I was really disappointed in this book. I had high hopes and they fell flat. I'm sure someone out there loved this book but it was not for me.
I’m not sure how I feel about this one still. I liked it while I was reading it but I found it very forgettable. I did really like the characters and the story line.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Children's for giving me a free eARC of this book to read in exchange for my review!
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me access to the advanced copy of this book to read.
Mario was hoping for a low key prom night before graduation. He was driving his date hope from an after party when everything changes for him. He sees the prom queen on the side of the road, murdered.
Before he has the chance to check on her police arrive. He claims he hadn’t seen her since leaving the party. The police later arrest him. Through a web of lies the police slowly unfold the true story of what happened to Mariebelle and her secret life. Things from the past, grudges come out of hiding.
This was a fun take on a murder mystery paired with prom night. I like the layers this story had as we slowly unpeeled what really happened. The one downside for me was I felt there were way too many instances of lies from Mario. He needed to just tell the truth sooner, but then again that is how a teen would act so I can’t blame him too much.
Eh? 3 stars. Was just a basic YA 'horror' story. I do love the cover though so I'll keep my physical copy. I wish I had loved this more.
A murder mystery thriller that kept me guessing, and I couldn’t believe the reveal when it was shared. Fans of Karen McManus, Holly Jackson, and Kara Thomas will want to pick this one up!
The mark of a really good book for me is if I will sacrifice sleep to read it, and I stayed up well past my bedtime reading this one! I'm not saying it's a literary masterpiece or anything, but I definitely was flying through it, dying to know 'who dunnit'! I haven't read many great YA mysteries lately, but I think the tides are shifting! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an e-arc in exchange for an honest review.
It was quite an addictive read because you wanted to know what was going to happen but it was also very simple. You can easily guess the plot twists and revelations coming. This novel is written in multiple point of views, which is interesting because you get to know more about each characters and the story but then I did not get attached to any of the characters because you don’t really get to- there are too many characters to meet.
A Night To Die For is a twisty thriller where a prom queen is found dead and the prom king is the main suspect. It sounded really interesting and I couldn't wait to get into it.
When I did read it, I came away from the story with mixed feelings. Now I generally do love thrillers and this is one is classed as YA, but i felt like in a way it was a bit too safe for a thriller. One element it seemed to really struggle with was bleeding the story through multiple point of views as I felt that there was some which was not really needed. However, I did really enjoy getting to know some of the characters such as Lucas who wanted to discover the truth no matter what.
I actually enjoyed the plot and the twists within it and I think the author did a great job in developing the characters even the one who actually killed the prom Queen. The whole whodunnit side of the plot was well handled as multiple characters had their reasons.
Overall, I enjoyed the YA Thriller so I give it 3 stars
This would normally be right up my alley. I love a good thriller with romance so I thought it would be a definite 4 star or higher. However I struggled with all the multiple POVs, text/chat language and the overall silliness of it. It was more vapid than I'd hoped so I ended up not finishing it. My students will probably love it, though.
I really wanted to like this one. It was set in the Pacific Northwest, it's written by a librarian, it has all of the elements I would like to see. Unfortunately, the dialogue fell a little flat for me. I can't say that I am entirely up on the new, hip lingo, but I do know that teens have shortened "Instagram" to "Insta," so some of the language felt like an adult trying to use a teen voice, and it didn't come through as authentic. It's a quick read with an interesting plot, so I anticipate it will circulate once I get it in the library.
Solid 3 star read. This book was okay, with a quick enough pace to keep me interested in reading until the end to discover who committed the murder. It wasn’t exactly what I’d thought, though. Based on the blurb, I expected a lot more thriller, whereas this was more whodunit. That being said, I did like the multiple perspectives, especially the inclusion of the adult chapters, which is something I don’t think I’ve seen before in a YA mystery. Didn’t love the ending, and there could have been more actual clues for the reader to solve the mystery as well. Overall, a quick and easy read.
The plot: the prom queen is dead. Standing right next to her is the prom king.
This book includes letters, newspaper articles and texts that are a nice touch.
It was an entertaining mystery I couldn’t put down.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest, personal review. This book was not for me. I tried to get into it because the premise sounded good but I couldn't even finish it. Mario finds the body of the prom queen, Maribelle, on the side of the road after having a prom that wasn't the best. He ends up charged with her murder although there are others with means and motive to have committed the crime. The killer was predictable and there wasn't enough twists and turns to keep me involved. Might be a better read for someone else but not for this reader.
I ended up buying and reading this book and i really enjoyed it. It was entertaining and definitely had me expecting some Carrie shit to go down. I enjoyed it
Let me start off this review by saying I’m super confused about the book’s blurb. A majority of it is accurate, but the book is not a romance nor a horror. I have no idea why it’s tagged like that, because it is 100% a classic YA murder mystery/thriller novel (think Karen M. McManus, Diana Urban, etc.)
Now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s talk about the book!
A Night to Die For is sure to pull you in with its intriguing premise and its eye-catching cover. I know that’s the main reason why I signed up for this tour! The book starts off with a boy named Mario (who happened to be prom king) finding the prom queen’s dead body in a ditch. Being the easiest–and maybe even the most suspicious–suspect, he’s quickly arrested while the police attempt to gather incriminating evidence. We then follow several characters (points of view change per chapter) as the events unfold.
Something that I really enjoyed that this novel did was the fact that it included adult POVs in the narrative. Often, mystery/thrillers like these only follow the POVs of the teenagers involved, and I felt like the addition of multiple adults (including parents and police) was a nice addition. I also really enjoyed the fact that each chapter was short, making the book feel even more fast-paced and suspenseful.
Unfortunately, this is where I have to explain why I rated it 3 starts. I was really enjoying the book for the first half (if not more). Around that point, I began to get a bit annoyed with the characters for keeping unnecessary secrets from each other and the police, and just overall being really sketch. Then I got to the 90% point and the plot kind of fell apart for me. I am used to authors making a small portion of the plot reliant on characters being shortsighted and foolish, but there was just too much of that in this one to make it believable for me.
OOOH OOH OOH! I wasn't sure what I was getting into when I was approved for this book. It was the cover that drew me in. That being said...I really, REALLY enjoyed this book! It gave me 1980/1990 High School thriller vibes and I loved it!
Thank you to netgalley for providing an e-galley for review. A Night to Die For starts on prom when Mario finds the prom queen dead on the side of the road. What follows is the story of what happened, how they got there, small town secrets and a dash of mental illness. This was unputdownable.
"prom night is supposed to be the best night of your life."
"it's not the night you're supposed to die."
top five reasons to read this book!
• it switches between every characters point of view, it was so interesting to see what was going through everybody's heads.
• none of the point of views were boring and they all helped to tell this incredible story.
• this book was super fast paced and i read the majority of it in one sitting!
• the characters were all well thought out and had great depth, i was really invested in all their storylines and i can't say i truly disliked any of them.
• THE COVER IS SO SO COOL. i know you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover but how can you not when this cover looks so cool...
thank you so much tbrbeyondtours for a copy of this book:)
