Excellent suspense novel. Beverly is a hard working mother with many secrets. The secrets Beverly keeps are all being kept so her son Riley stays safe. When Riley starts getting expensive gifts in the mail Beverly thinks they are from her estranged boyfriend that she is trying to break up with. What Beverly doesn’t know is the gifts are from a different person who could cause all Beverly’s secrets to be exposed and put Riley in danger. Fast paced thriller that is impossible to put down.
I really enjoyed The Mother's Fault, a twisty page turner that hooked me from the start. A perfect read for the upcoming Fall and one that I will definitely recommend to others. I had a prediction of the end and I was pleasantly surprised that I was wrong, so it will keep you guessing!
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for the ARC!
The Mother's Fault by Nicole Trope is a highly recommended novel of psychological suspense.
Beverly is a single mother of eight-year-old Riley who works hard to keep to keep their lives running smoothly. What most people don't know is that Beverly has a secret, a secret that she is sure if anyone knows it will threaten their relationship. This is why she broke up with her boyfriend, Ethan, because he was asking questions she didn't want to answer. Now Riley is starting to get gifts dropped off at their mailbox. Beverly is sure they are from Ethan, but the card isn't signed. She tries to contact Ethan to thank him, but telling him to stop sending gifts, however, he is not responding to her messages and the gifts are coming. At the same time someone is watching Beverly and Riley, someone who has unknown plans for them. And then Riley disappears from the backyard one evening, and she contacts the police, which could change their lives forever.
The narrative is told through the point-of-view of Beverly, Riley, and an unnamed individual. Riley is the only truly trustworthy narrator, but he is limited by his age and knowledge. Beverly and the unnamed narrator both are less reliable because they admittedly have secrets. It is clear that Beverly loves Riley, and wants the best for him, but she is also terrified of having her secret exposed and the unnamed narrator is seemingly determined to do just that.
The plot and fast pace of the story will be what holds your attention and keeps you reading. There is a great deal of suspension of disbelief required, especially in the second half of the novel where we learn who the unnamed narrator is and all of Beverly's secret. The big reveal of the secret and everything revolving around it was a bit over-the-top unbelievable as far as everyone's actions and I will admit to some eye-rolling over it. But, as mentioned, the novel did hold my attention throughout and I wanted to find out what really happened. 3.5 rounded up

Wow - this is the kind of book where you start reading and think you have a pretty good handle on things, then, WHAM! A twist gets thrown in there and knocks you off your feet. For the first third of the book, I thought I knew pretty well where things were going, but boy was I wrong, and I loved reading on and seeing were this was all going!
The central conflict/mystery of the book was really intriguing and I was hooked, trying to figure out what was going on. The book moves between the past and the present, as the story is fully revealed and I was really intrigued by both stories. The author does a great job of weaving things together and creating a well-flowing narrative. I really enjoyed it..
Like I said, there's plenty of twists in there and several red herrings that the author sprinkles in to mix things up, which really kept me guessing until the very end. What I liked is that Beverly, the main character, can't really seem to trust anyone except herself and her neighbor, Sam (a great character!), so there's a bit of a paranoid atmosphere, which adds to the suspense. It works really well.
Overall, if you like domestic suspense or just a good thriller, pick this one up, you won't be disappointed!
This is a page-turning thriller. Things aren't as they appear. The pace is slow until about halfway through the race, when it increases up. In this twist-filled read, I enjoyed the author's writing approach. The characters are realistic and well-developed. This is a narrative that, in my opinion, is best read blind. I could tell you so much more, but that would only serve to spoil the experience for you. The author has written yet another wonderful book.
I always enjoy books by Nicole Trope, she has become an author that I actively seek because every single book I’ve read has been quick, twisty and interesting. I highly recommend any book by this author and look forward to reading her next books!
Losing a child is a parent’s worst fear. Beverly looks outside and her son Riley is missing. Did he wander off or is something more sinister going on? Beverly fears it’s the latter considering all the secrets she’s been hiding. This is a great story! Highly enjoyable read!
Wow what a book! The description had me hooked immediately and the book did not disappoint. It had fantastic characters and was unputdownable with the twists keeping me on the edge of my seat. This is my third book by Nicole Trope and they have all been fantastic - She has definitely become a go to author for me.
Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture for my ARC.
Thanks Netgalley and the Publisher. Not sure what to write as a review for this as I really did not like the characters and found the storyline hard going.
For days, Riley has been receiving presents left in their mailbox. Inreasingly more expensive presents, with no note, other than to let Riley know the presents are for him. His mom, Beverly, is convinced they are from Ethan, the boyfriend she just had to let go of because she was afraid she was becoming too close to him. While Beverly's calls and texts to Ethan go unanswered, she becomes frustrated and worried, wondering what he is planning exactly. While Beverly fixes spaghetti for supper, Riley goes outside to sit in his treehouse with his Ipad and play. When Beverly goes to call him in for supper, Riley is missing.
This book was good but it frustrated me a little. It is told in multiple viewpoints. I noticed that some chapters had Beverly's name over them and some had Riley's, and some didn't have anyone's name, so I thought that meant those were just the storyline itself....not anyone's viewpoint in particular. Wrong. The chapters that don't have anyone's name are actually a third person's viewpoint. I was so confused after a few chapters I had to go read some reviews to find out what was going on. So I really did not like that. I felt like they should have been marked somehow to let you know it was someone else's viewpoint. Then there was a twist at the end that was so crazy I had to re-read the chapter twice to make sure i understood it. Maybe I am just having a slow couple of days, but this was a good book overall, and I would recommend it.
New to this author but I think I need a break from this genre; it was decent enough, definitely a beach or plane read and for fans of Lisa Jewell, I think this would be a good alternative.
So this is the second book I have read from Nicole Trope and after reading the Family Across the Street, I was excited to read this book.
Plot:- Beverly and Rylie are mother and son. Beverly had recently broken up with her boyfriend Ethan. Soon someone starts sending expensive gifts to Rylie and Beverly thinks that it was Ethan. Meanwhile, at Rylie's school, there's a new teacher named Mr. Benton. Then there's a woman, who is stalking Beverly and Rylie, determined to get Rylie.
Writing:- The story is told from the perspectives of Rylie, Beverly and the woman who had dark history and is stalking Beverly, believing that Rylie is her own son and out to seek revenge on Beverly. The start was a bit slow but slowly, by the middle of the book, it gained momentum and soon became fast paced with twists and turns. Though it was slightly predictable, the slight twist at the end was completely unexpected.
Characters:- Beverly seems to be a devoted who seemed to be hiding secret. Rylie adores his mother and is a feist kid--he is one of my favorite characters in the book.
Overall:- This was a good thriller--will keep you hooked into the story and unputdownable, making you want to read more. Worth five stars!
Thank you to NetGalley for the arc!
Really just wasn’t all that impressed with this one. There were many spelling and grammar mistakes, the story had some holes in it, and the ending made me believe there will probably be a second one after this. Was okay.
I’ve been a big fan of Nicole Trope for years now and was so excited to receive an ARC of The Mother’s Fault. I started reading it yesterday and have finished it in less than a day. Immediately I was hooked and captivated until the very ending. What I love most is the characters. They’re perfectly written to tell a dramatic story. This book deserves more than 5 stars!
Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture and Nicole Trope for an ARC to review.
An engaging page turner full of plot twists, you'd think you know but you won't!
You really don't:)
When I read the blurb I thought this sounds like a good read. Well it wasn't. It was a brilliant, cliff hanger of a read. The plot was so clever, so exciting, so dark. I just kept turning the pages desperate to find out what was going to happen next, enthralled from the first page to the last. A quarter of the way through I figured it out. Wrong. Half way through I definitely had it figured out. Wrong again. I didn't get it until the very end.
I would like to thank the reviewer who let me know Scottie, the dog, survived. That saved me reading the end of the book first to make sure, which would have been a travesty when every page builds up the tension.
I'm cooking spaghetti, his favourite, while he plays in the garden. But when I lookup, he's gone, I call the police, my hands are shaking so much that I hit the wrong digits twice. When the police turn up, I'm trapped in a web of my lies. I've hidden the truth from eight year old Riley, mu little boy who loves climbing trees and always has scraped knees. I have hidden my secret from everyone.
Beverley raises her young son Riley who frequently thinks about his dad. But then Riley goes missing from his backyard.
This is a suspense filled read. Things are not what they seem. The pace is slow until around the half way mark where it picks up it's pace. I like the authors writing style in this twist filled read. The characters are well developed and believable. This is a story that I think you are better to read blind. There's so much I could tell you but I would only spoil it for you. This is another fantastic book by the author.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #NicoleTrope for my ARC of #TheMothersFault in exchange for an honest review.
Excellent book! This was a can not put down book. It starts a little slow, but soon enough, you are caught up in it. Great characters, lots of twists and turns.
Thank you to netgalley, the publisher and mostly the author for providing me with the ARC, and the great story.
