Well this wasn't what I was expecting and I just had to read it in one setting. as it was one of those page turners as it didn't go where I expected (can't say more due to spoilers)
Good read on a lazy Sunday morning
I was given a free copy by Bookouture and Netgalley but the review is entirely my own.
His Loving Wife is a gripping story that will have you turning pages with fervor. Miranda Smith’s smooth vocabulary builds the tension until it explodes onto the pages.
Kate, her husband, Andrew, and their two children, Willow and Noah, are recovering after a horrific event that took place a year ago. Each family member copes with the tragedy in his or her own way, and has developed ways of dealing with the stressors associated with that terrible night. When news of a possible release reaches her, Kate takes Andrew up on his idea for a family vacation. However, after seeing a strange figure following her and finding a mysterious object in a bag from her home-town supermarket, Kate worries that their family is being targeted for another attack.
I enjoyed the story. The author switches points-of-view between chapters, but it is still easy to read, and I felt it was necessary to make the plot richer and provide clarity. As a mother, I understood Kate’s actions, and I was on the edge of my seat by the climax of the book. I liked Miranda Smith’s style, and I’m going to read more of her books.
I recommend the book for experienced readers, due to suspenseful scenes and some romance.
I was given an advanced reader copy for my honest review.
His Loving Wife will be available on October 4, 2021.
The pacing of this book was a bit off. The book splits between a year ago, when the family were victims of a house invasion, and the current day, where they’re trying to recover from that night. The flashbacks get closer and closer to the current day, until they finally meet the current day, but honestly the current day could almost have been any other book for the first half or so. When things fell into place I had my suspicions of what was going on, but I didn’t have it fully down.
A family goes through a major trauma and the fall out continues for a year or so after. But what happens when the threat to your family isn’t the one you’ve been focused on? This book will get your heart racing! Great read from beginning to end!
This book was brilliant, so good that I immediately bought another of her books as soon as I finished reading it. It's difficult to give a synopsis without giving spoilers for one of the many facets of this story so I'll keep it brief but suffice to say that this book had me gripped all the way through.
A home invasion almost rips the family apart, the terror and repercussions from that night are almost too much to for the family to survive. The vacation is supposed to give them chance to heal and to forgive but nothing is quite what is seems. Nothing will ever be the same again but how many of them will survive to tell the tale.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to preview this title
I did not click with the book or the characters. I did not find the story believable. It simply did not work for me. A man breaking into the house of his ex from ages ago gets locked up for a long time. The family going away for a holiday to get over the shock - quite awhile after the break in. The ending was not believable. The writing was good and it's a fast read.
Overall this was a well written book which held my attention most of the time with good characters that I just wanted to keep reading about.
I did feel that about halfway through it lost its momentum slightly but it did pick up and the ending was good.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this book.
His Loving Wife, by Miranda Smith, was a bit of a wild ride read. The majority of the story is told by Kate, the wife/mother in the story. Kate’s house was broken into by her college ex-boyfriend. The entire family - Kate, her husband Andrew, and children (Willow and Noah) are still recovering emotionally and mentally a year after the break-in. This story is told in both present day and via flashbacks. I found the beginning of this book a bit slow, but toward the middle it picked up pace and became a fast-paced engaging read. There are a number of twists and turns, though if the reader’s paying attention, you can figure where the plot is going … and the ending I found a bit, sadly, predictable (enjoyable, but predictable). I found some of the side stories a bit interesting, but some of the side stories seemed to just be, well, side stories that didn't always add much to the onward progression of the plot. There was also a huge lack of communication - which was kinda the point of this story, but at times I just wanted to shake a few shoulders and say “you’re going to just brush this under the carpet?” A solid 3.5 stars, but I’d read another book by this author as this was an interesting concept.
This was a great thriller with slow-burning suspense that kept me coming back to its pages whenever I had a chance. There were a couple of things I figured out ahead of time because they were a bit predictable. But overall that didn’t take much of the enjoyment away and there were still surprises left. There were parts that had me feeling like I was the one in danger and gave me that nervous feeling in my stomach. When things started coming together in the end, they came together quickly and made it the ending of a true thriller.
What if the person you are supposed to trust most in the world seems to be losing their grip on reality? AND… What if it’s all your fault?
When someone broke into their home a year ago Kate and Andrew didn’t realize this was the beginning of the end for their family.
A family vacation is all they need to get things back on track and fix their broken family though, right? How wrong they were!!! Nothing could be further from the truth.
Miranda Smith will keep you guessing up until the last page in this psychological thriller.
Review:Twisted right from the start, secrets, a psychological thriller that will leave you setting at the edge of your set, and will have you just setting there reading page after page to see what happens next , and making you ask yourself is anyone really safe .unpredictable, fast-paced, as well as nerve- wracking . And a characters I liked but there was a few that I hated, and if and when you read this book your see which ones I'm talking about
This book was a slow burn but my god did it pay off. The last quarter was unbelievably tense that I was compelled to keep reading and I could not stop. Kate was a fantastic character and I really felt for her and her family. The ending was a shock to me and the major twist I did not expect or even thought that could happen. I loved my time with this book and I’ll definitely be purchasing this book when it comes out.
Twisting Domestic Noir…
A surprise holiday, a family in recovery, a chance to bond and a chance to talk but is everything really behind them? A chilling, twisting domestic noir effectively told in short, snappy chapters with an edge of seat feel. A compelling and suspenseful read.
His Loving Wife was SO good! A must read for psychological thriller fans! Miranda Smith’s writing makes you feel as if you’re sitting right there with the Brooks Family watching everything unfold, one nightmare after the next!
I was on the edge of my seat with this one! It was captivating, unpredictable, fast-paced, and the ending had my heart racing! This was the first book I’ve read by Miranda Smith and it surely won’t be my last!
His loving wife, was an exciting domestic thriller that kept me interested the whole way through. It is about Kate and her family's reaction to a terrifying event that left them all changed forever. I loved the layout of the book, I am a big fan of small chapters and each chapter being a different point over the past year. Its a book about trust and communication in a family, about how they individually cope with the terror they had to endure, There was some plot twists and overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Sorry this book was not for me, I found it rather silly and Andrew the husband was rather a feeble character.
Kate who was strong wanted to know who came into their bedroom. At night, and why Andrew froze.
The intruder was an old boyfriend of Kates, who thought her daughter was his.
From then on Andrew took to drink and found he could not cope, until he found help with a men’s councilling group, who were not all who they were supposed to be, and Andrew spiralled into a mentally unstable man.
This book begs to be devoured in one sitting!
The Brooks family are still reeling from the trauma of a home invasion last year. When they head to a vacation home near the ocean for a week of R & R, they all agree, it’s just what the family needs after a terrifying year. Just as they begin to feel like they are regaining their old lives, something happens to put them all on alert.
Despite the perpetrator behind bars, Kate feels she can’t let down her guard. Somehow he’s still finding a way to keep her on edge. She thinks she sees him everywhere. Then she starts snooping around the rental house….
Check your pulse before you begin. This begins as a psychological/domestic suspense and then about 75% of the way through it ramps up, gets twisty and as it hurtles towards the end at breakneck speed, it ventures into thriller category.
Miranda Smith – this is your best one yet! I LOVE your writing style and really appreciate how you manipulate the timeline to keep readers in the dark as long as possible.
This nail-biting read needs to top every suspense/thriller readers TBR list…NOW.
Publishes October 4, 2021.
I was gifted this advance copy by Miranda Smith, Bookouture, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
Suspense at it's best, you will just lose yourself in this book. When Kate is woken up by a sound in the house she is the first to react but is less impressed with her husbands response especailly when they have two children also asleep in the house.
Time goes on and they all try and get back to normal with some help from support groups and individuals. When Andrew her husband books a holiday away out of the blue Kate hopes it will all do them some good. Only certain things soon make the holdiay to be their worst nightmare. The question is did her husband book it with good intentions or is he holding something back, only time will tell.
I loved this book from start to finish and will look forward to reading more from this author.
She most certainly is a loving wife. She proves it more than once. When her loved ones are in danger, she does not hesitate. She acts and how. The one million dollar question is though is he a loving husband…?
When a family is in danger, you would think both parents try and do everything to protect each other. What though when push comes to shove and it seems like your husband has turned in to a stone? It’s devastating of course, but you try to understand. When he starts shutting you out, you are not prepared to take it any longer.
Your husband realises this too and suggests a holiday. That were you will have more time to spend together and mend every broken piece. Sounds like a plan, right…
Weird things happen there too and Kate is slowly but definitely starting to unravel the mystery. This is where we are going to find out what her husband’s definition of loving really means…
This is a great story where a blast from the past is the beginning of a nightmare. A wonderful domestic thriller with a devastating and heart breaking ending. I loved it. 5 stars
Thank you
After a terrifying break in a family's life is changed. What happens later will leave you speechless. An exciting page turner to the very end!
