Thanks to St. Martin's Press - Minotaur Books and NetGalley for the advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review. This was a solid thriller that had a lot of twists and turns throughout. I've read Every Last Fear by the same author and would definitely read more of his books in the future!
I have loved both of Finlay's books. From the opening chapter, you're completely invested in the crime and the characters involved. I enjoyed all the POV chapters. Each character brought an emotional element to the plot. THE NIGHT SHIFT is a tense page-turner-- one of my favorite 2021 reads.
3 stars to this enjoyable, yet flawed, slasher/thriller.
While I didn't find this book as entertaining as the author's previous one, it still held my attention. I enjoyed having Agent Keller reappear, although the fact that she was 8 months pregnant with twins while running all over town investigating a murder had me rolling my eyes (seriously, did the author not have one female editor tell him how unrealistic and ridiculous that is??). I liked the other POV characters as well, although I wish there had been more character development in general, as I never felt fully connected to anyone. The twists and turns were well done, except the ending was too over the top and abrupt.
This one was super spooky - very much unexpectedly so. There were so many moments where I had to put this down or was genuinely nervous to turn the page. Love the side story of the wandering YouTuber, and generally enjoyed the primary characters. Good, but not overly memorable.

I feel as though I've been duped. The synopsis made this book sound like a nostalgic, slasher style horror set in a Blockbuster on New Year's Eve, 1999. That is not what this book is. It is a standard detective thriller taking place in 2015 with a grand total of about 5 scenes taking place in '99, all flashbacks. I couldn't be more disappointed.
I really don't have much to say about this. It was pretty bland, pretty formulaic. The twists were mostly obvious and I didn't care enough about the characters to care about the twists that weren't so obvious. Information we'd already learned was repeated over, every time a different character learned it, and we had 3 MC's all investigating the same murder, so there was a lot of repetition. There were also some really weird microagressions in the narration, mostly racial, that soured me on the author before I even really got into the story, so that didn't help.
I wish the synopsis had been honest about what the book was because it's probably fine for people who like this genre. I am not one of them and I never would've requested it had I known what I was getting into.
It’s New Years Eve 1999 and everyone is panicking about the impending Y2K potential end of the world scenario. However, while most people have started to celebrate there is 3 teenagers waiting to close up shop at the local Blockbuster. When two of the staff members go to the back staff area and find one of their co-workers dead they are also attacked.
15 years pass after this terrible tragedy when horror strikes again. A bunch of teenagers are attacked and killed at a local ice cream shop. It is now up to a local FBI Agent along with the one survivor of the Blockbuster massacre to figure out who the killer is.
This is the authors second book and he is becoming a must read for me. The two books are vastly different but equally amazing. I would say the first one is more psychological thriller and this is a straight thriller/murder mystery. I thought the writing of this one was very well done and I devoured this book in a couple days. This is another great example of a book that could easily be made into a movie. I suggest everyone grabs this one when it comes out in March of 2022.
This was a really interesting read! It starts off with a bang describing the events of 1999 and hooked me right from there. I love multiple POVs and this one has three. It alternates between Ella- the lone Blockbuster survivor, Chris- the brother of the vanishing suspect, and Keller- the FBI agent working the case. All perspectives were equally interesting to me.
The chapters were short and that's also something I love in a book. There were several twists perfectly placed along the way that I didn't see coming and I really enjoyed the way the characters' stories connected. My only gripe is that the ending felt a little abrupt for my personal taste.
Overall I think mystery and thriller fans will like this one! Thank you to #netgalley and #minotaurbooks for the advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!
I really enjoyed this one! I didn't see the twist coming at all and I loved the relation to the past crime and the more current one. Thinking about Blockbuster brought me back to my childhood too so all in all a wonderful thriller! Definitely pre-order it or add it to your list for 2022!
All the love for The Night Shift!! I was a huge fan of the author’s last book. It was another 5 ⭐️ for me so I was thrilled when this one proved to be just as good. Highly recommend adding to your reading list. Can’t wait for the next book from this author.
Enjoyed this one. Creepy though. I will say that this one meandered a bit through the characters and I felt as though it could be tighter. Could just be me though. I enjoyed Finlays first book better. Sophomore slump, perhaps?
Also honestly I read this one a while ago and forgot about it until just now so it’s hard for me to fill up the review. My apologies.
Wow! The Night Shift by Alex Finlay is a fast paced thriller that kept me guessing. I read this book in one sitting and was not disappointed with the ending. I enjoyed the nostalgia of revisiting Blockbuster of the 90’s, despite the grim turn of events in the novel. The cast of characters is vast, but didn’t bog the story down and each of them provided their own twists and turns throughout the story.
Thank you NetGalley and Macmillan for proving me the opportunity of reading this book, in exchange for my honest review.
New Years Eve, 1999. 4 teens and their manager were finishing up their shift at Blockbuster when a murderer struck. The lone survivor, Ella, never recovered mentally. 15 years later, she is working as a therapist when an eerily similar murder takes place at an ice cream store. The police are hoping for evidence that links the current murders to the cold ones from 15 years ago. Their number one suspect has been MIA ever since and they are hoping to find him to close both cases.
This was a FAST paced, intense read with lots of characters and time jumps. I enjoyed the nostalgia of Blockbuster, and I loved how the FBI agent was pregnant with twins. (I’m a twin ha) but I thought Alex Finlay does what he does best. Pointing you in a different direction and absolutely pulling the wool over your eyes, leaving you with an amazing twist at the end you could never see coming. I have loved both Alex Finlay novels and I look forward to reading more!
Fifteen years separate two brutal murders in the same town. Similarities in both lead locals to fear that Vince, the escaped, alleged perpetrator of the first, has returned. Chris, his younger brother, is a lawyer who hopes to clear his brother of involvement in both incidents. Ella, the lone survivor from the first, is a counselor working with Jesse, the lone survivor of the recent crime. These are some of the bridges between the two crimes and they, along with other connections, move the storyline along at the pace I have come to expect from an Alex Finlay thriller. His twists and turns and surprising connections keep the plot moving and the reader’s interest engaged. It is a work filled with poor decision-making, selfish people and tense moments. I look forward to his next novel.
Two murder mysteries in one small town. Are they related? Is there a serial killer on the loose? Alex Finlay spins a great mystery that you can't put down!
This was my first book by Alex Finlay and I really enjoyed his writing. Two sets of murders in New Jersey 15 years apart are somehow connected - one at a Blockbuster video store and the more recent at an ice cream store. In both cases, high school students are brutally murdered. FBI agent Sarah Keller works with local NJ police to try to solve the ice cream store case and she starts looking into connections with the Blockbuster case. The sole survivor of the Blockbuster case, Ella Moore, is now a therapist. Ella is brought in to work with the sole survivor of the ice cream store, Jesse Duvall. There are lots of interesting twists and it’s a fast, easy read. Thanks to #stmartinspress #minotaurbooks and #netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Alex Finlay does it again. A well crafted mystery/thriller that will keep you guessing as the twists unravel. My initial guess of the killer was correct, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't waffle on it a little bit. I loved this take on a final girl, especially when Ella and Jesse meet for the first time. There's a lot going on in this book, but I loved that it exists in the same universe as Every Last Fear through Sarah Keller. This book flies by and was just really enjoyable!

I would definitely be recommending this book to readers on my Instagram bookstagram account.
This book started off with a bit of a negative vibe for me. However, I did enjoy the plot and trying to figure out the two separate cases.
Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a copy to honestly review.
Was a DNF for me unfortunately. The writing was good but I could not engage with the characters. I believe a lot of readers will most likely enjoy this book but the story wasn't for me. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.
I really enjoyed Finlay’s first novel, so I was really excited to get my hands on The Night Shift - and I was not disappointed. This one is a little slower paced than Every Last Fear, but still VERY well done and interesting. I definitely did not see the ending coming, in any way. Great sophomore book!
