Four and a half stars.
What is it with re-imaginings of You've Got Mail (and yes I know that was itself a reimagining), this is at least the third one I've read this year?
This is glorious, Jessie gets a late night (aka 2am) voice message from her secret crush, asking if she's awake, it's clearly a misdial but how to respond? Jessie and her crush, Eliot get talking, they are both insomniacs and bond over trashy reality dating shows. Eliot doesn't know who Jessie is, he has a form of dyslexia and he clearly took Jessie's number for some reason but typed a random set of letters instead of her name, he's done it before and usually goes back and edits it with the correct name, but not in this case, so he calls her JD, which are two letters which are repeated in the gibberish he typed instead of her name.
What follows is a charming romance, Jessie can never reveal who she is to Eliot because of (very good reason) but Eliot is an open book to Jessie. It's cute, quirky and totally believable (unlike some of the re-imaginings), even better, it is the woman who knows all and there is none of the misogyny I see in the film.
Apparently this was originally an audio release which has now been released in print, I didn't know that was a thing, but I can see how that would work really well. I love how Eliot speaks women in his day-to-day life and tries to decide whether they sound like JD.
Loved, it, loved it, loved it.
I received a free copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
Sweet Talk made me SWOON. Eliot and Jessie are such polar opposites that work in the best way. I loved the pacing of the story and I love the way Bastone set up the reveal. So awesome.
I would like to thank the publishers and NetGalley for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I was not ready for how cute this book was! Once I got approved for this ARC, I did a bit of research on Cara Bastone and discovered that she writes oh so sweet romance books and my heart jumped for joy. This book truly did live up to those reviews and I couldn't believe how many adorable moments were weaved through this satisfying story.
The concept of an accidental phone call leading to a dreamy romance won me over and despite the book being concise, the characters were endearing and well developed. I found Eliot to be the perfect definition of cinnamon roll book boyfriend and loved that he did not shy away from how utterly bowled over he was by Jessie. I also appreciated the book containing no sex scenes as I feel that Bastone did a fantastic job of showing the chemistry between the lead MC's through their emotional connection. This is a great, light hearted read that is a true winner for any rom com lover, like myself!
I saw this on NetGalley and was like yup that looks like my kind of book! I judged by the cover and was not lead astray! This book was super freaking cute yall. I really enjoyed it and I basically inhaled it. I think I took me like 3-4 hours max to read.
This releases in October but was released as an audiobook earlier this year. So the book itself isn’t new new it’s just new to text.
This is a pretty short book and it’s a lot of dialogue so it was very easy to read. The premise is that Jessie gets a text from a man she only kind of knows and he texted her by mistake. Anyway they end up talking all night and then very regularly after that. He doesn’t know who she is and part of their fun is him trying to guess her identity. They are so sweet to each other and funny.
I would definitely read more from this author. It was definitely the lighthearted hug of a book I needed after the thriller I read right before this!
This was SUCH a cute read! I've never really been the biggest fan of cinnamon roll guys but I am obsessed with Eliot! He was just the absolute sweetest and was so kind and considerate. Jessie was such a badass and was effortlessly cool. It was so interesting to see how they were individually such dimensional characters and how even though they are polar opposites in every way, their personalities were the perfect match. Quick, easy, and enjoyable! Definitely would recommend listening to this instead of reading it though, because it is heavily dialogue.
Thanks to Netgalley and Headline Publishing for the ARC of this in exchange for my honest review. I also listened to the audio as part of my Audible Plus subscription.
This was so fun and cute! I loved that the characters started as an accidental phone call, and that for such a short book they seemed both very fleshed out personality wise. I was pretty worried from the get go about how I was feeling about the “secret” JD is keeping, because it seemed like a BIG one, but it was handled decently in the end. The audio was really fun to listen to, especially as almost all of the book is done as phone conversation
4.5 stars
I'm dying from the sweetness. I could not put this book down! It was laugh out loud funny, had real things going on, and was so original. I adored it and will be reading more by this author!
A great read, the second in this series.
Jessie receives a voice message in the middle of the night, and she never would have guessed who it is from.
Eliot doesn't know who he sent the message to, but wants to find out. As they spend more and more time messaging each other and becoming part of each others day, it's only a matter of time before he finds out who she is, and why she has been keeping it a secret.
Loved both characters and hope there will be more books in this series.
LOVED LOVED LOVED IT. Such a good book that I enjoyed reading every page. I loved the plot, I loved the characters and I loved watching the story unfold. It really is so good
I was looking for a pallet cleanser with this book… you know what I mean? Something fun and lighthearted between intense books. Whelp, I got more than I bargained for with this one and I couldn’t be happier about it!
First, thank you NetGalley, Cara Bastone, and Headline Eternal for giving me the chance to read this fantastic book!
It’s fun, it’s sweet, it’s surprisingly heart-wrenching, and I am here for all of it! I LOVE THIS TROPE. It starts with a wrong number text and how Bastone goes about it makes it delightfully believable. The characters she builds are simply amazing. I want to wax poetry about how unexpectedly dimensional they are, but we would be here all day and it would definitely have spoilers. So, just take my word for it—they are great!
It’s not often a book pulls tears out of me but, when it does, I love the book that much more for it. It pulled at my heartstrings!
I want to tell you more, but I also don’t want to spoil it. How about you go read it then message me so we can talk about it! PLEASE?
Cara, if you ever read this, bless you and your wonderful mind for bringing these characters to life. <3
Sweet Talk the second in the Love lines series is even better than first book Call Me Maybe. Jessie is up at 2am eating chocolate cake when she gets a “you up?” from Eliot who she’s sorta crushing hard for even though he’s totally not her type and they’ve hardly ever spoken. It’s a case of mistaken identity surely but they start to chat anyway bonding over insomnia and binge watching bad dating shows. But Jessie won’t reveal her identity not matter how charming Eliot may be.
And Eliot is pretty damn charming. He’s so pure. How could anyone not love him? And Jessie’s not bad either. They both have their demons, they both have a lot going on but they always end up calling back.
I really like this series, it’s a interesting take on the usual rom/com concept. I like that it’s largely dialogue, it makes it brisk and we still get to know the characters quickly and intimately. They fall in love with each other without seeing each other or even knowing who the other person is exactly. Their only contact is through the phone. It’s very well done. Bring on the next!
This is an adorable and thoroughly enjoyable read that I didn’t want to put down! Elliot is the cutest person to ever exist and I adored Jessie. This book had me hooked from the first line and I was up all night reading it.Even though most of the book was just them texting you could feel the chemistry between them.I highly recommend.
Full review will be up on my Bookstagram account during pub week and on goodreads! Jessie and Eliot are adorable together. This was a ton of fun to read. Eliot is a precious cinnamon roll and Jessie’s a bit of a badass.
I first stumbled upon Cara Bastone on Audible with Call Me Maybe and it was love at first words.
I love a story that starts off uniquely and meeting through drunk texting hit the mark for me. Jessie and Eliot start off texting each other regularly, and even from texts you could feel the chemistry between them. I loved their back and forth so much, and wish this was my very own meet cute. Eliot is not your typical hero, and I loved that more. The nerdy, more introverted guys never get the attention they deserve. I adored Jessie and wish we were BFF"s.
I loved how this tied in with book 1, Call Me Maybe. I'm always here for a good interconnected series and the Love Lines series has done this amazingly well.
4.5 Stars This was super cute and I still want these to be longer. The voices were chosen perfectly for both Elliot and Jessie and I was on the edge of my seat trying to figure out who JD was. I didn't put it together at all. One of the cutest rom-com series I've read in a long time and I beg Ms. Bastone to give us all more of these. CW for insomnia caused by a break in
