This cookbook left me feeling excited to get into the kitchen and cook something! The recipes are realistic and super tasty sounding…an entire section with just meatballs?! Yes please! I did find the prep times to be a little….optimistic but overall the recipes seemed like things I could absolutely make for my household. The blurbs before the recipes were also also charming and fun to read and I learned a few techniques.
Thank you to Net Gallery and element publishing for some sample pages of this cookbook in exchange for my honest review.
Just now discovering the Modern Proper blog which of course I found through Instagram. I loved this book. The recipes and pictures of the food were great! A lot of the recipes are pretty simple as well which I love. Highly recommend this cookbook to other foodies out there!
I became a fan of the food blog, The Modern Proper, through Pinterest years ago, so I was pleasantly surprised to see that there was an upcoming cookbook from the duo of Holly Erickson and Natalie Mortimer. My favorite thing about their recipes are that they are accessible, appetizing, and easy to make and the photography is beautiful. It’s rare to find a cookbook where I want to cook every single recipe and this book has it all.
I received this book from the publisher through Netgalley for review and all thoughts and opinions are my own.
The creators of the hugely popular website, The Modern Proper, focus on the weeknight dinner in this cookbook. If you lead a busy work week and want to capitalize on time management in the kitchen while providing healthy meals for your family, this is the cookbook for you.
My edition was a sampling of photos and recipes, not the full book.
Many interesting recipes with pantry essentials will be in the full cookbook.
Enjoyable read and beautifully photographed.
Phenomenal! Not only are the recipes in this book scrumptious-looking, but the book itself is a masterpiece of visual delight. I cannot wait to try the romanesco sauce on my next grilled cheese! Simple, easy-to-understand directions combined with elevated recipes make this cookbook a sure-bet for both the home cook as well as a perfect hosting gift.
As a longtime fan of Modern Proper’s blog, I was thrilled to see their first cookbook is being published! This one is full of great, easy-to-follow recipes that have great depth of flavor. Thank you to NetGalley for the advance copy!
I have reviewed several cookbooks and this one is unique and gorgeous.
First of all, the recipes are interesting and different from standard cookbooks. This maybe attractive to the more adventurous cook, but even those who are less inclined to go out of their safety zone, these recipes can be adapted using more typical ingredients. I noticed that many of the recipes had at least one ingredient that would be hard to find in a typical, rural grocery store. This could be a barrier for some and it would have been nice for more ideas for substitutions for these ingredients. Despite this, I think many cooks would be able to adapt to change an ingredient or seek out an ingredient if not typically available.
That being said, the lay-out of the cookbook is beautiful and usefully arranged. I enjoyed the recipe lay-out and the photos to accompany them. The photography alone is stunning, even appearing fabulous on a tablet reader. I also appreciated the incorporation of ideas and flavors or styles of cooking in a single recipe. This makes so many of these recipes more inclusive for many different people. I can’t wait to try these recipes for myself and see if they taste as great as they sound and look!
I can’t wait to see the finished edition and highly recommend!

Wow, this book is chock-full of recipes and photos, with myriad types of recipes from easy to intricate. I liked that it wasn't just all common recipes you might normally find, but not so crazy that it would be impossible to try. Interesting and beautiful.
I was quite interested in these recipes because there are some that are vegetarian and I have a good friend who is vegetarian and I needed some good recipes…yet I didn’t want just a cookbook with Vegetarian recipes. Now I have a cookbook that has quite a few recipes that will make everyone happy.
Filled with yummy recipes and easy to follow instructions, you’ll be cooking something yummy in no time! If you can read and follow instructions, YOU CAN COOK with these recipes.
Thank you to the Simon Element and NetGalley for the advanced electronic copy of this book. The photos make the food very appetizing. Since this is a sample, I’m looking forward to getting the complete published copy in April 2022. I enjoyed looking through the recipes and am looking forward to sampling a few. Overall, a great cookbook to have and give as a gift.
Really loved this cookbook! From the recipes available, it has a lot of variety and options for every dietary restriction and preference. I have made a few Modern Proper recipes from their website and these feel like the same level of quality and ease, so I think I would enjoy adding this to my collection. Definitely interested in purchasing the hardcover when it’s released to get the full range of recipes!
Thank you NetGalley, and Simon Element for the sample of the book The Modern Proper. This is my personal review.
The sample pages of this wonderful cookbook make me look forward to getting the book when it is out for sale on April 5, 2022.
The photos in the cookbook make the food jump off the pages!
This sample had so many recipes I can not wait to make.
I found so many I can not wait to make for my family.
Stuffed spaghetti squash with lentil walnut Bolognese, spicy unstuffed pasta shells, crispy pork lettuce wraps, skillet fried pork cutlets and sweet and sticky pork with asparagus just to name a few. When I make these for my family, they will think I have become a top-notch chef!
This is a cookbook I would give to family and friends as a gift for their cookbook collections. I will be adding this to my own personal collection.
Adding another ARC to my Amazon pre-order list. This looks fantastic, it is the perfect blend of meat based and plant based recipes. The recipes read as easy to follow with healthy, obtainable ingredients. I don’t believe there is a single recipe that I didn’t want to try, they all look amazing.
I really wanted to like this but felt it was too specific to an audience I couldn’t relate to..that doesn’t mean that it won’t be useful to most. At
other times the cookbook photography and recipe aspiration and collaboration would be enough to keep me loving the read..not so much
now when I am looking for practical, easy and some sense of plated and colorful presentation.
The Modern Proper is somehow exactly the cookbook I want right this very minute. Flipping through the recipes at first I kept saying to myself "yes, this" over and over. I want to make it all! Some of the recipes are more idea than recipe (I don't need to be told exactly how to roast veggies), but the gorgeous photography made me pull out a half sheet pan and get roasting immediately. And add the delicious sauces and sides that the recipes provide to amp up otherwise simple ideas. Every beef recipe gets a nod from me, plus most of the vegetarian ideas at the start of the book. I can always convince my picky eater to go for meatballs, and the fact that there's a whole section just for meatballs is too perfect.
I'm off to make myself some soup from one of the recipes, or possibly the braised chickpea toast. Hope you enjoy this cookbook full of simple delicious and beautiful recipes as much as I do!
Thank you to NetGalley for a free advance review copy of The Modern Proper. This is a very exciting spring publication for when we are ready for fresh, clean yet still comforting flavors. There are many great recipes for all-day eggs, vegetarian mains, comforting chicken and more. There’s an entire chapter devoted to meatballs! The soup section is also really well rounded. This is cooking that reflects how we are eating now: flavorful, briny/salty at times, comforting, and everyone-friendly. By that I mean, I think many of these recipes would appeal to my two young kids, but also just be good on their own, for casual dinner parties, date nights, etc.
Recipes that sound original AND alluring:
Creamy Mustard Sauce Bucatini with Steak and Asparagus
Potluck Style Teriyaki Meatballs and Macaroni Salad
Carnitas in a Stew
Coconut Shrimp with Peanut Noodles
Cheesy Tamale Pie with Quinoa and Bean Chili
Spaghetti Squash stuffed with Lentil Walnut Bolognese
I’m not sure whether there’s a dessert chapter – I would hope there is, but no mention of it. My advance review copy stated that it wasn’t a complete version of the book.
This was a great cookbook and I really enjoyed reading through the recipes. I definitely found some that I will be making.
I wasn't familiar with The Modern Proper before coming across this book but I'm so grateful to be introduced. Their website and now book is all about creating accessible, efficient, and flavorful meals so that weeknight dinners can be just as special and bring everyone together around the table. This book is all about arming you with shortcuts, tips, and tricks to get dinner on the table faster without sacrificing. The ingredients are easy to access and throughout the book there are many options for swaps.
The book is broken up into the following sections (with the recipes that really stick out to me):
All Day Eggs - Jammy Eggs on Lentils with Wilted Greens & Crispy Ginger Ramen Noodles
Meatless - Stuffed Portobello Mushrooms & Pan-Fried Polenta with Blistered Tomatoes and Burrata
Chicken - Coconut Rice Bowl with Cilantro Lime Chicken
Pork and Beef - Skillet Pepperoni Pizza with Blistered Tomatoes
Seafood - White Fish in Orange Butter Sauce & Salmon and Jojos with Tartar Sauce
Meatballs - Miso Ginger Meatballs with Cabbage & Baked Chicken Souvlaki Meatball Wrap
Soup - Carnitas in a Stew & Spicy Salmon Chowder
Things for Dipping, Spreading, and Dressing - Buttermilk Ranch Dressing
I love the way the book is broken up - the sections are very manageable and easy to navigate. I also appreciate that there are a good amount of vegetarian recipes. The images are stunning, I love the dynamic colors and food styling. As promised, the recipes are pretty easy and accessible across the board.
This is the perfect book for someone who is looking to cook more, is a beginner, needs quick recipes, or is just looking for simple inspiration. Basically, that is everyone. I think this will become a quick classic that will be reached for often, especially on Weeknights.
The Modern Proper is one of my go-to cooking blogs, so when I saw they were releasing a cookbook I was thrilled! The book itself is absolutely beautiful, with stunning pictures that make everything look delicious. This was only a partial sample of the book, but I was very impressed. The recipes sound like something you'd get at a fancy restaurant, but everything is so easy to make! There is a sizeable meatless chapter as well, so this could be a great addition to kitchens with dietary restrictions. I will be purchasing this book when it comes out.
Honestly; this one has some absolutely fantastic and destroy easy recipes. I would highly highly recommend it. Plus the sleek images of the dishes make from a really appealing cookbook
