Everyone makes mistakes right but does that mean they deserve to be punished for the rest of their lives? Imogen has a secret on that no one else knows about not her husband, any of her friends, colleagues or her father. The only person who knows is her boss Michael and he is determined to hold this over Imogen’s head and make her working life a living hell. She can’t leave else he will reveal her secret. She can’t report him for bullying or he will reveal her secret.
Poor Imogen really is trapped until one day she’s decided she’d had enough the only way to get her Michael problem solved was to get some sort on her boss, however no matter how hard she tried Michael was always one step ahead of her and it appeared Michael did everything by the book. Imogen knew she would have to think outside the box and get something on his personal life, after a couple of days following him she had what she needed.
Just when Imogen thought her problems had been over come she was flown out to New York expecting a job promotion which would help her to pay for her fathers full time care Imogen realised that yet another boss had it in for her and he was determined to make her life even harder than Michael did. With no one to turn to and no one to help her Imogen had no idea why the CEO of the company hated her so much or how she was going to get herself out of this mess.
I loved this book it was full of blackmail and deceit with characters going down all sorts of crazy paths. Every time I thought I could see where this book was going or how something was about to be resolved another twist was thrown in. This was the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m looking forward to seeing what else he has written. Thank you to NetGalley, the author and the publisher for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an open and honest review. I’d recommend this book to anyone I read it within 24 hours it was a brilliant read!
Imogen and Michael both work for a high profile bank and become friends while working their way up the ranks until Michael gets a promotion that Imogen feels should have been hers. Imogen finds herself stuck in the second in command role with no way out because she has a secret and Michael knows about it. He blackmails her with this bit of knowledge knowing that if it leaks she will be ruined. Imogen needs to escape from Michael’s unrealistic work demands and control so she devises a plan to find out what kind of secrets Michael may have that she can use against him and make him fall from power. This fast paced psychological thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat with twists & turns. I’ll keep it simple as not to give anything away!
This was a fast-paced read, centered on Imogen, who is being blackmailed by her boss, Michael. The chapters switch back and forth between Imogen’s and Michael’s POV.
The book moved quickly with a good deal of action and short chapters. While Imogen is clearly the victim, she isn’t as innocent as she may seem and I appreciated that she was flawed as well. The book did spend a little too much time (in my opinion) with both characters’ inner monologues, which was repetitive at times, but there was also a lot of action.
The thing I didn’t love in this story was that when all was revealed, the motivation for some of the characters doing what they did just didn’t ring true for me- seemed like overly complex and extreme responses to actions that had occurred in the past. You may have to suspend your disbelief a bit.
All in all, fun read that I got through quickly. I’d recommend the book for those who like psychological thrillers and will likely read more books by this author. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a lover of thrillers this really didn’t disappoint. The back story was great, the plot was really well paced and I couldn’t put it down. I really enjoyed how we jumped between Micheal and Imogens’ narratives - the fact that this was divided up by chapters helped keep the fast pace of the book and mean that you weren’t constantly having to flick back to figure out where you were. Something which sometimes is a problem with books that either junk between characters or time line.
The Promotion is about Imogen Stone who works at a bank. She is second in charge with Michael as her boss, Michaels is charming and great to all of the employees except Imogen. No one but Imogen knows how she is struggling and being treated. Her father used to be the General Manager and is now suffering from Alzheimer's needing much care.
Two years ago Imogen made a horrible mistake which was discovered by Michael. Instead of terminating her he has black mailed her in to staying and gives her all his work with unmeetable deadlines. Imogen has had enough and tries to out maneuver Michael but fails. Michael has secrets of his own. Imogen thinks she has gotten the upper hand, along comes another twist and then another.
This was a thrill a minute read. Each twist is out done by the next. You won't be able to put this down until you have finished.
Imogen has a high position in her career and married happily with her husband-Evan. She should be happy and enjoying her life. Unfortunately that's not what happen.
Michael, her boss in her office knows her little mistake she made a couple years ago which can ruin her career. So, now she has to do everything he told her to.
But, there's a limit to how far can you bully someone before they break and when you push someone too far, things can get out of control.
I spend my time reading the first half of the story hating Michael with the way he act towards Imogen. I realize Imogen is not so innocent in this story but, I also believe she didn't deserve to how she was being treated in her office. It's like working for the devil hahaha
Then, the second half of the story was spend wondering about the other secret that suddenly came out in the story which makes this a little bit more interesting.
This is a fast paced and short story since I was able to read it in one day. The short chapters had me flipping the pages because I wanted to know what's going to happen in the end.
I like the writing style because I can really feel the pressure that Imogen has under her shoulders by facing Michael every day at work while have to take care her ailing father.
The ending was a little bit rushed and things getting wrapped up pretty quickly. Even though I feel slightly satisfied to how things turn out in the end, there are some things that I wish ended differently.
This was my first read by Daniel Hurst and I think this is a pretty good for a psychological thriller. I'm enjoying my time reading this book and if the other books by Daniel Hurst was as good as this I'll be reading more of his work :)
Thanks to Netgalley, Daniel Hurst and Inkubator Books for the digital ARC in return for an honest review.
Actual rating: 3.5⭐
The book was a really quick read, but it was not at all what I expected, unfortunately for the worse. The book was very linear and even in one of the “bigger twists” it unfortunately was very blah.
With a book heavy on extortion and blackmail, then followed by murder, the book fell very flat. There was no investigation to the murder, and unfortunately no need for twisted alibis. It seemed like following the murder, it was talked about very briefly and then just forgotten about.
If you like books that get tied up in a pretty bow without much room to wonder about the subtle mysteries, this is the book for you. Unfortunately, I’m just not that person.
I loved reading from alternate POV's from both Michael's perspective as well as Imogen's perspective. They were always trying to "one-up" one another, get the last word, get the upper hand and I LOVED it. There was so much drama, so much betrayal, deceit and lies, you never knew what was going to happen next. It made for quite an interesting read and I found myself flipping through the pages to see what would happen next.
Thank you for this eARC via NetGalley. I'm looking forward to reading more of your titles.
I received an arc copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I really enjoyed this book. Imogene is following in her father's footsteps at the bank where she is employed and trying to reach the top position which he held. Along the way, she makes a mistake and steals money in a desperate time in her life. Her boss, Michael, not only knows about the mistake but bullies her while he holds it over her head. She tries so many things to be treated fairly and not be fired or sent to prison for what she did but he wins and continues to hold it against her. Her father is in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer's. When Michael is no longer in the picture and his boss begins to treat her bad, she finds out what her father was really like as the "boss". I enjoyed the storyline, the characters and I felt that the book moved at a fast pace and kept my interest.
The plot is paper thin, there is no attention to detail whatsoever, and the author has this annoying habit of belaboring every single point to the extent that you have to wonder if he legitimately thinks his readers are intellectually inferior (or even competent).
Immersive, Enjoyably Tense Suspense….
Imogen holds a secret. One that she is determined to keep. Unfortunately for her, someone else knows it. Just how far will Imogen go to keep this secret safe? Desperation may well lead to unthinkable things in this edge of seat, immersive suspense. Nicely done with a well crafted cast of characters and engaging storyline. Suitably and enjoyably tense.
Thanks to NetGalley and inkubator books for this ARC. I had high hopes for this book. What was her secret? Why was her boss so cruel? I was disappointed that both POVs were in the first person - my least favorite writing. I also didn't like either of the main characters. I did find the story interesting, but my interest flagged the more Imogen did stupid things to try to get back at Michael. And Michael was a terrible person. I don't like to give up on books so I kept reading.
As much as I didn't really enjoy a lot of the book, the end made it all worth it to me. This was going to be a 3.5 star book, but the end made me bump it up to four.

Imogen is second in command at her father, William's, old bank. She is married to Evan, a school teacher. She should be happy with her life, right? Unfortunately Michael, her boss, has a secret about her...one that could cost her everything she holds dear....even her freedom. We are told early on what the secret is and all through the book we deal with Michael being an ass to Imogen. Imogene broke the law and Michael has the evidence to prove she has done so. It turns into quite the cat and mouse game and that ramped up the tension.
The book is told from Imogen and Michaels point of view, but not before the prologue introduces us to a dead body in the office. We don't who or how though and that is where the story begins.
I had a hard time feeling bad for Imogen, she pretty much put herself in the position she finds herself in. I know at the time she felt like she had no choice but I don't think I could have done it, I don't like the thought of losing my job and going to jail no matter how desperate a situation I find myself in, not even for a loved one. I did like that the main character is an older woman who is also looking after her father, who has alzheimer's. I know from experience that looking after a loved one with the disease is a lot to take on.
This book was short at 230 pages and I was able to read it in a single sitting. This book was tense and I couldn't wait to get to the end to see what Imogen and Michael would do next, I really wanted them both to go to jail and pay for their misdeeds, especially the way they treated each other. Michael was a pig!!! This was my first book by Daniel Hurst and if it is anything to go by I will be reading more of his work in the future.
This is my first book by Daniel Hurst and I really enjoyed it.
The storyline is crazy but enthralling. It’s fast paced and I found that I couldn’t put it down once I started it.
I’ll definitely read more by this author in future and would recommend this book.
Wow!! Crazy crazy storyline! This book had such a twisted tale! I actually felt really bad for the main female character! Lol she was a little unpleasant at times too but still I think she got the raw end of the deal there! Lol I would recommend reading this book! Its a little different but definitely worth reading! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
As with his other books Daniel Hurst has given readers an unputdownable novel. I was engrossed by Imogens story and couldn't stop reading it.
Imogen's father was General Manager in the UK branch of an international bank before having to retire early due to ill health. Reluctantly she followed in his footsteps rising to Deputy Manager. The only thing standing in her way is Michael, the Manager, who makes her work and homelife unbearable. But she cannot do anything because Micheal knows a secret about Imogen that she does not want to be revealed.
A tense thriller, with plenty of twists and turns.
Many thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review
The Promotion By Daniel Hurst ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Promotion is another twisty and dark psychological thriller from Daniel Hurst which I raced through and couldn't put down.
In her early twenties, Imogen just wanted to travel. After her initial reluctance to enter the banking profession, Imogen eventually settles into her role and rises through the ranks of the bank her father used to head.
But recently her promising career has ground to a halt and she finds herself working 24/7 just to keep her boss at bay. He is making her life hell because he is the only one who knows her secret. He's taken the promotion that should have been hers and is passing off her hard work as his own. When her father's health deteriorates even further, necessitating constant care, and her pay rise is blocked yet again, Imogen is driven to desperate actions, with unexpected consequences.
Many thanks to @NetGalley and @inkubatorbooks for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I’m a fan of Daniel Hurst and read almost all his previous books so was thrilled to get an early read of the promotion. I’d previously just read the neighbours so wanted to see if this new book was as good. Pleased to say it exceeded expectations. The story grips you from the start and keeps you hanging on till the end.
This is a rapid-paced, compelling story with masterful execution. The constant action means there is never a dull moment. Another five star rating for Daniel from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Oooh this is dark! The Promotion leafy me reading late into the night (and maybe just the morning as well!)
Yeah so a sleep deprived review from me....but it was worth it to get this book finished! One of them that doesn’t let you rest until you’ve reached the end.
Michael was a disturbing character! Another fantastic hit from Daniel Hurst.
4/5.
I absolutely love Daniel Hurst books. This book is no exception. It’s absolutely an amazing thriller about obsession that will keep the reader mesmerized.
