I absolutely loved this book! It was a fantastic follow-up to Spells Trouble. I will say that I think part of why I love these books is that I am from central Illinois myself, and the accuracy and detail the authors have put into their descriptions of places is fantastic. They really did a great job nailing the central Illinois vibe. I love the Goode sisters, I think they are fantastic characters, and I find myself agreeing with each sister about the other during their chapters. I also adore Xena, and wish I had my own familiar like her in my life. I think the direction this story took in this book was perfect. It definitley didn't have a book two slump feeling. The cliffhanger it ended on was great, in that it has me super excited to read the next book and see what happens with the Goode sisters!
Being the second book in the trilogy, this book spent the e tire time building up for the final, which made it a little slow to read and didn't keep my attention the same way as the first one. Omens Bite was also more true to it's target audience, as it was very full of young teenage drama. The sisters are definitely not getting along, but it all seemed very immature and petty. The building of lore and myth continued to amaze me. In the end, they are both in some serious trouble, so I look forward to seeing what comes next.
I had such a great time reading these books! I've enjoyed their previous world, and I was excited to start this one. The prologue was immediately engrossing, and I had to learn more about this world, and getting to know these sisters!
It's the girls' birthday, and it's time for them to get initiated, and to take up the task of guarding the gates to the underworlds. And boy, do things get going quickly! I loved watching these stories unfold, and I need to know where it's going to go from here!
There was a lot going on in these books. With this world of magic and the Underworld gates and the various mythologies that are coming into play, and the murders that claimed their mother's life, as well as the relationship between the twins, there's a lot going on. It worked so well, and I couldn't put them down!
By Omens Bite, we've gotten to know these characters and this world, and things are getting worse. It's a darker book, and the twins are pretty top tier in their miscommunication, and there's some bad feelings there. I wish they'd just sit down and talk it out, they needed each other! And oh, that ending was an evil cliffhanger! I need to know more!
These were really great reads, and I can't wait for book 3!
This was really interesting and somewhat creepy. There was some drama between the twins, which was interesting. I thought the first book was dark, but this one was darker. Mercy made some questionable decisions, though they left me wondering about what will happen next in the series.
Unfortunately I couldn't finish this book. I struggled with the first. book in the series and thought I would give the series a second chance. This didn't prove to be any better than the first.
I have previously enjoyed books written by the Cast duo. I have read the entire House of Night series. I don't know if my tastes have changed or if the writing is different. I'm hesitant to pick up anything else.
This one was not for me.
Thank you NetGalley for providing a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
I received this and as an eARC to read for free in exchange for my honest review. Thank you NetGalley St, Martin’s Press, and Wednesday Books for giving me access.
After having read Spells Trouble, I knew that I needed book two immediately. Needless to say I got sidetracked and forgot about it until now.
I wish I didn’t.
Omens Bite is one that you really need to read book one right before jumping in, otherwise it feels like a completely different story. With my slight confusion, I still enjoyed the story but it is definitely felt like a filler book to bridge the gap between books one and three.
Rating 3.5/5 Rounded Up
Thank you so much for the advanced copy of this book. It definitely lived up to its hype. This author has become a must read.
I am not too sure how I feel about this series to be honest, which is a shame because I love P.C. and Kristin Cast. I just think that maybe my expectations for them are too high so this delivery felt a little below average unfortunately.
This book was received as an ARC from St. Martin's Press - Wednesday Books from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book is a reflection of the expertise, brilliance, and creative mind of P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast. They outdid herself again with the second installment of the Sisters of Salem, Omens Bite. I remember being really upset when they wrote the last book of the series House of Night (Redeemed) falling in love with Zoey Redbird. Now I am in love with Mercy and Hunter, the twitches. Their adventures are jaw-dropping, and invigoratingly heart-racing. They did not disappoint with this novel, and I almost got scared at many chapters of this novel. The ending was on a cliffhanger so, I'll be expecting an even more exciting third book in the series.
A transformation of the YA Fantasy world that will shape the future of YA Fantasy for years to come. This book deserves 5 stars.
I think this is my last Cast novel. They just write too much and the story suffers from that. A good idea, but not executed well.
I did not read this book because I wasn't much interested after the first one which was okay but not a series I would continue.
Omens Bite continues the witchy exploits of Mercy and Hunter Goodeville, twin sisters separated by grief and anger.
Mercy…
Okay, if you read my review of Spells Trouble, then you already know I did not like Mercy at all. So when I picked up Omens Bite, I had been hoping for some character development on her part.
I think my hatred of her grew.
Mercy is oblivious to her sister’s pain. Her problem is that she does not listen to anyone and thinks she is right. She forced her sister to forsake her god on some old riddle, one she misinterpreted. And in doing so, she hurt her sister significantly.
But does she care? No. Not once does she seek to try to understand her sisters’ pain. Instead, she continues to brush it away. It would be easy for her to understand her sisters’ pain, to acknowledge that she was wrong and made a mistake! But no, she does not do that once.
Then, probably most annoying, is her usage of British colloquialisms like “bugger me.” Half the time, I want to smack her and tell her she’s not British. But, unfortunately, it only serves to make her more superficial as a character and, in some ways, highlight how self-involved she is.
Her voice and attitude create a superficial tone that makes reading her POV in the struggle annoying.
Hunter!
Hunter, on the other hand. She was amazing. This character is experiencing grief on multiple levels, and the reader becomes invested in her. It also helps that she is coming into her skin here.
In the previous novel, she had her own POV, but because of the narrative and structure of the story, she felt like more of a sidekick to Mercy. That was until the end of Spells Trouble when she invokes a powerful goddess and ends the life of the cyclops who terrorized their town.
Hunter tries to figure out who she is without her sister and mother. She is trying to navigate her world without the god she has always known, with a new goddess that sometimes frightens her.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I liked Omens Bite. It delves more into the Wiccan lifestyle with realistic and respectful detail. And while half the book, Mercy’s half, annoys me, I still enjoyed the whole story.
I loved this book just as much as the first one. You definitely have to read the first one before picking up this one or you will be lost. It picked up right where the first left off. PC Cast and Kristin Cast write such good stories. The worlds they create are in such beautiful detail. I can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read this book in exchange for my honest review.
I wanted to love this book. I really did. I enjoyed Spells Trouble, so I was excited when I got approved to read this. However, I felt like the flow of the book was very uneven, between the different POV's. I definitely enjoyed Hunter's POV more. I felt like Hunter's chapters were more interesting, and you got to see her growth. I also really liked Jax and the introduction of Kylie.
I was very frustrated by Mercy's POV. I was hoping to see some growth with here in this book. However, she still remained very childish and self centered. She could have saved herself a lot of trouble if she would have taken two seconds to listen to her sister, and even Emily and Xena. The only parts of her POV that I enjoyed was when Khenti was there and Xena's sass.
With that being said, I am looking forward to continuing with the series. The parts that I enjoyed outweighed the parts that I didn't like so much. I would love to see some growth with Mercy and happiness for Hunter.
This book picked up where the last one ended off and it was just as interesting and just as good. I couldn't put it down
I enjoyed this book and how it starts right where the first one ended. I felt like as a whole there wasn't a lot accomplished in this book and maybe that's because more will happen in the next book of the series. I did enjoy learning more about the Egyptian tree and the underworld there. There was plenty of sister drama that was made all the more dramatic when you throw magic into the mix. You can't help but hope the entire time that one of them will be the first to give in and make amends, but at least it's entertaining seeing the sisters as individuals and what kind of trouble they can get themselves into!
I totally forgot I had this available on NetGalley and borrowed it from the library. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more from the authors
Couldn’t do the first one. Can’t do this one. Will update my review if I decide to attempt the series further

Fantasy/YA
As two twin witches travel their own paths after the sudden death of their mother. One on a path that could only lead to trouble and the other on a path the will take her to the Egyptian Underworld.
I really liked this book although you could tell in parts that it was written for a younger generation. It was a real pager turner for me. This was definitely a five star read for me. I recommend it for fantasy lovers of any generation.
