if you are looking for fun cross stitch designs that are snarky and take the traditional sampler looks lightly -- get this book! Even if four-letter words are not your style, you'll find plenty of fun designs among the 50 here. Each design is photographed in full color against all kinds of cool vintage wallpaper. The chart follows, full color and on its own page. These charts are very easy to see.
i also loved that the directions at the beginning of the book were clear, easy to understand, and correct. Too many modern stitching books give incorrect or bad advice. I also liked that the book branched out from basic cross stitch on 14-count Aida to Backstitch, different threads, and different fabrics.
It's well worth buying for any stitcher.
I received a free copy from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
These patterns were clearly graphed, and I like that they were shown in the charted format as well as clear photographs to show just how they were expected to look. I had a blast first reading through them, then had to figure out which one was going to be first. These are great patterns, and range from quick to longer projects, but will definitely be a fun way to chill out.
I love me some good snark and this book has it!! I’m an avid crafter and have recently fallen back in love with cross stitch, there are so many great patterns in this book I want to make as gifts. I like that they are quick and doable but also unique with decorative elements. A must have for any sassy floss twister!!
I have done cross stitch before but am always looking for something a little more fun. This book was just what I was looking for and is super fun. I love how it has more adult designs and I have even started working on one to give to a friend. If you're into doing fun crafts this is one book that you need to add to your collection today!
This little book is packed full of 50 full colour cross-stitch charts. As you can probably tell from the cover they are word based patterns with sarcastic, quirky or swear-y sayings - not for anyone easily offended. This is definitely a modern take on cross stitch, introducing the craft to a new audience.
The book starts with a good introduction on how to cross stitch, including all the essentials for example what needles to use, what aida counts mean, how to start and end stitching and how to frame your work. All the charts have DMC thread numbers but as the author says, you can use what ever you have to hand in whatever colours you think would work. There are also instructions on how to personalise your projects in other ways, including charts for 5 different alphabets and 10 or so borders/flourishes you could use. The author also gives you a small blank grid that you could use to design your own chart.
This is a lovely little book for beginners or more advanced stitchers.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sasquatch Books for this ARC in return for an unbiased review.
This cross stitch book is great for amateurs and experts alike. The author has some great step-by-step guidelines on how to replicate their patterns, and then they share many patterns for hilarious sayings like, "Not Today, Satan." A great read, and I fully plan to purchase this for my sister for Christmas.
Absolutely love this!! Easy to read patterns and lots of options to make your own. I know what I make my girls for Christmas - lots of sass. I can't wait to start on those. Also love that most of the projects are smaller.
Thank you so much Netgalley for providing me with an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book s great for someone starting with cross stitch. It just lots of helpful tips and the patterns are great!
This little book is BIG in inspiration! It also helps to dismantle the belief that stitchers are quiet little grandmas, In fact, stitchers like myself are fierce and love patterns like the ones provided in this book. The author provides a brief "cross-stitch 101" at the beginning that's easy to follow. The patterns are perfect for any occasion you can think up (holidays, gifts for friends, work decor, etc) and are clearly diagrammed. I especially liked the alphabets provided at the end for endless DIY inspiration. If you're looking for a creative outlet and think cross-stitch might be it, this is the best place to start!
I received this e-book ARC of Super Subversive Cross Stitch: 50 Fresh as F*ck Designs by Julie Jackson through Net Galley from Sasquatch Books in exchange for a truthful review.
Things start off with some cross stitch basics and then lead into lots of patterns.
The patterns are pretty straightforward, mainly a funny/subversive saying surrounded by a simple, yet effective, border. The book even ends with alphabet samplers and some sample border patterns, so you can create your own personal subversive sayings in cross stitch!
I personally don't think I will reproduce some of the more off-color patterns which make colorful use of the F-word or those which deal with drinking culture. But I did find several of the patterns sarcastic, smile inducing and I wouldn't mind hanging up somewhere/gifting! (I'm definitely going craft up the "Spark Joy or Get Out" pattern:-)
***Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest review*** LOVE!!!! I will definitely be purchasing this when it comes out in book form.
These patterns are fantastic. They are well thought out and beautiful (snarky) but approachable for a beginning stitcher. I can't wait to stitch them all!
I have my daughter the first book written by Julie Jackson and it looks like this one will be a gift as well! Love the fresh ideas and the grid paper and fonts in the back (the cow 🐄 is a sweet touch too!). Beautifully photographed and presented, this will be a welcome addition to any subversive cross stitcher’s bookshelf out there!
Great book for the beginner or advanced stitcher. Easy to follow graphs and so many hilarious patterns to choose from. I've already chosen several that will make perfect gifts for friends and coworkers! Must have a sense of humor - full of swear words - and they're all funny! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for my free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This book presented some cute projects, but overall I found it a bit underwhelming. While I understand that this is a “sequel” so readers likely have basic cross stitch skills well in hand, the opening overview of techniques wasn't super beginner friendly. Some of the instructions would have been hard to decipher if I didn't know the basics already. That isn't necessarily a problem, assuming the reader knows this going in.
As for the projects, while the charts are very well done, the items themselves were a mix of really cheeky and sassy stuff alongside some phrases that just added the F-word to otherwise uninspired bon mots. I love the F-word, but it doesn't make something clever on its own.
Altogether, this was an OK book. There were enough projects that I liked that I am glad to have it in my library, but I am not sure I would recommend it out in the wild.
I asked for this book out of curiosity and the cover made me laugh. My background in needlepoint is pretty deep - I started cross stitch at 12, branched out into different types of needlepoint from there, and have made multiple projects in my (not going to tell you) years. I actually didn’t expect much more than a few basic patterns without explanation. I was completely wrong.
Okay, the bones of this book are actually helpful for beginners. There’s a solid section on why the author chooses the materials she does. All of the patterns use few colors and simple stitches. All patterns are in color instead of black and white. There are only cross stitches so it’s easy for a beginner to follow. There are fonts and borders in the back to make each project unique, if you wish. Overall, I love this book! One issue I had is that this was just for beginners. It would be nice to have an option for at least intermediate stitchers. Thanks to NetGalley for the advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Great fun. The author gives you lots of help getting started cross stitching if you're new to it and then gives you 50 patterns that say things like NOT TODAY, SATAN; SPARK JOY OR GET OUT; nope; and don't f*ck it up. The end also gives you patterns for letters in several fonts, plus patterns for things like borders. I found several I'd want for my house and several I'd want to make for friends. :)
I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for review.
Once again Julie Jackson kills it!
With this funny, sassy, not-your-grandma's cross stitch, sure to give anyone a double take!
Gift it to anyone crafty and salty, or keep it for yourself!
What an awesome collection of patterns! The information within the book is useful to both beginner and seasoned cross stitchers alike. With 50 patterns to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect project for anyone (or yourself!). Definitely can't wait to stitch up a few of these myself!
I was also lucky enough to get a review copy of Super Subversive Cross Stitch by Julie Jackson. While I'm not sure I would describe sweary sayings as "super subversive" these days, this is a fun, interesting book full of cross-stitch how to's, including how to design your own pieces. It's also beautifully presented, and very clear, perfect for those of us who have not done a lot of stitching.
It provides very clear guidance on everything from what you need to start, how to stitch and some ideas for using and displaying finished products. All round a useful, attractive book.
