Daniel Hurst is a new author to me and I will definitely look out for more of his work . I enjoyed the way the book was written even though there were a few very unpleasant characters. A rewarding ending that gives the reader an important message. This is a book I would happily recommend. Thank you to Netgalley for the opportunity to read an ARC
A very entertaining and fun read.
I always love a good thriller to have with my cup of tea and this did not disappoint!
Since I really enjoyed the "20-Minutes" Series by Daniel Hurst I was glad to receiving The Promotion as an ARC.
The story concentrates around Imogen who tries to make her way in business life working in a bank.
Michael her colleague became her friend on their shared journey.
Until Michael gets promoted and Imogen is left out.
However she can't really fight this situation as she has a secret that Michael knows about.
He even blackmails her. Another proof that you should always keep a safety-distance to your colleagues ;)
Imogen doesn't want to give in that easily and starts digging into Michael's life. So let the twists and turns begin. The Promotion is a fast paced psychological thriller that keep meon the edge of my seat and which I thought very relevant in today's business life.
Thanks #Netgalley #Inkubator Books for this ARC
I really enjoyed this book!! Both main characters were quite unlikeable. Which normally I hate but it really added something to this book. This was a very quick read for me personally. The tension between the characters was intense! And the twists kept me reading. I also love the vibes of the bank atmosphere. The 2 point of views was slightly annoying at times but not enough to make me think less of the book! Overall enjoyed and will recommend!
First off, thank you NetGalley for having this book. I enjoyed the writing style very much. I had never read anything by Daniel Hurst before but it will not be my last. I've already downloaded another of his books to my kindle.
Imogen works in a bank as 2nd in command, she is trying to move up the ranks like her father had done. Unfortunately, her boss Michael has dirt on her from something she has done earlier in life. If he spills it he could ruin her whole life. He is very evil to her, working her like a horse. She can't complain to anyone because like I said it can ruin her. So how does she deal with it and keep on working? Well, you'll have to read it to see.
Overall, I liked this book. Some of the things that occurred in the book are a little unrealistic in life but hey it worked in the book. Thank you Daniel Hurst for this entertaining thriller.
Working in banking, I couldnt wait to see how relatable and accurate this story was and yeah it holds up not too badly. It's a standard domestic noir and written from 2 different points of view. Neither character is a paragon of virtue but I guess that makes them more relatable and realistic in a way. Its not a book that will take you weeks to get through its quite quick and easy. I had it finished in a couple of hours on a Sunday afternoon but it was an enjoyable, lighthearted way to fill a dreary Sunday. Don't go expecting something that will have you racking your brains or something too deep but it is a good story for what it is
This is the story of how Imogen tried her best to get a promotion. This was tagged as a psychological thriller. I'm slowly trying out this genre and so far I had some interesting reads.
This was a fast read for me despite the plot not interesting me that much. I was hoping to get the 'thriller' vibe on it but didn't get it
We have an unlikeable main character who seems to be doing mistakes after mistakes. We also have villains, one with a very petty reason and the last one that appeared when the novel is about to end. I guess that's the twist?
I think the only one fleshed out on the story is Imogen and as much as I want to root for her, I can't. I was actually waiting for her to get caught and be punished or something.😅
I'm a bit disappointed that she got away with what she did to Michael. I'm not siding with Michael but I was waiting for her to get caught in relation to that.✌
Though it wasn't that exciting of a read, I still liked the writing and some points stated by the book. It was an okay-ish read.👍

Avoid it! It is really not worth of your time. My brain hurt so bad that I had to stop at 20%.
First of all the book is written in such a basic English that it is only suitable for non English speakers learning the language. Sentences are short and the language is very simple. So unless that's you, don't waste your time.
Moreover, it is written from two points of views - Michael's and Imogen's - but they both sound the same. If not for the name in front of each chapter, it might be hard to differentiate who is speaking now. Also, both characters are extremely superficial with very little development and extremely dull. I could not care about either of them. Imagine having to read their inner thoughts for hours straight. Kill me now.
Lastly the plot makes no sense. The boss Michael knows her secret and thus he treats her poorly at work. Imogen's secret is disclosed within 10-15% of the book and it is quite boring and actually reflects very poorly on Imogen's intellect for even trying to do what she has done. But there is no direct impact on Michael's life but he treats it as it was personal although we are told that both Michael and Imogen were very good friends until that point. p.s. "the boss" is way overused. Are we in the mafia here?
I do not know why this book has too many good reviews but either there are a lot of non English speakers learning the language or someone did some serious promoting as common nowadays.
Mr Hurst, please read some classics and perhaps you will get inspired to expand your dictionary. Also, have you ever heard of "show, don't tell"? Writing in a third person might have helped.

To work in banking one has to be thick-skinned and this story is all about it, however, going to the extreme. There certainly are differences in how people act when with family and friends and when they are at work. Too bad sometimes the difference is so profound that we have Hyde and Jekyll. It does not matter how hard Imogen works, or how well she performs, her efforts will not be adequately recognized and her life is getting more stressful by the minute. There are also so many secrets hidden behind the walls that when they come open the story has an unexpected ending. Easy to read and entertaining!
My thanks to NetGalley and publisher Inkubator Books for the electronic copy.
Imogen, in her mid-forties, has worked for an international bank at the UK office for 20 years. Her father had been general manager and had bought his daughter into the business as an intern. She's worked hard but when her father retired Michael got the job instead of her.
Michael makes her life hell and he enjoys every moment. Not only at work but making sure she has little time with her husband by giving her deadlines which involve weekend working. He's vindictive, and nasty, and there's nothing Imogen can do about it: she can't complain; she can't leave - why not? Because Michael discovered her secret and now he has a powerful hold on her.
Imogen goes to some imaginative lengths to break Michael's hold over her - then he's found dead, (no, this isn't a spoiler because the reader knows he's dead within the first couple of chapters).
There is a major twist one doesn't see coming, although by then the reader could be pretty sure what's behind the plot.
Honestly, this was all very shallow and probably something you'd pick up at the airport just to pass the time.
In hindsight, having read and enjoyed the story, I must say that the enjoyment for the big part came from the fact that both Michael and Imogen are not very honest and likable. Yes, Imogen worked very hard to follow in her father’s footsteps and yes, she made a terrible mistake that up to a certain point could be forgivable, but she is at heart a devious person. Michael is a blown-up version of the kind of boss (or manager) lots of working people may have encountered sometime in their career. They rise up in the ranks because they appear knowledgeable and charming but in fact they have psychopathic tendencies. There is just no way you can win from people like that and it’s not worth it. Just go and find yourself a job with a nicer boss. Imogen’s husband Evan only plays a small part in this story, and there are a few others that are even more terrible than Michael, but those characters stay very flat with only a marginally explanation why they do what they do.
The fun of this book is in the fact that it is hard to stop reading because the characters are not very deep. It’s much easier than reading about real vicious people – people who maim and kill, the real psychopaths of this world.
Thanks to Netgalley for this review copy.
Imogen is desperate for a promotion. Does she want it badly enough to kill for it?
This book is all about two wholly unlikeable people who try to torment one another. Imogen’s boss is holding a huge amount of power over her and using it to torment her and hold her hostage in her job. Imogen wants her boss gone.
I thought this book was okay. A quick read, fairly short. It won’t go down as one of my favorite thrillers but was enjoyable enough to pass the time. Thanks to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for allowing me to read and review this book.

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me on the edge of my seat at times. Recommended.
I really enjoyed this book at first, and it was so promising until about 60% of the way through. The twist halfway through was great, and then it just....went off the rails for me. There was an entire thread left untouched that involved murder, and I just was not a fan of the ending whatsoever. When it comes to thrillers, I would probably not recommend this one with all the other fantastic thrillers out there.
I fell slightly let down by this book, mainly because the authors previous books are of a much higher quality. It is a good book overall though with enough suspense to keep you reading.
I'm a fan of Daniel Hurst and have loved most of his books . . . until now.
This story's plot was not only so thin as to be totally see-through, but it was boring. We've all had a crappy boss who drives us mad, and as the prologue shows, can drive some to murder. Hurst also repeated and then over-repeated points to death--yes, he sucks, we get it already--and I couldn't help feeling Mr. Hurst's intended audience was a bunch of ten-year-olds who could barely follow a plot, certainly not full functioning and competent adults.
I have read a few books by Daniel and have enjoyed them and this was no exception. A fast paced read that I read in 2 sittings with a few twists and tension that kept me reading. I enjoyed the story told from the 2 perspectives. I will definitely look to read more by this author.
A really enjoyable thriller that I read in almost one sitting, full of suspense, mystery and twists that were both u predictable and tension building
I had quite a few issues with this book. But my biggest pet peeve is the fact that the author writes as if someone said to him: Ok, so explain this to me like I'm 5. It's almost as if it's wordy for the sake of being wordy. It's repetitive and explains situations and/or reactions that are obvious to any reader with a brain. It also wasn't exactly a "thrilling" experience. I don't know, but this one didn't really work for me. It frustrated me and made me want to get it over with already.
Thanks to NetGalley for providing me an advanced e-copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Imogen is a high-flying assistant bank manager, but she has a secret and her boss knows it. It gives Michael the power to work her to the bone and to pass off most of her work as his. Imogen is desperately unhappy and just wants to be able to look after her father (the ex-manager of her bank who has Alzheimer's) Regardless of Imogen's attempts to stop Michael he always manages to wriggle out of it. There must be a way to stop him.
This was a good plot. No huge twists that the reader couldn't see coming but the story works and the writing style is good. All in all worth a read
