Thanks to Harper Perennial for the free book.
Now this is the kind of thriller I want to read. An art heist, journalist investigations, and a well thought out plot, made this a book I won't soon forget. It will be a favorite of 2022. This book is original. The prologue hooked me into the story, and I didn't want to stop until I reached the ending. The timelines were expertly woven together and it left me wanting to reading just a bit more each time - meaning I stayed up way to late a couple of nights to binge this. The character's had great depth, and I enjoyed their processes for solving this case. This book is so well written that I highly recommend it to those looking for something fresh and new in the thriller category.

This book is a masterpiece! I was hooked from the first page and could not turn the pages fast enough. There is something in this book for everyone - - art, history, mystery, romance, murder, addiction, family dynamics, plus so much more. The historical aspects are fascinating but it’s truly hard to stomach the amount of art the Nazi’s confiscated during WWII. The character development was incredible. Jules garnered my respect from the first chapter and Margaux was the ultimate villain. You will not want to miss this book!

Anytime I read about art I always wish I could see the painting in person. Barr does a great job at bringing the painting to life and explaining history in a way that was easy to follow. There were a lot fast-paced moments and some on the slower side (while we got background information), but I liked how they were blended. It kept me interested to know what would happen next. Jules was a smart, passionate character that was easy to get behind although some of her decisions frustrated me. While I wanted the villain to get what was coming, I loved being able to get inside their head. It was truly a race to find a painting, and nothing would get in their way. Full of secrets, suspense, love, and revenge, Woman on Fire is a unique story about history and the art world.

As soon as I started reading this book, which focuses on two people that want to have the same piece of art work which was taken by the Nazi Party during World War II, I knew this would become a favorite read for me.

In my world, this is the perfect read. It’s got a history mystery, rich and powerful people globetrotting, investigative journalism, and a feisty and determined main character.

The characters are fantastic, the plot is fast paced, and the history presented is fascinating. The sensitive subject of who does certain pieces of art really belong to is brought to light during this book which leads to real life dialogue.

Woman on Fire is the title of this book but also is the name of the coveted piece of artwork painted by a Jewish artist of a beautiful young woman.

The piece has been missing for over 80 years. The piece is “acquired” by an art dealer, Margaux de Laurent. She feels that since her beloved grandfather once held the piece in his art gallery, it belongs to her.

A famous shoe designer, Ellis Baum, who is dying of cancer wants the painting as well. That painting is very personal to him because of the woman who is the subject of the painting.

Ellis asks his old friend, investigative journalist, Dan Mansfield to help find this art. Dan assembles a team including young journalist, Jules Roth and Ellis’s grandson who is a recovering addict and painter, Adam Baum to not only retrace history but to also come head to head with a psychopath.

This book makes me want to go back and read The Monuments Men and watch ‘Woman in Gold’. Oh, and let me also put my plug in that this would be a fabulous movie as well!

Woman on Fire is a story of intrigue and suspense surrounding a painting from WWII-era Germany. The conflict comes when there are two individuals - ruthless gallery owner/art dealer Margaux de Laurent and iconic shoe designer Ellis Baum.

Enter the up and coming investigative reporter Jules Roth, who gets a job working for Dan Mansfield, a legendary reporter and now editor of a major newspaper. The two get involved in a personal quest to find the painting for Ellis and bring closure to his tumultuous upbringing.

This book kept my interest until the very end; it is deftly written, well-researched, and suspenseful. My main criticisms are as follows: I could not relate to Margaux at all, nor could I fully understand what drove her to her actions (which I won't detail here as to not spoil the plot). I also found it somewhat difficult to keep up with the characters and the parts they played in the story. Usually this is not a problem for me, but I found myself making mental notes as I progressed through the book. Finally, some of the story I found implausible. Perhaps this is due to my own naivete about the world of priceless art and those who are driven by power and glory.

I recommend this book to fans of books with strong female characters, suspense/thriller, and even historical fiction (which is given in small doses). Thank you to the publisher, Ms. Barr, and NetGalley for an advance reader's e-book copy!

WOW! Lisa Barr, the author of “Woman on Fire” has written an intense, intriguing, captivating, and thrilling novel. The genres for this novel are Historical Fiction, World War Two, Mystery and Thriller, and Fiction. The author describes her dramatic characters as complex and complicated. Some are courageous and bold, others are flawed, and have weaknesses. Some are quirky, dysfunctional, and psychotic.

The author takes us into the world of Art. During World War Two, different masterpieces were “taken” by the Gestapo from Jewish families. There was theft, betrayals, danger, and adventure. These precious artistic treasures were valuable to families and held certain memories. They were valuable to many people for wealth and power.

A young courageous journalist becomes entangled and interested in researching the past and present to find the art and the people that were/are involved. There is also a wealthy gallerist, who feels that it is her familial right to be entitled to certain art pieces. On this journey, there is danger, betrayals, lies, threats, and murder. There are twists and turns.

I loved everything about this book and highly recommend this thought-provoking and memorable thriller for other readers.

I loved this one! Gripping. A propulsive page-turner that takes the reader into the mysterious and perilous world of stolen art.

The lead character, Jules Roth, is an ambitious, passionate, well-meaning journalist. She talks her way into a role with Dan Mansfield, a famous investigative journalist who puts her on the case of retrieving Woman on Fire, a painting with a depth of history–and many people who claim rightful ownership, and may kill to retrieve it.

From there the novel is pulse pounding and nonstop, but also filled with engaging characters I cared deeply about as a reader. From Dan, to Jules' mom, to even the well-formed antagonist, Margaux de Laurent.

The novel tackles the length journalists will go to unearth the truth and the risks they will take to right a wrong.

I particularly loved what I learned about the world of stolen art. A peek into a secret universe into which few are initiated.

Woman on Fire is full of rich characters, heartbreaking history, and insights into the world of stolen art. Five big can’t-put-it-down stars from me!

Cinematic fast paced thriller telling the story of a stellar piece of art "Woman on Fire." Ambitious Jules talks her way onto the journalist team of Dan Mansfield who sends her on a mission to locate "Woman on Fire." He's promised to help his friend, octogenarian famous shoe designer, Ellis Baum, find the painting that Ellis last saw being carted out of his home in Germany by the Nazi's.. His mother was the "Woman on Fire." Of course there is also the evil art dealer who has the painting and the recovering addict artist who helps Jules. Sure to please thriller readers, WWII readers, romance readers, plot driven readers, and just about anyone looking for an absorbing escape.

I devoured this book in three days. The fast pace, the commitment to the pursuit of truth by the protagonists balancing out the insane actions by the antagonists kept me flipping page after page in my kindle for this early version of this book. I loved the characters, was fascinated by the lengths art lovers will go to preserve artifacts under unfathomable conditions, and despised the bad guys. If you like thriller paced action and a journalistic quest for integrity set in an outrageously expensive art world, this is a book you want in your hands!

Online synopsis: "From the author of the award-winning Fugitive Colors and The Unbreakables, a gripping tale of a young, ambitious journalist embroiled in an international art scandal centered around a Nazi-looted masterpiece—forcing the ultimate showdown between passion and possession, lovers and liars, history and truth...A thrilling tale of secrets, love, and sacrifice that illuminates the destructive cruelty of war and greed and the triumphant power of beauty and love, Woman on Fire tells the story of a remarkable woman and an exquisite work of art that burns bright, moving through hands, hearts, and history."

Jules is so excited to start working with Dan on his investigations after basically forcing him to hire her. Dan has side project he wants her help on. They are trying to track down Woman On Fire, the last known painting by Ernst Engel that had been stolen by the Nazis and has since disappeared. Only problem is, Margeux de Laurent is also looking for it, and will stop at nothing to be the one who owns the painting in the end.

I just love looks about art! Art forging, missing famous works, the rich folks that want to own the missing works, I just adore it all. This book was no exception! I loved Jules work ethic and how far she was willing to go to get the story and find the work. Meanwhile you also had to love/hate Margaux and her insanely narcissistic personality. I still find it so sad that so many amazing works of art were stolen by the Nazis and many still have never made their way back to their original owners/family members, if they are still alive. I’ve been a bit burnt out on WWII stories recently, but I liked that this one the war wasn’t the main focus of the book.

This novel is a gripping and fast paced story of art theft in the modern world. A combination of thriller and historical fiction, this novel tells the story of a young investigative journalist who is pulled into the story of a lifetime. Jules Roth is brought into the covert and dangerous search for a specific piece of art, Woman on Fire. This piece was seized by the Nazis, and has been hidden ever since. Every corner of the art world is brought under Lisa Barr's microscope, unfolding a complex web of deceit. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in this specific facet of historical fiction, as well as those looking for an informative, well written, and engrossing thriller that goes beyond the typical "who dun it?".

Woman on Fire hooked me from the start and I had a very hard time putting the book down so I could go to sleep! As someone who loves art, I was immediately drawn to the book for that reason, but was met with so much more once I started reading. The book, a mix between a thriller and historical fiction, takes readers on a journey throughout the United States and Europe on the hunt for art stolen by the Nazis.

With a number of characters and locations, I thought it might get confusing who was who, but the way Lisa Barr wrote this book, it was very easy to follow, and the story flowed easily from each location and different perspective. I loved how the action never let up in the book and that throughout it, secrets are uncovered that effect all of the characters. Barr wrote such incredibly strong characters, and even as the villian, Margaux was so layered, and I was incredibly intrigued by her.

Woman on Fire is such a powerful story, and you can tell that Barr did her research for this book. This book will keep you guessing, it will shock you at times, and also leave you heartbroken, but I cannot recommend it enough!
