In a post-apocalyptic world, Doom is left in charge of the kids in his camp when their parents leave to battle an unidentified threat. Compared to his werewolf sister and other kids who are molded from mud or jello, or have wings or five eyes, Doom is decidedly normal, and others question if he should be the leader. Even Doom himself doubts he can keep his crew safe. When an accident results in their camp burning down, they retreat to an old school. In this setting everyone’s special powers contribute to the group’s survival as they work together under Doom’s leadership and become a strong community. The book ends with a cliffhanger and readers will be anxious to find out what happens next. Graphic novel fans will love the action-filled panels and creative story. With their special powers and far-out features, the characters will appeal to middle grade readers. They’ll be cheering for the group to succeed and survive!
This was a cute, fun read. If I were a kid, I'd probably read it through once and enjoy it, but I don't know that I would have reread it. Maybe if/when a sequel came out to refresh my memory. I'm likely to order it for the library the month it comes out, unless my budget's looking too tight.
