DNF @ 20%. While I appreciate the nuances of a good teen murder mystery, this was just all over the place and frankly not worth the effort to try and parse together. The book starts off with a bang, and I was left feeling like I accidentally flipped it open to the third or fourth chapter instead of starting at the beginning. The writing itself was fine, but not memorable.
An intelligent Y/A mystery that focuses on Savannah, the sister of Piper, who fell off a cliff and is now comatose. Savannah is determined to investigate and re-trace Piper's last steps and uncover the relationships that may have led to her injuries. Romance and betrayals keep interest high, and there is more than one secret to uncover before the mystery is solved. Satisfying conclusion. Recommended for Y/A mystery lovers who enjoy in-depth characters and stories.

My thoughts on this book:
1. The writing
- This is the main reason why I'm enjoying this book. The writing flows smoothly and I manage to read the book until the last page because I love how the author spins her words. The writing also gives a strong impression that something dark and twisty is going on, and there are secrets hanging in the air that the main character needs to find out.
2. The plot:
- The story is told in Savannah's point of view (Piper's sister), and she is trying to find out the truth, as Piper's accident is really strange. I think the plot is quite okay, though it feels repetitive at some parts. But, the genre of this book is mystery after all, so I'm considering it as acceptable since the author might want to mess up with your head, making the readers confused on what really happened to Piper.
3. The characters:
- Too bad I am not attached to any of the characters. I just find most of them annoying and cannot be trusted. At the end of the story, I feel really sad for Piper. What happened to her feels so unfair after all she has gone through. She might be seen as the perfect girl; with good grades, favorite child, excel at anything she does, can easily develop talent in new things she tries; but she is actually suffering inside from betrayals and fake hopes.
The sister, Savannah, is an outcast in the family. She received unfair treatment from her parents despite being the older sister. At first, I felt symphatized with her, but as the story goes, oh god, I really can't stand with her attitude. What she did to Piper was horrible, it is wrong to do something like that, and my heart breaks even more when I read about Piper's reaction to what Savannah did.
The other characters involved in the mystery are more or less the same with Savannah. We all have secrets, and if it's a secret of course we hide it. Sadly, the author did not dive deeper into the other characters, thus leaving me feeling unsatisfied as I can't really understand the circumstances of their actions.
Overall, this book is suitable for beginner for mystery book. Even though I am not really good with the genre, I find myself enjoying the story and keep on flipping the pages to discover the truth. If you are a fan of mystery with high-school setting, you should check this out!
Interesting book. Kind of went around in circles. Really not too much to say about this one. Just okay.
I love the concept of this book and it was an entertaining read, however it wasn’t my favourite thing in the world.
I did not connect with the main character at all and I think that was a big part of it for me. I didn’t find her to have many likeable traits, especially in her approach to finding the truth about her sister. She not only continuously puts her own plan in jeopardy by being unable to control her emotions and spurting bits of evidence to the first person she comes across, but she seems more focused on being able to clear her own conscience than actually having her sister back.
The buildup to each ‘suspect reveal’ felt anticlimactic a lot of the time as well, so it felt like just chasing tails which just isn’t my thing.
The ending bugged me because while we got an explanation, it didn’t feel like proper closure I guess? I think it would’ve been good to see another POV as the last chapter, or something along those lines.
I didn’t love it, but this book is great for anyone after an easy, YA mystery read that doesn’t require a heap of complex thinking :)

Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets is a compelling YA mystery with plenty of twists and turns.
I thought at several points I'd guessed who had hurt Savannah's sister, only to have my theories obliterated on the next page. One of the best things about this book is all the secrets and motivations each character is hiding, which is what makes the mystery so interesting.
The only criticisms I have are that the book is a little slow to get going (it really picks up when the characters set off for their camping trip however, and once we got to this point I was hooked) and once or twice the teenage characters used phrases that seemed so randomly old fashioned that it distracted me slighty).
This book reminded me a little of the Point Horror books I adored as a teen.
I would recommend to anyone looking for an easy, twisty read.
This is a YA possibly murder mystery. About a month ago Piper jumped off a cliff, or did she? That is what her sister is trying to figure out. After finding a note in Pipers locker telling her there was an extra wilderness club meeting at the exact time and place piper jumped Savannah gets suspicious and decides to start her own investigation.
This was not the book for me. I thought it was a bit slow and struggled to get into it. We slowly discover more about Piper and Savannah as the book goes on which I did like but I found Savannah a bit unlikeable. Maybe its just because she reminded me of someone but it kind of brought down the book for me.
Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this book, it felt quite rushed to me - the chapters didn't seem to flow well enough for me, and any time a problem arose, it seemed to have an instant resolution half a page later.
I couldn't quite gel with the plot, I wasn't captivated enough unfortunately, which meant I also formed no relationship with any of the characters, so I found myself unfussed about what happened next.
Though I think it could mostly be because this is aimed at a far younger audience. However, this was a quick read.
3 for neutral, but this one is not for me. A bit too slow and wasn’t able to enjoy enough to finish. Will update if able to finish at a later date!
Piper, who's been in a coma ever since her accident left such a mystery for her sister who's full of guilt. Did she actually tried to take her life? or someone else did? Which begs the question... why?
Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets is such a fast and easy read. There is so much drama circulating each angsty character with their own secrets to keep. Every clue leads to one character and another with personal stories to tell. For a couple number of time, I actually thought I got it all figured out, but the plot twist proved me wrong. The last part is what caught me off guard, and it's what impressed me more. Surprise!
I loved Chelsea's writing style, very easy for readers to get into. Not a single second that I, as a reader, was uninterested. No parts bore me. The pace was neither too fast nor too slow.
If you're fond of typical YA Mystery/Thriller, maybe you should try reading the book. However,

Thank you to Netgalley and the SOURCEBOOKS Fire for an eARC of this book. I am including my honest review.
Piper is in a coma. People seem certain that she jumped from a cliff along a popular hiking trail. Her sister Savannah doesn't believe that she jumped and is determined to get to the bottom of what has happened. She has her own reasons for wanting to find out, and she is filled with guilt over her last interactions with her sister. As Savannah tries to piece together the day Piper fell, it seems that everyone has a secret to hide. She determines that someone from the wilderness club Piper joined must be involved so she tags along on a weekend camping trip to try to see what information she can suss out. Everyone is a suspect. Secrets are unearthed. Slowly, the pieces start to come together and the picture of what took place becomes clear.
I think teens will like this book but to be honest, I found it a bit unremarkable. I read a fair amount of teen mystery/suspense books. I was engaged because I enjoy the genre, but was a little underwhelmed at the end, partly because there were so many different suspects throughout the book that it almost seemed like a guess as to which one would stick at the end. The big plan to "catch" the suspect fell flat for me as well, it just seemed too unrealistic and illogical.
As far as content notes go, suicide is a minor theme since most people assume Piper jumped.
I loved the description and premise for this novel. The novel was fast-paced which I enjoyed, but I found the ending anti-climatic, I enjoyed the chapters from Piper's perspective and wished the novel gave us more insight into all the characters as they felt one-dimensional. With that I said, I would still recommend this as a fun, quick read for lovers of young adult thrillers.
I received this free ARC from NetGalley, the review reflected below is my opinion.
This was a fun YA thriller with lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing. It was super addictive and I didn’t want to put it down. I really enjoy books where I cannot predict how it ends and this one definitely delivered.
Would recommend, especially those who love a good YA thriller.
A quick read about a group of high school students, all with secrets and dysfunctional relationships. Savannah is investigating what happened to her sister Piper, was it murder or a suicide?
It kept me reading until the last page to figure out what happened and let me tell you...the PLOT TWIST I was not expecting.
If you're a fan of Pretty Little Liars, you will enjoy this.
a quick light read about a group of high school students, all with secrets and messy relationships. The main character is investigating what happened to her sister, was it suicide or a murder attempt. Some healing among the characters and some growth
Enjoyable and fun, a decent mystery and readable in one go. I think younger teens would really enjoy it, but even though I love YA, this isn’t one that quite translated across to adult readers for me.
The mystery was good and keeps you guessing, but the ending was abrupt. I found Savannah (main character) quite irritating - and thought the way she kept jumping from suspect to suspect was quite frustrating. I also didn’t find it believable that all these people helped her after she accused them of murder.
It was ok. But a bit shallow. And not the best of its genre.
As a middle school teacher, I would recommend this book to my mature readers. I teach 6th grade, so it is not appropriate for all of my students, but I think many would enjoy it. It is free from sex and drinking, but there is mention of drug use. At its core, this novel is a story about using people, specifically family, and the lessons learned when that happens. Plenty of twists and turns, and a fairly satisfying ending.
When Savannah's sister falls from "Suicide Point", everyone assumes she jumped. But what if she didn't? When Savannah uncovers some possible threats, she decides to investigate.
This started off a little rocky for me, but quickly sucked me in. Lots of twists and turns that kept me guessing. A great YA thriller!
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for an early copy for review.
Piper Sullivan has been in a coma for a month as a result of a strange hiking accident. The outcome doesn’t look good and its highly likely that Piper will not be waking up. Her sister Savannah is devastated. She and her sister were not on good terms before the accident, and a text message sent to Piper in the heat of the moment has her wracked with guilt.
While borrowing a sweater from her sister’s locker at school, Savannah discovers a startling note inviting Piper to attend a meeting of the wilderness club. This meeting was to take place in the same location, on the same day of Piper’s accident. Her accident was no accident. Determined to find the answers shes looking for, Savannah joins the club. She quickly finds out that her sisters seemingly perfect life isn’t so perfect. Savannah attends the wilderness club’s weekend long camping trip at the same location Piper was last seen. Everyone is a suspect and things quickly escalate as secrets are revealed and friendships are tested.
This proved itself an angsty YA thriller, with an equal focus on teenage drama and murder. The ending definitely took me by surprise and the concluding twists were my favourite part of the story. The journey to get there sometimes focused too closely on the interpersonal relationships of the characters rather than on the surrounding mystery for me, however. I definitely had a fun time whilst reading this though, which was enhanced by the fast-pace and my intrigue over Piper's history.
This ARC was provided to me via Kindle, SOURCEBOOKS Fire and by #NetGalley. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
It’s a touch slow in the beginning just stick it out. If you like a good teen thriller this one’s for you. It definitely ends up delivering.
