Charming story of Annabelle and her parents and her 6th grade crush Bailey. The other Annabelle is a very interesting character. Thank you to Netgalley and the piblisher for the advance review copy.
This book was absolutely lovely and wonderful! The voices of the characters were perfectly captured so much so that I felt transported to being back in 6th grade again. I love the character development in Annabeth's father, in the first few chapters I didn't care for him as much (even though I saw where he was coming from by not sharing his transition), but then seeing his eyes opened because of his daughter and her friend was so nice. It felt real and honest instead of just written to be a plot device for this novel. I do wish there was a bit more time for Annabeth's mother to talk about her story and how she identifies more as just femme, but I understand that there's only so much time to tell this story. I will absolutely be purchasing this title for my library and will recommend it to all my coworkers and middle school kids that come to the library!
Thanks to NetGalley for the eARC of Different Kinds of Fruit by Kyle Lukoff. After reading and enjoying Kyle Lukoff's Newbery honor winning book, Too Bright to See, I was hoping this one would be as enjoyable. It did not disappoint. Annabelle, a sixth-grader, meets Bailey, a new student at school and learns that Bailey is nonbinary and goes by they/them pronouns. This idea is new to Annabelle but she accepts it with grace and understanding. However, when explaining Bailey to her parents, Annabelle's father inexplicably gets angry leading both Annabelle and Bailey to believe that he is transphobic. However this is far from the truth, he is simply afraid his secret might be revealed. And that's all I will say.
This book is funny, heartwarming and informative and above all--necessary.
