A Very Dark Turn….
A dysfunctional family cracks further when Helen Whitmore’s stepson brings home a girlfriend. A normal course of events? Perhaps not. Breaking point is surely not far away when events take a very dark turn indeed. Wholly immersive domestic noir, effectively and perfectly narrated in a dual timeline, with characters you will love to hate, a compelling storyline and twists aplenty. An immensely entertaining, one sitting read.
Written over separate timeliness this book will have you completely invested in finding out just what happened. The characters are so well written that it's impossible not to be fully captivated by the events that are going on. I guarantee the second you finish this book, you will be online hunting down the authors back catalogue and searching for more of her brilliance to enjoy

Dawn Goodwin has redeemed herself in my eyes with this one. It is done in my favourite format of duel timelines. When Helen's son brings a new girlfriend home and said girlfriend finds a photograph that could reveal a long buried secret, Helen worries because the person who had the photo is supposed to be dead...Then someone is MURDERED! This was a very intense read with lots of suspense and falls into the domestic thriller category. This family certainly puts the fun in dysfunction I tell you. And when you finally get to the big reveal there is one more big twist for the reader that I didn't see coming. I loved Helen as a character and reading about her background. This was such a quick and enjoyable read.
Scary secrets from the past are best kept hidden, however, the appearance of a new girlfriend of the protagonist’s stepson throws her orderly life into turmoil and no one is safe anymore. A terrific and suspenseful read!
Thank you Aria & Aries, NetGalley and Author for this advanced ebook copy!
As soon as I seen What I Never Told You I waited so patiently for this to hit NG so I could request!
The description intrigued me and I'm here to say the book did not disappoint either.
Dawn Goodwin knows how to write a great psychological thriller.
I enjoyed this so much I went to my Kindle store and thank goodness for Kindle Unlimited because I've gotta read her other novels and The Pact and Best Friends Forever are on my tbr list as we speak. 😊
Helen has taken great care to keep her past hidden at bay.
One night Helen's step-son brings home his girlfriend Diana and she wants to stir the pot with trouble.
Soon after a picture surfaces to the shore a secret Helen has worked hard to keep hidden.
But how can that picture turn up now? Because the only person who could have had the photo is dead!
Automatically she suspects her step-sons girlfriend is behind thus somehow. And she needs to talks to Diana now. Oddly enough before she can confront her Diana is found dead!
Could this family have done something horrible to keep secrets buried?
Read this outstanding book to find out!
I devoured this page turning story. In a matter of hours and before I knew it the book was over!
You have no damn idea who to trust here and that's what I loved the most!
Dawn has written a fantastic and emotionally charged thriller complete with oodles of secrets, lies, and drama.

What I Never Told You by Dawn Goodwin
Helen , unhappily married , two step children and a grown up son of her own.
One day the son brings home his nosy girlfriend , Then something terrible happens and life unravels for everyone.
As the story unfolds , we are taken back to Helens childhood , where secrets are revealed.
I enjoyed the timelines and they way they were interacted with the plot . Quite suspenseful , with a few good twists. A clever ending.
What I never told you is a pretty decent domestic psychological thriller, which is one of my new favorite genres.
The MC Helens stepson brings home a new girlfriend who dredges up Helen's past and a photo comes to light, next thing you know the girlfriend is dead! Don't want to say too much more and ruin it for the next reader!
The suspense is definitely there in this book and the flow was quick enough that I tore through it and one sitting! I would definitely recommend to anyone that likes mysteries and or psychological thrillers / thrillers.
Thank you to netgalley and the publisher for this Arc in exchange for a honest review.
Such a gripping read that i couldnt put down, it was completely beguiling and drew me right in and didnt let me go, I couldnt wait to see how it played out, I really enjoyed it.
Hmmmm this book had some suspense, intrigue, action, and was worth reading but it didn't grab me or have my heart pounding?! I don't know it just didn't hold my attention for some reason?! But it was a decent read! Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for sharing this book with me!
Teased along by a dual timeline, readers gain insight into Helen Whitmore’s dysfunctional family. She’s stuck in a precarious spot; unhappily married, two stepchildren who hate her, a biological child who doesn’t respect her and a past that someone doesn’t want to stay buried. How do you dig yourself out of such a situation? Where did she go wrong?
As if balancing a dysfunctional family isn’t enough, her stepson brings home his trouble causing girlfriend and Helen senses that the girlfriend is nosing around where she shouldn’t be looking. When an old photo is found it threatens Helen’s secret and the intrigue increases as the only person who had the photo is dead.
Next, one of them is found dead….
Helen’s present timeline is supported by a narrative told in the past which reveals her childhood and factors which contribute to her present circumstances. Readers are instantly hooked with the suspenseful prologue and are propelled to uncover the identity and circumstances of these unnamed people.
Goodwin, known for writing about personalities hiding behind masks, always seems to create characters with distinct personalities and writes to expose the secrets they harbour. She explores the idea that we don’t know each other as well as we’d like to think we do – yes, even those close to us.
A quick, suspenseful, cleverly plotted and executed domestic psychological novel with lots of tension, conflict and unlikely twists, this is a fantastic read.
Publishes October 14, 2021.
I was gifted this advance copy by Dawn Goodwin, Aria & Aries, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review.
This is the first of Dawn Goodwin's books which I have read. I have a number of them on my to be read list but other books have kept getting in the way of me starting them.
My next job is now to go back and get the rest of them read!
This was a hugely enjoyable novel about a woman, Helen, with a dysfunctional family set up. Unhappily married, with her own child and two step children who don't really like or respect her.
Her son brings home a girlfriend who clearly knows more about Helen's life than she should and when the girlfriend is found dead, there is more than one person who had reason to want her dead.
The story is told in two timelines with the present day told alongside Helen's childhood which finally unveils the reason for everything which is happening in the current day.
When the story is finally revealed and everything is out in the open, Goodwin hits you with a final plot twist that you may or may not see coming (I didn't!)
I really enjoyed the dual timelines and Goodwin teases the reader along well. I am not sure if the story was told a little too slowly or whether that was just my impatience to find out what really happened!
Either way, it is a very enjoyable read and the character of Helen is very complex both as a child and an adult.
Thanks to Aria and Aries and Netgalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review. I would highly recommend everyone to read this
