Helping your child fight anxiety can be distressing for both parent and child. This book is a tool for both parent and their children to know the triggers and how to fight them. I found this book very helpful and useful. It helps diffuse situations and a great read for children to see that they are not alone.
A special thank you to Zeitgeist and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review
So glad I found this book! Such a great book for kids who deal with big feelings. Cannot wait to recommend this to my patients!
A very cute idea to share with young children. Everyone can benefit from this. Harley has many lessons to teach us all.
It’s rare you see anxiety represented in children’s books. But it’s important to note that while children are very young, it’s not optional for them to choose if they get anxiety and when they get it. I find it really beautiful with very young children in my family, that authors are willing to explore these type of topics in books since it’s rarely represented. I do love it when children’s books give a comforting direct confrontation with these things it’s valuable to children of all ages and I adore it I really do. Which is why I say it’s always a delight to read in children’s books because what other way to show children it’s ok to have these things then reading about a hedgehog who deals with the same stuff? I loved this I really did and this was absolutely a 5 out of 5 stars read!
Anxiety hits children in different ways and modes. This is a workbook that helps deal with emotions, specifically anxiety, worries and fears. We learn about triggers and healthy thinkings.
The beginning of the book has a disclaimer; it suggests you consult a physician or mental health professional before doing the exercises.
This is a cute workbook for anxiety. The author does a great job of simplifying this to a child's level. There is a lot of great information in here and some helpful tips for parents. My 8 year old has been in therapy for a year for his anxiety and honestly, this pretty much covers everything he's currently learned. There were a few things he potentially could use but I think if your child has been in therapy for anxiety, they've probably been taught most of this. I'm wavering between best ages for this workbook. My 8 year old would probably find parts of this super young for him and then other parts too old for him to read and understand. It's not bad at all, but not anything too different than what's currently out there.

When Harley Has Anxiety is an indepth workbook that a school aged child can do independently and with help. The illustrations present reletable situations. The thoughts, behavior, and body feeling triangle help children and parents understand how anxiety builds up. Anxiety is not completely internal. It's alarming how many adults function with some form of anxiety. Overall, the book would be a useful tool for therapist and/or parents that suspect their child may have anxiety.
I received this book for free for an honest review from netgalley #netgelley
This book has really helped my 8-year-old son with autism thank you so much for writing it.
I am so hapoy books like these exist for kids now. I think it could help a lot of kids identity their struggles rather than suffering until they finally get diagnosed. How many kids will read this and feel a huge weight fall off of them as they realize what they feel is okay? I think its best to learn how to cope at a young age and this book could help so many kids!
I was recently diagnosticated with anxiety and even though I kinda knew it for a while, it is still something new for me. And because my anxiety makes me pretty scared of trying new things or getting into big projects/tasks, I decided to start with a book that explains anxiety to children. I do not remember having books like these when I was a child, I did not even know at that time that anxiety exists.
There is a part that I really enjoyed in this book, where the author said that anxiety tells us that something is dangerous, but it is not always right. And the fun fact is that emotions were compared to a smoke alarm because they sometimes go for a tiny reason (e.g. you are cooking with a little bit of wine).
Really enjoyed this book! 5 stars!
This is a great book for children who may experience anxiety and a great resource for their caregivers on how to help children recognize and help with their big emotions. It is written simply so that younger elementary age children can understand the questions.
This book will help children name their feelings, identify things that may trigger anxiety as well as how to cope in different and handle their anxiety and stress. There are plenty of interactive activities to keep kids interested in the book.
There is a lot of useful info this book and I would recommend it to teachers, parents, grandparents and other care givers.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for an honest review.
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I love that it tackles such a huge thing and gives you the tools how to handle it. Not only that, but they are done in a way that children will find it fun instead of just more homework. The best way to help with mental health issues is to start dealing with them as soon as possible. I think even if your child isn't overly anxious, this is a helpful book for them. Give them the tools to handle future stress.
Thank you NetGalley and Z Kids for a copy of "When Harley Has Anxiety" in exchange for my honest review.
This book is very timely and has fun CBT activities to help children overcome worries and fears. There is the adorable hedgehog that leads the children through the different activities in the book. Parents and caregivers can help children change their thoughts and behaviours and learn how to respond differently to stressors. There are many activities and coping strategies in the book. Parents can set aside a special time each week when they can spend time together and work through the activities.
Children will learn that emotions are normal, no right & wrong, reasons, and emotions can't hurt you.
There are many places where children can write or draw about their emotions. Chances to discuss their worries, figure out how to deal with them. Children and their parents can draw up a coping plan. There is an appendix for parents, signs & symptoms of anxiety to look out for. Strategies for parents. There are also resources - books and websites.
The graphics in this book are so beyond aesthetically pleasing. Could not praise the art more!
I LOVE THAT THIS BOOK DISCUSSES ANXIETY. Yes that all needed to be capitalized. I wish this had been a book available to me at a young age. Growing up I never realized that I was anxious, I was told that I just needed to "suck it up". This book removes itself from the stigma and divulges into mental health awareness.
As the book says, EMOTIONS ARE NORMAL! It is okay to not feel 100%, it is okay to cry.
This book is great for interaction with your child. To make it fun but to also see what is going on in that unknown abyss that we call the child's mental faculties. It is therapeutic to write down and journal what you are thinking with the guidance of fun cartoons.
I would highly recommend!
✔️ Informative
✔️ Educational
✔️ Fun and engaging
✔️ A need and a must have
The book gives a proper and relevant explanation apt for the reading age group regarding the meaning of anxiety and what lies behind it.
I find the approach not overwhelming (as I tend to find with such books, meant for kids or not).
It deals with emotions, how it's a natural feeling and how we can approach such different emotions.
I find the activities quite simple and easy to perform. And as expected, it's quite calming to do them with a child this age.
Not only this exercise book serves as informative and practical, it also serves as a personal journal.
I find the flowcharts really impressive. They are detailed but not tidious.
This book can even help the mentor or the guardian reading alongwith.
Such a helpful book on anxiety.
Thank you, author/artist and the publisher, for the advance reading copy.
As a parent and a clinician reviewer, Dr. Galanti does a nice job simplifying emotional terms and coping skills in a manner children will really be able to grasp.
I enjoyed the “fire alarm” explanations and explaining the importance of self care to the younger generation.
The activities were also easy and functional for parents to apply with their children. A great supplemental tool parents can use.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
The pictures are cute and age appropriate. The activities are engaging and meaningful for a child going through therapy. I can see where this would be useful.
It is cheerful, bright, and silly. Which could either be appropriate or inappropriate based on the source of the anxiety and that would be up to the therapist to determine.
This is a lovely book which helps children with anxiety and talks about what anxiety is and it’s very active book . There are tasks in book that children can do which will help them. The illustrations are beautiful. This really easy book to follow and it has introduction for parents snd children about the book and anxiety.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read this book.
Worry is never a pleasant feeling. It may be especially difficult for kids because they may not know the strategies that adults rely upon to become calm(er). This book with chapter titles like Helping Your Anxiety, Being the Boss of Your Mind and Body and Learning to Be Brave is sure to help. The hope is that kids will develop a toolbox filled with ways to cope.
This title begins with two introductions. One is for adults and the other for kids. The author lets adults know that this book uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as its method. It is suggested that adults give children multiple practices with each technique to see which ones work best and to not give up on any one too soon.
The introduction written to kids lets them know that Dr. Galanti will help them to manage their worries. Practice is recommended and hope is offered that worries will lessen as kids learn ways to cope. Children are also offered the company of the cute Harley the Hedgehog on their journey.
In the early part of this book, children are helped to name and recognize emotions. There are activities that make this process unintimidating.
All in all, I think that this book is a helpful resource. It can be used by a child with parents, caregivers, a therapist or school personnel.
As someone who was an anxious child for a time, I would have welcomed a resource like this one.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher . All opinions are my own.
