I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Frozen Souls, the fourth novel to feature Detective Ellie Reeves set in the fictional Georgia town of Crooked Creek and its environs on the Appalachian Trail.
In a snowstorm the frozen body of a young woman is discovered, naked and stabbed to death. Searching the missing persons database Ellie tentatively identifies her as Nadine Houser who disappeared eleven years ago, but she doesn’t have time to fully investigate before another young woman goes missing.
I thoroughly enjoyed Frozen Souls, which is a fast paced novel with a few surprises. I wouldn’t call them twists and turns because it is a linear narrative with one discovery leading to the next.
The novel is told alternately by Ellie and her investigation and the unnamed killer, who is clearly disturbed and a psychopath by nature and nurture. For a change I found hearing from the killer quite interesting (usually I groan when I see it in a novel), not because he has anything new to say in terms of his psychopathy, but because I spent the whole novel trying to work out how he got away with his crimes when he’s obviously ill. I came to the conclusion that it suits the author, not realism, and as it makes for engrossing reading I have no argument with it.
The plot moves at a fast pace with murders, developments and the usual interdepartmental infighting. I was taken aback by the profile of some of the victims, but it makes sense in plotting terms and adds a certain frisson of nobody’s safe to the read. There is no time to ponder realism with events occurring in every chapter and taking the reader’s attention.
As ever Ellie Reeves is at the sharp end of the investigation and being undermined at every turn by Sheriff Bryce Waters. This takes a more vindictive turn in this novel, but she’s fit for him. There is also a hint of romance for her. It’s all go on all fronts.
Frozen Souls is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
A great addition to the series.
I have read the previous two books in this series, but it is not necessary. Although some elements from previous books, including who the murderer was, are revealed in this book. But mostly without details.
It's hard to write something new in a serial killer story. Yet Rita Herron always succeeds, her story is fresh and interesting. And it is really holding you on the edge of your seat. The frozen body of a girl who had disappeared many years earlier is found in the forest. The main character, Detective Ellie Reeves, must catch the murderer before another young girl gets hurt. Especially when the governor's daughter disappears. The stakes are high all the time.
I also like how closely this story is tied to the setting, the mountain town of Crooked Creek. Even the weather plays a significant role in this story and builds up the atmosphere. I had noticed it in earlier books in this series, and it was so in this one. If you like stories where location matters, you won't be disappointed by this one.
Ellie is a good and strong main character, but not without some visible flaws. In addition to her perspective, we also have some other POVs. We already know some of these characters from previous books, such as Lola, Cord and Derrick. But there are also some new ones - the murderer and one of his victims. Especially this second one adds a lot of chills to the story.
But it also makes the story a lot darker and more brutal. This is not a book for people who have a problem with vicious violence against women. If this topic or the torture scenes are something you avoid, this is not the story for you.
If you have no problems like that, then I strongly recommend this book, whether you have read any of the previous books in this series or not.
Would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher for letting me read this gripping novel
My first book by this author and it won’t be my last, was hooked from the first chapter and found it high energy right from the start and though I may have joined this series from this book and not knowing the history of the characters I could still follow the storyline. I will just have to catch up with the other books at a later time
There is someone taking women into the woods and not letting them go … how long he’s been doing it is unknown but one of the first bodies found frozen and laid out had been missing 11 years
Another woman has gone missing but unknown to the hunter is that she is a high profile person
Can she be found before it’s to late
I love how the tension and the character plots flowed right from the first chapter and will be keeping an eye out for more of this authors works from now on
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Frozen Souls by Rita Herron that I read and reviewed.
This is the fourth book in the Ellie Reeves series and in this book Ellie finds herself searching for the governor’s daughter who has disappeared and it looks like another killer is loose on her mountain. As the bodies pile up and with the help of Special Agent Derrick Fox and Ranger Cord McClain, both who would do anything for Ellie, maybe she will be able to find the Hunter and find the new mad on the mountain.
This book was pretty good as a whole. I am getting a little tired of Ellie not being able to be due which man she wants between Cord and Derrick in this series. I feel like she is leading them both on. That or she is the dumbest female on this planet and if is getting old fast. As for the mystery part in this book I had no idea who killer was and what he complete motives in this book.
I am giving Frozen Souls four out of five stars.
Release date 28th October 2021 thank you to netgalley, Rita Herron and bookature for the advance digit copy in exchange for my fair and honest opinions.
I just wasn't ready for this book and I'm still not ready it was so good!!!
Ellie Reeves finds herself in the centre of another serial killer in her town!!! When a missing woman from 11 years ago is found frozen with a necklace that says mine forever, she has to find out who she is and what links she has to a senator's daughter Ginger who has gone missing. FBI agent Derek is worried that the killer may have taken her. The question is are they too late?
First of all ELLIE AND DEREK HURRY UP AND GET TOGETHER! I feel like I'm on edge with every book I want them to realise they are perfect for one another. I found this installment to be as good as the rest!! We again follow both points of view and I loved reading the protective side of Derek! Espically because the victims share similar characteristics to Ellie.
As usual we are taken on a fantastic ride to discover who the killer is and I must say I hadn't a clue. Even with all the clues throughout the book I couldn't guessed at all. This killer is more brutal also, this is depicted when a body is cut up. I could really feel the emotions of Ellie. We get to read the killers pov also and as per I loved those chapters I find incorporating killers voices has a way of showing at the very least the killers mindse.
Rita Herron has made sure she continued with loose ends and Ellie and her relationship with her parents after finding out she was adopted. Also her issues with elected sheriff Brice he seems more unstable in this book but we do get to the bottom of it allowing the story to progress
All in all this is a great book Ellie and Derek are a strong team what I will say is you need to read the earlier books to fully understand whose who to understand some of the subtle hints that are thrown in throughout the entire book .
Would I recommend this book? Yes it was so enjoyable and keep me guessing until the very last word the motive behind the kills and wondering how many bodies are hidden! Safe to say this was a ploy to keep me thinking ha! Easy 5 stars
Detective Ellie Reeves is back still raw from her last case and the revelations about her birth mother, reporter Angelica and her friend and murder victim Vanessa. But now Ellie is facing another distressing case that sees her reunited with FBI Agent Derrick Fox and having to use every ounce of expertise and experience to catch a brutal, unrelenting and quite frankly crazy serial killer.
And honestly, I couldn't turn the pages fast enough or put this story down and boy did I enjoy every twist, blow, shock and surprise that Ms Herron perfectly delivered and for me this series has just got better and FROZEN SOULS is the best one yet.
Would definitely recommend.
Wow! from the moment I read the first page of the prologue, I was hooked! Ellie Reeves is a gutsy detective, who puts her all on the line chasing a creepy psychotic serial killer. As in the other books in this series, Ellie shows she can hold her own! The story was intense, with twists which kept me enthralled. I'll look forward to the next Ellie Reeves book as this in one of the best series I have read.
Another great addition to the Ellie Reeves series. I strongly suggest you read this book on a beach somewhere, tropical drink in hand. If you read it when it is cold and snowy, it will scare the crap out of you!
Detective Ellie Reeves is back!
Plot:- A body of a woman who went missing years ago was found in the AT. The body has been kept in a cooler and is identified as Nadine Houser who went missing on the night after her shift at a convenience store few years ago. While Detective Ellie is trying to follow up Nadine's case, soon Ginger Weston, daughter of the governor goes missing and Ellie must work alongside FBI agent Derrick to find Ginger before it becomes too late.
Writing:- I have been hooked into Ellie Reeves series and each time I read Rita Heron's books, I wasn't disappointed! Filled with twists and turns, many unexpected ones that will make the reader hooked into the story. I was at that the edge of my seat as I continued reading this book, wondering who this person who hunted these girls and then kept their bodies in the cooler! I kept reading this book until I came to the ending. All this time, I was left in suspense and there were not much suspects that I couldn't figure out who the hunter is. Good job by the author for keeping the readers guess until the end! Also, this is fast paced, action packed that you feel like you are investigating this case with Ellie Reeves
Although this is a part of the Ellie Reeves series, this is actually a standalone novel and the author has clearly explained and written tits and bits from her previous books in this book so the person who is reading this book for the first time will not get lost in the series.
Characters:- Ellie Reeves is my all time favorite characters--she is brave and courageous who would do anything to catch the killers and put them behind the bars. I also like the slow romance developing between Ellie and Derrick.
Overall:- Overall, this is a fast paced thriller filled with twists and turns you would never have guessed until the end--worth five stars!
Thank you Netgalley and Bookouture for the ARC. The review is based on my honest opinion only.
My thanks to Rita Herron, Bookoutre and Netgalley for this ARC.
I've never read this series before, and except for a few references of other books, I think it stands alone.
I loved Ellie! She's smart and tough! Derrick? Please..Those 2 really need to hook up! I hate romance, but even I felt the tension!😉
The Hunter is one sick individual. I've no pity for him. He should be gunned down and still left alive. Then put in a concrete box. He should hate that!
I did feel that the author played the stereotypical card of we're all just idiot's here!
Thing is that sometimes people do think smart, but things go sideways. Here? They don't call for back up. Next thing you know? Everyone's hanging from a hook.
Ugh!
I did like this book. I would definitely read the series. But, I hate when people get stupid in the end. That's all on the author.
Ellie is back and searching for one of the most twisted killers she has come up against. There is a ton of suspense and tension. There are also some very interesting side plots unfolding. One of which is Ellie's personal life. This series just keeps getting better. I can't wait for more.
In book four of the Detective Ellie Reeves series, death is till stalking the Appalachian Trail. When a woman's body is found on the trail with a heart necklace, Ellie knows another killer is preying on young women on her beat. Dealing with her own personal traumas, Ellie jumps headfirst into finding a killer with her FBI friend Derrick and ranger Cord. The clock is ticking when one of their friends is taken. Full of suspense and intense action, the story is fast paced and a wild rollercoaster of a thriller. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
Get yourself comfortable and give yourself some time as you are not going to want to miss a single page!
A frozen body is found, but it is not a recent death, a girl goes missing, time is ticking for Ellie and her team to find the killer before they strike again.
This was the first book I read in this series, but it was not a problem.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for an early read in exchange for my opinion.
Another fast-paced instalment of the Detective Ellie Reeves series - I’m already looking forward to reading the next one!
I really wanted to love this and the beginning of the book was very promising, intriguing too. Alas, I didn't enjoy the multiple points of view, the barrel of details, and victims one after the next.
I believe this would have benefited from a little more mystery about what was happening to the victims, tell don't show.
A killer is looking for his forever woman but he hasn’t had much luck with finding the right one. He won’t stop until he finds her. Detective Ellie Reeves knows that things aren’t going to get any easier with the sheriff he really has it in for her but she can’t figure out why. A body has been found in the woods covered by the snow and now the race is on to find out who she was. The police have their work cut out for them especially when the next missing girl is the daughter of the governor. Things go badly quickly and they know that they don’t have much time to find her. Will Ellie & the team find her before it is too late? The killer isn’t about to give up on his quest he needs to find the perfect woman he will just need to continue looking until he does. But will the police be able to stop him before more victims are found? A good solid read. I was lucky enough to receive a copy from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review
I stopped reading this because the extreme descriptions of the killer’s violence was too much. Be aware if you prefer less graphic reads
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for this arc
This was not my favorite of the series. I’m looking forward to see what’s next.
I felt as if the book was disjointed. Didn’t flow for me.
Intense, fast paced with a creepy psychotic killer. You can read the book in this series as a stand a lone but I recommend reading them in order, there are little snippets we are given along the way that the next book embellishes and plays on. We get the point of views from the main characters and are invested in all, Ellie, the killer, FBI Dereck, and Cord, part of Ellies past and search and rescue. As Ellie is out there searching for the killer we are also kept up with things going on in her life, with her real mom, her step sister, and Mandy, her niece There are twist, turns, new things come to light and a jaw dropping, say what moment towards the end. The survivalists, living off the grid, learning to hunt from a young age living in the mountains showing the fortitude, I have to say, as dark and twisted as the killer was, I look at what he was taught, how he was raised and though I feel for the boy, it scares the beejusus out of me. This was a one read sitting with stops. Say what? Yes I read it from start to finish, but every so often I had to put the book down to breath, Thank you Bookouture , Rita Herron and Netgalley for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts an opinions
This has been and still is by far one of the best series I have read . Ellie is such a great character that you want to keep following. Another serial killer is on the hunt and Ellie is set out to find him. Twists and turns throughout the book and great writing kept me reading into the night. Great series!
