I was lucky to get a sneak peek at the first book in the series and I was hooked from the very first paragraph. Superpowered kids and a nonsuperpowered boy who just happens to be the principal’s son thrown together in middle school. That is a recipe for conflict! And we get a taste of that right away as Cole and Boulder, a student with super strength, face off in the parking lot before school. It is our first look at what fuels this story. STEM versus superpowers.
Readers will love Cole, a clever and snarky character, as well as the supers he goes to school with. Thorn, Ghost, and Bolt. The Cole Champion books are, in part, about Cole proving that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics can be just as powerful as superpowers. But they are also stories about egos, friendships, and learning to work together. The perfect ingredients for middle grade books.
When everyone has a super power and you have to deal with it every single day, what would you feel?
As a teenager, Cole Percival Champion (what an aesthetic name!) he has to grab the excellent education opportunity at the Honor, Endurance, Resolve Optimism Junior High like a good mommy boy.
At HERO you have to show off your talent. Four Supers (kinds of Avenger or something😅), Ghost, Thorn, Boulder and Bolt make Cole's life more miserable. Competition is their thing.
But what happen when they discovered that Cole has a super power too. With the power of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic, thanks to his father, he has a sidekick, an artificial intelligence and his bestfriend, Mireya. They help Cole to cope awkwardly at the new school.
This book teach me a lot about a taboo in our school days. We have to deal the same type of person. Run away is not a good idea. Rebecca J. Allen shows that challenges must be accepted with a brain.
I give 5 ⭐
Thanks to NetGalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review. Watch out for the publication day on January 2022.
Cole Champion is not happy that he has to go to a school with a bunch of superheroes. That is until he taps into his own stem superpowers. I loved the humor and how Rebecca Allen weaves in intriguing stem facts, even including a Superpower Spotlight in the back of the book. I can’t wait for the next book in this series. This is a SUPER-fun read and sure to appeal to kids, parents, teachers, and librarians!
I received a copy of this middle grade novel through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I found the story to be rather sweet and educational. It would suit well children who have interest in science and its applications but could very well make science intriguing for those who aren’t exactly fond of it. It had charming illustrations and it was adventurous! Great start for a potential book series! 😊
Thanks so much to Jolly Fish Press and Netgalley for the earc to read and review.
This book reminded me so much of Sky High the Disney movie with all the kids having super powers expect the lead and he doesn’t feel like he fits in at the supers school, he has a crush on the nature flower growing super, views the strong kid as a bully. It was very similar or at least it felt it to me.
I loved that this had a huge science lesson within the whole book, so much that kids get to learn and understand, it had fun with all the supers and everything that they can do, it was great that Cole offered a different type of super power to the mix.
I think this would be a good book for any kid that is starting to show signs of enjoying science and STEAM as it will help them, plus it has superhero students and of friendship slowing forming in unexpected ways.
