It took me about half the book to get into the story. I didn't like any of the characters up until then. Then I slowly started to like Gavin and molly. It was a cute story, but there wasn't really much substance to it for me.
I want to thank Netgalley and the author for gifting me the ebook. I was able to find the audio version through my local library.
The story was okay. If you are looking for a quick romance you will like this one.
"There's Something About Molly" by Christina Hovland is a lighthearted and charming story that will make you smile with its humor and endearing characters, offering a delightful reading experience.
Wow I'm just stunned with how good this title was. I just had so much fun reading this title and getting to along for the ride with these amazing characters. I'm so excited to see what's next from this author.
I did not realize that this book was part of a series but that was fine. This book pretty much functions as a stand alone.
This book is chock full of tropes, fake dating, enemies to lovers, and off limits relationship, being the main ones but it still feels fresh because those are usually not combined with single motherhood and/or "older" characters. That being said, I didn't love Molly as a protagonist and I didn't love the set up of needing a boyfriend to win a matchmaking competition.
This is a cute fun romcom that keeps you entertain from start to finish. I found both protagonist to be likable, and I read it for them throughout the book. All in all it was a fun quick read, and I would highly recommend.
There is something about this series from Christina Hovland. I enjoyed all of this book and the others. These are more experienced people and mothers trying to deal. Like it a lot. I will try to find more of her books.
Usually I *love* a love-hate but something about this one didn't quite hit right for me. Molly just kept focusing on how she was supposed to hate Gavin but the evidence for why was lacking and her resistance to growing dragged on a bit longer than I would've liked. That said, Gavin is awesome. He's actually working. on himself (which kind of also shows how Molly maybe isn't), which is rare to see in a romcom. I want both to be happy but honestly if these were real life people I'd be questioning if they were well suited?
This is the second book in the Mommy Wars series. This series just keeps getting better and better. I loved this book! This group of mommy’s is so messy, and full of drama. I can’t wait to read the next one!
I like Molly and I liked the premise of the story. I liked how Gavin helped her realize that she has value beyond what she can do for others. I think where it fell flat for me was that I just don’t feel like Gavin has any personality at all. He was a ball of contradictions in the first book (I don’t care if you’re not the right match for your partner, a deadbeat dad is a deadbeat dad) but in this book I feel like he didn’t get much character development at all and that prevented me from really feeling the love between them. I could’ve done with less repetition of Molly’s insecurities and more focus on Gavin, as well as maybe another scene or two of Agnes’s love story.
I just couldn’t get into this book and I tried several times. I am sure it’s a case of me just not being in the mood for contemporary romance. I can tell you the writing flowed easily and the characters really tried to capture my attention - alas it just wasn’t meant to be.
Thank you for the opportunity to read and review 🦄
An easy read that you don’t have too think too much into or concentrate too hard. Easy to follow and a feel good story.
I just didn't feel this one. I didn't love Molly.... I don't know why, it just isn't my cup of tea.
Just 2.5 stars
Overall it was a good read. I struggled with not enjoying or identifying with Molly... but I tried not to let that overshadow the story or the great writing!
I had a hard time keeping focused while I listened to it, mostly because I wasn’t a big fan of Molly. I did love Gavin and Agnes and the kids tho.
I received a digital ARC from NetGalley and Entangled Publishing in exchange for an honest review. Molly Princeton is an expert at dating, well, at other people dating. She has a popular vlog about dating, but she's been single for 8 years, since her husband and son's father decided the family life wasn't for him and left. She is fine being alone, self-sufficient. And she also is cursed. She never makes it past the first date because she inevitably sets up her date with the love of his life. But suddenly, her best friend's ex, the man she has loathed for years, saves her son from an ill-fated stunt on the lake and doesn't seem so awful anymore. Gavin Frank is on a relationship diet. He is taking a break. For years he was the man who couldn't be alone, but heard someone say, "before a person is ready to commit, they should be comfortable being alone." So, he is trying the single life. But when unexpected circumstances put him in close proximity to his ex-wife's best friend, he has trouble ignoring the attraction. Both are unsure if this is a road they should go down, but unable to turn away from the sparks flying. Will they take a chance? Can Molly break her curse? Is Gavin ready to be in a committed relationship?
I haven't read many books featuring single parents, especially single moms. This book portrayed "mom life", especially single mom life, so authentically I felt it was written for me, or women life me. Molly is a hot mess, but in the best possible way. She is working towards big goals and has built a good life for her and her son, without anyone else. I can completely relate to being self-sufficient, and how important it is to do those things for your kid and for yourself on your own. And I appreciated how Gavin was written, as a flawed man who yes, had messed up, at times in big ways, but had grown as a parent and as a person. It can be so easy as a parent to get lost in your kid's life, in their needs, and put your needs aside for a bit. It was good to see Molly's chosen family rally around her and push her, gently, toward taking care of herself for once. I loved this book and could not put it down. I am so excited to read the rest of the stories in this series! I would recommend this book to single parents, fans of enemies to lovers, and it is on the border between closed and open door romance.
I greatly enjoyed Mommy Wars book #1 which was about Rachel. It was hard not to have high expectations for Molly's book. Although there were plenty of entertaining moments in this novel, it fell somewhat flat for me in execution. One: Molly was such a riot in book #1 that I felt her personality had flipped in her own narrative. It bugged me how she persistently put herself second in every situation. Girl, TAKE THAT HAPPINESS please. Second: Gavin was not a favourite character of mine in book #1. At least he was a lot more swoonier this book and actively doing his best to be more present for his twin boys.*cue heart eyes*. Third: Why is there a dog on the cover but not in the book?? I am sad.
Thanks to #NetGalley for the ARC of #TheresSomethingAboutMolly
I wish this book could have decided what it wanted to be, I didn't buy the whole enemies to lovers thing, Molly was basically trying to convince herself she hated Gavin for way too long. Maybe I just didn't connect with Molly and liked Gavin more but that was definitely an annoyance to me. Overall it was a fine rom-com book that was a fun read. Just nothing earth-shattering! Hovland continues to do a great job with character development and continuing the series.
I love this story!! This book takes up where Rachel Out of Office leaves off but is still a standalone. Rachel's best friend Molly and her ex-husband Gavin decide to fake date for a contest Molly has entered. While fake dating they develop feelings for each other and a hea eventually results with lots of bumps along the way.
While Gavin and Molly's story is great, Christina Hovland is amazing at developing the supporting characters. The landlady/next door neighbor/friend Agnes is a hoot and probably deserves her own story. Add into this Molly's son Ollie and Gavin's boys Kellen and Brady and Gavin's mother Evelyn and I feel like I know the entire family. These characters are so well developed, I feel like I could join them in the park (or at the next wedding) and fit right in. I want to be part of this group of Moms!!
I was granted a free copy of this text by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a book that had a lot of potential in the premise, but much depth is missing. Hovland should definitely fine-tune this one prior to publication.
