Lily Atwood has the perfect life, a seven year old daughter Rowan, a career as a television reporter, lots of money and fame. Her hashtag is #PerfectLily. But what the fans don't know about are the secrets in Lily's past.
One secret is the father of her daughter. Lily has been able to avoid talking about it so far by claiming privacy is necessary for the safety of her daughter. But she knows the time is coming when her daughter's questions about her father will become more insistent and she will have to share the truth.
The biggest secret though is that of her sister Cassie. Cassie disappeared twenty years ago when she was a freshman at college and Lily was just a small child. A huge investigation discovered nothing. Cassie just was there one day and the next completely off the face of the earth. Had she been kidnapped? Had she run away? Was she alive somewhere or dead within a few days of the disappearance? Lily had lived with those questions as long as she could remember but even with all her journalistic resources had never come any closer to answers.
But that may be about to change. Someone is sending Lily flowers without a signature. She is getting phone calls from a man who insists he knows everything about Cassie's disappearance and is ready to talk about it. Is he real or a stalker who wants to get close to Lily? Is he the man who stole Cassie and now ready to take Rowan's mother away from her also?
This thriller was fast paced and intriguing. The story is told through interlocking chapters of the past and the present and in the voices of Lily, Cassie and Lily's producer, Greer. The mysteries of the long ago crimes are fully revealed with surprises for the reader along the way. I listened to this novel and the narrator was perfect. This book is recommended for thriller readers.
This is my second HPR book and this one is my favorite of the two. I love a good domestic thriller, especially when it involves family, more specifically sisters!
I enjoyed the twists and definitely didn’t see the major one coming toward the end. There were some unlikable characters and one in particular I found truly annoying and frustrating, but that character was supposed to be that way.
I did much prefer the plot to the characters in this book.
Overall, a good read and would recommend it to those looking for a mystery thriller.
Thank you Netgalley and McMillan Audio for this advance listener copy in exchange for my honest review.
I started this book last year in print version and ended up giving up about halfway through because I just didn't like it. I decided to give it another shot because I do not like to leave a book unfinished. This time, I tried the audiobook version. I still didn't like it, but this time I finished it.
This story was a jumbled mess. It was narrated by three different people and one of those was in the first person, the other two were third person. That was the first thing I didn't like about it. Well, the story got so far fetched and disjointed that I actually found myself giggling in spots. It was just not my cup of tea. The characters were all awful. I didn't connect with any of them. It just didn't do it for me. I was disappointed in this book because it came recommended by a good friend. I just didn't like it.
The audio was average. Nothing special. I'm going to revise my previous one star rating and give this two stars because I did end up finishing it.
i think it is challenging to write characters in thrillers that are not dislikable? kind of like the characters in horror movies that you are yelling at because they are so often just unbelievably dumb? this was a perfect example of that.
I have really been enjoying psychological thrillers lately and now I can add this one to my list of likes.
From the outside Lilly had a perfect life, but kept many hidden secrets. Her sister Cassie went missing when she was a young child and never returned. Now there is someone trying to reveal Lilly;s secrets and what she thought was true, may not be anymore.
I enjoyed the fast paced storyline. Overall it was a good book and I look forward to reading another book by Hank Philliippi Ryan.
Her Perfect Life by Hank Phillippi Ryan is a strong domestic thriller with all of the important points met to be a good read. While not mind blowing, it was entertaining and interesting. Enjoy!
A book about family, sisters, tragedy, and that life is not always what it seems from the outside. I absolutely love the narration of this book and while the story was slightly far-fetched I found it to be very entertaining. I would recommend this for anyone looking for a thriller with a few twists and turns but nothing too heavy.
I listened to the audiobook version of this book and really enjoyed the narrator. Lily and Cassie are sisters living with their single mom. Cassie is eighteen and goes off to college leaving seven year old Lily at home with her mother. After a series of unfortunate events, Cassie feels she cannot go back home without endangering her mother and sister. This loss and the failure of law enforcement to find Cassie is something the family does not recover from. Lily grows up without her sister and becomes a famous television reporter, but the unanswered questions of what happened to Cassie and why remain unknown to Lily, for now. But, big secrets never stay hidden, do they? I really enjoyed this audiobook and finding out what happened to Cassie all those years ago. I feel like there could have been more character development of Cassie, but really enjoyed the audiobook.
3.5 stars!
Lily Atwood is a famous journalist who is constantly in the public eye. She tries to maintain a perfect appearance, but her reputation is threatened when one of her anonymous sources reveals they know about her secret. When Lily was a young child, her older sister named Cassie went missing. With her career on the line, Lily is forced to dig into Cassie’s disappearance again.
I did really enjoy the exploration of the pressure faced by celebrities in the public eye. It seriously must be like living in a pressure cooker. The alternating conflicts kept the plot interesting, as we are simultaneously reading about the unknown father of Lily’s daughter and Cassie’s past. I did find it to be too long and slow in parts. I was also frustrated with the villain’s identity. I thought that an investigative journalist would have clued in a bit sooner.
This suspenseful read about a news reporter was a fun change of pace from all the romance books I've been reading. The audiobook of this was well done and kept me engaged with the story. I enjoyed the multiple characters and points of view. And the surprises were fun! This was a great read!
Huge thanks to my favorite audio production people at @macmillan.audio for always approving me and for always being on point with their audiobooks!!! I listened to this book last week HerPerfectLife and was immediately drawn in to the drama of Lily's missing sister. However, I didnt much like Lily. I mean, who values their #perfectlife over the struggles of their own family. And who believes a total stranger to be who he claims to be without researching that? I mean cmon shes in journalism. I guessed what was going on and lets face it, if this had happened in rea life? there wouldve been a much more violent and immediate ending so i call bullshit on the twist although everything leading up was well written and engaging but i just didnt like any of the characters, and for me, I like to feel like there's at least one protagonist; IMO they all felt like #antagonists but whatever. This story was just ok for me. I wasnt wowed by it. Sometimes bad things happen. Let them happen lol.
Omg who have I become?
I want to say thanks for the free audiobook copy of the book to #NetGalley and #MacmillanAudio
Award-winning television reporter Lily Atwood has The Perfect Life. A hugely successful career and an adorable daughter she loves more than anything. She also has secrets that she keeps tight to her chest. When an anonymous source threatens to reveal those parts of Lily’s past she’s kept so closely hidden she fears her whole life may be unraveling.
This was the first journey I have taken with this author and I am excited to say that I do not think it will be my last. I loved the impactful opening of the story that let the author make promises to the reader of what is to come. The author was successful for the most part. The story was compelling and held my interest. The narration was great.
The one problem I had was a few little character flaws. I find it hard to suspend belief and dig into a story when smart, intelligent women reporters could have used google or any other search engine to solve some of the storyline. Perhaps the protection of the secrets clouded their thinking? Still a good story and 3.5 stars
What a fantastic story. This involves Lilly and her estranged sister Cassie. Cassie went missing when Lilly was seven. Lilly went on to be a well know, Emmy winning news anchor and was in the spotlight. Lilly was very aware of the image she was portraying and tried to make herself look perfect. She finds out she may have an opportunity to find out what happened to Cassie but can she really trust her source? This was so good. I loved the narration and the pace of this book.

When an anonymous source threatens to reveal parts of Lily’s past she’s managed to keep hidden she fears her whole life may be unraveling.
Told from multiple perspectives I had no difficulty following along. But I kept feeling something was missing. I didn’t find Lily very likable and thus lacked the connection I needed. I had to remind myself that Lily was an investigative reporter as she seemed rather gullible at times.🤷🏻♀️
I listened to the audio version and enjoyed the narration.
Hank Phillippi Ryan always adds some great twists to keep you guessing and yes…shock you at the same time.
Looking forward to more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley and Macmillan Audio 🎧
Lily Atwood is perfect - or is she? The news anchor harbors a secret in the form of her mysterious sister Cassie, and she worries that if it comes out, her life will be destroyed. Producer Greer has always been Lily's confidante, but her investigation could spell the end for both of them.
This book is more suspense than thriller - I enjoyed it, but I kept waiting for a really shocking twist that never came. The Cassie reveal is interesting, but not a jaw-dropping twist. It was hard to stay interested in the story, as other reviewers have noted, because Lily, Greer, and Cassie are not very likable or relatable characters.
I enjoyed the narrator Angela Dawe, but I would have preferred having multiple narrators to cover the three women's voices, as it was sometimes confusing as to who was speaking. I wonder if I would have liked the book more in text since I read faster than I listen - the slowness of audio made things feel a bit more drawn-out.
If you enjoy stories about the past coming back to haunt an MC, you might like this one!

Thank you Netgalley, Macmillan and Tor/Forget for the review copy in exchange for an honest review.
First of all the narration was not my favorite, the voice used for the little girl was just somewhat cringe and made it hard to listen at points throughout the story.
As far as the story it was intriguing and I enjoyed the multiple POVs but I felt the plot moved too slow for me and it was not intriguing enough. There was too much unnecessary description and detail and not enough to move the plot along. In the first half of the book not much happened and at points, I was bored waiting for something or anything to happen. I would say this book was more mystery than thriller because there was nothing keeping me on the edge of my seat until the end with an unexpected plot twist. I did like how the story wrapped up at the end but getting to the end was a struggle.
Overall this book was just okay and not something I would recommend you have to go out and purchase right this second. But if you love a multi-POV very character driven mystery it might be a book you need to read right now!
3.5 stars
Thank you Netgalley for an early copy of Her Perfect Life on Audio book.
Hank Phillippi Ryan returns with a new thriller depicting how old secrets from the past can shatter the perfect illusion of the preset. #PerfectLily is how Lily Atwood lives her life, at least in public. She is a popular, successful, award winning news reporter, with the perfect young daughter, Rowen, who she's trying to keep out of the public eye. She has a secret source feeding her ground breaking news scoops, and his next one will be a doozy. Then there's Greer, Lily's steadfast producer, who keeps everything in the background organized and Lily's perfect persona intact. However, the longer they work together the more Greer begins to resent being in the background. She also resents Lily's impersonal attitude toward her, they have worked together for years but she knows nothing about her personal life, for example who is Rowen's father and who is this mysterious Cassie?
Lilies begin to arrive daily at Lily's house and that's when her world and the secrets she has kept hidden begin to unravel. She suspects that her mystery source has started digging into her past, specifically the strange disappearance of her older sister years before. When the mysterious source offers Greer an opportunity to produce a story on her own Lily, she cant refuse and she starts to cross boundaries she never would have thought possible.
Ryan's novel is a twisty thriller with secrets a mystery that continues to unravel till the very end. The pacing of the story is good and it is intriguing enough to keep my attention. It is told from three perspectives, Lily, Greer and Cassie, flashing back to the story before she disappeared. I was a bit frustrated with the characters, besides Rowen, there was no one I liked through out the whole novel and wanted to support. They all have secrets and make some very dumb choices. The ending was a little anticlimactic.
I had the audiobook version narrated by Angela Dawe. She was very enjoyable to listen to, her timing and inflections were done well and had a shift in character voices that made following the story very easy.
Her Perfect Life by Hank Phillippi Ryan was a pretty good listen. It was definitely a slow burn, so don't expect the fastest moving book, but I thought it was well thought out and written, though I wish I would have liked the characters a bit more. Greer was downright unlikable. . Lily is the epitome of perfection. As a news reporter, the public loves her. She does her best to be a perfect mother as well. In fact, she is known as #PerfectLily. A large part of that is due to the efforts of her producer Greer. Secrets start coming out...who is Rowan's father? Who is Cassie, Lily's long-lost sister, and what exactly happened to her all of those years ago?
Angela Dawe did a good job bringing the characters to life and helped the listening experience. I'd definitely listen to more books performed by her in the future. Overall, I'm glad that I had the opportunity to review this book. I wasn't bored and this kept me listening to the end. Thanks to @macmillanaudio and @netgalley for this ACR!
I enjoyed this book. The narrative going from present to past worked well in understanding Lily’s motivations and what makes her tick. The story took unexpected turns, and I laughed out loud (in a good way) with Greer’s dripping with jealousy narrative. I did have to size the belief quite a bit with a chunk of the later plot—- no reporter in the world would go along with a “detective “ without knowing which agency, who they had in common, and why the hell he was working a missing persons case for a woman no one could ever have reported missing.
Bounced back and forth between book and audio, enjoyed the narrator.
! Its a fast paced suspenseful thriller mystery that I was unable to put down. Told in three points of view in a dual before/now timeline, full of twists and turns.
In the story we follow Lily who when she was seven her sister dissappeared. Now 25 years later she is a journalist, a mother and has the seemingly perfect life.
Greer is Lily's assistant and they have just won another Emmy thanks to some anonymous tips. But when a private investigator starts making inquiries about Lily's past decisions need to be made of how far they'll go to protect her.
Then we have 18 year old Cassie who is off to college and is Lily's sister, they were raised by their mother. Something happens while Cassie is at college and no one hears from her again.
