I loved the idea of this book and the fact it’s based on the movie Three Coins in the Fountain, but I did not feel as connected to this story as I wanted to. I enjoyed the setting of the book I didn't like any of the characters. I just couldn't connect to any of them. However, since this is the debut novel by the author, I would read something in the future as I like her writing style.
I love books with strong Delmas characters that learn about themselves and form unlikely friendships. I also love books based in travel locations and vacation. This book has it a.
If you're looking for an atmospheric escape to Rome, this is the book for you. We follow three American women who have found themselves down on their luck in one of the most beautiful places in the world and how their lives delicately intersect. It's a story of love and life and rebuilding.
Trigger warning: Lots of diet talk, mentions of eating disorders
THREE COINS by Kimberly Sullivan is a book that brings you to Italy & lets you drop in on the friendships of three women as they navigate family, friendship, and career. Set in Rome, the book can feel like a vacation as you are transported to the the women’s lives in another country. The three women were so different, they have an unlikely friendship group. It was nice to get to know each of them and they provided a good foil for one another. Trigger warning: a situation that was an incomplete drug facilitated sexual assault.

Three Coins by Kimberly Sullivan was such a fun premise! Three American women are unlucky in love in Rome. Their paths cross at an off season beach town stay and as luck would have it each create a big impact on the other.
This one was a slower start for me. I’m also giving a sexual assault trigger warning which I didn’t expect when I first started this book.
I would love to return to Italy for a third visit now. But first I would need to watch the movie that inspired the ladies' attitude towards life and romance in the Eternal City. For sure, I would look for the 'plaque'.

Any book set in Rome is being added to my to be read pile, I have wanted to go forever. The title of the book and the story is associated with an old film Three Coins in the fountain from 1954, and the film is discussed as the basis for the book. I haven't actually seen the film so not sure if that is the only similarity.
The story is about three women all very different, brought together over the film who go on to form an unlikely friendship. There is Emma, an American expat living in Rome unable to count on her husband to help her with the children as he is off around the world with one of his many conquests. American, Tiffany, who dreams of becoming a star, and is used by men whilst she tries to get where she wants to be. And finally Annarita, an Italian-American who teaches English to over-privileged Italians and regularly has her heart trampled by boyfriends all wrong for her.
To be honest whilst I enjoyed the setting of the book I didn't actually like any of the characters. I just couldn't connect to any of them. This is the debut novel by the author, I would definitely read something in the future as I like her writing style, I just didn't like these particular characters.
4 stars. A very enjoyable read about 3 women who all make massive (and needed) changes in their lives. Set against the backdrop of Rome, it made me want to book a ticket and go indulge my tastebuds and feast my eyes.
Many thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

4.5🌟 stars
I really enjoyed Three Coins; once I got stuck in I just did not want to stop reading. The three heroines (divorcee Emma, wannabe starlet Tiffany and language tutor with a knack for cooking Annarita) went through some rough times initially as they struggled to make it in Rome. All three are transplanted Americans, each with a different dream but their experiences, some outright dangerous, have taken the gloss off of the fairytale. But for them, returning to the States would be even worse.
I liked these women and loved author Kimberly Sullivan's easy to read writing style. Plus, the way she wove the 1950's movie Three Coins in the Fountain into their growing friendship. AND, of course, the lovely visits to familiar streets and sights in Rome and Todi. I have not roamed there for decades but this story brought the flavor of the Italian lifestyle all back to me.
I wouldn't characterize this as deep, but neither is it light as body shaming, date rape drugs, male power plays against women in the entertainment industry, serial infidelity and drug use all make their way into the story. It's all the more interesting for them. At heart it's women's fiction with a hefty slice of romance and gal pals who get their very positive ending.
Thanks to the author and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book, but I liked it so much I ended up buying it! This is my voluntary and honest opinion
The beauty and allure of Rome come alive in Kimberly Sullivan’s recent debut, Three Coins. Paralleling the 1950s movie Three Coins in the Fountain, the novel wraps us in the present-day stories of three American women struggling to keep their lives together in the magical city.
Emma, Tiffany, and Annarita walk very different paths socially and economically, but each considers herself a failure in love. When they meet at an off-season resort, a tentative friendship takes root. As they begin to trust and support each other, their own confidence grows, enabling them to open themselves to opportunities, changes, and even love. I really enjoyed watching their emotional journeys and friendship unfold, backed by lovely descriptions, well-fleshed out characters, and the romantic notion of tossing coins to make wishes come true.
Thanks to the author and Netgalley for providing an ARC of this engaging novel.
This book landed in my Did Not Finish pile. It was really hard to feel a connection to the three main characters. I felt that they weren't very likable and that their stories didn't draw me in which made reading a chore. I wanted to love this book because who doesn't want a Romance Novel set in Italy.
loved this one. Felt like I got transported to Italy. It was a fun, quick read for me and loved how it played off the movie! Thank you Netgalley for the ARC!
Fun and amazing read. I kept daydreaming about visiting Italy thanks to this book. Loved the relationships this book spotlighted. Overall an amazing read
A great female friendship novel set in Rome. Emma, Tiffany and Annarita meet at an offseason resort trying to deal with personal issues. Each are from America and came to Rome for various reasons. At the resort, the owners show the women the movie, Three Coins in a Fountain, and the women love it. They foster their friendship when they return to their lives and their friendship helps them grow into the women they are destined to become.
A sweet story that fosters the idea that women's friendships can help them survive and thrive. The backdrop of Rome makes the story even more perfect. A great novel!
I really enjoyed this book. First of all, I felt like I was visiting Italy – which is really wonderful when I haven’t traveled at all because of the pandemic. I definitely miss visiting Europe. The author really makes Italy come alive. I loved the message about the value of female friendships, and I thought the three characters were all very different and aptly portrayed. I especially loved their discussions about what is happiness for women, what women should be striving for now, and what has changed in terms of women’s lives since the 1950’s (and the film Three Coins, which I now want to see). I also loved the grandmother Renata’s advice to find someone who appreciates you.
Fun and cute read that I would highly recommend. I loved the movie Three Coins in a Fountain when I was young so I loved that the story was a bit similar. This book was a breath of fresh air. Thank you to Netgalley for the advanced copy!!!
2.5 stars. Three Coins in a Fountain follows the lives of three women over several months. Despite an engaging beginning the book seemed to drag. It was hard to connect to any of the main characters, they all seemed shallow and self absorbed. The love stories felt forced. The women felt weak for the way they were waked all over by men. Not my favorite read
I loved the idea of this book and the fact it’s based on the movie Three Coins in the Fountain. The story is told in the narrative of each of the three women. I found the stories of each of these women to be entertaining, but I did not feel as connected to this story as I wanted to be.
Let me explain. The story of these three women becoming friends felt a little forced on me. It felt like they had very little in common and hardly enough to carry on a friendship once they returned to Rome. Having said that, I did enjoy the way their lives began to intersect and the beneficial relationship that was eventually formed.
One of the other things that took away from my enjoyment of the book was the way many of the Italian men were portrayed. Most of these men were arrogant and chauvinistic and I abhorred the way they were treating women. I did enjoy the male characters who respected women - a situation in which I have come to expect in life and in the books I choose to read.
All in all, I did enjoy this book. The first third of the novel reveals the individual storylines which felt a little disconnected but I appreciated the book more as it went along. The romances found in the book are both expected and surprising.
What I Liked:
-The beneficial relationship of the three women
-The discussion of Italian food and the character’s surroundings.
-The romances in the book
My rating: 3.5 stars
I liked this book!
I enjoyed reading about all of their lives and it was great. All three girls had my heart as they overcame all of their struggles. It was a well-written and heartwarming story I definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to read it.
Three women living in Rome meet in a rural inn and seemingly have little in common. But, as time goes on and they return to their homes in Rome, their paths eventually intersect again. This is a story of love, betrayal, and ambition, all set in lovely Rome. If you like reading about strong women, this would be a good choice. I enjoyed reading their stories and how each woman responded to disappointments. The title references back to the movie "Three Coins in the Fountain" and there are some parallels. I definitely recommend this book!
