The Bad Mood by Moritz Petz with illustrations by Amelie Jackowski looks as if it was originally published in 2004 in Switzerland. In fact, the end paper says it's a "beloved classic." It's a beautiful book about a badger who wakes up in a bad mood and thoughtlessly spreads it to everyone he meets. He then has to fix things.
What I particularly like about this book is that Badger's mood lifts, not because someone points out the error of his ways, but because the mood "slipped right off him" while he's working outside. There's no lecture here about the value of physical activity on the mind, but we do see something positive happening.
Nor is there a lecture on making things right with those you've wronged. Again, we just see it happening.
Show, through story and image, don't tell. A lovely book.
Another Badger book is coming next April.
This book covers how being in a bad mood can affect others. The protagonist is rude and unkind to everyone who is trying to be nice to him, alienating pretty much everyone. However, when he finally snaps out of his bad mood, he realizes how he hurt his friends and tries to make amends by throwing a party and apologizing. The book ends there, but I feel it would have been more powerful if it had gone a little deeper and explored how one can be in a bad mood and not take it out on others.
This is a pretty great picture book, though I do wish the words were a bit bigger and had more spacing between the lines. The formatting of the text seemed more like an afterthought than most picture books I'm familiar with. The messaging itself is very solid, though, and I appreciated the art of all the woodland animals and their 'bad moods.' Very cute, and a great story for kids with a great lesson to go along with it.
A lovely heart warming book about treating others with respect and how our moods affect others. The illustrations are wonderful and sparked up conversations about the story. The narrative itself is amusing but heartfelt. The hard copy will be on my shopping list this Christmas. I know many small people who would treasure this ,soon to be classic, little book.
Badger wakes up in a bad mood. He ignores many off his friends but as the day continues his mood improves. It's then he realises many of his friends are in bad moods because of him.
It's a great book and I feel early readers may be able cope with it. The illustrations are awesome.
Some discussion may be necessary especially with Badgers friends reaction. But I feel the discussion would be worth while.
Enjoy!
Oh this was absolutely delightful [and I cannot wait to recommend this one to all my friends who are parents to littles] and a great tool for parents/caretakers to use to talk about moods [good AND bad] and how they affect everyone around them [good AND bad] and the importance of seeking out those affected by one's bad mood or rudeness and asking forgiveness [and perhaps explaining just why they were in a bad mood - sometimes sharing is helpful as well]. Everyone has bad moods and this is a really good way to show how it can affect others and it also shows good ways to get rid of the moods that often negatively overtake us.
Along with this really lovely little story, you have some amazing illustrations by Amelie Jackowski; they are just perfect for the story and will also engage littles as you talk about what is going on in the pictures as well as the written story.
Very well done.
Thank you to NetGalley, Moritz Petz, Amelie Jackowski [Illustrator] and NorthSouth Book for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A charming story about a badger in a bad mood, what resulted from his actions and how he, with the help of a friend, made everything right. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, I do love what they did, I found it very funny, especially how you needed to be, to be invited. I’m still laughing! 😆
The illustrations are lovely. Beautiful artwork.
Kids will love this book and it will be a great way to have a discussion between parents and kids that our actions have consequences and how we treat others matters. To be careful of bad moods and that there is always a way to make things right with good wills.
I received a free copy of this book from the publishers via Netgalley. My review is voluntary.
This book is very relatable for all ages! Bad moods happen to each and every one of us and they are very contagious. Great book to share with the readers in your family of all different ages.
A beautifully illustrated book which tells the story of badger's bad mood and how it affects those around him. It is a perfect book for young readers and would be a great addition to any early years bookshelves.
I really loved the images in this book, they sorted the story really well too and brought the book to life.
I thought that the book had a really good flow to it and it was easy to follow.
I liked the underlying theme to the story too and how the bad mood was passed on.
My four year old daughter is learning all about being kind at the moment and she really enjoyed this one so it is a hit from me!
It is 5 stars from me for this one, very highly recommended!
Cute book - I’m not sure it wowed me enough to want to rush out and get it for my little one’s library, but I think there’s a good message. The art and illustrations however were fantastic, I really enjoyed the style and will definitely keep an eye out for this illustrator.
What a wonderful message to give to kids. It shows that there are consequences for the way you treat other people. I especially love the phrasing of "giving your bad mood to others" when you treat them that way because I think it's in very accessible language for younger kids to understand.
Everyone has taken their bad mood out on someone else or been the victim of another's bad mood. This little tale illustrates what can happen when you take your bad mood out on your friends. Using language and scenarios that are easy to understand, a badger in a bad mood angers his friends then must deal with the consequences. The illustrations are both cute and beautiful, with lovely color and very expressive little animal friends. This would be a great book to use as a social story to teach younger children and atypicals the consequences of their behavior.
My daughter and I both enjoyed reading this charming book about feeling grumpy and self-awareness. There is a gentle humour and the illustrations are absolutely gorgeous.
I absolutely loved The Bad Mood by Moritz Petz! This story teaches kids and adults alike how our moods, good or bad, can effect others. I believe The Bad Mood is a great conversation starter on how to introduce and teach kids how to talk and express their emotions safely. This book would be perfect to read in any type of story time--especially a life skills class. I highly recommend this book! Thank you to NetGalley and the Publisher for the opportunity to read this book. (My review is also on Goodreads.)
The Bad Mood by Moritz Petz is a great story about how one's mood can affect others and to hold one's self accountable for their bad mood & actions. This is a great lesson for children who are learning about their emotions or have difficulty expressing their bad mood. The illustrations are cute and well done. A great picture book for young readers. I would recommend this one!

This is a cute children's board book about a badger who is in a bad mood, so he is grumpy and rude to his friends.
His friends get upset with him and once he realises what he has done to them, he tries to make it right. This is a lovely story about how we should think about how we treat the people around us, and make sure we treat people with kindness, even if we don't feel so good ourselves. The book is very good, with a good message, and the images are bright and colourful.
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
When Badger wakes up in the morning, he knows at once he’s in a bad mood. He even recognizes that it’s a DANGEROUS mood. And he realizes that he might be better off staying home. But what fun is a bad mood if no one knows you’re in it? So Badger decides to go out after all. But that bad mood IS dangerous, and it soon spreads to everyone around him . . . with disastrous results.
We’ve all been there. We’ve been in a bad mood, and we want to make sure everyone knows it. But have you ever thought about what that bad mood does to others? The Bad Mood by Moritz Petz does just that, introducing kids to the idea that our behavior can impact others in a negative way—or in a positive way.
A perfect first book for those little ones who tend to take out their feelings on others, and those who don’t know yet HOW to control those emotions! Charming art by Amelie Jackowski elevates this story to one you won’t want to miss!
I feel like I connected with Badger on a whole other level. I need to definitely take a page out of Badger's book and not let my bad mood leech into the rest of my days.
I really enjoyed this book. It teaches a good lesson about why you should not be so rude towards others. The characters were well done and the story was cute.
