This is a very emotional, excellent novel. The characters are well written and the plot is exceptional. The dilemmas mother, Anna, faces are heartfelt, some are too awful to imagine when it comes to her ex, Ryan. His behavior made my blood run cold. Yet, Anna braves it all for the sake of her daughter.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Title: To save my child by Emma Robinson (@emmarobinsonuk)
Genre: Domestic Fiction
Rating: 4/5
Verdict: Firstly Thank you to @bookouture and @netgalley for letting me read this arc and let me say I was impressed! Not only does it cover the serious subject of Organ donation and childhood disease, she also tackles the lesser known aspect of domestic abuse, coercive control. Some parts of the book had me crying over Anna’s plight and I was so furious with Ryan and his blatant narcissistic tendencies - it really tugged at my heartstrings. Not only does the narrative explore these aspects in detail, it also looks at society’s view on single parenthood, the breadline and people using their children as pawns, picking them up and discarding them when they got bored. I identified with Libby so much because I’d had this happen to me with my biological father. This book had everything, a race against time, ethics and morals, unlikely friendships, heartbreak and chilling moments to rival @jodipicoult and @diane.chamberlain.author. It really made me think how lucky I am to have a loving stepfather and that I have my health and dont need to rely on lists and procedures to live a full life. It really gives an inside account of the organ donation process and the tragedies that do occur. A heartwarming and engaging novel surrounding the lengths a mother would go to to save her child, that will make you reflect on your own life. A highly recommended read about the silent epidemic. |

A fantastic easy to read book. Great style of writing. I am a fan of Emma Robinson and this book certainly didn't disappoint. The story between Lilian and Anna is heartwarming and a lovely ending.
Wow, just brilliant as always from this author, Emma Robinson definitely knows how to pull at the heart strings and I was glued to this book from the beginning until the end.
All the characters were so well developed and the story line just flowed and flowed, I couldn't get enough.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for allowing me to read this brilliant book, well done Emma Robinson and I look forward to your next one. Five + stars from me.
omg, the tears! Anna’s daughter Libby becomes suddenly unwell and needs a kidney transplant. Anna isn’t a match, but will her estranged narcissist husband Ryan be a match? Ryan’s true nature shows the depths of his selfishness and he makes his decision. This is a heartbreaking story. .
What a roller coaster of a read! I felt so sorry for Anna and Libby, and totally hated Ryan!! Heart breaking and uplifting in equal measure.
What i love most about Emma Robinson 's books is how easy they are to get into, straight away you are drawn in by the story, To Save My Child is such a heart wrenching story I was absolutely gripped.
Emma Robinson goes from strength to strength with this heart-wrenching and transfixing novel about how far a mother will go to save her child. Anna's daughter, Libby, is diagnosed with a life-threatening condition and only Ryan, her narcissistic husband from whom she is separated, can help. So far, so simple in terms of the premise but every time I thought I knew where the story would go, it went a different way, until in the end I abandoned myself to the author's storytelling spell. Manipulative, power playing Ryan is Robinson's darkest character yet and he is, sadly, all too believable. Robinson really brings home the reality of how hard it is to extricate yourself from a former partner when there is a child involved, how it can feel so horribly like a prison sentence. The characters and how they interlace makes for an absorbing and satisfying read and the deft way the author ties it all together at the end is completely believable whilst being incredibly satisfying at the same time. Robinson is an author with important things to say about humanity, kindness and why how we behave matters not only to those around us, but to ourselves. This is commercial women's fiction at the highest level. These are stories for everyone to read, enjoy and reflect upon. Brava.
Full of raw emotion and well-defined, authentic characters, To Save My Child explores the power of family and friendship in the most challenging circumstances. Readers feel the angst of a mother’s fight for her child as well as the constant worry and fear for their future.
Due to unfortunate circumstances surrounding abuse, Anna Ferguson and her 6-year-old daughter, Libby, leave home and move close to Anna’s mother who can offer support. Anna, weakened by domestic abuse, manipulation and narcissism, needs to find the strength to fight for her daughter. When she has to confront the person she fears most in order to save the person she loves the most, it takes every ounce of courage she can summon. The plot is propelled by the suspense of trying to find a cure for her daughter.
Robinson’s use of the third-person point of view was fantastic. I love her free indirect style and stream of consciousness because it put me right there with the characters. Robinson’s character development is exquisite. She doesn’t fall into the trap of telling, but rather uses everything from relationships to clothing choices to reveal her character’s traits. The range of characters offers a wonderful balance to the narrative and features wonderful, strong, supportive relationships against a destructive one. Although not a mother nor never having dealt with a terminal illness, I could still identify with a character who says one thing but does another! I felt the pain of pretending that everything is fine on the surface, but wanting to scream while treading water frantically behind the scene.
This superbly written novel explores organ donation and controlling relationships. A tear-jerker, this one must be read with a box of tissues handy. Emma Robinson is an author I can trust to deliver a five-star read.

I was gifted this advance copy by Emma Robinson, Bookouture, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
What a fabulous read this is!
What I love about Emma’s books is how easy they are to get into, and how I can connect instantly with the female characters as they go through every parents worst nightmare. The way this book has been written just made the story feel so “real” that I was easily able to visualise so many of the scenes through the book and found myself completely lost in what was going on. Such a brilliantly written book that had me feeling so much empathy towards the mothers in this story.
I would highly recommend this book.
A new book by this author means being in for a great treat, but it also means having a box of tissues handy. You know before you even start, you are going to be in for a very emotional story that will touch you deeply.
It starts already with the title. Who does not want to do everything they can to save their child? This is a question that should not even be a question. I am or better was convinced everybody would, until I realised some people are really pure evil. It's very hard to understand, to believe some people can think and act this way. It's just disgusting they way they play, not only with other people's feelings, but with their lives as well. In a way they are murderers...
On the other hand there is the beautiful and powerful bond between a mother and her child and the support they get when they need it the most. It was very heartwarming to see how someone who just suffered a great loss, steps in to prevent someone less going through the same devastating period.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I sometimes wanted to crawl between to pages to slap a certain person a few times around the face. They totally deserved it!
They often say there is a light at the end of the tunnel. It's seems likes it's being switched off a few times, but will it burn brightly in the end? 5 stars
Thank you
This is certainly a beautiful, touching story about family, friendship, love, hardship, illness, strength, and hope.
It is exquisitely written, and had me sitting with a box of tissue by my side during the entire book.
There is no parent or grandparent who will read these pages without thinking of your own child or grandchild and praying this nightmare does not ever come to lbe for their children.
I admired Anna's determination to find and end to Libby's illness despite the costs and pain for herself.
Well done!
A really beautiful poignant read. When Anna's daughter Libby gets sick and has to go on dialysis Anna is naturally devastated, she has difficult relationship with Libby's controlling father from whom she is separated from and when she askes for his help things don't go as planned. A well sensitively written story, which is both heartbreaking and very sad at times and Anna will do everything possible to save her daughter
Second book I have read by this author and love the way I was hooked into the story from page one. Written in a way that you can feel the raw emotions of the story. This book totally gripped me from beginning to end and I would recommend it.
Anna has finally left her husband taking her six-year-old daughter called Libby. She has just had enough of his abusive behaviour and makes the decision that it would be better for Libby to have one happy parent than two bickering parents. She moves nearer to her mother, who helps her financially to set up a new home for her daughter and granddaughter. Anna is fair with giving her husband Ryan access to Libby. They settle in together and Anna starts the job of a chef manager at the school Libby attends. Her sister, a family lawyer, is in contact with Ryan’s solicitor, but Ryan is in no hurry to be divorced. In fact he hasn’t even been to see Libby for over six months, blaming the long drive to Anna’s new home and busy times at work.
Libby loves her school and her teacher Mr Harris. She has made good friends and is a very happy, bright and well-adjusted little girl. She makes her mother proud with her polite behaviour and by being happy and sociable. But then Libby falls dangerously ill. She will need a life-saving operation and quickly too, to survive. Anna immediately steps forward and tests are initiated to see if Anna is a suitable donor. When the results come back she is staggered to learn that she is not a good match. She would do anything to save her daughter. She feels hopeless and heart-broken. Then she decides to take the only other option for Libby. She bites back her fear and reluctance to ask her estranged husband for help. She would literally do anything for Libby. She picks up the phone to ask Ryan to step up and get the tests, hoping he will be a match for their daughter and be able to give her the chance to get well. This is the story of Libby’s illness, friendships and a loving family.
If you have never read any of Emma Robinson’s standalone novels and you love family dramas, this book would be an excellent novel to introduce you to a new author. If you are already a fan of her exquisite writing, then I can assure you that you are in for a real treat. Emma is so talented and she has certainly found a splendid specialism in her genre of writing. Her research is meticulous and well explained in her storytelling, giving her work added kudos and authenticity. She writes novels full of emotion, both heart-breaking and heart-warming stories with well-rounded and satisfying conclusions: all with lovely storytelling straight from her very heart, creating wonderful characters that are true to life and will become like personal friends that you actually care about. Her storyboard is like an artist’s palette with everything there for perfection and enjoyment.
I’d like to thank both NetGalley and the publishers of this book, the wonderful Bookouture, who always seem to cater for my exact choice in literature. I received my copy of this book in return for an honest and open review. These are my own opinions without any other influences taken into account. This is my review and a richly deserved recommendation that this is women’s literature at its very best.
Another fantastic, emotional read as only this author can write.
How far would a mother go for her child? We all know the answer to this, but to read it unfold is a beautifully profound emotional and healing experience for Anna and her daughter Libby .
Have the tissues ready and prepare to read cover to cover !
its not unusual for books to make me cry but i cried bucket loads eith this book, honestly it is such an emotive tear jerker of a book so be prepared. It is such a captivating book that grabbed hold of me and i couldnt have let go even if i wanted to i had to know what happened. I took the characters to my heart and they will remain there along with this book for a long time.
This one is definitely a tear jerker story. The author chose a subject that is every mother’s nightmare. There is a whole lot of angst and emotional turmoil in this one. I teamed up more than once. But the father in this book was just vile. A true narcissist and at times his awfulness had me raging so much I had to pause my reading. It was a great read.
I absolutely love this authors books and they just keep getting better and better and this one is certainly no exception you just know with this author you have to plan on putting everything else on hold to continue reading as once you have started you really cannot put down. This author has such a special and talented way of writing about human emotion and the human condition in such a way as to break your heart and warm it again.
To save my child covers two very important themes that of coercive control in a relationship which is something which tends to be kept hidden behind closed doors and that of organ donation and how more awareness needs to be given to living kidney donors and how precious these gifts are to those who are suffering from kidney problems and their families.
This book will stay with me a long time and is such a poignant read and also illustrates the importance of friendships and family and how it is important to live each day as though it’s your last.
A sad, happy, inspiring story. It shows that for some the outcome isn't what you want, but for others. whatever hurdles you have to overcome, there is the best outcome you could wish for
