I enjoyed this book, it’s the second book in the Mommy Wars series, but I think it could be read as a standalone. The characters were great, and the book was flirty and funny.
Molly is a single mom who works as a dating coach and records a podcast. Her best friend Rachel was married to a guy named Gavin, and they had 2 kids but divorced because they didn’t really love each other.
Molly enters a contest to win enough money to send her son to camp, fix her car, and maybe some leftover to save. The idea is to match up a couple, send them on dates, then interview them afterwards. The matchmaker with the most public votes, and who’s couple remains together, wins. Molly sets up her landlady and another tenant, and they’re getting along famously. She’s up against a matchmaking couple and they’re beating her., so she decides she needs a fake boyfriend, fast.
Molly knows Gavin and doesn’t really like him, but after talking to him and seeing him with his sons, she starts to change her opinion. Gavin agrees to be her fake boyfriend, and they start spending time together.
How will Molly and Gavin work out their differences and get their HEA? This is a fun take on “enemies to lovers” and I recommend it. 4 stars.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
4 stars overall but Molly pulled me away from the story.
So Gavin was a solid 4.5 stars, but Molly's waffling on everything drove me INSANE and pulled me out of the story too much.
If you read the previous book - Gavin doesn't come across as a great guy, but we learn more about him and his motivations which makes him more endearing. I totally get the push/pull of being attracted to your best friend's ex...but seriously, Rachel and Gavin's previous relationship had lots of reasons it failed and none of them had to do with any broken hearts.
Molly being unable to commit and the whole first date setting people up thing went from quirky to annoying. And so many wrong assumptions...GAH!
That being said. This is an entertaining story overall. Gavin and the boys will give you hilarious laughs and eventually Molly gets it all together. Just wished it had happened sooner.
This book will make you laugh and can be read on its own.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
There really is something about Molly. I truly enjoyed this book. I love how Molly is a caretaker for all, and learns how to not forget about herself. Gavin, the hero, redeems himself as well. Both protagonists are well developed throughout the arc of the story. You just want to root for them so much.
All opinions and thoughts are my own. I received this book via an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
What's the difference between destiny, fate, plain old bad luck and possibly a curse?
Aren't they all a little bit the same?
Molly is great at giving relationship advice and matchmaking. For everyone but herself. She has kind of a running streak of having a first date but setting him up with someone else either on that date or shortly after. Is she a master love fortune teller or is she a self-saboteur? A little bit of both? When Molly starts having feelings for her best friend's ex-husband, she definitely becomes the latter. She hates Gavin. Really hates him. He dumped her best friend, after all. Isn't she still supposed to hate him? These butterfly feelings in her stomach when he's around should definitely not be happening. Right?
But those feelings aren't just one-sided. Now how is that going to work?!
This book was a lot of fun and had so many funny and sweet moments.
Great read!
Christina Hovland does it again! Thanks NetGalley for the copy of the book.
This book was funny, relatable and warm. Single mom, Molly takes us for a ride as she unexpectedly finds her happily ever after. Torn between staying true to her best friend and her feelings that develop for her best friend’s ex, Molly sets out to win a contest but needs help from the unexpected. Her goal was to win money to help her achieve her goals for her and her son but comes away work a lot more.
I love the support Molly’s given throughout the entire book by those who love her. I enjoyed the story of two people, with young children from previous relationships, whose kids didn’t hate each other and the struggles of being single parents wanting to find someone for themselves. I can’t relate to Molly but know there are lots of people who will be able to.
3.5 Stars
Molly Princeton makes no secret of how much she loathes her best friend's ex, Gavin Frank. But now that Molly's friend has found true love, and a happy dynamic with her ex, Gavin's shortcomings are suddenly starting to seem almost... non-existent...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There's Something About Molly was a super slow burn, closed door romance, featuring a quirky heroine, and her journey to finding the HEA she truly deserves. A relationship between Molly and Gavin seems impossible on paper... he's her best friends-ex... and she wants absolutely nothing to do with him... or so she keeps telling herself...
Molly was the most amazing character! Her desire to make other people happy was a consistent theme in this book, and while her selfless and giving personality was admirable, Molly fails to realize that she just might be sabotaging her own happiness in the process...
Gavin may have made some mistakes in his relationship with his ex, but at this point in his journey, he has made his amends, figured out co-parenting, and whole-heartedly supported her in her new relationship. And while his attraction to Molly may be inconvenient at best, he can't help but realize that she is the only women he wants to pursue... ever again...
I really enjoyed this read! I loved the dynamic shown between all of the characters, no matter how complicated their pasts were, they all displayed some impressive adult growth where they needed it most. Molly and Gavin's relationship was unique and fun, and fit both of their personalities absolutely perfectly!
I received a complimentary copy of this book for my honest and unbiased review.
Like the previous book in the series, "There's Something About Molly" was rather an unconventional romance, but satisfying nonetheless. Single mom Molly Princeton had never been a fan of her best friend Rachel's ex-husband, Gavin Frank. After all, she'd had a front row seat to his behavior towards Rachel and their twin sons, Kellan and Brady, over the years. Fresh off a failed engagement, however, Gavin was focused on being a better father and getting to know himself outside of a relationship. His genuine efforts to step up his parenting game were really sweet; unfortunately, every time he started to think he had a handle on things, the boys did something to make him realize just how unprepared he was. Most of the situations were laughable, especially because they really weren't Gavin's fault. (Honestly, who could predict that their child is going to put a Skittle up their nose?) He was lucky to have Molly there to bail him out on several occasions.
After getting to know him a bit in the last book of the series, the Gavin we met in this book was not what I expected, in a good way. I loved that he saw Molly for who she really was and pushed her to be kinder to herself. She needed to build herself up as much as she tried to build up everyone around her. She was fiercely independent and fought her feelings for Gavin valiantly, but he managed to win her over in the end. They were both incredibly likeable and relatable characters, and it was easy for me to cheer them on to their HEA. Gavin attempting to learn the nuances of emojis so that he could text with Molly was particularly relatable (and hilarious) for me. I have a tough time keeping up with the secret meanings behind most of them myself!
Overall, I adored "There's Something About Molly" and highly recommend it for all fans of contemporary romance and romantic comedy. I can't wait for the next book in the series.
There is a fine line of nailing humor and overall Christina Hovland has managed it well. All of the books from past series I have read have been fun, engaging, and worth my time.
With There's Something About Molly, we have a woman who is terrific at matching up others together but not exactly for herself. Our fella has a history of not always being a stand-up guy and doing the right thing. He has been working towards doing better and is almost there.
These two come together with a fake relationship born out of need; his to get his mom off his back with arranging dates. She needs a partner for a contest she is entering. She thinks this is perfect because she has NO INTEREST in this fella.
Right, and let me sell you the Brooklyn Bridge for half price. Cute, fun, and our fella learns how to be a good guy.
There's something about Molly by Christina Hovland is a sweet and funny romance read. This book has frenemies-to-fake-dating-to-real-dating vibe.
Being a single mother and full time working with a preteen son is already starting to overwhelm Molly when unexpected turns of events leads Molly to participate in a matchmaking competition. Reluctant at first but surrendering to the needs, Molly enters the competition. In order to secure and stay at the top position, she needs to up her game.
And it seems like only her best-friend's ex Gavin Frank can help her get there.
Gavin is already tired of her mother meddling in his love life and he want to very much stay on the relationship diet he has himself on. So, Gavin agrees readily when Molly asks him to be his fake Boyfriend.
But can they deny their real chemistry and sparks that has already been there in their fake dating?
Male MC (Gavin): 4/5 Stars
Female MC (Molly): 3/5 Stars
- I loved how Author has shaded new light and Perspective on Gavin, his journey of being true to himself and getting after what he wanted, how much he has improved. I liked Molly, her cheery persona as well as the off-camera Molly; however, she kept too tight hold onto her opinion of bad Gavin persona.
- I felt that the story lacked on and off camera banter between Molly and Gavin. I also would have liked it more if there was more character development for Molly, for overcoming her insecurities, letting go off grudges etc.
-I loved all the Kids, Kellen, Brady and Ollie. The friendships & Of course, Agnes & Charlie too. The understanding between Rachel and Gavin. The writing flows, but I would've appreciated a lit bit of more fake dating/real feelings. But Overall, a pleasant read!
I loved this story so much! Absolutely laugh out loud hilarious while all the feels for the budding romance. And the kiddos! So many kid funnies with skittles and quarters in all the wrong places and always at the most inconvenient times. Kind of an “enemies to lovers” meets “faked relationship” troupe.
Molly is an online “dating advice” influencer and a reluctant matchmaker thru all her advice – and not a lot of her own actual experience in the dating pool. She always ends up setting up her new beau with someone she deems “better for him than her.” She is single mom of one darling 8-year-old Ollie. Our story starts out at Molly’s BFF’s wedding, and she ends up spending time with her BFF’s ex-husband, Gavin. She is NOT fond of him (even though he is super hot) because he wasn’t the best father figure after the divorce of her BFF Rachel. Oh, by the way, Rachel is marrying her ex-husband’s brother. Talk about complicated!
Gavin was my favorite surprise in this romcom. Hey, you are supposed to hate the big, bad ex-husband that was an absent dad in the past! Right from the first meet cute at the wedding, our author has written Gavin’s current relationship with his ex-wife as a very healthy co-parenting friend. In fact, he was in charge of their rowdy twin boys (and Molly’s Ollie) during the wedding and the duration of their honeymoon. He is also a fan of Molly’s online persona, having watched all her dating videos and taking her advice.
Forced proximity (kids playdates while Mom is on honeymoon) finds Molly and Gavin moving into a “fake dating” relationship. Enter Agnes, Molly’s spunky elderly neighbor. She is looking for a hook-up and engages Molly in her scheme. Which ultimately leads to the Molly and Gavin show. Literally an online matchmaking contest where these two yuck it up for more likes and a grand prize.
There’s Something About Molly is such a refreshing read as there are so many relatable situations and so many funny internal dialogs. POV from both Molly and Gavin is my absolute favorite as you get to know Gavin’s innocent motivations in getting to know Molly. He’s not the monster she is intent on avoiding. This story is the second book in Hovland’s Mommy Wars series. It was such a fun read that I initially had no idea it was even part of a series – it’s that good as a standalone.
I like this series by Christina Hovland and after reading the Rachel novel and the April one, I was curious to find out about the Molly and Gavin.
Molly is a dating coach. She’s good at it even though she is single. So when a contest requires her to find a partner, even if he’s not real, she figures Gavin might be perfect for the role. And the best part? They don’t like each other, so there’s no chance of falling in love! But when feelings get involved, everything goes to hell.
The novel was nice, even if it’s the novel I liked the least so far. It’s hard to really like Molly because no matter what Gavin does, she still manages to be mean to him. That aside, I was glad to get into another novel by the author and I’m curious to find out what the next one is!
Great! I liked this better than April for sure. Not quite as good as the Mile High gang but really enjoyed!
Smart and sexy, There’s Something About Molly has the right mix of humor, drama, strange relationships and delicious bedroom scenes. Not one to be missed by lovers of a pseudo enemy to friends romance
So much fun! And something I so much needed in my life! This series is a blast, especially since I can totally relate. Molly is fun, a loving mom, doing the best she can on her own, with her bestie and circle of friends by her side. What she didn’t expect was Gavin. Gavin, who is Rachel’s ex-husband, current brother in law, and father to her son’s best friends. She’s disliked (intensely) him for years (mostly on Rachel’s behalf), but since seeing another side of him at Rachel & Travis’ wedding, she can’t seem to get him off her mind. And what’s she supposed to do with that? I truly loved how this evolved between them. And I definitely loved seeing this side of Gavin. Who’d a thunk it? Can’t wait for more of this series!
There's Something About Molly is the first book that I've read by Christina Hovland and I really enjoyed it way more than I have expected. It was a pretty cute and amusing read for me. If you're in the mood for a rom com, then I highly recommend you guys to try out this one.
This is the second installment of Ms. Hovland's delightful Mommy Wars series. She definitely knows how to do a good romcom! These books are just so wonderful, it is highly unlikely you will not fall in love with them. If you are a fan of Ms. Hovland's (which I am!) then you have probably read Rachel Out of Office. This one pretty much picks up where that left off, but even if you haven't read that ( I highly suggest you do!) this can still be enjoyed as a standalone. This is a cute enemies to lovers story between Rachel's best Molly and Gavin. They have great chemistry and their conversations will definitely have you laughing out loud. I enjoyed seeing their relationship grow and evolve, and these two were truly great together. Another homerun for Ms. Hovland! Loved the book and would definitely recommend!
Thank you NetGalley, Christina Hovland and Entangled Publishing for the copy of There’s Something About Molly. This is my personal review.
This was a book that I read and partially enjoyed. It was a group of people who have a bit of everything going for them and it does come across in the story, but I just could not connect with them. There just was just too much going on for me to get vested in anyone.
I read this book after finishing April May Fall and discovering I am not the target audience and therefore I did not enjoy it as someone who is maybe older or in a different stage of life than me would have. I decided to give this one a shot but shortly came to the conclusion that it is the same eh-ness to me as the other. I’ll give it the same rating I gave the first because I’m sure it is of the same quality, even though I didn’t finish it. 3/5
This was so good!! I really liked it. I felt weird at first with the hero being kind of a villain in the first book and being the main character in this one, but it was great. I loved the kids too so much. They were so cute.
3.5/5 stars!
This book took me a while to read. The beginning was a bit slow for me so it took me a while to get into it, but once it picked up, I really enjoyed it. The banter between Molly and Gavin, their little emoji inside jokes, the heat between the two of them on the web show… it was all so great!
I’ll admit, though, Molly did get on my nerves… especially towards the end 😞 like, BE HAPPY FOR YOURSELF PLEASE! But I love how it ended 💗 Can I have a Gavin too, please?
