Tense moments mix with action pure to create a heroine, who will go to any length to fight for those she cares about and do what she believes needs to be done.
First off, this book cannot really be read as a stand-alone, since it picks off where book one left off. So, this should be read as a series. This one also holds some 'spicier' scenes. So, readers concerned with that area should be aware.
Hayley is determined to destroy the demon, who possessed her sister, and travels to Hell with her friends. There she must not only pass the circles of Hell but must overcome impossible dangers and deadly creatures. Every turn is more dangerous than the last, and success is definitely not guaranteed.
This book holds even more tension and action than the first. Hayley enters the stomach of Hell. The author has let her imagination take free flight and has created a very vivid and deadly realm. The world building captures with every scene and gives the tale the need darkness and grit. The reader sinks right in with Hayley as she crosses from one deadly situation into the next. Not only is this a quick-paced read, but the plot twists and turns, promising surprises and secrets in all the right places. In other words, it's not a read, which is easily put down.
The characters, especially Hayley, come across well. Often times, I find that personalities suffer as the action increases, but the author has managed to build in a lovely character arc for the heroine. She has a hard journey ahead of her and a lot to learn along the way. Her determination makes her easy to root for. But then, her friends...as well as the romance...aren't to be overlooked, either. It creates a rounded read with heart behind the adventure.
The ending of this book is a cliff-hanger, and while I'd love to know how things will continue, a little patience is required since book three isn't due out until this coming Spring.
Molly once again brings us a killer book about paranormal beings, friendship, and loveeeee. I adored this sequel to Ember of Night and I can't wait to grab Molly's next book!
I absolutely loved this book! Hold on tight for a heart pounding ride. This book picked up right where Ember of the night left off. The writing is wonderful and the characters are well developed—especially Harley. Love the romance too! This book has great conflict. It kept me reading long into the night! You know how people often say that the second book is never as good as the first. Not the case. It was just as good, if not better in my opinion! I typically read contemporary romance but this dive back into YA paranormal was exactly what I needed to get me out of my reading slump. Huge thank you to Entangled and Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book!
Shadow of Light is Molly E. Lee’s next teen/YA paranormal novel in her Ember of Night series. I used to say that I wasn’t a huge teen/YA fan or even a huge paranormal fan. But now, I’d venture to say that’s definitely changing, especially when it comes to this author’s words. I am a huge fan of whatever she writes. Molly has a fantastic talent for creating adventurous characters who take you on wonderful journeys. Her Love on the Edge series hooked me on her writing style, and I haven’t looked back since. (Seriously…go check that one out, too!)
Note: Please be aware that there are some pretty heavy themes to this book, so if you struggle with abuse or thoughts of suicide, please be aware there may be triggers in this story, and it may not be for you.
Also note: This is NOT a standalone title. You must read Ember of Night first because this one picks up right where it left off. Harley is still fierce. Only now she knows it. And she’s still fiercely loyal to the few she allows to get close to her. After her best friend’s betrayal, that list has shrunk yet again. Draven is even more broody, moody, and full of secrets. Only this time, these two admit they are in love and have a common goal to free her sister (and probably the world) from the ultimate evil as they journey through Hell.
This story was nothing short of an emotional roller coaster. It’s chocked full of thrills and chills and twists and turns that will leave your head spinning. And the ending… GAH! It’s a cliffhanger once more. I swear she’s one of the few authors I’ll still read their books even if they torture me with one. While I liked the first book, I loved this one.
If you’re a YA paranormal fan, this book should be one you run, not walk, to. I’ve been a fan of Molly’s for a few years, and this Ember of Night series is just one more reason why she’s on my automatic 1-click list.
I can't wait for everyone to read this amazing book, and fall in love with the story.
I totally and completely loved this book with my whole heart. I’m stone cold in love with this author’s writing and desperate for more.
This story grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go. I spent the entire day with my nose buried in my Kindle, eagerly tapping the pages and ignoring life, from page one until the end.
This needs to go right to the top of your TBR pile. It is MAGIC.
Spanish Review:
Por el amor de Dios! Este libro es totalmente Perfecto no puedo creer lo increíble que es.
La forma en la que la autora desarrolla la historia es simplemente fenomenal. Totalmente recordado.
¡Feliz Lectura!
I am completely enthralled in this series! I couldn’t wait to get my hands on this book because I needed more! The world-building is phenomenal and so intriguing, and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I can’t wait to see where the rest of this story takes us!
Ember of Night left us hanging, but Shadow of Light picks up right where we left off. IN MISERY AND LEFT GASPING.
This book portrays so much more than a world of make believe, but shows that family is beyond blood, and you are the maker of your story and the holder of your strength.
Molly E Lee has joined the gang of must read YA authors.
Love Jennifer L Armentrout YA?
Classandra Clare and all the angels and demons?
Then this series is right for you.
Read if you like:
-upper YA steam-tactic scenes
-angels, demons, and the one person who can destroy it all (or save them)
-diverse characters
-side characters to keep you wanting more
-found family
-magic, creatures, demons, and more
-an MC to cheer for
TW- child abuse/neglect, topics of self harm and suicide, trauma, alcohol abuse.
Why I knocked a star:
Honestly I think it's me..... I am a 30 year old woman who started with SJM and is slowly learning that 18 year old MC characters may not feel relatable for me anymore and at times I can find their decision making frustrating.
So.... I will stick with it's me, and I hope you give Molly E Lee a chance if you love YA/NA fantasy.
Rating:
story-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
characters-⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
steam- 🥵 its getting hotter, but still within the YA playing field.

I really loved this action packed sequel! (definitely read bk 1 first)
We pick up right from where the first book left off, and whats happening in the aftermath of Harley and Dravens efforts to keep Marid from getting to earth. When Harleys little sister Ray turns out to be possessed by Marid, Harley and her friends will do whatever it takes to break the connection between them.. Even if that means traveling to Hell, racking up a whole lot of favors, and hopefull tracking down some allies..
This story is a bit darker as our unlikely group of friends are traveling through Hell . A whole lot of beings in Hell have their own agendas but our unlikely group of friends are on a mission and wont let anything get in the way. The story is so action packed and full of witty/ sarcastic comments that bring some light to the seriousness of whats going on around them..
We get some more tidbits about Harleys origins, and while alot of questions are answered we are left with so many more.. and I can't wait to see how its all going to come together..
. and that ending!! How am I supposed to wait for the next book with that ending?? I need it yesterday!
Shadow of Light picks up where Ember of Night ended and whoa! Book 1 was pretty dark, but this is even darker. Double the grittiness, danger, action, suspense, secrets, twists, and high stakes. Oh the romance is hot, and not because they're in Hell. I loved the dynamics between Harley and the addition of some secondary characters, I grew to love them all. And the choices and trials Harley faced were never easy, but geez, can the girl get a break? The writing is gritty, and it totally matches the worldbuilding as they journey through the realms of Hell, granted some parts ebbed and flowed better than others for me. And the end, like what the heck lol. Another cliffhanger I'll have to endure until May.
Read this series if you like:
• kick butt heroine
• bad boy with a soft heart
• impossible odds
• angels, demons, warlocks & monsters
• dark, sarcastic humor
• sisterly love
• chosen family
• The Dark Elements, Storm & Fury, Furyborn
• upper YA romance (low spice)
Welcome back to this weeks episode of Ariel losing her mind over yet another cliff hanger. I really should have seen this coming after the way book one ended, yet here we are.
Jumping into this one was a little difficult. l remember reading and loving book one earlier this year, but for some reason the details were a bit fuzzy. I went back and reread the last few chapters of book one before diving in and it had me all geared up to jump back into this world!
Buckle up friends, we’re going to Hell!
Shadow of Light picks up right where Ember of Night leaves off. One of the things I wanted more of from book one was answers about Ray. I’m happy to report that many of those questions are answered as this book is quite literally a journey to Hell to break the tether between Marid and Ray.
If you, like me, are a fan of a steamier fantasy romance book, you will love how much Molly Lee turns up the heat! Especially once we reach Lusro (the realm of Lust).
This fast paced book had me flying through pages, desperate for more while dreading the end knowing I’ll have to wait until May of next year for Spark of Ash to release. 😭
Perfect for fans of Jennifer Armentrout and Tracy Wolff, read if you love:
- badass fiercely protective MC
- found/chosen family
- urban/paranormal fantasy
- fast paced adventures
- bad boy turned protective cinnamon roll love interest
- NA forbidden romance 🔥🔥🔥
Thank you Entangled Teen and Molly Lee for the e-arc!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for allowing me review this book. I received an E-ARC for a personal review. I loved Ember of the Night so much. When I saw Shadow of Light was coming out I totally had to review this book. First of the all the book continues right where Ember of Night left off. We had a cliff hanger in that book and I was highly anticipating what would happen next in this book. This book did not disappoint we started with answers and back on a quest to solve the problems. Without spoiling anything this book has it all. There is action, suspense, and romance. I truly love Harley and Draven's relationship. Harley definitely finds herself in this book. We see more of characters we loved in Ember of Night and we meet some great new ones as well. If you're a sucker for found families this book has what you're looking for. The book ending totally has you going ... What just happened ???? This is definitely a fun and great read. I highly recommend you pick it up you will not be disappointed.
The continuation of Ember of Night starts with a bang and the hits don't stop.
Harley, Draven, Ray and a whole tribe of characters (some new, some returning) are on a mission to take on Marid in his realm of the Aether. Only to find out, there's more to the Aether than fire and brimstone...
Their journey is filled with badass sass from Harley, more secrets from Draven, and Ray being a ball of sunshine delight even in the darkest of spaces.
I loved the story and am eagerly awaiting the next one.
I received an e-Advance Reader Copy of this book in exchange for an honest review through NetGalley and Entangled Teen Publishing.
“I determine it. From here on out, I decide my worth. If any wine doesn’t like it, they can go to fucking hell.”
Shadow of light is the perfect sequel to Ember of night. Filled with so much action, a sweet sweet romance, a beautiful relationship between sisters and a thrilling quest through hell that had me at the edge of my seat. It took me a second to get into it but once I did, wow, oh wow! It was absolutely addictive. I just couldn’t stop. Harley’s character development was inspiring, her sense of humor was nothing but perfect. Draven? Well, all I can say is Swoon. The newly introduced characters were fantastic. That twist at the end though, seriously, why?? Be prepared for a cliffy.
“Together,” I say, what is quickly becoming our mantra, despite the differences we’ve had, the struggles. Together we can face anything.”

"I've never been able to live in hope for too long, and even though things are looking better than they have in a long time, I can't stop the nagging sensation that if I look at a picture of happiness too long, it'll turn to ash"
omigod! this book is a total ride.Molly E Lee's second installment of Ember of Night series fortunately do NOT suffer the middle book curse as she delivers an impressively immersive continuation of Harley's (mis)adventure. Shadow of light picks up right where we were left off in the first book but wouldn't wait a beat before delivering a crucial point of the story. Just when Harley dares to dream of a "normal" teenage life, she faces trouble in the form of her sister Ray- who fells prey to Marid's brutal games so Harely as expected rolls her shirt sleeves to see the end of it BUT only to realize the end is one of the places she least expected to visit- HELL or Ather in formal terms. Thus Harley, Ray and Draven along with Cassiel sets an unusual journey to Ather with the help of the resident sorcerer Kaz
In all honesty I was little hesitant to pick up book 2, although it took a while for me to get into it, the story picked up soon after and then I couldn't stop! The chapters were short and every chapter ended on an exciting note that made me want to turn pages with twists I didn't see coming at every turn. There were also new characters introduced and Wallace is my absolute favorite, she is no BS person giving you facts straight to your face which lead to a super fun dynamic between her and Harley.Harley on the other hand is constantly on rage trying to curb her dark powers that even she doesn't fully comes to understand but her sarcasm and dark humor made me laugh out loud so many times. The romance between Draven and Harley definitely took one (or few) step further on the spice-o-meter scare making the book read like NA at times which I was totally ok with, I also loved Rayder's character and the little heart to heart moment with Harley.
The world of Ather with so many realms was tastefully written in my opinion and Molly takes us on an unforgettable adventure in a rig that was reminiscent of Fury Road at times ;) The fast paced story with demons and interesting blend of urban fantasy and paranormal fantasy definitely is going to be a people pleaser especially if you enjoy YA shows like Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina-the newer scarier one ;) and The Vampire diaries. It specifically made me think of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina towards the end and of course it ended on a cruel cliffhanger slashing the heart of Harley and as well as all the readers! I seriously cannot wait to see how the story concludes.
Read if you like:
-Fast paced fantasy with nonstop action/adventure with unpredictable twists
-Badass teenage female MC
-Paranormal fantasy with the premise of hell and earth
-Shows like CHAOS or The Vampire diaries
-Sizzling romance that may or may not be because of the influence of the lust realm ;)
TW- Child neglect/assault, topics of self harm, PTSD and alcohol abuse
You know what I love most about YA? All of the emotion. The age range of typical characters in the YA genre are at the age where they feel everything so strongly. Everything is intense and tension is high. At the heart of this, that was what I was feeling and I loved it!
Picking up right where Ember of Night left off, we are thrown pretty much right back into the action of the last book. And in Shadow of Light, stakes are higher! We learned so many things at the end of the previous book and we continue to ride that explosive train all through the sequel. We get more badass Harley, more swoon-worthy Draven and lots more of sweet, sweet Ray (and quite a bit of not-so-sweet Ray… you’ll see).
Harley is the key to opening the gates of Hell, quite literally. And with that bit of truth bestowed on her, what’s a girl to do? She has just saved the boy she’s falling in love with from a fate worse than death and the adventure is only beginning.
Now, her lovable little sister is freaking her the hell out… that is of course, when a demon begins possessing her at his own whim and fancy. Seriously, the Exorcist is the scariest thing I have ever seen or read and this gave me total vibes. Yikes!! Now, Harley, Draven, Ray and a whole cast of others must travel realms to find answers, searching for Draven’s long lost twin brother in the process.
This book was wholly darker than Ember of Night, in more ways than one and I loved every single second of it. I am still completely reeling from the last line of this book and dying for Lee’s third book!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Teen for an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own.
Molly - WHY DO YOU KEEP DOING THIS?! The ending of Ember of Night made me cackle loudly at 3 am (like witch cackle) and I was impatiently waiting for Shadow of Light to find out what happened next. However, the epilogue of this book made me furious! Which, to be fair, is good? Because now I cannot wait until book 3 comes out since there is clearly more to it than what we found out.
So this book follows Harley & the gang into the Ather in order to break the connection between Marid and Ray while figuring out more about who Harley is and what her powers mean. The Ather is what we would call Hell, but it is so much more than that and Molly does an amazing job with the world building - giving each area & different types of demons in the area their own type of personality/existence. There was a level of this book that felt like filler, so I could see how for some people it could drag (it definitely did for me here and there in tiny spots) but in the end it was all very necessary. Harley did annoy me the same way she did in the first book of just being so angry all of the time, which I get, but also I just wanted to tell her to calm down sometimes and not jump to the worst conclusion always. There was a lot of different mini adventures that happened on the way to finding Marid, and the final battles were epic in my opinion. The whole book felt a lot like a Dungeons and Dragons adventure/dungeon which I am completely here for as a D&D player.
I think we learned a lot of really cool things in this book about the characters, we met some really interesting new characters, and I am so intrigued to see where we go from here in the conclusion of this series. It is not often I read a dark YA book that doesn't feel overly dark, which is a strange thing to say. I really enjoyed this. 5/5
Omigod, this book! Shadow of Light is seriously even more enjoyable than the first book, Ember of Night!
I won't say too much as it'll spoil the entire plot of Ember of Night, but I will say...this book has plenty of action, witty humor, romance, and twists and turns that you might end up getting whiplash (and that flipping epilogue again...damn!), so hold onto your seat! It's quickly paced and written in such a way that makes you want to keep turning the page.
I loved the growth of some familiar characters and some newly introduced ones (I absolutely love Wrath!) and the relationships that were further built upon from book one. This book definitely held up well as a second-in-a-series story with no lull in the plot...no middle book syndrome here! I am greatly looking forward to "Spark of Ash"!
If you loved Ember of Night, I highly recommend you continue the series and read Shadow of Light!
Huge thank you to Entangled Publishing for the e-ARC to read, enjoy, and honestly review.
Ah I love this series. The guys in this series are all so swoon worthy. From Kazuki and Cassiel to some new ones. And Harley is definitely one of my favorite heroines. She’s so strong and tough and I love how she always does what she needs to and what’s right even though she didn’t want the life she was born with. I totally understand that and love how much heart she has. I love all the action and development in this book and can’t wait for the next one because again that ending.
Totally recommend this series. Perfect for fans of Crave and From Blood and Ash and Hush Hush.
I’m still in love with this series BUT Harley kind of bugged me…like A LOT.
I just don’t get why she had to be so nasty to everyone (Nathan) who’s ever been kind to her. She gets too hung up on the mistakes others have made and judges others on those mistakes. Benefit of a doubt isn’t something in her repertoire .
I absolutely loved Ray. She’s so spicy for a 7-8 year old girl. And it was sooooooo satisfying seeing her stand up to Harley, defending others. Something I don’t get and I’m sure that’s going to be explained later, is others’ reactions to Ray. I get the whole “seer” thing but i need a little more background.
The spicy is gooooooooood! Draven is just so damn delicious 🤤 and for an ancient celibate dude, he knows KNOWS! Lol
He messes up a lot by not telling Harley a lot of things. Sure, he’s allowed privacy and the right to disclose info but knowing how Harley is, he KNEW she wouldn’t be too forgiving since she would see it as a betrayal.
Kazuki makes a short appearance but what I liked the most was that one convo between Harley, Kaz, and Draven when Harley and Draven are in the underworld! That was hilarious!
Also liked actually getting to know Cas, the angel of death. Seeing how he brings out another side of Draven, or more like the knowledge he has of Draven’s past, makes Draven a lot more interesting. Especially when Ryder finally shows up, a lot of holes are filled in.
No spoilers — but the whole antichrist thing is NOT what is expected. It’s still a trip on how Molly is handling that and I can’t wait to see how things go down with the Seven. ESPECIALLY AFTER THAT CLIFFHANGER OF AN ENDING!!!!!!!
Harley, Ray, and Draven join some others to journey through the realms of Hell (Ather) to try to save Ray from Marid's hold. Nothing is as it seems and Harley never knows what is coming at them next or who to trust. Lots of action and fast paced story. Cliffhanger warning!
