When Lily decided to change positions and take on a teaching position in a private home she never expected life to take such an unexpected turn. From the start, Edward was smitten with Lily and after a fast courtship, she found herself the stepmom to the eight-year-old she was hired to teach. From day one of her new marriage, she was bogged down in mysteries that surrounded the family.
This book is full of twists and layers of mystery. I found this to be an interesting read and really enjoyed it, although, in some places, I found the narrative a little dry, the story moved fast and kept my attention.

Wow. I could NOT put this one down. Perfect for fans of B. A. Paris, this is a purely addictive domestic thriller about a woman who marries her wealthy employer and starts digging into his dead first wife's secrets once she learns about the previous couple's suspicious past.

Why is her husband and his son living in this big isolated mansion? What secrets is the quiet little boy hiding?

This book had this rare thing where I found myself experiencing the same emotions along with the protagonist. It occasionally switches to the past in a way that lets the pacing run smoothly. The end is so intense it will have you at the edge of your seat until the chapter ends.

I've read two of this author's books (the first one being the Ex-Wife , which ending absolutely blew my mind) and now I want to read more!

Lily has just married Edward whom she met when teaching his young son Noah as a private tutor. Edward is fifteen years older than Lily and has two older daughters who no longer live at home but who appear totally funded by the bank of dad. When Lily goes to tuck Noah up after the wedding he confesses that he “remembers everything” but won’t say quite what. Edward doesn't allow any talk about Claire, his first wife who died after an anaphylactic shock, saying it will upset Noah as he was too young to have any memories about his mother. When Edward goes out Lily discovers an old photo album and shows a picture to Noah as he mentioned he would like one of his mother. Edward vehemently denies that there are any pictures of Claire anywhere. None of his relatives turned up at the wedding, something Lily is now finding even odder despite one of his older girls explaining it away as “complicated”. What really happened to Claire and what is Edward hiding?
Ooh!! I love books like this- ones you quickly get into and there is a tension and an air of mystery early on to tempt you to the pages and then gets ever more complex with twists and turns and whom to believe. A gripping, page-turning thrill of a read. Do you trust him- or don’t you? A wonderful rollercoaster, a fabulous plot and a great ending.

The Second Marriage by Jess Ryder is a gripping domestic thriller that you won't be able to put down. The story revolves around Lily, who is about to marry Edward, a widower with a young stepson. It seems like she's about to have her happily ever after. Then, her stepson tells her that he knows that his mother is still alive. What could this mean? Is the stepson making things up or is his mother actually alive? Why hasn't Edward mentioned anything about his first wife being alive? And can she even trust Edward?

Here is a romantic excerpt from the very beginning of Chapter 1:

"'Lily, will you marry me?'
He was down on one knee, holding out a tiny black box, the lid hinged open. A beautiful diamond ring was wedged into a white satin cushion. I let out a gasp and put my hand to my chest. Edward looked up at me, smiling. The corners of his mouth and eyes were etched with fine laughter lines. His grey hair shone in the candlelight like polished steel.
...
'Please say something,' he said. 'This is getting embarrassing.'
'Yes, yes, of course I'll marry you.'
His eyes lit up and his shoulders dropped. The whole restaurant burst into applause."

Overall, The Second Marriage is an unputdownable domestic thriller with a twist that you'll never see coming. It will appeal to fans of B.A. Paris and Kiersten Modglin. Once I started this book, I could not put it down. I looked forward to reading what happened next and unwinding the mysterious web about Edward's first wife. I feel as though I've read this plot before, for example, in Jane Eyre, but I was blown away by the ending of this book. I absolutely did not see the twist coming. I enjoyed reading this book a lot, and I'm giving it 5 explosive stars! If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of domestic thrillers, I highly recommend that you check out this book when it comes out in November!

What Came Before…?
When Lily agrees to marry the widowed Edward and become step mother to his young son she has no idea as to what came before. Despite warnings, Lily felt that it was the right thing to do and that it wasn’t too soon. So, what did come before Lily and has she been wrong about Edward from the start? Engaging psychological suspense with a compelling premise.

A fun read.
Lily is going to marry Edward who's a widower but fell for her too quickly and they got married soon. The problem is he or no one in his family wants to talk about Clara, his first wife. He has two daughters, Tara and Georgia who live away and a small son, Noah. Somehow they all accepted Lily. But soon creepy things start to happen. Noah is very sure that his mummy is writing letters to him and one day she'll come to get him. No one from Edward's side came to attend their marriage. She sees a photo album who's now disappeared. Now she's sure that he's hiding something.
What I Liked? :-
1 The plot.
2 The characters and narration.
3 The midpoint twist which I wasn't expecting.
What I Don't Like? :-
1 The ending, it could be more crisp.
2 The length, some scenes were really not compelling, Edward's past scenes. The author starts telling about his past in the second part when the reader only wants to know what's going to be it's ending. The past was a bit tiresome.
I loved the characters of Edward, Tara, Georgia and Lily. Other characters like Noah, Fran, Clara were good.
Overall it's a good read. This author's fans will definitely love it.
Thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me an advanced copy of this psychological thriller.

Wow this is another unputdownable book which once it has its claws in me I couldn’t stop reading. This is such a twisted story about a new bride and her confusion when her step son starts to claim his dead mother is actually anything but. As she starts to unravel the truth can she actually trust the man she has just married and how much about his history does she actually know. Is this a young child with mental health issues or is something much sinister going on. I loved it!

The Second Marriage by Jess Ryder is another addictive read from an author who has claimed a firm spot on my must-read list. This one, like all of Ms Ryder's previous novels, had me tearing through the pages, trying to slot together the pieces of a complex and tantalizing puzzle.

Lily meets Edward when she answers his ad seeking a tutor for his home-schooled son, Noah. Becoming close to the young boy and his widowed father, Lily soon finds herself accepting Edward's marriage proposal and becoming a stepmother to the sheltered and insecure Noah. But when the child confides that his mother is, in fact, still alive, Lily begins to question just how well she really knows the man she has married.

This is a compulsive read that hooked me immediately and kept me guessing throughout. I look forward to reading whatever comes next from the talented Ms Ryder. 4.5 stars

Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for an ARC.
