Well, I'll be the first to admit that it took me a few seconds to realize that the character on the cover was a spider --- but once you get a few pages in, you quickly learn that Maxwell is no ordinary spider. His legend is only limited by the imaginations of the family who finds his web on their vehicle's side mirror.
This new book by Jeremy C. Gredone is told with a fun, fast-paced tone, but my favorite part is that he invites readers to fill in their own details at a key part in the book. Perfect for encouraging little imaginations.
After reading this book, encourage your children to develop stories about what happened with other things they encounter in their everyday world. Everything has a story, right?
This was certainly a very creative story and one to encourage wild imaginations. But, my son and I had a hard time connecting with it. It could be that we don't like spiders or bugs in our household so developing empathy for and cheering on this little spider character (and the family that was cheering him on) was a little difficult for us. The story also tried to fit too much into small picture story by venturing far off into the distant future. I understood the messaging behind that and I did like the idea of it but it didn't quite work for us. Possibly it is our anti-spider judgment clouding our view. If you aren't opposed to spiders and feel like you could root for a little spider give it a try. You may find you like it more than we did.

A story to encourage imagination in a child. Lulu and Jack find a spider on the mirror of the car and he hangs on to one thin thread of his web. The children spin webs of tales about the spiders adventures and it become legend! What a creative way to inspire your child to like spiders and discover adventures. Great drawings too! I hope Jack and Lulu have as many adventures as the spider!
Beautiful story about how resilient we can be in the face of diversity. Maxwell, the spider keeps building his web over and over. The story ties into our own lives how we can rise above even when we experience failure.
This is a great children's book. Maxwell has amazing illustrations and a great storyline. This is one you will want to read to your child over and over again.
This book is so cute! I loved the story first of all. And I actually hate spiders, but this one was cute. I also loved the illustrations. They were so fun and vibrant and I think they would keep a group of young kids interested! I loved how the kids could come up with who they thought Maxwell was. The end was fun where it showed how they wrote and illustrated the book. I give this one 5 stars! Loved it.
Maxwell is a fun and interactive book about a spider who joins the family on an ordinary day and goes on to do extraordinary things in their imaginations. The illustrations were imaginative and colorful. The pages that included the opportunity for kids to think up their own versions of Maxwell was a cute touch. I think kids and parents will enjoy the book.
Maxwell is adorable, cute, and has a knack for inspiring kids and adults! The illustrations are superb and match perfectly with the couplet rhyme scheme.
A cool feature about the book is that it's not just one story, but two. You have in the beginning a beautiful kids book, then you have featured content from the author for which the book is based. The book also has great activities for kids to enjoy!
I really enjoyed this book. I do think, it could have stood alone without the "chain of life" section that is near the end. While explained in the text, I'm not sure it was necessary.
A few of the rhymes in the book fell out of sync while reading. The rhythm wasn't consistent. I did find myself re-reading a few lines to see where the emphasis needed to go in order to make the pace make sense. However, overall a fantastic book for young, imaginative readers.
This book was so cute! I have a niece now so I am starting to look for children's books that I can one day read to her. I love the drawings and I think the drawing style was so cute and unique! Perfect story and children's book to read to your kids. I can't wait to see what else this author produces and I will be reading any other work that they put out.
Maxwell is a fun and interactive book about the power of your imagination. This book celebrates the smallest thing - a wee spider who has spun the perfect web - and how use of your imagination can give it an even bigger life. Throughout the book there are moments where your child can interact using drawing prompts, which will keep your child entertained.
I thought this book was a lot of fun and really enjoyed how grandiose Maxwell the spider’s adventures became towards the end of the book. The illustrations were colorful and bright and the font was the perfect size for storytime.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an eARC of this book.
