Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. This wasn't my favorite thriller by far. The subject matter just didn't resonate with me.
Thank you to NetGalley, Darcey Bell and Simon & Schuster Canada for the free e-book in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved this novel and I was immersed right away and really wanted to just sit with this book and be left alone. The dark, creepy house was amazing and I always love journal entries in a novel. The gas lighting has been done in so many novels, but this one felt unique and wasn't the main theme of the novel. My jaw literally dropped with the twist towards the ending, but then the epilogue came along and ruined it for me. I think it was a good idea, but I could have done without it.
The book started out slow but I was soon drawn into the story of Hideaway Home and it’s new owners Ben and Emma. Bell had me questIoning if Emma was in fact seeing things or if something more sinister was happening. I really liked the introduction of different perspectives in the last part of the book, seeing how the story unfolded for these different characters. But the book really fell short for me with the last chapter, it felt unnecessary and made me question everything I had just read.
Unfortunately this one was a miss for us. We did enjoy the atmosphere (creepy secluded mansion), but the characters felt flat and the story dragged a lot in the middle. We finished it to see what would happen, but the ending was disappointing and confusing… there are so many other great books in this genre that have similar themes and are better-executed. I would skip this one (sorry to the author!).
This book was not for me. It was promising at first. The synopsis was amazing and so was the first quarter of the book. Then it went downhill. FAST. The second half makes absolutely no sense. The story is all over the place and the ending felt super rushed and made zero sense. What did I just read?
Thank you NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for providing a copy of this ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Wow! This book was full of twists and turns. When Ben falls in love with a beautiful mansion with a past, Emma decides to go all in on her husbands dream. Moving into a project house while being pregnant isn’t easy, but Emma commits to the project for Ben. Almost immediately things are not as they seem, and Emma fights to figure out what is true and what is not. The plot leads the reader down many surprizing twists, struggling to stay one step ahead of the story line. Although I didn’t like the ending, I appreciated the twist that no one saw coming.
Good read.
* I received an advanced reader’s copy of this book from NetGalley and Atria/Emily Bestler Books and Simon & Schuster Canada in exchange for my honest review.
I truly don’t know how to rate this book. For the most part it was an okay 3 stars. Nothing too exciting, gaslighting story line, felt like I’ve read similar books in the past but Hideaway Home and the big Oak tree had me intrigued. However, I very strongly disliked the ending. Based on the ending this is 2 stars but I’m giving it a 3 because I don’t want the ending to take away from the rest of the rest of the story.
Thank you NetGalley Simon & Schuster Canada for the advanced digital copy of this book. All opinions in this review are my own
I was super excited to receive “All I Want” prior to publication, and as my first read of the year, it seems 2022 is off to a promising start!
This was a relatively quick read that I struggled to put down and really flew through. The descriptions throughout this novel were so vivid, I have no doubts this will be able to be successfully translated onto screen (fingers crossed).
Full disclosure, I had high hopes for this novel after reading Bell’s previous novels (like so many others), and although I liked it, I won’t lie in that I am a bit unsure of how I feel about the ending/story’s overall execution. What was floating on as a pretty strong 3.5 star read, sort of abruptly caught me off guard. Got me on a final twist, but not sure I liked it, I would have loved to seen a few more pages that *no spoilers* could’ve been an epilogue. Overall, the ending will definitely give people something to talk about..
Big thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada, Atria/Emily Bestler Books for this ARC!
3.5/5 (that ending has me feeling some sort of way!)
Thank you NetGalley, Simon & Schuster Canada, Darcey Bell Well, this was a special, interesting and different kind of read. I like it...did I? This was how it was while I was reading it. I was just wondering what was going on all the time. I really enjoyed it though. I was suppose to be strange and it was not to be taken serious either. If you like odd reads you would like this. I do not really know how to review this one. It is about a house...haha!
Psychological thrillers are not all written equally…… All I Want is a psychological thriller that’s not to be missed- great descriptive writing, theatrical references and suggestions of infidelity - a great combination!
Thank You to Simon & Schuster Canada, NetGalley and Darcey Bell for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I was instantly absorbed in this story of Emma and Ben and the Victorian House they're renovating. I wouldn't exactly call this a thriller it is more of a physiological drama and a really good one at that. I admit this book isn't going to be for everyone but I found it very unique and I couldn't wait to get to the end to find out what the heck was going on.
This is a very suspenseful read with a gothic vibe and lots of tension, it is also very descriptive and atmospheric. What I really liked is the fact that you'll be asking questions the whole time you're reading this one...is Emma crazy?...Is the house haunted?...Who is that lady with the baby?...The best part was the ending as it was dramatic and had the WTF factor. I really appreciated what the author did there.
