Imogen is happily married and has a high powered career that could see her rise to the very highest levels of management in her fathers banking company. But Imogen makes a very foolish decision and her actions are noticed by her arch nemesis Michael.
Michael becomes her boss. Every day is a living hell as he works her 24/7 and takes all the credit. It seems like every week he comes up with some new way to torment her and Imogen cannot see a way out as Michael will reveal her secret if she tries to leave.
This is a great twisty and dark psychological thriller that I read in one sitting.
Definitely an author that I will follow and read some of his earlier books.

Very interesting plot to get your teeth into. It played out very well. Interesting book to read. With this book you could feel yourself getting sucked into the storyline having real emotional reactions to what was going on. GreT when a book does that
As usual another absolute cracker of a read from Daniel. Short snappy chapters to keep my interest. He writes books I don't want to put down.
The Promotion is a gripping thriller by Daniel Hurst, exploring the lengths a person might go to in order to escape an unbearable situation. Imogen’s life is one of fear and desperation as she attempts to keep her darkest secret hidden while struggling to avoid the wrath of her evil boss. Her situation is made all the more desperate when it becomes clear that she is completely powerless against him. The reader is pulled into her journey of desperation and moral struggle, right up until the surprising and unexpected conclusion. With tight writing and complex characters, The Promotion is an entertaining read that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.
I really enjoyed this book , definitely had me hooked from the first chapter . Interesting how the story progressed. I enjoyed the ending after the many twists and turns . It was very well written too . I will be looking for more from this author . 5=stars from me
Good plot, well written, interesting characters and a great twist you don't see coming - why did I wait so long to read! Highly recommend
I enjoyed Daniel Hurst's The Boyfriend, so I was excited to read The Promotion...and it was great too! The book is about Imogen, who is being blackmailed by Michael, the boss from hell, and I liked that the story was told from both of their perspectives. The characters were interesting to read about, and there were quite a few surprises in the book. Thanks to NetGalley and Inkubator Books for giving me the opportunity to read and review The Promotion...I'm excited to read more by this author. : )
All the components of a great thriller, engaging plot, shady characters and a great twist you don’t see coming!
Imogen is second in command at her father, William's, old bank. She is married to Evan, a school teacher. She should be happy with her life, right? Unfortunately Michael, her boss, has a secret about her...one that could cost her everything she holds dear....even her freedom. We are told early on what the secret is and all through the book we deal with Michael being an ass to Imogen. Imogene broke the law and Michael has the evidence to prove she has done so. It turns into quite the cat and mouse game and that ramped up the tension.

The Promotion by Daniel Hurst is a tale of suspense set in the working world. The story revolves around Imogen, who is being blackmailed by her boss Michael. You see, Imogen did something horrible a few years ago, and Daniel found out then. He's been holding it over her head ever since. Now he's taking promotions from her, taking credit for her work, etc. What can Imogen do to get out of this toxic situation?
Here is a chilling prologue from the Prologue:
"The death of an employee in a company would always be big news, but this was huge.
This wasn't just anybody who had died.
It was the boss."
Overall, The Promotion is a tale of minor suspense masquerading as a thriller. The first half of this book reads like an enemies-to-lovers romance a la The Hating Game. I had to check that this was actually a thriller. There was a thrilling scene in the middle of the book, but then nothing after. There wasn't even a climax. I'm wondering why this is classified as a thriller. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, you can check out this book, which is available now!
Daniel Hurst is a new author to me. And I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I have to say I found a new author that I will be reading more by in the future.
I highly recommend.
I voluntarily reviewed this book.
I loved this book! Daniel Hurst is fast becoming a go-to automatic read author for me. I really enjoyed reading this and I thought the way the main character worked was great. I enjoyed the plot, the storyline and where we ended up at the end. I felt like it was worth reading and who doesn't love when a slimy man starts to get his comeuppance?!!
I have read several of Hursts novels and always enjoy them. Here we have two really unlikable characters but somehow I liked their flaws and self centeredness enough which pushed this story into unexpected ways. Always ready for another book by this author.
Another thrilling read by a new favorite author of mine. I have just finished the boyfriend written by Daniel, and can see his talent throughout. Recommended for anyone who loves a great read!
I am 40% done with the book. But I will not be finishing this book. It has nothing to do with the author or the writing. It is the subject matter. Years ago I was working in a bank when money went missing. It was the assistant manager and the head teller. We knew it but unfortunately for them my Uncle was the president of the bank. It did not end well and I asked for a transfer. So I cannot read about banking shenanigans. Not even as fiction.
This is difficult to write, I did not finish this book because it just wasn’t for me. I DNF’d and I’m sorry but I guess that’s what makes reading so great; the diversity. Not for me, apologies.
Loving Daniel Hurst's books.
The plot is quick and I love his narration style. The story talks about work place politics and how tough it is to reach the top and then to maintain that position.
I liked the way the female character decided to end the toxic cycle that was at play at her work place.
Thank you Netgalley and Inkubator books for the ARC
The Promotion follows Imogen and her boss, Michael, both working at the corporate offices in the UK for a big bank. Michael has uncovered a misstep in Imogen's past and holds this over her head. Making her secret public would end her career and possibly her marriage. To make matters worse, her father's health is deteriorating as a result of dementia and Imogen needs more income to pay for his care. 3.5 Stars rounded UP!
This book was easy to read and the pages just flew by but I thought some of the occurrences were a bit over the top and hard to believe. Still, I never thought about giving up on the book and found it to be one of those reads where you can suspend your disbelief and just enjoy the characters, flawed as they are, and the plot. There were a lot of inner monologues which got repetitive but all-in-all, a fun read!
Thank you to Inkubator Books via Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC of this novel. All opinions expressed are my own.
Gah!!! I hated that ending! Maybe I’m a bit jaded by all the crazy thrillers I’ve read but this wrapped up so politely it pissed me off! It only “worked” because the oppressed party was a woman. That’s why it irritates me.
So why so high a rating? Well, I liked the writing, premise and characters. The alternating viewpoints were great! Michael was so evil and so fun! I plowed through this in a day and a half and it’s been a long time since I was so engrossed in a story. The ending, though disappointing for me, does fit but that didn’t negate the story as a whole. I would read more by this author.

Great book, by an author I will read more of! Thrilling plot, great writing and brilliant characters. Highly recommend to others.
