Thank you to NetGalley and Gallery Books for providing the ARC.
This book was kind of a miss for me. I was intrigued by the premise, and that was what prompted me to request this book. However, I just wish there was a bit more to the story.
The pacing was slow - I felt like it dragged in a lot of places. I didn't particularly care for Brittany, as she grated on my nerves. And Edie was a constant presence that never really made sense. The romance was also pretty one note.
I'm sure some people will like this book, but I couldn't get into it the way I wanted.
Britney Lynn Snider is a good old Texas gal who is off to meet her Tinder date when she gets into a fatal car crash. While she is in a coma, she is waiting is Heaven’s waiting room, the Limbo Lounge. When her time finally comes, mean girl Edie jumps the line and takes Britney’s path to heaven. The souls running the lounge give her the option of living, but in socialite Edie’s body. There were quite a few laughs in the book, but the back and forth between the Limbo Lounge, where Edie is sent back to as punishment, and Edie’s family dealing with “amnesiac Britney/Edie took a long time to muddle through. There is a romance, but it felt like an afterthought. This was an enjoyable book, but ultimately left me unsatisfied without the ending. I received an advanced reader copy of this book from NetGalley for my honest review.
Brittany Lynn Snider leaves church heading to meet her tender date. She has lied to her mother where she is going and ends up wrecking her mother's minivan. Brittany is taking to the hospital and is in serious condition. She is placed in the waiting room with other patients waiting to move on or return to their bodies. Edie is a socialite and is trying to take anyone's place to get to heaven. She ends up knocking Brittany out of the way and ascends to heave only to be put in another waiting area. Brittany is given the choice to remain as a spirit working at the hospital or take over Edie's body. Edie is a glamours looking rich woman and Brittany has always been on the larger size. Brittany is told she will have all her memories and soul, but just inhabit Edie's body. Turns out Edie was trying to commit suicide and now Brittany is at the mental hospital in Michigan. She just wants to go home to Texas. Edie's parents don't understand the changes in their daughter. I thought this was a really cute fun read. I've has read several of Rachel Gibson's books.
This book was such a fun read! I laughed out loud, I cheered her on… quick and light and just what I was looking for!
I really enjoyed this one. It was different and I found it refreshing. Cute but not overdone. What would it be like? Try this one out, it just may suprise you! I was given a digital ARC by #netgalley and #GalleryBooks for an honest review. All opinions are mine.
Loved this one! So Cute! Love the story and the characters. I got also got a physical arc so will share a full review closer to pub day!
The premise was interesting but not original. Two women die and end up in the same waiting room. One is given the option of returning to earth but has to use the other's body. The remaining character is stuck in the waiting room, trying to ear her way to heaven. Hard decisions are made and life lessons are learned by both. I think that the characters could have been a bit more developed and less annoying.
Very funny, fun women’s fiction/romance.
Brittany Lynn Snider is on her way to meet a Tinder date when she crashes her mother’s minivan and wakes up in a place called the Limbo Lounge. There, she meets other people waiting to make the transition to the ever-after, but right now, she’s looking at her nearly lifeless body and wondering if she’ll live or die.
When her mortal body does in fact die, a devious socialite named Edie snatches her chance to move beyond (as if the all-knowing couldn’t figure this out). This gives Brittany the opportunity to go back to earth in the body of wealthy, skinny woman. She doesn’t know how she’ll do it, but eventually she’ll figure out a way to leave Michigan and befriend her mother back in small-town Texas in this new body.
Naturally, waking up in completely new circumstances takes some adjusting to. Though I have nothing in common with either Brittany or Edie, the fish-out-of-water feeling is familiar to us all, and Gibson navigates this deftly.
Even though this is a book about lives being taken too soon, it’s never sad or maudlin. It’s an uplifting story of what makes us who we are regardless of appearance or financial circumstance.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to review this novel, which RELEASES APRIL 19, 2022.
Cute premise and entertaining read. Hard to like the mc but overall decent enough to finish reading it. Is it memorable? No. But definitely not the worst.
I am a past fan of Rachel Gibson. I have read almost all of her books. This is a way more different type of book, and not in a good way for me.
The main character starts off as a walking caricature and then switches bodies with someone from the Midwest. (I sh*t you not. Yeehaw) It didn’t work, and I’m devastated because I waited a long long (long) time for a new Rachel Gibson book.
What an interesting read! If you’ve ever wanted to see what your life might be like if you were able to live someone else’s life, then you might enjoy this book. It’s not all fun and games though as some difficult subjects are covered, but it will definitely make you take stock of what’s important and what you can be grateful for in your own life.
Interesting premise but I disliked the small town Texas girl Brittany Lynn too much to enjoy the book. She was as shallow and closed minded as the woman who took her path to the afterlife. I struggled to finish and was hoping for a more redemptive finish but was let down.
Thank you to NetGalley and Gateway Books for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to Gallery Books and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. I'm not typically much of a "chick lit" reader, but this was really fun and entertaining! I enjoyed her book "How Lulu Lost Her Mind" too.
Wow I loved this? So many neat The Good Place vibes but with so much less repetition and more golf swings. Really, really enjoyed this! I also loved the dual story with that of old-Edie/new-Marfa being told alongside the grander story of the protagonist.
This book gives off "Drop Dead Diva" vibes with a twist in this fish-out-of-water tale after two opposite women swap places and find their purpose in life. It's full of very well-written and compelling language that kept me yearning to keep reading.
Content warning: mental illness, self-harm
This book was cute and fun and all, BUT IT'S A CLOSED DOOR ROMANCE!!!! I DID NOT READ THROUGH ALL THIS TEXAS DEEP-DIVE AND GOD-WORSHIPING CHRISTIANITY BUSINESS FOR NO SMUTTTTTTT!!!!!!! But other than that, I did find both FMCs a bit annoying at times, but they were able to pull themselves together and I found the ending to be quite fitting and cute.
I love a good Texan girl - glitter, big hair, over the top... When I read the premise, I was all in! Take an early death of this Tean girl, and put her in someone else's body - sound like fun!
Well, unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations. But let's start with the good.
The premise was awesome and the story was good.
The writing style was good - it was clear, concise and I could picture it all.
Now for the not-so-good.
It felt like it took literally half the book to start the body switch. The beginning of the book was just slow to get going. I kept thinking "any time now".
I also did not really connect to the main character. I wanted to, but felt like something was missing - that special "it" factor that you makes me love a character and a book.
Overall, I did fnish the book, whicih is a plus. I am infamous for not finishing a book when it doens't hold my attention - I mean, there are so many books out there, why waste time. However, would I recommend it to my friends? Unfortunately not.
I do want to thank the author, the publisher and #netgalley for the ARC which (obviously) did not impact my review.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
Brittany Lynn Snider is a Texas girl through and through. She loves her state, her parents, the church, and of course - big hair and glitter! She lies to her mom and heads from her tiny hometown to El Paso to meet up with a Tinder date. Along the way, a texting and driving incident happens and Brittany ends up in the hospital hanging onto life by a thread. As she watches from the Limbo Lounge - will she live or will she die? As Brittany starts to pass into the afterlife, a snooty socialite named Edie, literally climbs Brittany's body and takes her place in the afterlife.
Brittany wakes up in Edie's body - what the ......????? Why is she in a mental facility? What happened to Edie prior to her stay here. Brittany needs to resume Edie's life as Edie but has all her memories from her own life and none of Edie's.
As she navigates this life - what does she want? What should she do? And where is the actual Edie?
This book was so entertaining. I had trouble putting it down as I wanted to know what happened next and where was Edie? Did she make it to heaven?
not my favorite Rachel Gibson book, that's for sure. The premise was cute but it took a long long time and too many chapters to get to the actual plot.
I really wanted to like this book. The fantastical afterlife vibe, the freaky-Friday type switch, the childhood nemesis turned lover angle. It had so much potential. And yet, it never delivered. The book spent so much time setting up the switch, and then rushed through the second half of the book leaving me a little confused with some of the storyline wrap ups and generally pretty frustrated.
