This book sucks you in quickly because it jumps right in which I appreciated. There is a good casts of characters providing for many possible suspects. I spent a good amount of time thinking I knew exactly who was responsible and was shocked when I was wrong because it was a reach. Savannah really irked me though - she made a ton of bad and impulsive decisions but I guess that’s what teenagers do. Overall, I think this was too YA for me but others will find it enjoyable.
3.5 stars
Piper Sullivan is in a coma after falling from Vanderwild Point, otherwise known by locals as “Suicide Point.” Everyone believes she tried to commit suicide, including her sister, Savannah. Savannah was horrible to Piper just before the fall. When a few things start to not add up, Savannah believes that not only is it not her fault Piper fell, but it wasn’t a suicide attempt. It was a murder attempt.
Savannah starts putting herself in Piper’s shoes. She’s perfect, smart, popular. Everything Savannah is not. While she starts to uncover more and more clues about Piper’s life, she realizes she doesn’t know her sister at all.
This book was alright, but I feel like I’ve read it before. It was suspenseful enough, but after a while, I got tired of Savannah accusing everyone and yelling at everyone that she knew, without a doubt, they were the ones who tried to kill Piper.
I was pulled back in by the ending, though. It was not at all what I expected, and I don’t think I would have ever predicted that ending. Overall, it was a fun book that I would recommend to people new to the thriller/horror genre.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the chance to read this advanced review copy!
CW: suicide/suicide attempt, toxic relationship/friendship, infidelity, drug use
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
Piper and Savannah are sisters who no longer get along. They have their own lives and it works for them. That is until Piper jumps off a bridge and is in a coma. Savannah believes she caused it until clues keep showing up that someone hurt Piper. Savannah decides to join a survival club in order to discover who tried to kill her sister.
This book honestly hooked me from page one and I ended up flying through it pretty fast. I wasn't sure what to expect but it's a good amount of mystery that kept me hooked all the way through the book. I definitely recommend reading this book.
T/W; Suicide
One-line Review: Typical YA mystery
The start and the build-up of the book is an absolute banger which makes the conclusion a tidbit underwhelming. I enjoy reading simple mysteries. So, on one hand, I liked the book. For someone who has not read YA Thrillers before, this could be a pick.
Savanah and Piper are sisters and Piper is a goody-two-shoes. The book starts with Piper being in a coma which is either a suicide attempt or someone pushing her or maybe she just fell, Savanah is afraid that she might be the reason why Piper might have tried committing suicide, as she was not the best sibling (trust me, she is not).
Savanah ends up joining the hiking camp to find out who did it and well let us say that Savanah is not the brightest investigator out there. You would want to hold her and put some logic into her sometimes while reading the book.
Overall, I would not say I totally disliked the book, I mean the build-up was actually really good. A decent 3.2 stars from me.
Savannah has not been a good sister to Piper. When it appears that Piper has attempted to jump from Suicide Point, she feels like she has caused her sisters near death. While Piper lays in a coma Savannah starts to suspect that maybe Piper didn’t jump. Then she finds clues that tell her that there is more to the story than meets the eye and perhaps she can find the truth so that everyone didn’t believe that Piper was suicidal.
If you liked One of Us Is Lying then you will enjoy this book, There is teenage drama, angst and a side of mystery. This was an entertaining and quick read that had me suspecting many of the characters at one time or another!
This was a really fast and thrilling mystery. It definitely focused on the teen drama and secrets kept by friends from each other. I did not expect the ending at all so I think it accomplished what it was supposed to. I actually read this in one sitting as I had to find out what happened.
Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets is a YA thriller with one question to answer: who would want Piper Sullivan dead?
Piper has been in a coma ever since she fell off of a cliff, and her family is grief-stricken that she may never wake up. Savannah, Piper's sister, believes she'll never know what happened until she finds a note in Piper's locker inviting her to the location of her accident on the day of her fall. Savannah slowly unravels the mystery of Piper's final moments while coming to terms with her fraught relationship with her sister.
I love thrillers with short chapters and hooks that just lasso you into reading more and more until you realize you've finished the book, and Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets definitely delivered. This is also the first book I've read where I share a name with the main character! I wish that we could have delved deeper into the different characters. There were so many different characters (which definitely kept me guessing who the culprit could be), but it prevented me as the reader from being able to go in-depth with the different personalities at play.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Piper is in a coma after a hiking accident. The police have ruled it as a suicide, because the place where she fell is known as suicide point, but piper’s sister Savannah refuses to believe this story, and takes it upon herself to figure out what happened. After finding a strange note in her sister’s locker, Savannah is convinced that her sister’s fall was no accident, and every one of her friends becomes a suspect.
The premise was kind of interesting and the pacing was really fast, but I have not enjoyed this book as much as I was expecting. The writing was not my favourite, and it made the characters feel flat and not very interesting. Savannah is not very smart and her detective skills are… questionable. The relationships between characters were also a bit flat.
Also, is it me or is the title misleading? This is not what I thought it would be, there are no dead girls, just a girl in a coma.
First of all, thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance copy of Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets. This mystery was enjoyable and a fairly quick read; however, I struggled to connect to the characters. I liked Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets, but I don't think it's one that will hold a place in my memory moving forward. On the other hand, mystery and suspense novels are very hot in my library right now, so if I have the funds, I will purchase Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets for my collection.
A simple YA mystery. A basic story line with a fairly simple ending. The book is short with not a lot going on. I would like to see more of a build up or captivating aspects to the book to keep reader’s interest. Not my favorite kind of read.
Savannah is dealing with the failed suicide attempt by her younger sister, Piper, that has left her in a coma. After finding a note in Piper’s locker inviting her to the place of her attempted suicide on the exact day, Savannah starts investigating whether it was really a suicide attempt or did someone have a reason to harm her. This leads Savannah on a weekend trip with the schools wilderness club that Piper had recently joined. As Savannah finds out more about the people in the club she realizes they all might have had motive to harm Piper. Everyone is keeping secrets, even Savannah. Can she find out what really happened to her sister or will she die trying?
I really enjoyed this YA thriller it was a quick, easy read that still had me guessing towards the end. There were many red herrings that made the story interesting and well thought out. Lately, I’m really loving to read books taking place in the wood so I was really excited to read this one and it did not disappoint!
The premise of this book started so promising and I really liked the trail of crumbs as it started. Unfortunately I lost interest about halfway through and the book did not keep my attention.
Thank you Netgalley for this Arc!
Savannah's little sister, Piper, is in a coma. However, Savannah does not believe the story of an accident. She becomes obsessed with finding out who did this to her sister. This leads the reader into a fast-paced, mysterious and quick read that is sometimes exhilarating.
I didn't completely love this but I can see how others would. I really feel that the MC could have been a stronger a more level headed character. Really, some of the decisions were just obviously not the right choices and that's something that gets on my nerves.
I would definitely say to give this a go and see what you think!
Out April 5th!
When Savannah's sister Piper ends up in a coma, and is made to believe that this was an accident, she doesn't believe it; she thinks there is more to her sister's injuries. In this twisty gritty YA thriller we follow Savannah as she investigates her sister's accident. In doing so she joins the school's survival club, where she realises she can't trust everyone, and everyone has their secret's including her.
Over the course of the book Savannah believes that each member of the survival club could of tried to kill her sister. At time's her idea's did seem quite far fetched and outlandish, and she put herself in some dangerous situations which could have been avoided.
The pacing of the book was good to begin with but then became rushed at the end, and the final twist was a let down. When reading mystery's I want to be left in surprise but this unfortunately didn't. I did however enjoy getting a perspective from Piper in the lead up to the accident it allowed for her character to feel more fleshed out, and added to some of the suspense.
Overall, this is a fun YA mystery and I can see a lot of people enjoying it.
After a tragic accident, Piper Sullivan is in a coma and not expected to recover. But her sister Savannah does't believe it was an accident or a suicide attempt, like her parents and the police say it was.
After finding a mysterious note in her sister's locker at school, Savannah is certain that someone was out to hurt Piper and she is determined to find out who and why.
Because, maybe, just maybe, that will make her feel less guilty about her last interactions with Piper and what she did to hurt Piper so badly that she may have decided to try to kill
But Savannah isn't the only one keeping secrets about Piper... and just how many secrets was Piper herself keeping?
If you are a fan of un-reliable narrators, then this is a book for you. Every single character has something to hide and a possible motive to want to hurt Piper.
This was a fast-paced, YA thriller that keeps you guessing until the end about what really did happen to Piper.
Thanks for NetGalley and SourceBooks Fire for a review copy of this book
Some of you will read the blurb and say this book will remind you very much of "The Night Olivia Fell". Having read both, I can see some similarity, but I liked this a lot more. The characters are mostly angsty teens who are unreliable narrators. They each have a secret, including Piper and so each feels responsible for what happened, Savannah, her sister, feels just as guilty but she is convinced one of their friends is guilty.
The author gives us characters who are mostly fleshed out when their secrets slip, and they all appear one way but act differently. We get a few different red herrings, because Savannah is a teenager, not a trained detective.
I was particularly happy with the ending. Sometimes you get a happy ending, sometimes you don't, but it's most important to be happy with it. Does it make sense? Does it fit the characters? In this case, yes. I look forward to reading more books by this very talented author.
I truly enjoyed this story right from the start! Author Chelsea Ichaso wasted no time before jumping into the mystery of what really happened to a young high school student the day she seemingly fell off a cliff. Was it an accident? Did she jump? Or...was she pushed? Piper's older sister Savannah is determined to find out.
This novel keeps readers guessing what could possibly happen next by introducing a variety of potential suspects. It kept me thoroughly entertained and had me reading for hours straight. I highly recommend this to true crime and mystery lovers looking for story that keeps you on the edge of your seat while also getting right to the point.
Thank you to the author, publisher, and Net Galley for sharing this wonderful mystery with me!
This was a quick and easy read, but I’m not sure where I stand with it. It wasn’t good, but it wasn’t terrible either. It is a typical YA mystery so the plot is based around a school/high school students. I did find the MC Savannah annoying. I was frustrated with her decision skills or I guess the lack of. I was also underwhelmed with the ending.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this novel for an honest review. It is set to be published in April 2022.
"Dead Girls Can't Tell Secrets" by Chelsea Ichaso is a fast-paced, high-concept mystery with a very compelling story.
I found some of the plot points to be too far-fetched for my taste (Jacey couldn't possibly have seen a single metal chain link halfway down the side of the mountain all the way from up there), not to mention a few scenes that felt just a little bit too cartoonish and thus made me laugh when I was probably supposed to hold my breath (such as when Jacey is slipping off the mountain ledge, and the others form a human chain to pull her back up to safety).
I also didn't particularly like the characterization: basically, all the characters except for Piper (and, surprisingly, Tyler) reveal themselves to be spiteful monsters, completely unlikeable and unrelatable, while Piper herself by contrast is a sort of saint martyr, exasperatingly perfect under every point of view: her looks, her brains, her morals, her interpersonal relationship skills, her academic successes...
The ending was great, though: the final series of twists all clustered together totally blindsided me!
Overall, this story was highly entertaining, but I'd have enjoyed it more if the characters had been more relatable. As it is, I couldn't get properly invested in their life-or-death vicissitudes.
I appreciate the effort the author made to tell this story. But it was done in a way that the main character was absolutely intolerable.
Savannah is trying to figure out exactly what happened to her little sister who took a terrible fall on a hike, putting her in a coma. She is determined to find out who is responsible for hurting her.
I couldn’t get past Savannah’s self centered-ness. While she is noble in the way of stopping at nothing to find the truth, her methods are still so self serving. And her accuse, rinse, repeat interrogation method was exhausting.
This was a mediocre ya mystery, but it wasn’t unreadable. There were plenty of twists and turns but I felt dizzy by the end. An unfortunate feeling when the conclusion was lackluster.
