Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me a review copy of Autumnal in exchange for an honest review.
Autumnal is an ode to all mothers. It explores what it means to be a mother and what mothers have to sacrifice for their children.
It was not only visually appealing - with a hauntingly amazing art, but it was brilliantly written - the dialogues, the story... everything was just perfect.
When it comes to the art style, I'm still in awe. I can stare at it for days. Yes, some of it was creepy - nonetheless, it was beautiful. Like most people, I'm a sucker for beautiful, scenic art.
The writing touched my heart. It was simple, poetic and scary. The dialogues were incredibly realistic and the characters were memorable. Kat, the main character was very well-rounded, as well as her daughter Sybil. Their relationship dynamic was adorable - quite realistic and endearing. At first glance, Kat isn't the perfect mother. She went to pick her daughter up from school with a black eye. She used to have a drinking problem. She has an estranged mother that abandoned her. But she tries to be everything that her mother wasn't. She's there for Sybil and has no help from anyone. She's a single mom trying her best.
The story will probably stick with me forever. It left a huge impression on me and I'm not going to lie, it also disturbed me. Scary and sad...
A real thriller with more than just hints of horror.
The ending broke my heart into million pieces. I didn't expect the story to go the way it did. But wow, I'm sure glad that it did. The more tragic the better.
Perhaps the reason why this story left a huge impression on me is that it reminds me so much of Silent Hill (the video-games). It has similar tropes and it explores similar themes. I can't go into more detail without spoiling the plot. But yes, just like Silent Hills mothers and mother-child relationships take the center stage in Autumnal. Without spoiling anything, I'd like to say that Autumnal reminds me of Silent Hill Homecoming most of all. Of you've played the game and you decide to read this graphic novel, you'll see why. Or If you are a fan of Autumnal, you should give Silent Hill a go.
