A new author for me, her first book and OMG WHAT A READ!!!!!
One of the best serial killer books I have ever read. A plethora of victims, a dark, sick and twisted killer and so much more. This book has everything, visceral, chilling and at times bloody terrifying. I did not want this book to end. A tour de force of this genre. I loved everything about this book from the characters to the story. This book deserves more than five stars and is a MUST READ for all readers of this genre. After reading the first book by this author she now sits on the top of my MUST READ reading pile. Loved loved it and can't wait to read more from this very talented author.
Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC in return for giving an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review this book. A gripping, twisty well written book I was hooked fr9m the beginning. A good read!
This was SUCH an original plot, and I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Immediately, I thought of season 6 of Dexter with the Doomsday Killer, a disturbed young man who created Biblical-themed tableaux that shocked and horrified Miami.
Detectives Cara Elliott and Noah Deakin are investigating a string of brutal murders that seem unconnected, but soon it's clear they are dealing with a serial killer who is committing murders based on infamous serial killers such as Dahmer, Kemper, and Manson.
I really enjoyed the characters in this book and how fleshed out their personalities and relationships were. The opening chapters begin with Jessica Ambrose, who has been implicated in the house fire that killed her husband and injured her daughter. She's on the run, but with the help of suspended detective Nate Griffin, who is still recovering from a horrifying loss, she sees a disturbing link between her tragedy and Nate's.
This was the type of book that you constantly tell yourself, "One more chapter," but then catch the opening sentence of the next chapter and read on. I definitely need more from Detective Elliott, and I hope the author will feature her in a future book.
This is one of the best serial killer thrillers I’ve read in a really long time!
I really hope there will be a follow up book as I would love to see more from this cast of characters.
Dark, gritty and as disturbing as it is engrossing!
Brilliant

Sam Holland really delivered on the thrills that I love to read in a serial killer book, and I’m excited to see what she comes up with next!
I will mention that this is very graphic. Now you might be going, Yea, it’s a serial killer novel, duh. But I’ve read a lot of serial killer fiction and many are pretty tame compared to this one. I don’t think it’s a bad thing and I thought it was all relevant to the story, but I did want to put that out there.
Besides lots of nods to the infamous killers, the reader gets to read about interesting characters and there are lots of character side stories that get tied up at the end. I thought the more in depth character looks added a wonderful layer to the book. It was one of the things that made me want to keep reading, besides finding out who the killer was.
As far as the killer went, I knew pretty early on, but it took nothing away from the story. And there was still a big twist that I didn’t see coming. While I enjoyed the twist there were a couple of things that didn’t quite sit perfectly with me… but it is fiction, so Holland can do whatever she wants. I don’t want to spoil anything, but I don’t know if I really believe a serial killer would be willing to not let others know just how depraved they are… but, perhaps, we’ll see more of them in a future book.
Taking the serial killer sub-genre as far as possible, "The Echo Man" plunges detectives Cara Elliott and Noah Deakin into a series of horrifying murders, soon revealed to be copycat killings mimicking the darkest of the dark, Kemper, Dahmer, Manson, on and on. At the same time, Jessica Ambrose is accused of murdering her husband but rescued by disgraced detective Nate Griffin, and both find themselves eerily linked to the baffling Echo Man spree. Debut author Sam Holland is a solid writer with a firm grip on a rollicking plot. The murders themselves are described with chilling realism, almost, it seemed to me, to the point of becoming serial-killer-porn. The Echo Man is a read best undertaken with a slight suspension of disbelief and a vacant evening, ending up as a horrific, hypnotic rush.
The Echo Man by Sam Holland is a superb read with an engrossing plot and vibrant characters. Well worth the read!
This book is a dark and disturbing read. Lots of blood and gore as a serial killer is on the loose creating copy cat murders of notorious serial killers.
Jessica Ambrose is on the run after being accused of killing her husband and injuring her daughter. Her path soon crosses with Nate, a suspended detective who is trying to solve the case.
I liked Nate he was obsessed and troubled with a past somehow connected to the case. I do have to question some of Jessica’s decisions and I didn’t find her a very likeable character.
This was an excellent debut. Thank you to Netgalley, Sam Holland and crooked lane books for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a murder mystery…a copycat…a woman on the run…solving this one won’t be easy…especially when no one seems to know anything…this book was sent to me by Netgalley for review…although the story moves slowly at time, the conclusion is one that is surprising.
This book was my first five star of the year, I just loved it. The Echo Man was everything I want in a serial killer thriller. This book was dark and morbid and perfectly graphic. Ok maybe a bit too graphic for some but I loved it! I also absolutely loved the characters and I just felt really connected to this book. Everything worked for me on just about every level. Huge book hangover once I finished and I just sat there like a zombie trying to come to terms with everything. For a pretty sick book, this one really got me on an emotional level. Please tell me this will be a series? Can this be a series? Add this to your TBR ASAP, especially if you love your thrillers dark and twisty/twisted.
This is well written as far as characters and plot. This isn’t really for me, but it was interesting. I feel this is more for those who really are serial killer crime aficionados.
Thank you to Sam Holland, the publisher, and Netgalley for the chance to read and review this arc in exchange for my honest opinion.
Ugh, tedious. There was nothing original about this book. The murder scenes were all reenactments of infamous crime scenes eg. Manson, Kemper, so there wasn't anything new there. The lead detective duo had promise but they weren't featured enough. The side drama involving a woman who can't feel pain and a damaged ex cop haunted by his dead wife border lined on cliche and drove me nuts. They were tied for most unlikable character. Overall, I thought the writing and story line were long winded.
Firstly a big thank you to the publishers for my copy to review on netgalley but also I was sent a copy over Christmas.
I loved this and can tell you now its going to be a huge 2022 debut.
This is everything you could want from a psychological thriller .
Fast paced ,gory and chilling
Addictive with characters you get quickly attached to.
Twisty and tense .
Completely unpredictable and disturbingly dark! . This had me utterly hooked straight away and predict big things for this book and I look forward to seeing what he writes next!

If you like serial killer books you’ll like this one. The story did keep me guessing until near the end, especially with a couple of red herrings thrown in.
This is a great pick for those into gory, twisty psychological thrillers that will keep you up at night either because you're too disturbed to get any sleep or because this book will have you flipping pages well into the night (or both). I would recommend this to someone looking to fill a slot in their October calendar of books to get into that Halloween spirit.
I was drawn to this book based on the description. I really like books and TV shows based on true crime or real events. Although the Echo Man is a work of fiction, the serial killer gets his name because he "echoes" crimes previously committed by well known serial killers, such as Manson, Dahmer and the Zodiac Killer, just to name a few.
Each character is flawed, some a little bit and some much more extreme. Jess Ambrose's character is my least favorite and I personally feel like the book would not have suffered much if she had been eliminated. She just doesn't seem to fit properly into the story. The author tries to explain how she fits and gives her a story line, but I just never really "got" her. The whole book spans a little over a week and within that time, she's cheated on her husband with a random in a bathroom, her house burns down with her husband in it, she evades the police and then hooks up with a policeman and stays at his place. She's obviously mentally unstable and I actually feel incredibly sorry for her daughter, Alice.
By the end of the book, I wanted to slap Cara. How can she be a lead DCI and NOT see all the warning signs around her? Also, how does she not know that her brother, Griffin, has a prescription drug problem? She also works ALL THE TIME--really long hours and leaves very little time for her family. I also just don't get how the killer got away with all of those murders (30+ people) without a trace of evidence or how he even had the time to plan and carry all this out without ever being seen. That part just seems really far fetched.
The author plants little Easter eggs within the book that drops hints as to who the killer is and I had figured it out way before the end, but doubted myself a few times. After reading the epilogue, I discovered I was right. The book ends in such as way that there could possibly be a sequel, and I'd be interested to find out if the author plans to pursue this.
Overall, this is a solid read and is a great debut novel for this author. Special thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an ARC of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Interesting but not really my cup of tea. Well written I just personally couldn’t get into the story. Connected murders that seem to all be copy cats of past serial killers. Is it all the same person? And can they catch him in time? I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Great book, by an author I will read more of! Thrilling plot, great writing and brilliant characters. Highly recommend to others.
There are several connected storylines here. Cara is a detective investigating the murder of two young women; Griffith is a suspended detective obsessed with connecting seemingly unrelated crimes to one killer; Jess is the victim of a household arson incident but is considered to be the main suspect. All three stories tie up together with someone copying the past murders done by famous serial killers. I don't know what it says about me that I recognized the Sharon Tate murders before the detectives did. [SPOILERS] I never really like when the killer ends up being a police officer in this kind of book. I suspected both Deakins and Shenton and I did expect Robbie's friend to turn up at some point after there was mention of him in the one doctor's report, but I was surprised at how that played out. Overall, really good, if not too cheerful. I would definitely read more from this author. 4.5 stars rounded to 4.
There is a new serial killer in town. One who is a fan of other serial killers. One who will recreate their killings and create the perfect and most gruesome tableau for the police to find.
DCI Cara Elliott and DS Noah Deakin are sent on a chase throughout town as the killer finds and kills his/her victim. Each killing is violent, gut-wrenching.
Meanwhile, Jess Ambrose is on the run from the police for arson. She teams up with suspended detective Nate Griffin to help find justice.
While the body count rises, it becomes more and more difficult for Jess to find the truth.
There is plenty of murder and graphic descriptions of bodies in this book. For those who find it difficult to read such things, I would advise them to stay away. As for me, I revel in such gruesomeness. In fact, I had been reading too clean (almost pathologically clean) mysteries for quite some time. I guess my blood thirst has been quenched.
Of course, there are some loopholes in the end. But I am willing to forgive all of them just for the joyride that this book is.
I cannot believe this is the debut work of the author. I would love to read her further works if they are fractionally as good as this book.
5 stars!
Thanks to Netgalley, Crooked Lane Books, and Sam Holland for the ARC.
This book wow wow wow all the stars for it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
The pace, the gore, the graphic and most horrific details just made it even better than I was expecting. It was exactly what I needed and had my full attention from the first page. This book is not for the faint hearted, I absolutely love Chris Carters writing and this was right up there with his books 🖤
I would recommend this book to all my murder and serial killer loving friends!
