Books in this series never disappoints as they're fast paced, gripping and keep me on the edge.
This one was no exception and I couldn't put it down.
A solid plot full of twists and turns, a great Kelly, an interesting part regarding prisons.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine
When the bodies of two former inmates of Highfield Prison are found horrifically tortured, DI Kelly Porter must try to find out what has happened since their release that has angered someone so much. With unrest due to the poor conditions in the prison threatening to turn explosive, Kelly knows that there will be some resistance to her investigation, but will stop at nothing to find the truth.
I think I have just about got my breath back after reading the most explosive book of the series so far! By setting much of Lying Ways in Highfield Prison, Rachel Lynch has created an extremely claustrophobic read that kept me on my toes throughout. A very damning picture of the prison service is created as we see the effects of overcrowding, drug use and the market for mobile phones in an institution that has become extremely understaffed.
Kelly’s tenacity really comes to the fore as she challenges authority to find the killers of the two men, facing corruption along the way. I have always felt that Kelly is the sort of boss I’d like to work for – great at her job, not afraid to get her hands dirty and someone who would protect her team at all costs. We see all of this in Lying Ways.
I have read all of this series and I can say with some confidence that this is my favourite one so far. Fast-paced, thrilling and full of excitement, I hope that there is much more of Kelly Porter to come!
It’s scary to think about all the different ways being a soldier active in a war can change a person’s brain. Or how easy it would be to hide a narcissistic personality behind the mask of being a soldier.
I can understand Kelly’s decision in the end. It’s hard to take a betrayal like that. One has to wonder why the welfare of a family doesn’t weigh higher than a stranger’s.
This was a brilliant read as usual , I love all of Rachel Lynch's Kelly Porter series , Kelly is a believable lead character and I love the way she interacts with her team .
They are called when a released convict is found murdered in an awful manner , it is soon linked to the death of another recently released convict from the local prison in similar circumstances . Kelly has her work cut out for her as lips are sealed at the prison .
A brilliant tense final third of the book had me on the edge of my seat
Excellent , fast paced . Strongly recommended
#LyingWays #NetGalley Another excellent installment in the DI Kelly porter Series from Rachel lynch. Fast paced with lots of action and plenty of twists and turns to keep me turning the pages until late into the night! Nice to see more of the personal side of Kelly now she has become a mother and all the jiggling that entails with such a high profile job. I will be interested to see how the relationship with Johnny moves forward (or not!) in the future. Can't wait for the next in this series. An excellent 5 stars!!
DI Kelly Porter is back from maternity leave and has to deal with the murder of two former inmates of a local high security prison whilst feeling guilty about leaving Johnny with their baby. Highton Prison is over-crowded and there are clearly dark dealings going on in there between both prisoners and prison officers including the governor. Kelly and Team follow these, turn up army veterans with PTSD whilst driving miles and miles around the Cumbrian countryside - it must make people think about these somewhat remote places and the times it takes to do things in areas of poor mobile phone coverage. It's very true to life there! Matters escalate into a full-blown riot in the prison with casualties and frustrations. Thought provoking. The story ties well with Johnny's background, also a PTSD sufferer but who is coming to terms with himself and helping former colleagues, not always to good effect. Also thought provoking. As 9th in the series Kelly has come a long way and there seems to be plenty more in the ink-well of the author. Thanks to NetGalley and Canelo for an advance story in exchange for my honest review.
Another fantastic book from Rachel Lynch. I loved seeing how motherhood had changed Kelly's perspective, her friendship with Kate and the tension in her relationship with Johnny. As always, I adored the Lake District setting and the crime mystery kept me on my toes until the last page.
Kelly is just back from maternity leave when she starts to investigate a couple of murders of men just released from the local high security prison. She is frustrated that there is not a great deal to go on in the beginning, but the evidence and clues come together bit by bit. Set in Cumbria, the descriptions of the places are spot on.
This is the 9th book of a series, though works fine as a stand alone.
The last few chapters are full of suspense and very gripping. The rest of the book is mostly well written with likeable characters . I thought the descriptions of the baby, Lizzy , were inconsistent , Some of what she could do was too far advanced .
A good crime thriller though which takes the reader through the investigation . It is believable and well put together, in places gory and nail biting as the pressure builds up.
Thank you to Net Galley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review
A Dark Turn…
The ninth in the Detective Kelly Porter series and our Detective is faced with the death of two former prison inmates. Does the prison itself hold the key to the murders? Events are soon to take a dark turn. With credible characters and a gripping storyline this is a worthy addition to this long running series.
Lying Ways is book 9 in the excellent DI Porter series. I have enjoyed this series from the start due to the realness of the storylines and the believable characters.
This time out, Kelly has recently returned to work after having her baby Lizzie while her partner Johnny is taking the lead on the childcare front. It is refreshing to see how Kelly deals with something a lot of people can empathise with, going back to work after having a child, and seeing another strand of this series and character that is grounded in realness.
At work, Kelly is dealing with a murder that has links to the local prison adter the victim is found to be a recently released prisoner. She also uncovers possible links to army veterans suffering from PTSD which leads her to butt heads with Johnny when he refuses to talk about his counselling work.
This continues to be a great series that I feel is following a natural curve in its overall story. The team and other characters feel like old friends now and I am looking forward to seeing what comes next!
Highton prison sits nestled within the moors of western Cumbria, close to the coastal road. When two former inmates turn up dead, DI Kelly Porter is tasked with finding out why. It soon becomes obvious that she is hunting for one killer and the place where both victims were incarcerated holds the key. As Kelly gets closer to unpicking the relationships between the officers and their wards, a full scale prison riot explodes with one of her team caught in the middle.
This is the ninth book in the series & another well written edge of the seat read. I love how I’ve got to know the characters throughout the series. The characters have depth & the pace is fast. Kelly is returning to work after a short maternity leave & Johnny is left holding the baby. I also loved the sub plot, which had more of an impact on me than the main story. This wasn’t my favourite of the series but was still a very good read. I look forward to more
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read
This latest addition to the excellent DI Kelly Porter series finds her with two grisly murders which are connected to Highton prison. The enquiries reveal a side to prison life which makes for disturbing reading but which I believe will be fact based. As with the other books in the series there is a mix of work life and home life and Kelly’s attempts to balance the two. Good plots and solid characters make this a series that I hope continues for a while.
Thanx to netgalley for letting me review this book in exchange for an honest review. I love the DI kelly porter series. Kelly and johnny have a 2 month old child lizzie, kelly has gone back to work and johnny has taken on the role of stay at home dad. Will he start to resent kelly? Somebogy is killing the ex prisoners of hmp highton, Kelly's partner who is an ex service man counsells people who have left the services and suffer with ptsd.. kelly on the law side thinks everything is black and white that if you commit a crime you get punished, whereas johnny is of the opinion, that putting them in jail is not helping and that they need rehabilitation. Will this break up the couple?, will they be able to agree to disagree?. I couldnt put this book down, highley recommend ...
This was a brilliant crime book. I’ve only read one of Rachel Lynch’s books and I loved it. This one was no exception it was brilliant and I found it interesting and very addictive. I’ve got others of hers on my pile of books to read and I’ll get to them eventually. Although at times this one was gory with the descriptions I still enjoyed it and I loved the fact it was set in the Lake District. It didn’t matter that I’ve read this one out of order as I could follow the story without any problems. My thanks to Netgalley and the publishers for giving me the opportunity to read this book in return for an honest review.
Book 9 in the series with DI Kelly Porter. After two bodies of newly released prisoners are found dead, Kelly has to juggle her home life of her new born baby girl and her partner, Johnny with this new case. The prison the men were released from, HMP Highton features heavily and paints a grim picture. As usual the prisoners are not at all helpful and nor surprisingly are the prison staff. Then a riot breaks out and Kelly's team is trapped. This is a page turning moment. I enjoyed this book despite it being centred around the prison and look forward to the next in the series.
I’d like to thank Canelo and NetGalley for giving me the opportunity to read ‘Lying Ways’, the ninth in the Detective Kelly Porter series written by Rachel Lynch, in exchange for my honest and unbiased review.
Jack ‘Dinger’ Bell is found dead in a derelict warehouse and soon after the body of Dean Kirby is found in similar circumstances, the connection between the men being that they’ve recently been released from HMP Highton. DI Kelly Porter is called in to join her team in the Serious Crime Squad to investigate the murders. As both dead men were recently inmates at Highton, Kelly questions not only those prisoners who knew them but the prison officers too.
‘Lying Ways’ begins with DI Kelly Porter feeding breakfast to her excitable two-month-old daughter Lizzie and struggling to find enough hours in the day to spend with her partner Johnny Frietze. As soon as I started reading I’ve become involved with the characters and as the plot progresses it becomes gripping and gruesome at times with lots of drama, suspense and bloodshed. When Kelly questions Johnny about the effects of PTSD on serving soldiers it leads to an increasing coolness in their relationship which is a shame. As Kelly and her team get closer to identifying the killer the story becomes increasingly exciting as a riot breaks out in the prison causing damage and death with one of the team caught in the middle of the action. I thought the book concentrated too much on the prison that at times I found tedious and although the descriptions of the characters and countryside were very good I didn’t enjoy this thriller as much as some of the others in the series. But saying that, it was still good to read and I’ll be looking forward to book 10.
Another great DI Kelly Porter story. This time based around a killer and a Prison.
Lots of twits and turns and as always easy to read.
This is the ninth book in the Kelly Porter series, which just keeps improving. It's a really good series, one of my favourites, with believable characters and excellent storylines. Kelly has returned to work after maternity leave and is investigating the murders of two newly released prisoners, which throws up a web of corruption in Highton prison. The investigation causes tension in her relationship with Johnny as events spiral to a dramatic conclusion. I highly recommend this gritty series, set in the beautiful Lake District. Thanks to Net Galley for my ARC.
The DI Kelly Porter series of novels from Rachel Lynch have been a firm favourite of mine from the start, and Lying Ways is no exception. What sets these books apart is that they are not formulaic and the storylines reflect society's current issues. In this book the action centres around HMP Highton, and the prisoners and staff of it, all facing their own challenges. When a recently released prisoner is murdered in particularly nasty circumstances, DI Porter and her team investigate.
Running alongside this is Kelly Porter's role of a new mum, and her return to work whilst her partner takes on the bulk of the childcare duties. It is heartwarming to read that DI Porter struggles with all her roles, it would be easy to make her the ultimate super-mum, but that's not real life! Readers can often empathise with the balance between a high pressure job and the demands of family life.
I lapped up Lying Ways and was very upset to finish it. Be warned that you need to allow yourself plenty of time for the final scenes, as there is no way you'll be able to stop reading until the conclusion.
Thank you to #NetGalley for allowing me to read #LyingWays by #RachelLynch
This is the 9th book in the Detective Kelly Porter series and the best yet.
When a case overlaps with a local prison Kelly finds it difficult to get past the bureaucracy and red tape involved with the two services.
With two people found dead and the only connection their recent incarceration at the prison, Kelly is racing against time before someone else is killed. Then one of her team members is caught in a life or death situation. This book will keep you turning the pages.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ From me.
