heart racing ending! This book focuses more on Pippa and Arjun who we met in the previous books (yes, you need to read them in order).
I'll admit I was slightly skeptical about how I felt about this diverting from Celine and Bastien to focus more on Pippa and Arjun. I usually struggle when the side characters become the main character BUT not in this case! I ABSOLUTELY loved it!
Pippa and Arjun have such good chemistry and banter together! I was swooning, giggling and even feeling emotional over them! They stole my heart! It was so wonderful to see Pippa's growth. I just love her sweet spirit and feistiness! Then, of course, our smart, witty Arjun can do no wrong in my eyes. *clutches pearls and SWOONS.* I loved how he was protective but yet so sarcastic with Pippa! They were an absolute DELIGHT together!
The end was intense and I'm DYING for the next one! Please go easy on my heart Renee! I need everyone to be okay! Also, it was so exciting when we got to see Celine and Bastien in this as well! Michael's appearances I could have lived without tho. 🙈 You'll definitely wanna read the first two books and preorder this one because the world/characters are FANTASTIC!
5⭐️
Thank you Penguin Teen for the ARC!! This book was amazing! I loved the first two books, and I loved this one even more! I’m so glad that she wrote a book focused on Pippa and Arjun! This book was absolutely perfect, and I wish I could give it even more stars! This series has such fun characters, an amazing writing style, and crazy plot twists! I wish I could go back in time so I could read this series for the first time again! I literally could not put this book down because it was so good! The ending was so shocking and I honestly am so excited for the next book to come out!
Fantasy melting pot.

I just finished one of my most anticipated books of the year and I need to rave about it. If you are new to my page, you probably associate me with all the vampires, and you wouldn’t be wrong, but actually all of the fae (or fey) are my favorite and I love a story that includes vamps in the ranks of creatures originally from beyond the veil.

Renée Ahdieh’s series, The Beautiful, is everything I love in a story. She has reached inside my head and pulled out all the things I crave and placed them in each book and just when I think she forgot something, it’s in the next installment. The Righteous, third book in the quartet, takes us back to the land of the fey and adds some fake engagement for two characters I love. Set against the backdrop of this very dangerous land, Ahdieh creates a subplot that weaves its way into the overarching story of Celine and Sébastien. This is masterful storytelling and I am loving seeing new pieces fall into place in a book filled with political intrigue, swoony romance, secret histories, strong women, deadly magic, and a diverse set of characters. If you haven’t started this series yet, let me give you a list of all my favorite things that live in this story:
- historical setting
- diverse characters from all over the world
- the french language
- lots of “bad idea” bargains
- so much good kissing
- all my favorite fae creatures, and some I will tolerate (cough cough werewolves)
- beautiful clothes
- tortured pasts
- the strength of love
- high tension of all kinds (but my favorite is the romantic tension)

Have I convinced you yet? The Righteous publishes on 12/07/2021, so now is the perfect time to dive in.

I'll admit that I was highly skeptical when I heard this book would be about Pippa and Arjun because Pippa has never really been a favorite of mine in this series but I was pleasantly surprised! Pippa's character arc was great and I'm glad I had the opportunity to read from her perspective and gain a better understanding.
Like the two previous books in the series, the plot was on the slower side but the amazing writing more than made up for that. The author is such a gifted storyteller, it's always so easy for me to picture her characters and settings that she creates.
I did miss hearing about Celine and Bastien more and I do wish there had been a bit of a better balance between characters like in The Beautiful.
The ending left me absolutely speechless and I'm so excited for book four!
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and Penguin Teen for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
This book SHOOK ME TO MY CORE! The drama and deceit in this book was here and I was HERE. FOR. IT! The characters are so easy to fall in love with. ANDDDD! So is the love interest Bastein! But, i also love how we got to see more of the other characters pippa and arjun. Can't wait for the next one, Infact i NEED the next one!
I was so excited to read this book because I knew it was going to follow my favorite, Arjun! Renee really served us the best tropes in this, with the whole fake marriage plotline! I genuinely SCREAMED when that plot started!
The things that have me rating the book 4 instead of 5 are: a) I thought this was going to be the final installment so seeing a the loose ends continue to grow caused me some mild panic and raised a whole lot of questions until I. realized it was a quartet and b) The beginning felt a bit slower and while I think Michael is an interesting character I didn't want to focus on him and genuinely just wanted more of Arjun and Pippa so it was a bit frustrating getting tossed between a story I wasn't as interested in and the one I really wanted to follow.
HOWEVER, I do think this is setting up to give us a banger of a finale and I'm really excited to see how it all comes together, ESPECIALLY WITH THAT ENDING THAT HAD ME SCREAMING (as usual)!
I absolutely loved the scenes with Arjun and Pippa and getting to see what went on in their minds and how they reacted to different scenarios! I loved how the characters interacted and i was on the edge of my seat waiting for the other shoe to drop!
Surprisingly, the second book of this quartet is still my favorite but this one is a close second just because of the couple and that ENDING reveal!
This book was a complete rollercoaster, but nothing could have prepared me for the last line of the book! Renée confirmed a few months ago in an interview that this book would feature some characters from The Wrath and the Dawn, so let me just say that if you are a fan of that duology, you have to read this book.
Backtracking to the beginning of the novel, The Righteous picks up a few days after the events of The Damned, in which Celine and Bastien have fled to the land of the Fey and The Court of Lions is left to deal with the aftermath of the events of The Damned. Meanwhile, Pippa is determined to find out what’s going on with Celine after being left in the dark for so long and sets off on her own journey to track down her best friend.
I knew going into this novel that this book would be Pippa and Arjun’s book and seeing their interactions in The Beautiful and The Damned left me so excited for their scenes together. And the desi rep with Arjun’s character was incredible. Renée has proven again and again how easy it is to be an author and respectfully write characters from backgrounds different from your own, and the case was no different with Arjun’s character. I really loved the small conversation that Pippa and Arjun had about Arjun’s relationship with his heritage as an Indian man whose country was colonized by Pippa’s country. This characteristic of Arjun (that he never considers himself an Englishman, or a man of the country that invaded his home country) is what made me admire him so much in the previous two books, and I loved how this simple conversation really highlighted the types of conversations that are important for interracial couples to have.
Celine and Sébastien's chapters were fun to read too, and I think my only critique of this novel was the pacing/storytelling. There were some chapters where a tiny insignificant issue was drawn out for so long and some chapters where a seemingly important issue was resolved really quickly. There was honestly a lot happening in this book, and it often took me a while to fully wrap my head around everything. It felt a little disconnected from the first two books and the characters (especially Bastien and Celine, especially) as well. I think this occurred because it was turning out to be a filler book that was gearing you up for the finale in Book 4.
Once again, I highly highly recommend this book if you’ve read the first two books in this series, or any of Renée's books before!
Ive enjoyed this series but this one sort of dragged in parts for me. I think since the pov switched and we were seeing the progression of the story through side characters. I grew to like them but it was a hard to adjust to. As for the story, we spent a good amount of time in the fae world. I enjoyed that aspect. These books have drifted from being vampire books though. I will read the 4th book and I am excited to see how it’ll all be wrapped up.
Initial Thoughts
So I dove head first into this series thinking it was a duology was pleasantly surprised to learn that it’s actually a quartet! Anyway, after the ending of THE DAMNED, I needed this book!
Some Things I Liked
Be still my little half Indian heart I loved Arjun Desai so much. His stories of his childhood in Bombay, the scene where he made a paratha for Pippa, everything about him. He’s my new book boyfriend. Even his identity struggle as an ethereal, half-fey, spoke to me. I just resonated so strongly with his character and I loved it.
Pippa. Didn’t love her in the first two books but I was absolutely won over here. I love it when authors can take kinda bleh characters and turn them into characters I can’t live without.
The plot twists. I am so here for the drama, deception, and twists that this series is giving me.
Series Value
It goes without saying, I am going to keep reading. This series is easily my favorite Renée Ahdieh series yet.
Final Thoughts
Don’t sit on this series. Read it. Obsess over it with me. Remember that I have dibs on Arjun 😉 but do yourself a favor, fall in love with this series.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
**Review will be published to my blog/Instagram on release day!**
BEST OF THE BUNCH [SO FAR].
I’m still in shock over that ending y’all. SHOOKETH. And I can’t wait for more people to read this so we can chat about it because my mind is whirling with possibilities. Where does it go from here?! Way to set-up for an action packed finale.
I loved that this focused on Pippa and Arjun (and HELLO some of my favorite tropes!!). This turned into one of the few cases of more insta-ish love that I was all in for. Those two just worked. Fantastic chemistry, swoony kisses, and dire situations. The majority of the POV’s were from them and I liked the dynamic shift.
There’s points-of-view from some of the other characters in the series too. They’re many angles to the plot and seeing the shifting sides from werewolves, vampires, and fae are creating a thickly woven story.
I am very excited for the last book in this series. What started out as a meh series for me is turning into another highly enjoyable one.
Overall audience notes:
- YA Fantasy
- Language: very little
- Romance: kisses to closed door
- Violence: physical altercations, weaponry, war themes
- Trigger/Content Warnings: domestic and child abuse recounted
I’m a huge fan of Renee’s books and I’m so sad that this series has come to an end. I’ve read The Beautiful and The Damned! I loved The Righteous. Full review will be up on pop-culturalist on pub day!!
Carefully crafted worldbuilding and character arcs that build well from the previous novels make for an intriguing, pulse-pounding, and expansive third installment in what will surely be a series not worth missing!
I am going to preface this review by acknowledging the fact that this book is not out until December and I will be mentioning some things about what happens in this book so if you are sensitive to any types of "spoilers", maybe wait until this book comes out to read this.
With that being said, this was a pretty good installment. In the beginning, I was really really enjoying this and it was shaping up to be a 4 or 4.25 star book. However, the muddling middle did kind of drag down my rating a bit.
The plot, like both previous books in the series, is very slow. I would say there are maybe 5 plot points in this entire 370-page book. Usually, I don't mind character-driven/slow-paced stories but this one seemed to drag on for a really long time at points. I think with a little more editing, some of the superfluous information and scenes and chapters could have been cut down or eliminated completely, making this book more concise and succinct. The first 70 pages were so quick to get through, but then things slowed down A LOT before picking back up in like the last 20 pages.
Pippa and Arjun were interesting to follow. Still, it's kind of weird where each book in this series followed one or two main characters primarily and then shoves all the others into the background. While Pippa and Arjun were fine people to read about, it was kind of frustrating that we barely got to see Celine or Bastien or Odette or anyone else. Book one did such a good job introducing this huge cast, but since The Damned, things have become so much more narrow-focused. I will also say that the few scenes we did get from Bastien and Celine were low-key super cringey. I don't want to go into any further detail for fear of spoiling, but...I was confusion.
The writing in this book slapped. Renée Ahdieh can definitely string a beautiful sentence together, and while kind of...much at some points, was very enjoyable to read.
Also...the ending! Let's just say that some stuff is about to go down in book 4. Also, fans of The Wrath and the Dawn will be very pleased about something that happens in the chapter before the epilogue.
Also, thank you so much to Penguin Teen for sending me an ARC of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
