Thank you Net Galley for an ARC of High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners. When I think of a beginner book, I think of easy recipes. I thought these recipes were a tad time excessive because each recipe has an ingredient that is a recipe. Not for me. But if I had a chef. That would be another story. Recipes do look good though.
I think this was organized beautifully, especially for those who need that structure to toss out the old and take in the new. I’d say this book has a lot of good knowledge but not to the point where it’s overbearing. Definitely a good starter book for those out there who might be struggling to make the change outright.
I received this e-book free for a genuine review.
High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners is a great book to dive into for beginners and old hats at WFPB eating. It includes a very nice 4-week plan that covers everything from menus, to shopping lists, and how to prep ahead for each week. The author has made the book easy to read, but chock full of great information about not only this way of eating, but also focusing on a high protein path within the diet.
The recipes are clearly written and the included pictures are quite lovely. I eat with my eyes first and while I always wish cookbooks had more pictures and this is no exception, I found several recipes I would like to try just based on the picture alone.
A couple of things that this cookbook did really well for me was including two indexes one for recipes and one for ingredients making the book easy to search. It also included a nice but simple list of common substitutions, and my favorite part was the short list of fast food. If you are looking for some quick ideas that don't involve a drive-through when you are in a pinch Maya has you covered.
Over all a great cookbook to add to your plant-based collection.
Thank you NetGalley and Zeitgeist for accepting my request to read and review High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners.

Did you know it's one or the other? I saw plant based and thought yum? Well for you perhaps, however, not me. I am a high protein low carbohydrate eater. There is a huge difference (Saw it with my own eyes here.). This beginners book gives the carb count on all its recipes. I can look, but not touch.
The author played as a child "Which herb is this?" She was taught from an early age how to plant and the purposes of herbs and the need for vegetables. This book is written to share her knowledge. She found out upon leaving the safety of her parents what happens without thinking or planning meals.
The book does not overload the reader with details. Howard explains the need for cleaning out your pantry, and not throwing away but donating unopened food that doesn't support this lifestyle. Making a grocery list could not be any easier. She includes the list and serving size allowed. The four week menu plan is readable. Howard writes most ingredients are easily found; however, some will need to be ordered online. This leads into her expressing the need for planning a week in advance. She likewise encourages the use of leftovers. The program is set up for one week at a time. Everything is there for each week independently.
While there are pictures of the foods, the calories, etc., are also broken down for each recipe. From one who does not eat in this fashion, I found that I could follow this easily. She leaves nothing to chance. I was impressed more than with anything stated that the recipes are for a single person. This is first time I've seen recipes for one. The foods looked amazing. The ingredients aided sparking my senses, they sound good. The carb count prevents me from trying any of the recipes.
Four stars -- this book is not for dummies. Minus one star as I didn't check the ease of ordering online the ingredients that would not be available easily.
Okay, this wildly surpassed my expectations. I own over 40 plant based and vegan cookbooks I bought from Amazon. However, none have compared to this one. Not only does it have recipes, it literally breaks down what the plant based diet is, how much protein you need to be intaking, a 4 week meal plan, and a more in depth information in regarding to kitchen tools/appliances you could need to help you achieve these goals. It's such a beautifully written book. Great recipe options with something in there that any level beginner to pro could achieve. I love the information given in regards to complete health and nutrients plus protein needs for YOU specifically. It's an absolute great grab for anyone who's beginning their plant based journey, I surely wish I had this when I started mine! I will highly recommend to others due to it being more than just a cookbook and very handy book for those wanting to venture into plant based lifestyles!
I received this book from NetGalley and the publishers to read and review. All statements above are my true opinions after fully reading this book.
I picked out this book to read because I'm a weightlifter who meal preps and like to eat mostly vegetarian/vegan and I was kind of disappointed. This book isn't really for me, the target audience seems to be new vegans who have never meal prepped. I'm not a Real Vegan, I do tend to cook some vegan dishes due to personal preference, but I always bristle a little at preachy veganism. Not my schtick.
High points:
-the sauces looked good
-every recipe has full nutritional info, love to see it
-there are a few recipes that I am genuinely planning on making
-the pictures that are in there are really appetizing
-pre-made shopping lists and meal prep game plans; I don't need these but I can see the appeal
Low points
-the dishes are... not that high protein in my opinion; some main dishes have ~7, which is not enough for me
In the nutritional info, you can see the P/C/F (protein/carb/fat) ratio for all the dishes and they are nowhere near fitting into my macros.
-I am immediately suspicious of any recipe that has onions in it that does not have you saute them first as an aromatic to build flavor, WHY would you throw raw onions into stock if it's anything other than a bland stew?
A final person gripe: as a native New Orleaninan, I will judge tf outta you if you ever serve me these red beans.
I would recommend this book to a person who wants to start vegan meal prepping and who doesn't track their macros.
Great book for a beginner. It does talk about high protein plant based foods, but I guess I was expecting or hoping it to have modifications on the recipes if you wanted to make them even higher protein. It does tell the total amount of protein for each recipe, too. And while i haven’t tried the recipes, yet, there were several I ear-marked that look really good.
There were lots of pages that seemed to have a lot of dead space. I liked the 4 week, week-by-week, plan. I think those who are new to WFPB eating will enjoy this book and find a good starting place to make it easier for transition.
Note - This is a high protein book, but it’s also high carbs. If you’re looking for Keto, this isn’t it. I understood that going in, but I think some readers may not. 4 out of 5 stars
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced copy.
This diet and nutrition book includes information on high-protein fruits, vegetables, nuts, and grains that help with this new way of eating. There are food lists, menus, and recipes. It is well done and jnformative.. #NetGalley #HighProteinPlantBasedDietForBeginners
I was going to give this book 4 stars, because it's one ingredient away from being fully vegan cookbook and guidebook, perfect for a person who is just starting a plant-based diet and needs to know exactly what they'll need to do so. But I guess I'll just settle for 4.5 stars.
It's one of the best plant-based books, with a list of substitutes and metric conversion chart(greatly appreciated).
I'm not sure if the author doesn't know that honey isn't vegan, because they do have agave and maple syrup in other recipes, so using honey was completely unnecessary.
I will most definitely be making some of the recipes from this book, will recommend the book to others as well, but will warn them about that one ingredient.
Thank you NetGalley and Zeitgeist for providing me with an early copy of this book.
In her book, High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners, Maya A. Howard provides both theoretical and practical information to tackle the possible problem that proper protein intake may cause when dealing with a plant-based diet.
At the beginning of my vegetarian journey I was afraid I would not be able to get as much protein as I was used to with an omnivorous diet, this book would have been a very nice resource three years ago!
Howard’s theoretical section on the topic is thorough and simple enough that the lay person will understand. Additionally, the recipes chosen are all explained step by step and nicely structured. I found that the template followed for the recipes is very clear, as the number of servings is indicated, as well as any possible allergies related to nuts or gluten. Additionally, the caloric and macronutrient breakdown is very helpful, should one be tracking their macros for health purposes.
I await the day the book is published to be able to get myself a physical copy!
Thank you Netgalley and publisher for giving this book.
It has very different recipes all of them seems really delicious. The book starts with protein contents in various vegetables, seeds, grains, etc. Followed by 4-week meal plan and various recipes.
I am definitely going to try out these amazing recipes.
Really disappointed. This isn’t a book with high protein recipes. Most recipes aren’t high in protein. Even if you disregard that high protein is defined as 20% peotein. These recipe aren’t higher protein than any other vegan recipe with some beans. The recipes are also very high in carbs (most readers seeking high protein don’t also want high carb). I can’t comprehend why sweetened almond milk is used both because it is sweet and also bc soy is higher protein 🤷🏻♀️
The recipes are also very uninspired- it’s the same recipes that have been done so many times over. I don’t think anymore needs multiple recipes for oatmeal, fruit smoothies, or another recipe for black bean burgers.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. (via Netgalley)
Feeling kind of meh about this one. I didn't really find most of the recipes to be particularly appealing and contained ingredients that may not be easy to find
Maya Howard has taken what most people fear as difficult and made it easy to understand! I know many people that think plant-based eating is too complicated so they never even try it. If that's you, give this book a try. Howard has a way of simplifying it for you! You will learn everything from what to eat to how to stock your kitchen so that you will have continued success! I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to add healthy food options to their diet.
I enjoyed this as I discovered there is more to a plant based diet than what I thought and it really made me wonder if this is the plan for me. The recipes looked very interesting and Ms. Howard takes great care in explaining everything.
Thank you NetGalley, Penguin Random House, Zeigeist, and Maya A. Howard for this advance read
Helpful way to start a plant based diet. I like that it was set out in a weekly schedule with the shopping lists and meals written out. good for following to begin until ready to branch out on your own.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
I enjoyed this book so much as it was an introduction to plant based eating. The book begins with a somewhat introduction to plant based eating and the benefits (done in a fun way tho) . Then progresses to recipes that were just easy too follow and definitely created to make eating more fun. Highly recommend it for everyone thinking of plant based eating.
“High-Protein Plant-Based Diet for Beginners” is the most helpful guide I have ever seen to help the home cook make the transition from a meat based diet to a plant-based one. Armed with Maya A. Howard’s 4 week meal plan, which includes not only a shopping list and recipes, but also day-by-day instructions for what to prep when, I felt more confident than ever in my ability to prepare a well-balanced plant-based diet that would meet all of my families nutritional requirements.
Many vegetarian cookbooks seem to be written for those already familiar with the vegetarian lifestyle, but I appreciate that this is truly a guide for beginners and that Howard offers such thoughtful insight on how and why a plant-based diet can be so beneficial for our health. I also appreciated her shopping staples and tips on products to avoid!
A true must read for anyone who wants to make a change to a plant-based diet. A cookbook and meal plan that we will return to again and again. I cannot wait to try the first week’s worth of recipes!
Firstly if your are going to sell a cookbook, have a stunning cover like this one that delivers. I appreciate when books give some nutritional nuts and bolts in the beginning for true beginners. I love how there are substitutions given as well as an understanding of expectations. We are given serving size, approximate prep times, equipment requirements, protein amount per meal, conversion chart, tips, nutritional breakdown per serving and how long "cooking" will take. Needs more pictures.
meal plan
There is a meal plan if you choose to use it along with a grocery list that gives quantities of what you will be needing for that week. It is all broken down into categories which is AMAZING! A lot of other books separate them by meal, no don't do that, I'm going to the store where everything is going to be mixed up. It also gives some prep suggestions before that week starts.
actual food
The images we do see are beautiful but you are not going to pull me into trying something effortlessly unless I can see what it might look like.

I am eager to try the innovative, protein-rich, recipes in this book that don’t take hours to create. The author has done a great job creating recipes with everyday ingredients plus some easy to find superfoods that all ages can enjoy.
