A fun sweet read! Highly recommend.
Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for my ARC.
A practical and interesting book by a psychologist on strategies for coping with everyday life challenges and trauma. Could be useful in addition to therapy
What a thoughtful, interesting, and timely book. Self-help and pop psychology books are hit or miss, but this one really does a great job of exploring tips and tools for better mental health.
A great self help book that helps to learn to manage many different types of issues you may face throughout life. The tools teach people to become resilient in facing life challenges.
This was an excellent book and one of the best self-help books I've read to date. It was very clear, concise and to the point without being too preachy. I felt like I was heard and understood and would highly recommend this excellent book to anyone struggling with mental health.
I am sorry for the inconvenience but I don’t have the time to read this anymore and have lost interest in the concept. I believe that it would benefit your book more if I did not skim your book and write a rushed review. Again, I am sorry for the inconvenience.
This is one of those books that shines a bright light on the things you try to keep buried deep, deep down ha ha. I came across this book via a TikTok, funnily enough, and it piqued my interest from the very first view. When I saw that it had arrived on NetGalley, I was so excited to finally read it! And boy, was it the breath of fresh air that I needed. This book was such a soft, gentle break from everyday life - I loved the techniques that she suggested, and have been trying to implement a few of them (with pretty successful results so far!), and I loved being able to learn how the mind works in order to better take care of mine! Loved this book - this is a book everyone should read!!!
As a mental health advocate, I loved this book. I don’t typically enjoy “self-help” books, but this one was good! It was informative and will help with every day life.
Why has nobody told me this before by Dr. Julie Smith was a nicely packaged, easy read! I felt the chapsters were written in a very digestible format, making it easy to understand. At some point, some of parts felt a bit repetitive. But overall, it was a wonderful read and I took away a few new lessons and questions to consider! This isn’t a book you just passively read. I enjoyed the toolkit portions that brought the book to life!
Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before by Dr. Julie Smith was excellent! I first found her on TikTok I loved what she had to say. This book has been so helpful I really get something out of every chapter. They’re short you can do a few at a time or one and really let it sink it. She makes improving mental health feel possible!
Wonderful tips by Dr. Smith on how to manage and cope with the day to day life of anxiety. Needed this book at the exact time I was granted permission to read. I felt like I was reading about my life in so many places throughout the book. Very relatable and would recommend to anyone suffering from the stress of anxiety.
Written by a psychologist, this book is meant to be a toolkit to help one better understand bad moods, motivation, emotional pain, grief, self-doubt, fear, stress, and purposeful living. Thoroughly researched and with simple-to-use tools to identify causes of emotional issues and resources to help ameliorate them, this text is a great go-to for mindful living. I hope to use some utilize some of these tips in my classroom, as they've worked for myself as I've read through this volume. Great reread value and a vital personal and professional resource.
Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? is a great toolkit for dealing with all the regular things in life than can become overwhelming. The voice is a conversational narrative and the author gives reasonable, actionable things you can do to improve your situation. Perfect for people who "get in their own head."
Why has nobody told me this before by Dr. Julie Smith, is an easy to read guide on how to take control of your mental health and happiness.. Based upon years of experience as a psychologist, Dr. Smith provides advice and coping techniques so that you can improve your mental health. This book is an easy to read book, with skills that can be quickly understood and implemented by all readers. Important topics discussed include the following: understanding moods, understanding and improving motivation, emotions and what do do with them, grief, dealing with your doubt, anxiety and how to eradicate it, stress and dealing with it, and how to have a meaningful life. I really enjoyed the style of writing. You felt as if it was a friend talking to you and encouraging you throughout the reading of this book. The tips were easy to understand. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to improve their mental health and happiness. This is not a "one time' read, but one that I will continue to access. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance review copy in exchange for my honest review.
I really like Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? While many concepts seem like no brainers to help yourself thrive emotionally. There were a number of things that I had no considered before regarding emotions and our emotional brains. I also really liked that there were segments with questions to consider or journal about, it helped me to focus my own reflections. Great read for anyone who is looking to become more in tune with their emotions and analyze why they act in ways that they do!
I'm going to be upfront and say that I never actually finished this book. I absolutely love the ideas and concepts in it. I would prefer to have a hard copy of this book (which I will be getting!). I didn't finish it as it was a lot for me, mentally to be able to grasp while life has been happening.
I do recommend you read this! She has great tips and exercises that will definitely help.
ARC provided by Netgalley for an honest review.
There is a lot of great information shared in this book. It is detailed and informative and provides self reflection topics, journal topics, and other worksheets to aid in your self-help journey. I appreciate that the author wrote in a voice that was generally easy to follow.
At some point though, the variety of information becomes too much. The topics addressed too vast, many that will be inapplicable. Of course not every page of a self-help book should apply to every reader, but I feel this book would better serve the readers it is intended to reach if it was developed into separate books by topic. I felt there was a significant amount of duplicative information throughout the text that had me questioning if I had already read it.
This was such a good read! A little repetitive at times, but there were genuine moments where I was like, “huh, why DID no one tell me this before?” Its like a very generalized therapy to give you some of the tools you need to manage your emotions. Recommend!
I thought this book was a great, easy, self-help style book that seemed to cover every topic possible. Coming from someone with lifelong anxiety, reading each chapter helped me to put things into perspective. The narrative style eased the reading and broke up the techniques. I loved how I could look up particular topics easily and didn’t need to read the sections before to jump in.
WHY HAS NOBODY TOLD ME THIS BEFORE? by Dr. Julie Smith deals with coping techniques for emotional and mental health. Smith, a clinical psychologist with over 3 million followers on her TikTok channel, helps her readers to understand low moods, deal with emotional pain and grief in some of the early sections of this debut. She also offers advice on topics like fear, self-doubt, stress, and having a meaningful life. Each chapter has a bulleted summary (e.g., "to fight fear, you must be able to face it; escape and avoidance only provides short-term relief but feeds anxiety in the long term"). The last chapter, "When to seek help," is especially important, of course. Smith says that "this book is your toolkit to use for improving or enhancing your mental health and wellbeing." About five percent of the book contains useful references and other suggested (primarily UK-based) resources which might be of interest to our psychology students.
