What did I just read!?! I enjoy all types of reads from the serious to the outlandish. Unlikable characters don't stop me from enjoying a story, as long there's something relatable about said characters. By the time I was finished, I cared nothing about the story, the characters, the situations, etc. On top of that the writing was disjointed and sometimes confusing. I couldn't wait to finish this book. This wasn't my first read by the author. The few books I've read, I've enjoyed. I don't know what happened with this one.

Somebody’s Home by Kaira Rouda is the story of two families who have one house in common. Julie has left her wealthy and negligent husband and moves to a suburb, which causes major problems with her teenage daughter. The previous owners of Julie’s new home are a pastor and his family. As part of the sale contract, the pastor’s adult son Tom will remain in the small cottage in the home’s backyard for a few extra days. Tom does not wish to leave his family home to strangers and refuses to move. And there the trouble begins and the tension will progressively build until the very end. The novel’s storyline is original and well-developed. The characters are troubled, flawed and interesting, making this a worthwhile read. This is my first book written by Kaira Rouda but I would not hesitate to read more. I highly recommend Somebody’s Home. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley and the author for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Slow starter but kept with it. Midway through picked up. A pastor and his wife decide to sell their home and leave with two out of three of his children. The oldest one Tom lives in a guest house and refuses to move out. He is a very to himself type.
A mother and her teen daughter move in by themselves. The mother has left her husband who is narcissistic and wants to give the illusion of a happy family which they are not. After the mother has enough she and her daughter, Jess move into the pastors old house. Jess meets the pastor's
son Tom and is falls for him. They both have problems of their own and they are not easy ones. She gets caught up in some trouble after a night of drinking and Tom wants paybacks on his dad. Thanks NetGalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
The premise of Somebody’s Home seemed intriguing, which is what drew me in. However, the book’s premise and the storyline itself didn’t quite deliver and the multiple storylines (which I usually enjoy) didn't work out for me.
This was a pretty good read. It was a.slow beginning and a pretty good mystery. It was not my favorite by her.
What I loved about this book was the characters. Rouda does a great job of creating ones you love to hate, which so often goes against the author, but Rouda is an expert at it. Otherwise, the book was your typical mystery/thriller, but a good read all the same
I enjoyed "Somebody's Home' by Kaira Rouda. This book is told from different characters' points of view and kept me interested until the end. Julie is starting over with her daughter, but it's not what she expected.
I've read other books by this author and loved them. But this one just fell short and I didn't care much for it. It was hard to connect with the characters because I found most to be annoying. The ending was okay but overall the book was just too over the top, plot-wise. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the advanced reader copy.
Somebody’s Home started off really good and had a great build up and seemed to me kinda rushed for the ending. Julie was super fake and knew it with a spoiled daughter Jess and a marriage in the rocks . Julie moves her daughter and tries to start over in her own home but first there’s Tom to get rid of. Maybe I expected something different and wanted more then just a rushed ending
This book seemed very over the top for me. I did not connect with alot of the characters, and with so much going on it was really hard to keep on track of eveything. There isnt much going on in this, but it is rather fast paced, and i did get through it pretty fast.
Julie Jones has left her suffocating marriage. With her teenage daughter, Jess, she’s starting over. Their new house in Oceanside is the first step toward a new life. Even if it does come with the unexpected. The previous owners, a pastor and his wife, have left something—or rather someone—behind…
THis was more domestic suspense, the beginning of the story really did pull me in, but i wasnt very invested all the way through.
Also i suggest looking up trigger warnings for this book before diving in.
This is a hard book to put down. Julie got out of a bad marriage and she and her high school daughter leave their luxury home and move to a former minister's house. The minister is leaving his church, Julie's husband gets into trouble and takes his daughter with him. The minister leaves his son in the guest house with instructions to move out in 48 hours. A true five star read.
This one started off good, but sadly didn't live to expectations.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas and Mercer for the ARC

I could tell almost immediately that this writing style and characterization was not for me. I should have stopped earlier in the book but held out for hope.
I do not know if this author is from Los Angeles or Southern California or visited there once on a trip to Disneyland but one of the authors characters which we spend a fair amount of time with, narrating and talking to, is built to be a stereotypical California mom.
And the references don’t end with that character. There’s also talk of farm workers and coastal kids versus valley kids. It’s all just too much.
And then you have Tom and Roger, two sad male characters, which have been written almost as horribly as Julie.
There was absolutely nothing to hold onto that was positive. I didn’t care about the story, which by the way hadn’t even started formulating by chapter 19, and the characters were deplorable.
Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer, Thomas & Mercer for the advanced copy!
Somebody's Home
Kaira Rouda, author
This was my first book by this author. I was very disappointed, as I had high expectations. The book had so many characters, it was hard to tell who was coming and going. The book was slow to begin. It did pick up and I was curious to see where the author would take the story. All the characters finally came together, and the ending was very explosive. I was sad that the author chose to kill off one of the characters. I found him very redeemable.
After reading some of the other reviews, I understand there are other books by this author that are quite good. Thus, I'll seek out those books, if my library has them, and I will read them. Otherwise, I won't be reading more from this author.
I was gifted an advanced reader copy from Netgalley, and the publisher. This is my humble opinion and I leave this review voluntarily.
A former trophy wife named Julie leaves her controlling husband in order to start a new life with her daughter Jess. Julie buys a house and she and Jess move in. There’s just one problem: the former owner’s son, a neo-Nazi incel, no less, is still living in the carriage house on the property and he refuses to leave. From reading other reviews, I had great expectations that I would love this book. Unfortunately, between improbable plotlines and multiple narrators, it seemed to me to try to be too many things to too many different kinds of readers and failed at pretty much all of them. Having heard good things about Ms. Rouda’s other books, I will likely give one of them a try, but unfortunately Somebody’s Home just wasn’t my kind of book.
I agree with some of the other reviewers on this. I liked the short chapters. I didn't like the characters. I kept reading though because I wanted to see how it ended and came together. And I'm glad I did. Loved the ending. The last 1\4 of the book was the best!
My biggest point of contention with this novel is that nothing about it was believable, and I found all the characters to be awful. I didn't care what happened to any of them because they all sucked.
I received an advance copy. All thoughts are my own.
I did not finish this. I didn’t really care for it. I’m sorry. I won’t be able to give a good enough review. I’m hoping to pick it back up in the future and enjoy it more next time.
This by far is probably my favorite Rouda book. I'm pretty sure that I've read them all. I've definitely seen an improvement in her story telling over the years, she just gets better and betteraa
Way too many characters in this psychological thriller. I hate when I can’t keep track of who is who, I’m horrible with names. Only liked one of the girls- sandi.
