I tend to not give character books enough credit and Kohei Horikoshi has shown me why I'm wrong. This compendium offers not only stunning artwork of our favorite My Hero Academia Characters but amazing points that help build out the MHA world even more. There is a beauty to the book that I think every MHA fan will appreciate with great character moments that add more to the world in the best ways. It honestly feels like essential reading.
I think I expected something like the old Marvel and Dc encyclopedias, with entries for every character and detailed descriptions of powers, and that is sort of what I got. But it also felt like this was more setup to catch people up on the storyline than really exploring the universe further.
Beautifully drawn and very informative! Superhero series can involve tons of characters, all with their own powers and characteristics, which can be difficult to track. I enjoyed having a character guide that refreshed my memory on who everyone was. I especially liked the relationship webs showing how everyone is connected to everyone else.
Part of me is really happy to see books like this still being published. It reminds me of the old guidebooks they used to publish for the Marvel Universe, back when the Internet wasn't a thing and you couldn't just look up a character on a wiki, something you can share if you gift this to a young person, but that part of me gets a bit depressed that I thought of this "Back in my day" factoid. Heck, if you're sending off your kid to a place with no Internet, throw this in as part of their survival kit. The data is pretty up to date for the anime fans, but not for the manga, although it does feature manga art. I hope this got proofread before it went to print because the "Inasa Yoarashi" caption on page 182 for Mandalay's Relationships chart is not quite right. (I received a free copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.)
