Bookdealer Yvonne Wilson is determined to buy the rare book that her client wants. After the Amish bookstore owner Jake Lantz refused $100k for the book, Yvonne flies to Indiana to charm him into selling it to her. Jake has never read the book, but he promised his grandfather that he would never sell the book. With the encouragement of his assistant Eva, Jake agrees to read the book out loud with her. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own. I love how this rare book on faith pulled them together. I quickly became wrapped up with the characters and their story. I look forward to the next book in this series.
I enjoy Beth Wiseman's books. When I saw this one was coming out, AND it had a bookish theme, I immediately requested it!
The Bookseller's Promise has a slow start and is description-driven (which if you have been reading my reviews for a while, you know I am not fond of). The story follows Eva, Yvonne, and Jake, told in third person from their perspectives.
I enjoyed the premise of the book. I loved the setting and admired Jake for wanting to keep his promise. This is a quick read with an unexpected plot twist in the middle. The end of the story seems to be setting the stage for the second book.
I would recommend this to anyone who loves Amish romances. Fans of Kathleen Fuller, Wanda Brunstetter, and Amy Clipston will enjoy this one.
Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I was not required to provide a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Bookseller’s Promise is a very well written Amish story. I enjoyed the plot and the character dynamics. If you enjoy Amish fiction you will enjoy this book. I received an advance ebook from Netgalley. This is my unbiased review.
Honestly a fun easy read that was a really lovely break from the world. Amish romances are a pretty great escape, and this one hit all the marks - always fun when they do amish and english worlds!
"The Bookseller's Promise" leads readers on a journey through hope and heartbreak, as well as lost and found loves. English and Amish worlds collide in this novel about a mysterious book and those who seek to own it. The subplots of romance between both Amish and English couples add interest to this novel by a well-known and loved author of Amish fiction.
When book broker Yvonne cannot convince Amish bookseller Jake to sell her a rare book, no matter how much money she offers, Yvonne determines to visit him in person to plead her case. While she is gone on her book buying trip, her fiance Trevor embarks on a business trip. Both look forward to their upcoming wedding. Yvonne's arrival at Jake's bookstore results in some tense and also hilarious moments, as Jake and Yvonne try to come to some agreement about the rare book Yvonne seeks to purchase.
Eva works in the bookstore with Jake, but desires to become more than his employee. When Jake refuses to see her as the lovely young woman who wants to win his heart, Eva determines to move on to date another Amish man.
Yvonne and Eva become fast friends and share secrets and romantic plans for their futures. When tragedy strikes, Yvonne must confront her own beliefs, with some help from Jake's mysterious book.
This book is set in Montgomery, Indiana. The establishments mentioned exist, adding authenticity to the events in this novel. As an Indiana resident, I was excited to read about places familiar to me. I appreciate the author's attention to detail. I hope this is just the first in a new series, as the stage has been set for the further adventures of characters who appeared in this book.
Themes include struggles with faith, loss of loved ones, joys and trials of relationships, and the differences between the Amish and non-Amish cultures. The characters are well-developed and realistic. The Christian message in this sweet and clean novel is overt. Readers who enjoy books about Amish people and culture will also enjoy the twists and turns of this story.
I received this novel from the publisher and from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The opinions expressed here are entirely my own.
An unrequited romance and a rare book . . .
That phrase is a perfectly fitting description of The Bookseller's Promise. But if you think that description sums up the whole story, I'm here to tell you that it's not even close.
Yvonne Wilson is on a mission to acquire an extremely rare book, and she finds out that an Amish bookstore actually has the book. However, when Yvonne contacts Jake Lantz, the bookstore owner, she is shocked when he informs her that the book is not for sale. Because Yvonne is not one to give up, especially where a large payout is involved, she decides to travel to Indiana so that she can speak directly to Jake and get him to change his mind.
Jake owns the bookstore that had been his grandfather's, and Eva Graber has worked with him ever since she was fifteen years old. While Eva would like Jake to see her as more than just his employee, he seems a tad bit slow in the romance department and doesn't quite get the message. And that is where a story about an unrequited romance and a rare book begins. It's also the beginning of how Yvonne, Jake and Eva's paths cross and merge together, which create a beautiful story.
While I loved Jake and Eva right from the start, I struggled with feeling the same way about Yvonne. However, as I got to know the three of them better, I completely changed my mind about Yvonne. Then when a curve ball was thrown into the story, the three characters took over my heart completely.
The Bookseller's Promise is a true gem of a story. Once I started reading it, I couldn't stop. I wanted Jake and Eva to find each other, but I really wanted to know what was in that special book. Author Beth Wiseman flawlessly blended the themes of romance, intrigue, and faith throughout the story, and she did so in a way where the themes perfectly complement each other and do not overshadowed one another. It was a perfect combination as is, but it became even more perfect with some unexpected events that added so much more depth to the story and made me say, "Wow! I did not see that coming!" I highly recommend you read it for yourself and when you do, you'll understand why.

Book one in the Amish Bookstore series, author Beth Wiseman’s title caught my attention. What reader isn’t interested in bookstores and booksellers?
An Amish romance, for me the story started really slow. This isn’t typical for a Wiseman book so I was a bit concerned. It did pick up about mid-point and I really liked the ending. So hang in there and know it gets better.
The story has three main characters who are fairly well developed. At times I wanted to shake them and tell them to talk to each other; stop assuming things. And since that’s typical for real life it made the characters seem real. The plot was interesting; not at all what I expected. Romance with a mystery and all tied together neatly by the end made for a satisfying read.
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a review.
As always, Beth wiseman has given us a book full of heart and soul! I love that her books draw me closer to what God has in store for me in this life. And The Bookseller’s Promise is no exception! Following Jake, Eva, and Yvonne, the story will take you on a journey towards not just romantic love, but the best kind of love: our Savior’s love. Jake has an old book and Yvonne is a book collector. When she offers him a huge amount of money for a book he has, she can’t imagine why he turns it down. She makes a trip from Texas to Indiana to try and convince him to sell. Once there, she discovers that there is more to the book than the money it’s worth. Eva is jakes assistant and the two of them will also find hope and a future. Can’t wait for the next one!!! Really loved meeting the characters! And love the emotional intensity in the book! Thanks to #bethwiseman and #netgalley for sharing your stories!
Beth Wiseman is a consistently good writer, and this book certainly lived up to my expectations for the most part.
I loved the bookselling and rare-book-search components, being an avid reader who's done my fair share of book hunting! (Maybe not to a professional level, but still. :D)
Sometimes I wished that the characters would just sit down and have a conversation, for goodness' sake, lol--so much could be resolved with a convo (it seems like, says the girl who would totally be in the same situation IRL). And yet, we wouldn't have half the plots or books out there if that were the case, eh? They do truly mirror much of reality. :)
There were a couple climactic scenes I was unfortunately disappointed in--the writing suddenly felt much younger and shallow to me than the rest of the book. I also was a little disappointed that one wish/hope actually got granted--because it doesn't always happen that way. Maybe I'm just a bit cynical about the topic, and will entirely own that that sentiment is on me--not the author, character, instance, or book!
Will I continue with the series? Not sure. Maybe; jury is still out, and we'll see how I feel when new books come along.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved this book. I loved the connections between the various characters in the book and some unexpected scenes that happened. Yes, this was a very engaging book and it is hard to put this one down. Have to keep reading to see what's next, because you can't be too certain!
I enjoyed the Christian themes throughout and the character growth. The characters were well-developed and the non-Amish character, Yvonne was an important part of the story. Their exchanges were very believable and the storyline was new and fresh. I would have to say, this book is a winner. Can't wait for the next in the series!
I received an e-book copy from NetGalley. All thoughts are my own.
Many elements to this timeless Amish read that hit close to the heart. One is a book, one is death and life, and the other is love. All of these are interwoven between an Amish bookseller, his assistant, and an Englisher who buys expensive books for collectors.
Yvonne Wilson is a vibrant young woman. She is engaged and she is about to embark on the greatest deal of her life. A book that her buyer is willing to buy for over $100,000.00 The book belongs to Jake Lantz who has been selling books for a long time. The book is one that his grandfather had given to him with a promise. Never to sell it. It is a promise that Jake is bound by. His assistant Eva who happens to be in love with Jake, finds this book as a way to connect to Jake in a more personal way.
The sparks fly with Yvonne and Jake - they are both committed to their own promise. Yvonne with her client and Jake to his grandfather. Yvonne even though she is engaged, finds herself attracted to Jake in a way that leads her to find out more about the book and the promise that he made.
However, when tragedy strikes, all 3 of them develop a strong bond of faith that is centered on the very book that holds the promise.
I enjoyed this book in many ways. However, for me it touched on theology that is very heavy. I appreciated the author's encouragement for readers to seek God in this area. To walk with Him in our questions, suffering and everyday life. I can't wait for the others in the series.
A special thank you to Zondervan Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC and the opportunity to post an honest review.
Wonderful start to a new series! This book was an absolute joy to read. It's a sweet romance with mystery and just enough drama to make it a great read. I look forward to the next book in this series.

"The Bookseller's Promise" by Beth Wiseman
Release Date: 4.19,.2022
Yvonne Wilson travels to Indiana from Texas to convince Amishman Jake Lantz to sell her client a rare book from his collection, promising a large amount of money for the book. Jake vowed to his grandfather to never sell the book, and he intends on keeping that promise. Jake doesn't understand why it's so important, as he's never read the book.
Eva Graber has loved Jake for years, ever since he hired her to work in the bookstore. He doesn't seem to notice her. When Yvonne shows up and seems to distract Jake, Yvonne suggests that she and Jake read the book together. They will discover a lot more than Jake's grandfather's love of this book.
This book is the first in the series. There were many twists and turns, and I loved that Lizzie and Esther were featured from a previous series! There was more influence from the English world than other Amish novels, as Yvonne plays a large part in this book.
Thank you to @netgalley and @zondervan for the copy of this novel in exchange for my honest opinion.

Thank you NetGalley and Zondervan Fiction, for the advance copy of the book!
I admit it was a little slow to get into, but one I read on a little more I started to really enjoy it. It DOES get a little heavy handed, moreso perhaps than usual, into the faith aspect but that's par for the course with these sorts of books!
I am a great lover of the "Why will he just not notice me already" so I really liked the love story between Eva and Jake, I also felt so awful for poor Yvonne, and glad she was able to find peace in the end!
I enjoyed this book and will recommend it to the patrons at our library. Nice simple story with good characters.
This was a very interesting book. Lots of different things with both the book and interaction and friendship between Amish and English. I really enjoyed this book. The ending was a surprise.
"The Bookseller's Promise" by Beth Wiseman, is a clean novel written with spiritual principles. It is refreshing to read a book without violence or sexual content. The story starts a bit slow, but has a huge shocking plot twist that changes the entire storyline and leaves readers wanting to quickly know more. It is a beautiful novel that focuses on God's unwavering love.
Jake Lantz, owns an extremely valuable book that he inherited from his grandfather. Yvonne Wilson is determined to buy the book from Jake, but he refuses her generous monetary offers. The rare book has sentimental meaning to Jake. It represents a deep connection to his grandfather and his ancestors. Yvonne makes a trip all the way from Texas to Indiana to personally change Jake's mind. Will Jake sell the book? How will the situation be used to glorify God?
"The Bookseller's Promise" will be published April 19th.
Thank you NetGalley and Zondervan Fiction, for the honor of reviewing this touching story.
I love Amish fiction and this was one of the exceptional ones that I have read in a long time. The bookstore theme is right up my alley and I enjoyed the mystery of the rare book. Yvonne (an Englisher) has been hired to purchase a rare book from bookstore owner (Amish) Jake, However, Jake is a man of integrity and won’t sell the book as he made a promise to his grandfather to never sell it. Lots of emotions come up when Yvonne approches Jake and even some jealousy with Jakes employee Eva - as there are some hidden feelings of love. Lots of different twists and turns. Some heartache and confusion and even fear. I had a hard time putting this one down as I was attached to the storyline and the characters. Definitely will be recommending to friends. Looking forward to the next book in this series. .

A really good Amish romance! "The Bookseller's Promise" is a book lovers dream! Throw in the Amish and you've got a hit!
Yvonne shows up determined to buy a rare book from Jake. Jake is an Amish man, who runs a used bookstore with the help of Eva, an Amish woman. The first in a new series, so a bit of building up in the beginning, but otherwise really enjoyed this one. A bit different than other Amish romances, since a bit more influence with the English world with Yvonne, but still found it hard to put down. Would highly recommend this one and look forward to the next in the series.
