This was fine! It was entertaining and a quick read. I didn't necessarily love or hate anything about this book, but I will forget about it.
It was steamy and fun and there was good banter between the romantic leads, but the plot fell flat and the family dynamics were so outrages it made me so mad. The brother sucked and sister was so immature.
I think the premise was enticing and it started off really good, but as the story went along we didn't get much character development or a romance development really. It was just physical attraction.
I enjoyed it, but didn't love it.
Thank you Avon and Harper Voyager and Netgalley for this advanced reader's copy (ARC) in exchange for an honest review.
Sophie Jordan is a new author to me as I am new to reading historical romances. I really enjoyed the Rake gets Ravished and already added other Sophie Jordan books to my TBR list. Mercy was a great heroine who got what she wanted in her own way. I look forward to reading more by Sophie Jordan and others in the series.
I adored Silas and Mercy's story! I loved that Mercy would do anything to secure her home. Then because Silas was so intrigued, he hunted her down. So much fun!! 🥰
Silas and Mercy - what a delicious, if unexpected couple! This book is fast-moving, entertaining, and has bits of surprise thrown in! Sophie Jordan is a new author for me and I was not sure what to expect. I ended up loving this story, the characters, and the setting. A very good regency romance!
what a delightful book! I really loved the entire premise and found the plot to be so charming and fun. I definitely do not want that terrible brother to ever be a hero of his own book. that would be a disaster.
Spoiler alert.........
Mercy dresses up to go to a gambling den in London to steal iou because her brother lost the farm in a game with the club’s owner Silas Masters. (I do love books about clubs.) She gets caught by Silas and tries to seduce him. They have a steamy one- night stand. Mercy wanted to know about sex since she’s a virgin and has dedicated her life to her brother and sister on the farm. This is something just for her.
Not even 1/4 of the book (ch 3 and all of ch 4!) she has rousing sex. He says “show me what you’d like to do” she takes the bull by the horns.
Loved that she smelled of oranges not roses or lavender.
Funny—she looked relieved when she saw his c::: “it wasn’t the size of an elephant’s”.
Good descriptions of characters. However her brother acted entitled (they lived on a farm) and worthless—-her younger sister was wish washy. I was hoping Silas taught her brother how to be a good man instead of him going to New Zealand.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and the 2 main characters.
I received an advanced copy of this book.
This might just be my favorite Sophie Jordan book yet. This was a fantastic installment to the series, and I loved Mercy and Silas so much. Their chemistry was swoon worthy and you just know from the start that they belonged together. The book is full of witty banter, smexy love scenes, and I loved the secondary characters. The end was great,it was nice to see her brother face some consequences before getting our happy ending.
When her brother loses the family farm gambling, Mercy will do anything to get it back. She dresses as a loose woman and enters Silas' gambling den, intent on finding her brother's voucher and stealing it back. Silas finds her in his bedroom just after she finds the voucher. To stop any suspicions of why she's there she decides to ravish him. Using all the skills she's only read about in her brother's porn, she does just that. Graphic scenes include her nether lips and his rod. The next day, seeing blood on the sheets and realizing Mercy was a virgin, Silas tracks her to the farm. He's going to wait to see if she is pregnant. He grew up on the streets and will take care of any child of his. For supposedly being a ruthless gambling den owner, he is monogamous, kind, understanding, and helpful! Mercy has to deal with her terrible brother and bratty teenage sister, always scared her brother will lose their home again. She has no rights to it since her father left it only to her brother. High steam, a nefarious brother, and teen angst make for a fast-paced story.
Mercy Kittinger sneaks into a gaming hell to steal back her twin brother's voucher for their family farm. When she's caught by the owner, Silas Masters, she diverts him by seducing him, then disappears with the critical paper. Silas goes after her and the rest of the story takes place on the farm. Her brother, Bede, was an idiot, one of the worst I've read in a while. He's a lazy, cruel slob and is only interested in his own life, despite the fact that he'd been educated and theoretically trained to take care of the farm and his sisters. He not only gambled away the farm but then he compounded his loss by wagering one of his sisters to be married to an old man. Silas is a good man, not a rake, who made his own way as a youngster and who is fascinated by Mercy. Mercy is awesome, a strong woman who tries to keep things on track despite her idiot brother Bede and bratty younger sister Grace. Bede is lazy, cruel, and just objectionable. Grace is just a brat and her sudden transformation at the end is a bit confusing. And of course, there's a HEA.
It was nice to see Gwen (the female blacksmith) and Imogen from the previous book (she married Peregrine Butler). And despite a few editing errors -- bridal instead of bridle for the oxen team, and some of the names got confused -- this was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I can't wait for the next book.
DNF @ 15%. Despite having enjoyed Sophie Jordan’s books in the past and being really intrigued by the plot, this just didn’t hold my attention. I felt nothing towards the characters and writing was very meh, so I decided to put this down.
**thank you NetGalley and the publisher for providing an e-arc in exchange for an honest review**
A fun and light Regency era romance novel with steam that had me re-evaluating not having any Sophie Jordan novels in my collection. I loved the personalities of the main characters. There was no miscommunication between them, both mature and understanding and going for what they want.
Thank you to the publisher for a review copy! This book had a fun spin on the typical characters you find in HR books. The FMC was actually able to enjoy sex and not feel shame for it - mind blowing! That just does not get celebrated much in normal life nevertheless a historical romance book. And those sex scenes were steamyyyy.
My main disappointment was that the characters felt like just that, characters. Historical romance is one of my absolutely favorite genres and I've read a lot of it, and some of my favorites include characters who feel like real people. Like flesh and blood and my friends, and that just wasn't this book. Everyone was a bit two dimensional. All in all, this series has been a bit of a miss for me so I probably won't continue.
I enjoyed The Rake Gets Ravished by Sophie Jordan. I'll admit, sometimes Jordan's books are hit or miss with me but the characters were interesting and the story kept me turning the pages to see what was going to happen next.
It was a fairly quick read and while it is a second book in a series, I don't believe you have to read book one to be able to pick this one up. I'll be checking out the next book for sure!
Enjoyed this, it was short but I enjoyed the relationship between Silas and Mercy. It took a little bit too long for her to not be a pushover and her siblings were really flat as characters, but the wrap up was nice.
Absolutely loved this book! Mercy and Silas were so delightful. Grace was a bit annoying (as teenagers generally can be) but I hope we get to see her story someday. I'm looking forward to Gwen's book next.
This was a great installment to the series and, I loved Silas and Mercy, they had such great chemistry and it was clear from the start, that they belonged together. The book has witty banter, steamy love scenes, great secondary characters, elopements, shocking surprises, a loser brother who get his due, and finally a HEA. Silas is not a rake, far from it. I do wish Silas’ backstory had gotten a bit more page time, I also wish that he put up more of a fight in the end, but really those things are minor. Overall, a great story.
Sophie Jordan’s books are a sometimes a hit with me and sometimes it’s a miss. Unfortunately this one wasn’t my favorite. I felt that the chemistry between the characters just wasn’t there and I felt a bit bored with the story line. I also didn’t feel that there was any depth to the characters.
I thought that this book was really fun and super cute! I always love Sophie Jordan and her romance books, and this one was no exception! I loved the characters, I loved the romance between the two main characters, and I liked the plot! I loved Mercy as a character! I honestly felt bad for her at times too because it seemed like she could never catch a break with her siblings. If her brother wasn't trying to sell the ranch or being a dick to her, her sister was being a jerk to her and being bratty! Mercy was just doing the best she was able to and I felt like everything was always against her. Silas was funny and snarky! I liked his attitude and character throughout this book! I liked that when he and Mercy became friendly, and started like getting closer and more romantically intimate, he really seemed to care about her. And her family too! I just loved him so much and I thought that he was fantastically written! I loved his chemistry with Mercy! It was hot hot hot!! They made a good couple! Overall I highly recommend this series! It was super fun and the romance was very enjoyable! I always love Sophie's writing so I had a really good time reading this book! I recommend checking out the first book in this series but as most of Historical Romances are, you don't have to if you don't want to!
I really enjoyed this book. I really connected to Mercy and enjoyed her development. And Silas, gotta love him. He was not what I expected and I was glad of that.
Sometimes I judge a book by how fast I read it and this one I blew through in a couple of hours. Sometimes, I just need an enjoyable story and this did that for me. Mercy is doing her best to keep the family farm going, despite her brother's best attempts to ruin them. When he loses the estate in a card game, Mercy decides to steal the deed back. When she's caught by Silas, she seduces him and enjoys herself before leaving at dawn with the deed. Silas discovers the theft and realizes that Mercy was a virgin and shows up at the farm because no one steals from him. I enjoyed the development of the relationship between the two. We get glimpses into Silas' painful past and how he feels a connection with the hardworking Mercy. Mercy's reprobate brother is a total loser who does his best to sabotage his own family for his own self-interest. A fun read but I also liked that it was a sexy read with the heroine in tune to her burgeoning sexuality.
